Twenty Four Seven

No doubt emboldened by the unlikely late-career success of sister chanteuse/force-of-nature Cher, R&B legend Turner signed on with producers Brian Rawling and Mark Taylor (the team behind the former's worldwide smash "Believe"). Their contemporary production-touches seldom get in the way of Turner's soulful smolder and burn, especially on tracks like the gospel-steeped opener, "Whatever You Need," which stakes the team's intentions to bring the singer into the 21st century with her dignity intact. Wed to a strong melodic pop sensibility ("Absolutely Nothing's Changed," "Talk to My Heart," the smooth Philly soul of "Don't Leave Me This Way"), Turner's dramatic readings are often irresistible. Even on more commercial and dance-oriented tracks (the single "When the Heartache Is Over"; the Bryan Adams duet "Without You"), it's Turner who triumphs. But then, this is a woman who could breath sexual fire into a toothpaste jingle. --Jerry McCulley

I have been rarely listening to this album since i bought it. The songs makes you bore especially after the sixth track. The live performances are amazing and they are one of the two reasons to buy the album. The other reason is the existence of the beautiful hit single "When The Heartache Is Over".I wish the album would include more hits like this song.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Tina Turner CD........2001-01-05

When I bought the "Limited Edition of Twenty Four Seven", I already had the "Twenty Four Seven" CD (single disc) & I'm glad I purchased the "Limited Edition." The live tracks are simply fantasic, especially "River Deep, Mountain High" & "When the Heartache is Over." The non-live tracks of the "Limited Edition" (Disc 1) are all excellent but the track that stands out the most is "When the Heartache is Over," followed by "Whatever You Need," & "Twenty Four Seven." The "Limited Edition" boxed set even includes 2 videos, "When the Heartache is Over" & "Whenever You Need" that could be viewed by using a computer. For me, it's the best Tina Turner album -- even better than Tina's "Simply the Best" album (which is also outstanding by the way). So if you're thinking of buying this "Limited Edition", go ahead. You won't be disappointed. It's money well spent.

5 out of 5 stars Tina Turner Live is Amazing !.......2000-08-03

Tina Turner, the name brings to mind one of the greatest live performers in the history of music. As miss Turner ages she seems to only get better. The sultry growl in her voice, and the shear power of her voice alone sends chills up and down my spine. With this release comes Tina live from Europe during her tv special Happy Birthday Tina. With none of the huge, flashy, eye popping effects of her stage shows, you simply get Miss Turner doing what she realy does best SING. Featuring live tracks from her latest release 24/7 it once again shows that Tina is amazing live. The songs seem to take on all new life with out all the studio perfections. You just get the stripped down rock, funk, dance and soul that only Tina can deliver. This is a must have for any Tina fan. With the two video's included and the studio release of 24/7 this will make a nice addition to your music collection.

4 out of 5 stars Tina delivers a contemporary, yet accesible album.......2005-09-07

I've just started to collect Tina Turner's records, finally approaching my interest in her music. This was a record which I actually was excited to hear, for some reason I was really drawn to it. It has a very clean & simple look on the cover, & that really drew me in. I also remember the video for "When The Heartache Is Over" from several years back.

Well, I've given this record several spins & I can honestly say that I really enjoy it. I see where some fans could be put off by it's "pop" exterior. Like many of the "VH1" Diva ilk, Tina tries to keep her hold on her established fanbase & yet reach new audiences. Here, the arrangements are very much about style. I get the image that they were trying to update Tina for a new "century" & this mostly works. All the elements that have been found in Tina's music such as rock, dance-lite, soul, & her rockabilly vibe all mix here. At times a bit too smoothly which is evidenced on the lead single "When the Heartache Is Over"; though this doesn't limit the enjoyable factor of this cut.

"Go Ahead" is probably one of the best tracks here. It has Tina's soulful voice leading the charge & the music maintains a very "chill nightlife" vibe. Other favorites include the raucous closer "Twenty Four Seven" which Tina seems to tackle with her tongue planted directly in her cheek. "Whatever You Need" is so poignant in it's delivery I can't help but spin this track over agan.

Tina also has her own personal level of schmaltz, so for me some of the more obnoxiously modern arrangements don't grate. Like Donna Summer (another favorite), Tina was blessed with a great voice. Material that may sound average, when given to Donna & Tina is elevated to astounding because their voices drives the song. In some instances that is the case here.

Overall, this is one of the favorites of mine (along with "Foreign Affair") that Tina has put out. It'll be interesting to see if she puts out another album or if this will be her last to date, if so...it isn't that bad of a note to go out on. Even if it is a bit too sweet a times.

5 out of 5 stars The Usual...Just Great!.......2005-07-20

I'm not really under 13. I just didn't want to sign in. Anyway, this is a great album. Tina's most recent album of original material since 1996's Wildest Dreams, another gem. This is a wonderful album. She seems to be going the Cher route here. "Whatever You Need," "When the Heartache is Over," "Don't Leave Me This Way," and the title track are among my favorites on this album. Also recommend Tina Live in Europe and Simply the Best (2 other Tina albums). Enjoy!! :)

4 out of 5 stars Another good album from Tina! .......2004-10-25

While I don't think that this is one of her best albums, Tina Turner opened up 2000 with Twenty Four Seven and it's quite good. A lot of the songs have more of that techno dance, electronica sound to it, and Tina actually pulls it off on the high energy songs. At that time I was very into the Mark Taylor/Brian Rawling produced dance numbers and rumbling sound that they had hits for Cher and others between 1998 and 2001. But they really matched well with the legendary Tina on the songs on this album. When The Heartache is Over, Absolutely Nothing's Changed, and others sound good. The title song is rocking. The other songs by the other writers/producers are also very good. This album proved that Tina could make a solid, upbeat album at 60 and why she's still one of the best in the music business!

4 out of 5 stars Tina and Ike - they WILL get back together!!.......2004-10-06

As an owner of "Simply the Best", which is an awesome compilation of Tina's greatest hits, it's amazing to me that she can re-invent herself like this. This CD pulls you in from track 1 and doesn't let you down. Granted, I'm biased and love Tina Turner, but what's neat is that my Mom is also a big fan of hers. She spans the generations and it proves that her talent has no limits. She's still looking good and sounding good. Well worth it and a great CD for your collection.

4 out of 5 stars The Queen of Rock still has it........2004-06-02

Released in Febuary of 2000, Twenty Four Seven quickly became Tina's highest debut chart entry, entering & peaking at #21. Thats much better than her last album Wildest Dreams, which only peaked at #61. 24/7 quickly became gold in the U.S. & went platnum twice in Europe.

On this latest project Tina seems to be going the Cher route, entering into more dance/pop material. The opening track, Whatever You Want is an uplifting tune, that was only released as a single in Europe. The highlight of the album is When the Heartache is Over. The lyrics are some what autobiographical. The only single released in America from the album, Heartache peaked at a disapointing #51. The song could have been a world wide smash had it had some kind of publicity.

Absolutly nothing's Changed is one of those get back at your man songs. Talk To My Heart is a nice ballad that Tina dedicated to her mother who died right before the album was released. One of the best rock numbers is Go Ahead, which was written and produced by 80's rocker, and former Tina duet partner, Bryan Adams. Another favorite track is Go Ahead. With lyrics like "You see my smiling, but you paint an ugly face. Everything you do is all about the chase", its a brilliantly written song. The final, & title track is 24/7. Another highlight with great energy by Tina.

A month after the albums release in America, Tina set out on her 100 date farewell concert tour. The tour broke records all across the world and became the biggest money maker of 2000. All though it was her last tour, rest assure this wont be her last piece of music. At least I hope not.

Let's get one thing straight - if you're a self-respecting punk, don't get this album. This is unabashed power pop. They don't even try to hind behind "indie-pop" or "melodic emo" - this is cheerful, sunny perfectly-crafted bubblegum pop that brings to mind the Hollies. It's fantastic if you can stomach it.

      Album Description

Bizarre. That's the best way to describe Realized @ 21 Walnut, a somewhat conceptual avant-garde collection from New York artist John Tabacco. With songs and collages that include people moaning, someone repeating the word "cheesburger" and, well, lots of other strange things, this is easily an East Coast version of Frank Zappa. (The disc, incidently, is dedicated to Zappa.) At the very least you can give Tabacco (yep, real name) credit for completely disregarding the norm. These tracks can be unsettling - a guy sounds like he's being tortured on "Smokey Lee Webster Wrestles Wid IT" - but they're always thoroughly challenging. In between his instrumental muzak and recordings from a road trip years ago, there are in fact actual songs here. But those songs are still far from what's expected. Tabacco, with help from a few friends, takes on a show tune, '80s-ish R&B, and of course, ideas explored by Zappa. Strong influences from aliens, conspiracy theories, et al. are also present, revealing paranoia ("It's out there feeding on itself...it's following my every move.") Whether you want to use this for a haunted house or a case study in insanity, it's something different indeed.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The only Tabacco that's good for you!.......2005-04-07

If you are looking for a musical artist with the perfect blend of infectious hook and sound-collage apocalypse, then John Tabacco is definitely for you. Baked in the sonic kiln of Messrs. Lennon & McCartney, Signor Zappa, and a guy from Queens by name of Paul Simon, Tabacco represents a fiercely strong kind of music. You don't just listen to these songs - these songs "happen" to you. His songwriting hangs in a kind of psychoacoustic purgatory, where the beauty of the melody in a song like "Sensitive Joan" is smudged by the ash-smeared thumbprint of the lyrics - never has harassment, bigotry, and hypocrisy sounded this lovely. As a songwriter, he soothes - as a composer, he seethes. In the deconstructed bonecave that has become "pop," Tabacco stands alone as perhaps the last tunesmith in the world awake enough to realize that music exists even if the universe doesn't.
