Product Description
Originally released in 1967, Soul Finger was the Bar-Kays' first album, and it's obvious why they were constantly lauded by legends such as Booker T. Jones and Steve Cropper as key soul music innovators. Soul Finger was the only release by the original lineup before the tragic December 1967 plane crash that killed Otis Redding and four of the band (they reformed in 1968). The album contains 11 instrumental tracks, each of them catchy, danceable and all around attention-grabbing. Soul Finger is marked by Phalon Jones and Ben Cauley's infectious horn riffs and Jimmy King's sparse yet sensitive guitar work. Add Ronnie Caldwell's bluesy organ and Carl Cunningham's rock steady grooves, and you've got a hypnotic recipe for the down-home Memphis soul. Songs such as 'You Can't Sit Down' and 'Bar-Kay's Boogaloo' are ideal party tunes. Energetic and life affirming, this music is simply contagious. Includes original liner notes by Booker T. of the MG's. Warner. 2005.

Stax '07.......2007-05-16
I seem to recall having a 45 of "Soul Finger" on the Volt label when I was about 4 years old. I still think it's a great song. The Bar Kays were similar to Booker T & The MGs, in fact Booker himself wrote the liner notes. This is great Stax/Volt instrumental music from the 60s. I just wish the sound quality was louder.
Good Service.......2005-07-09
The item I ordered was in new condition and arrived faster than expected.
'Gold' Soul Finger.......2003-01-11
If you like Shaft-Isaac Hayes CD you'll love this.
The young, new exponents of the Stax/Volt soul sound '67!.......2000-09-16
The Bar-Kays were part of the next generation of Stax-Volt artists, entering a vibrant soul scene populated by the likes of Booker T. & the MG's, The Mar-Keys, Sam & Dave, William Bell, and Otis Redding. MG drummer Al Jackson, Jr. had taken the young group under his wing, gearing them up for this fantastic 1967 debut. The blistering title track is an unquestionable Memphis soul classic, kicking off a strong set of 11 instrumental cuts. House-wrecking numbers like "Knucklehead," "You Can't Sit Down" and "House Shoes" are sure to get your party started. Sadly, this would be the first and last record from the original Bar-Kays lineup. While on tour with Otis Redding, a tragic airplane crash took the lives of Otis and four members of the group, just six months after the release of this album. The remaining members (trumpeter Ben Cauley and bassist James Alexander) later reformed the group, playing back-up on several Isaac Hayes records and releasing a string of albums that moved their sound towards heavier funk with vocals. The CD reissue includes Booker T.'s original liner notes, testifying the promise of their contagious grooves. This disc is a very enjoyable and often overlooked gem. Definitely recommended for fans of '60s soul.
VERY ESSENTIAL.......2000-04-29
THE BAR-KAYS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN one OF THE BADDEST GROUPS EVER THAT NEVER GETS IT's Fair PROPS.THis DISC is still the Jam.THE TITLE CUT BUMPS TOO HARD.THE HORNS&GROOVES ARE CRISP&TIGHT.THEY DO SO MANY STYLES WELL.A MUST HAVE.

Classic New Orleans Soul.......2007-04-10
This entry in Capitol's "Crescent City Soul" series (other volumes, each containing 20 tracks, are devoted to Dave Bartholemew's productions, "Let The Good Times Roll" which covers r&b hits from 1949 - 66, and "Fats Domino's Jukebox" as well as a Domino boxed set) is a fleet summary of an important and influential label's output covering 1959 (when 'Ooh Poo Pah Doo' was recorded) to spring of 1963, when Minit producer/auteur Allen Toussaint was drafted. The fact that the cover dates are slightly off is just one detail that gives this project a rushed, budget-line feel, especially compared to the same label's 1994 double-cd set "The Minit Record Records Story" - that package, sadly out of print, told the story of Minit's two disparate eras, with a generous 28 tracks representing the Toussaint era on disc one and 25 more covering the revived label (an outlet for Liberty's black music releases)from 1966 to 1970, plus a 20 page booklet. Nor can one avoid comparing the present series to Capitol's marvelous "Capitol Blues Collection", a 1995 - 97 project that issued about two dozen lovingly packaged, designed, and restored titles, many of them 2- or 3-CD sets with lengthy and informative notes, overseen by Pete Welding, covering long lost music by John Lee Hooker, Roy Brown, Jimmy Rogers, T-Bone Walker, and included multi-artist comps such as " the superb Louisiana Swamp Blues" and "Kansas City Blues".
No, if one knows what Capitol's legacy is and what the label is capable of, the present entry seems rather thin indeed, but taken on its own terms it does contain seminal and historically important music, proto-soul music that remains vital for listening or dancing to the present day, bridging the more aggressive r&b of the '50s (Bartholemew, Paul Gayten) with the harder edged funk wrought by The Meters and others beginning around 1967 or '68. Indeed, N.O.'s eccentric mixture of influences (Toussaint's hero was Professor Longhair)and its seemingly inexhaustible pool of brilliant musicians and singers have insured a steady stream of terrific reissues in recent years. "Fortune Teller," Mother In Law", "A Certain Girl" and "Over You" are just a few of the classics that have been covered by artists such as The Rolling Stones and the Yardbirds across the past 45 years.
John Broven's notes are fine, and all tracks have been restored to original mono, so those new to this material or recent converts will be thrilled. But, at only 20 songs, "Finger Poppin'" doesn't even break 50 minutes. For now it appears to be the best bet out there, and reasonably priced. Toussaint's next step (post-Military service) would be a&r man/producer/writer for Sansu Enterprises (through the Bell/Amy/Mala/Sansu family of labels), writing and producing classics for the great Lee Dorsey (check out his two greatly expanded classics on Sundazed, "Ride Your Pony" and "The New Lee Dorsey" as well as the 1970 masterpiece "Yes We Can Can"); for a great selection of 50 tracks by Betty Harris, Calvin Lee, Art Neville and other N.O. legends, (many backed by The Meters as of '67), check out the terrific "Get Low Down! The Soul Of New Orleans 1965 - 67" on Sundazed, which nicely captures this period of Toussaint's (and his hometown's) development, and is recommended.
A BEAUTIFUL LOOK LISTEN TO HOW NEW ORLEANS DOES IT.......2007-03-08
i have quite a few collections of new orleans fonk and soul. this one is, as the others, ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL!!!! i just love listening to joints from this particular period of music because you just do not hear this stuff on the oldies stations anymore, and it's a doggone shame. i love everything on here. no complaints at all.
Superlatives fail me..........2006-01-24
...when it comes to lavishing praise on this compilation commensurate with its excellence...Just suffice it to say that this is both R&B and pop done to the highest standard possible. Incredibly great songwriting, singing and production from the sui generis Allen Toussaint. You can truly see why he's known as a musician's musician and is one of the towering figures of N.O. music...I saw him at the Jazz Fest a coupla years ago, and even from what seemed like miles away, with the huge crowd, he was just tremendous, blowing away every other act I saw that day...
Now, after you pick up this stellar comp of Toussaint productions, be sure to go out and get the Allen Toussaint Collection, a comp of his own solo work. You'll be very happy.
good early New Orleans soul.......2005-04-20
while a lot of these songs may not be well known, they are great soul selections from the early days. A good contrast is the later Minit records collection from the late 60's early 70's, which is distinctly more "funky".
Satisfaction.......2003-04-08
I bought this album on a whim. I only recognized a couple of the songs but within less than a week I knew all the words to all the songs. All the songs are catchy in the way that pop songs were meant to be. This type of music, this cajun-influenced R&B is catchy without being annoying like Doo Wop can be after listen number 30. I liken this album to early Otis songs like 'Shake' and 'Respect' or early Ray Charles songs like 'You Be My Baby'. This album is just plain fun. Neither too fast or slow and always a little off-beat (like 'Mother-in-Law' which likens the woman to satan and '39-21-46', come on, who really has these proportions?!). These were songs that were too black for white charts making them that much cooler now.

Still the ever-funkin' P-daddy.......2006-05-01
Yes, perhaps for Funk purists (and there's nothing wrong with Funk purists), this recording may be below their expectations. But it's hot, raging hot-- "Paint the White House Black" is still a thrilling joint (pun intended) composition with cameos by Public Enemy, Dr. Dre, and many hot luminaries of rap. It's a seering commentary on how ideologically "White" the White House was even in the Clinton era. "Hollywood" is great, "Martial Law" is better--your George Clinton collection is incomplete without this recording.
Yeah, there may be a weak tune in the mix, but let's depart from the reissue after reissue of P Funk's greatest hits--there's lots of greatness here!
George Clinton Sucks At Rapping.......2006-04-17
George Clinton is a terrible rapper, but the music on this album is alright. Let's get satisfied is easily the best song on the album because it's more funk than rap, in other words george clinton is a fonker not a rapper, therefore this album is definitley not a necessity
Falls Just One Point Short Of Greatness!.......2004-09-12
George Clinton was (honestly) quite a few years past his
artistic peak when he released this album in 1993.Hip-hop artists had done a good buisness sampling his music so he figured that he could cash in by offering up more loops. So most
of the music here is hip-hop based funk with rap-oriented beats
and inserts.But rest assured-it's hard edged hip-hop and it's
very funky despite itself. He even tries his hand at H-NRG techno
on "The Big Pump"-it didn't really suit Clinton but it was a valiant try.Arguably the only true P-Funk classics offered up here are "Martial Law" and "The Flag Was Still There",both of whitch would've been great on any vintage Funkadelic recording.
"Paint The White House Black" is a platform for various cameo's
by modern day rappers like Dr.Dre.The albums flaw-it has too many songs and therefore a little filler. But nothing here is
terrible and I rate it one of Clinton's better recent albums!
Funk.......2004-02-12
This release is great. It's too bad many people slept on this album, but it is better than his latest "Dope Dogs" CD.

..........2000-08-10
This album is a snapshot of a genius in a moment of genius and is an all-time favorite of Jazz musicians as well as lay-fans. Even a rock and roller will have her mind blown by the easy driving grooves on this album...
WHY?.......2000-04-20
Of all the Horace recordings to be out of stock! This is the classic Horace quintet (Blue Mitchell, Junior Cook, Gene Taylor and the Great Louis Hayes) at it's best. Juicy Lucy,Cookin at the Continental and Mello-D are some of Horace's best writing. I only hope this one's next in line for the Rudy reissue.
About the very best of Horace Silver.......1999-11-18
This title really needs to be re-stocked. It's a major league cooker. With all the things being re-released these days (and it's great thing), Finger Poppin' is a GOTTA HAVE.
This Has to Be Restocked.......1999-08-22
A classic album that reveals the best of Horace Silver's compositional and Hard-Bop style. This should be made available again as Horace has continued to produce solid work throughout the 90's and his influence on music remains strong.

I bought the CD because of the Must Be Santa song -- which is great!! There were only a few other songs that I liked. Most of the other songs just got on my nerves.
Christmas Music in a Variety of Styles.......2000-10-10
If you like your Christmas music traditional, if you never tire of hearing Bing Crosby crooning "White Christmas" or Nat "King" Cole's rendition of "The Christmas Song" for the zillionth time, then this is an album you definitely want to stay away from. Don't get me wrong, I love the old faithful songs (and I watch "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" at least once every year), but if you're in the mood for some non-traditional music for a change, the fine folks at Rounder have the perfect album for you.
Some of the top names in folk and bluegrass music offer gorgeous instrumentals: David Grisman, John Fahey, and Bill Keith. You get the soulful blues of Charles Brown's "Blue Holiday." George Thorogood charges through the rollicking "Rock & Roll Christmas." Riders in the Sky do it the cowboy way on "Christmas at the Triple X Ranch." But my all-time favorite is Brave Combo's "Must Be Santa Polka." The only real mistep is Joseph Spence's Tom Waits-meets-Otis the drunk's vocal on "Santa Claus Is Coming to TOwn."
If you like the idea of Christmas music coming from rock, blues, polka, bluegrass and cowboy music, this album is a pure delight. HIGHLT RECOMMENDED
It must be Santa has a wonderful mix.......1999-12-04
This cd is one of my favorites! Its hard to put it away after the holidays. Brave Combo is such a fun group and gets us all in the spirit to have fun - so many other artists add a mixture of bluegrass, old-timey, modern and traditional favorites. I love Mary McCaslin and all the others who contribute to this wonderful collection of music.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Compilation.......1999-11-27
I found a radio station on the web called The Breeze (Beach, Boogie and Blues) which is WWBZ broadcasting out of Charleston, S.C. What I discovered is a whole genre' of music devoted to Southern Atlantic beach music. It seems to revolve around a dance from the 60's called The Shag. This is not to be confused with the term 'shag' as used in the Austin Power's movie, but a style of dance.
The Shag is a very developed dance form from the 60's that kids danced basically on the beach. People have kept the style in going all these years. Finger Poppin' Time is one compilation of this type of music. It is based in R&B and blues, but adds a definite swing type style. I enjoyed this CD and recommend it for those investigating The Shag and beach, boogie and blue music.
