    Album Description

A collection of three tales inspired by the legends of the native Ojibway people and features the voice talent of Lorne Cardinal ("Corner Gas" TV series) as well as all-new chamber music written for young audiences. The album's title refers to the Ojibway tradition where each storyteller had a bag containing items that would serve as reminders of their stories.

CMSM Artistic Director Peggy (McGuire) Hills created and produced The Storyteller's Bag as an outreach educational program to fire the imaginations of the Mississauga community with an exciting mix of chamber music, theatre and Aboriginal storytelling.

EMI's "society" subscription editions in the 1930s yielded a wealth of recordings long considered gramophone classics, such as the present collection of roughly half of Hugo Wolf's lieder output. Each song occupies its own specific world, due to Wolf's resourceful word setting and his avoidance of anything generic. In turn, the performers illuminate each song's felicities with effortless authority, and they avoid overpointing or enacting. Full texts and translations are included. Ernest Newman's penetrating annotations for the original 78 albums, reprinted in EMI's 1981 LP reissue, are absent. --Jed Distler

5 out of 5 stars The Hugo Wolf Society Recordings.......2005-12-28

The songs of Hugo Wolf (1860 -- 1903)combine great attention to textual detail with closely intertwined writing for the voice and the piano. In this small form, Wolf was a master and took song in a different direction from that of Schubert, Schumann and Brahms. He wrote most of his songs in bursts of activity in five large collections, devoted to the poetry of Morike, Eichendorff, Goethe, and to collections of Spanish and Italian texts. He also composed a number of songs in shorter sets.

In the early 1930s, a young Walter Legge began a project of recording Wolf songs on a subscribtion basis to be limited to 500 sets. The recording industry was relatively new, and Wolf, then as now, too little appreciated. The result was an extensive series of recordings of issued between 1931 and 1938 consisting of 145 songs, about one-half Wolf's output, performed by fourteen singers. The Hugo Wolf Society recordings remain a high moment in the recording of song. They were remastered on LPs and, in 1998, in this 5 CD collection which includes previously unreleased selections.

The Wolf Society collection offers an unparalleled opportunity to get to know Wolf's songs performed by artists of the past that might otherwise be unfamiliar to many listeners. The performers include mezzo-soprano Elena Gerhardt, who recorded the initial volume for the society, baritones Herbert Janssen, Gerhard Husch, tenors John McCormack, Karl Erb, and Helge Roswaenge, the basses Alexander Kipnis, Frederich Schorr, and Ludwig Weber, and sopranos Alexandra Trianti, Elizabeth Rethberg, Ria Ginster, Marta Fuchs, and Tiana Lemnitz. The pianists include Conrad Bos, Gerald Moore, Michael Raucheisen, Hans Udo Muller, and Ernest Victor Wolff.

The singers perform in a variety of styles from the highly operatic to the quietly lyrical. There is a Wagnerian performance of Goethe's "Prometheus" by Friedrich Schorr with the London Symphony Orchestra -- the only track using an orchestral accompaniment. The Irish tenor John McCormack shows a more lyrical approach in his renowned performance of Goethe's poem "Ganymed". The sopranos, Alexandra Trianti, Ria Ginster, and Tiana Lemitz have light, clear, bell-like voices. I find the singers on this compilation take a much more individualized, idiosyncratic, and romantic approach to song than do their modern counterparts, who sometimes seem restrained and chaste by comparison.

Each of Wolf's great collections of songs is well-represented. Elena Gerhardt performs songs from each of Wolf's five books, with the exception of the Goethe songs. The young Alexander Kipnis gives a powerful reading of Wolf's three songs from Michaelangelo. The third CD in this collection features many songs from the Italian songbook performed by soprano Ginster, baritone Husch, and bass Kipnis together with recordings from the Spanish songbook by sopranos Rethberg and Ginster and baritone Husch. There are lovely performances by soprano Tiana Lemnitz in the previously uncollected supplementary material, which also includes several Eichendorff songs and a performance of the Goethe-song "Phanomen" by Alexander Kipnis.

There is a great amount of material in this collection, with each of the 5 CDs including in excess of 70 minutes of music. Most of Wolf's songs are highly concentrated and intense. They may prove difficult to the listener coming to them knowing only the lyricism of Schubert. I would not recommend trying to rush through this set at one or two hearings. It is best to take this music in small sections and to listen with text in hand. The compilation includes texts and translations for each of the songs together with good notes about the Wolf Society recording project. There is little discussion about Wolf or about the songs themselves.

This is an essential collection for those who love song, historical recordings, and the music of Hugo Wolf.

5 out of 5 stars "Even little things can delight us.".......2003-06-02

If these six words give an approximate translation of the song "Auch kleine Dinge", then they might also describe a music lover's reaction as he makes a journey of exploration through the hundreds of little songs composed by Hugo Wolf.

Walter Legge, a very young EMI record producer in the 1930s, first made such a journey possible when he pioneered the Hugo Wolf Society and began releasing the volumes now reissued in this boxed set. Many singers were invited to participate. Legge's choice of singers was sometimes idiosyncratic. You might wonder how an Irish tenor, a Ukrainian bass and a Greek soprano were admitted to the roster. The results, however, especially in the case of the contributions of John McCormack and Alexander Kipnis, prove the sureness of his instincts.

About half Wolf's songs were made available in the original issue, between 1931 and 1938. With this reissue comes unused and hitherto unissued recordings, many by Tiana Lemnitz and Herbert Jannsen. So there is now more to discover and exploration is made easier for us in 2003 than it was in the 1930s. The remastering has improved the sound, Legge's widow Dame Elisabeth Schwarzkopf is able to provide a perceptive introduction in an accompanying booklet, and the texts of the songs are now provided in German and English.

5 out of 5 stars Wolf sung by various Lieder singers.......2000-08-15

This is an extraordinary collection of Wolf songs. It is frustrating that the project was not completed, as the quality of what was recorded is so extraordinarily revelatory. My personal favourites are the Michelangelo settings sung by the bass Alexander Kipnis, although he uncharacteristically makes some textual errors. The contributions of Hüsch are numerous and thoughtfully sung, and Karl Erb, Herbert Janssen, Ludwig Weber, Rita Ginster and Marta Fuchs are all caught on extraordinary form, with accompanists of admittedly variable quality, ranging from the sublime Gerald Moore to some very interesting contributions from some accompanists who did not really capture the true essence of Lieder accompanying, which surely cannot permit the piano to be subservient to the voice!

These precious recordings offer us so much. They are a document of a golden age of Lieder singing, and they are superb recitals, sung by a variety of voices, never allowing the listener to tire of listening to a single voice for too long. They are also, of course, examples of some of the most wonderful Lieder writing of any time. These 5 cds are a must for a Lieder specialist, and can open new doors to the novice. Buy them, and never regret having this treasure trove which will give you pleasure all your life.

    Amazon.com essential recording

Thomas Beecham's Magic Flute is among the most famous opera recordings ever made. It has been available for more than 60 years, most recently on CD transfers from EMI, Pearl, and Nimbus. The last of these, first issued in 1991, appeared in a luxurious box set with complete libretto (including the spoken dialogue, omitted on the recording itself); the current release is identical except that it is in a slim package with a plot summary but no libretto. The reasons for the longevity of this recording are not hard to find. Producer Walter Legge assembled about as good a cast as could be persuaded to come to Berlin for the 1937-39 recording sessions, and they are all fine singers who understand and are totally committed to the music. But what stands out most are the inspired playing of the Berlin Philharmonic, always crisp and expressive (once you get used to the desiccated quality of the 1930s monaural sound), and the conducting of Beecham, who brought to the work a combination of wit and nobility that has not been surpassed. There are modern recordings in much better sound (for example, the version by Georg Solti), but none offer more musical insight than this one. --Alex Morin

5 out of 5 stars One of the great recordings of all time!.......2000-08-02

With good reason, this recording of Mozart's sublimely silly masterpiece has never been out of the catalog since it was released in the late 1930's. The singers are mostly an outstanding group--Tiana Lemnitz, Helge Rosvaenge, Gerhard Hüsch...(who is arguably the finest Papageno ever put on wax, vinyl, tape, or aluminum backing). What makes it such a wonder, however, is Sir Thomas Beecham's leadership, at the helm of the Berlin Philharmonic. Beecham, more so than any other conductor, knows how to strike the right balance between the slapstick silliness of some scenes and the gloriously solemn atmosphere of others. What truly makes Sir Thomas' interpretation unique is that he makes both aspects of the opera part of a whole--conceived in Mozart's own dualistic mind. I can think of no other better performance of this masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Famous and historic recording.......2006-01-17

This set is the very definition of the phrase, "famous recording." It was recorded in Berlin in 1937-38 and has not been out of print since then. Amazon, I see, currently carries it in four or five competing versions. Of them, I suspect that the most satisfactory sound is to be found on the Naxos re-issue, but that version appears to be on the verge of dropping out of the catalogue.

For many years, this was the only available near-complete recording of "Die Zauberfloete," and it is still the definitive recorded version in the minds of many older fans. Because it was issued on 78-rpm records that played for a bit over three minutes apiece, the complete opera would have required about forty sides, or more than twenty records, all to be sold in bound albums of five records each. Just lifting such a thing would be an effort, let alone paying for it.* As a strictly practical and commercial decision, Walter Legge, the producer, decided to forgo recording the spoken dialogue.

The cast was a very strong one for the time--and for ours, too--but it was not entirely the cast that Beecham and Legge had originally planned. Since the Berlin Philharmonic was one of the chief selling points of the production, the opera had to be recorded in Berlin. Some of the originally chosen performers chose not to risk themselves within the grasp of the Third Reich. More than that, despite the fact that the "Zauberfloete" recording was an English initiative, produced by an English company, with an English conductor, it was regarded as so much a showpiece of German Kultur that the Reich Propaganda Minister was determined that it be performed by singers whom he regarded as possessing sufficiently Aryan background.

Leaving politics behind, this is a great performance. Beecham's overall concept remains as brilliant today as it was almost seventy years ago. The singers are as good as any today, although they reflect a different performing style from our present one. Helge Rosvaenge, for instance, had a much heavier voice than the typical Tamino of today, and he was associated with operatic roles that our current Taminos could never touch. Erna Berger, The Queen of the Night, sounds like nobody singing today--trust me on that! She is stupendous, nevertheless.

I am assigning five stars to this "Magic Flute" for its artistic value and its historic interest. While I cannot recommend this set to anyone as a first or only recording of Mozart's operatic masterwork, I enthusiastically urge it on anyone who desires a second or back-up set.

      * Believe it or not, Karajan's first recording of the "Die Meistersinger" was issued in 78-rpm format--68 sides on 34 records.

      2 out of 5 stars Magic Flute-Complete Opera.......2000-09-15

This is a 1933 recording of the most beautiful opera Mozart ever composed. I found the static on the cd distracting, and I was more than alittle upset over the lack of a libretto. I have heard other recordings that do the opera justice, and let one feel the music. I would not buy this again.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Opera for Beginning Opera Fans.......2000-07-24

The Magic Flute is, by far, the most upbeat, moving, and all around enjoyable opera for anyone just being introduced to the opera scene. The plot is quite easy to get into and is very easily understood just in listening to the music even if one doesn't speak one word of German. The english translation is also available for those who would like to follow along with the players. The music ranges from upbeat and happy to slower and romantic to lively and exciting, and is perfectly suited to each characters personality. This is a must have for new and veteran opera goers alike.

It really is the most magical "Zauberfloete" you can have - if you are not fussy about the MONO sound. This is a great interpretation (voted one of the 75 greatest recordings of all times by the readers of "Gramophone") and the lack of stereo really does not matter, especially when the recorded sound is so clean! A real feast for Mozartians!

5 out of 5 stars Major diva from the past.......2005-10-07

Maria Cebotari was a big-time diva who flourished in grim times. This recording of both familiar and unfamiliar material is well worth hearing.

The infamous Amazon gremlins have clearly been camping out on this review site. It really would be nice to know just which Pfitzner performance of Beethoven was so good. And I've looked all over Amazon, but I can't find a single recording of "Madam Butterful," not even the beloved Spike Jones version. As for "Salame," there's not a slice to be found.

        5 out of 5 stars Exceptionally Dramatic!.......2005-10-06

[...] This recording is of Maria Cebotari. She was a great star in Germany before and during the time of Hitler, which for some can make her recordings less desirable. However, one should look at her artistry not the political background in which she sang. Not only did this incredible artist sing, she was also in movies, including a movie version of Madam Butterful. She was a exceptionally beautiful woman. She was also an extremely well prepared artist, knowing her music completely before even attending a rehearsal. Like the other famous "Maria" (Callas) she infused everything she did with dramatic truth. However, one great difference between the two artists is Maria Cebotari didn't have to create "ugly" sounds to do what she did.

Her voice is one of very dark coloration. It is not bright and sparkling, which lends itself perfectly to the heavy dramatic music she sang. Even though she sang Mozart, and extremely well, her most often sung composers were R. Strauss and Puccini. Here we are honored to hear her interpretations of Strauss opera. We begin the recording with the moving final scene from Salame. I have heard this opera by many singers, and have many modern recordings of the work (one of my favorite singers in this role is Jessye Norman). Though some would argue that her dark, nearly possessed, sound is not "girlish" enough for the character, I would beg to differ. She doesn't sound girlish at all, that is true, but any young women so obsessed with wanting a man she demands his head so she can kiss it is, well, anything but girlish.

Her other selections from Strauss are equally exciting. Some of them we may be more familiar with (from Rosenkavalier, and paired with other singers; how her voice works with them!) while others are less so. The extract from "Dafne" is remarkable. The opera itself is rather strange, but has some interesting music in it. The opera Feuersnot is not well known to most, but what we hear is something quite interesting. Cebotari infuses the music with that special something that really makes it take off. In this selection she is not singing alone, so one has more of a sense of what she would have been like on stage with her fellow singers. And by the way, her fellow singer is Karl Schmitt-Walter, who does a wondrous job in his part. He is a singer well worth finding other recordings of. The opera "Taillefer" is completely unknown to me. However, again with other singers really presenting something wonderful akin to a performance, we hear wonderful music and the inner drama. Again, Cebotari shines, not over-shadowing those she is singing with, but complementing their stellar performances, giving us a real presentation of her work.

I highly recommend this recording to anyone who wishes to hear a truly wonderful singing, one who is exceptionally dramatic, but never pushed or ugly in sound. She is truly a wondrous artist that is not as well known to those outside Germany as she should be.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Performance ..........2001-06-05

I heard this extraordinary recording first, last week, on the original 78. Yes, there is a higher than normal noise-floor but this fact should not deter one from listening to Pfitzner's startling, moving performance. Pfitzner, somehow, finds an optimistic, liquid, and lyrical voice for this pre-holocaust performance that is neither maudlin nor didactic. It is, instead, breath-taking in its sensitivity to Beethoven's sense of orchestral color. In his rendering of nature, Pfitzner is emotional engaging for his tempos and lyricism.

I sincerely wonder if any post-holocaust conductor would dare imbibe of the innocence why reveling in the passion Beethoven's extraordinary symphony suggests. This performance has caused me to re-think both how this symphony might be rendered as well as how we might recover Pfitzner's sense of lyrical optimism today.

2 out of 5 stars 79 minutes of "Der Freischütz" recorded live in the 1930s. .......2004-09-15

Internet browsers with long memories and wrinkled brows will probably hope that favorite German singers of the 1930s will be heard at work here and will "show up well". The CD comprises recordings from two performances: one given in Berlin in 1936 conducted by Heinrich Steiner, the other at Salzburg in August 1939 where Hans Knappertsbusch is responsible for some very slow tempi. Whether it is wanted or not, the Overture is here, leaving only 70 minutes to sample the singing. Tiana Lemnitz is absolutely gorgeous in her two arias: the first is not quite complete, and the second, although at an incredibly slow pace, never catches her out of breath. Marcel Wittrisch, a striking mixture of heldentenor and 1930s crooner, is heard here and there though not in Max's Act 1 aria. What we hear of Max in most of Acts 1 and 2 in sung by Franz Völker. Michael Bohnen, to whom all the enclosed notes are dedicated, hams the role of Kaspar. Gerhard Hüsch's honeyed, forthright baritone contributes a few phrases in the Act 3 excerpts. Irma Beilke, as Ännchen, is heard in some lively dialogue and (distantly) about half her second aria.

I hope this satisfies curiosity to some extent and helps collectors make a choice.

5 out of 5 stars Famous and historic recording.......2006-01-19

Save for the fact that I think the Papageno is just fine, I heartily agree with Mr. Austin's comments.

Just lifting such a thing would be an effort, let alone paying for it. As a strictly practical and commercial decision, Walter Legge, the producer, decided to forgo recording the spoken dialogue.

The cast was a very strong one for the time--and for ours, too--but it was not entirely the cast that Beecham and Legge had originally planned, as Mr. Austin has explained. Even so, Beecham's overall concept remains as brilliant today as it was almost seventy years ago. The recorded singers are as good as any today, but it should be noted that they reflect a different performing style from our present one. Helge Rosvaenge, for instance, had a much heavier voice than the typical Tamino of today, and he was associated with operatic roles that our current Taminos could never touch. The Queen of the Night, Erna Berger, sounds like nobody singing today--trust me on that! She is stupendous, nevertheless.

While I can't recommend this famous and venerable set to anyone as a first or only "Zauberfloete" because of its unimpressive sound reproduction and its lack of dialogue, I strongly urge it as everyone's second set.

Five stars for historic importance and performance quality.

4 out of 5 stars Has any opera recording been reissued more times than this?.......2001-11-01

This famous recording, now more than sixty years old, must have been reissued more times than any other recorded version of any opera. Is this due to the incomparable Beecham magic? I heard one famous conductor, who recorded the opera himself, say that he didn't fully discern the particular pulse, nor the mixture of gravity and sparkle in the music until he listened to this Beecham recording.

Those who know and have lived with this recording will need no urging to enjoy this inexpensive and preferred new transfer. To others, looking perhaps for a first purchase of a great Mozart opera, I should provide a few cautions. Firstly, no spoken dialogue is included. Secondly, the sound quality, even for a studio recording in the period 1937-1938, is often poor and never more than passable. The beautiful music for the three "ladies" and the three "boys" fares particularly badly, and no modern transfer has been able to clarify it. Thirdly, the political situation existing in Berlin at the time meant that several of the singers selected by Beecham - Richard Tauber as Tamino, Alexander Kipnis as Sarastro, and Herbert Janssen as the Speaker - could not risk their lives by accepting. Their replacements, or a least two of them, are not impressive as regards style and steadiness.

Erna Berger's Queen of the Night somehow posed no problem for the recording equipment. A long-kept secret was the fact that the take to be finally selected of her first aria was made in Beecham's absence.

Music lovers have always ranked highly the singing of Gerhard Hüsch as Papageno. I sometimes wonder, however, whether the opera's librettist and first Papageno, Emanuel Schikaneder, ever intended that this bird catcher looking for a mate should sound like an aristocrat.

In short, there is much here that no one should miss hearing, but some inadequacies are to be expected.

        2 out of 5 stars Good as a starter...not much more.......2001-03-27

I'm a huge fan of Die Zauberflote...since birth, almost. Until recently, I haven't had the money to buy a recording of the music, so when I saw this less-expensive version in a store, I took my chance. Unfortunately, I am quite disappointed. If you're just looking for a modest copy of this opera, stop reading here, and buy it...it's not terrible. If you like the opera as much as I do, keep looking for another version (my favorites are the two in which either Barbara Bonney or Kiri Te Kanawa take on the role of Pamina). This version lacks the clarity of music, range of emotion, and element of playfulness that I was hoping for. It also doesn't have any of the dialogue, which I miss, and it also lacks good, solid basses; they're okay, but they're a bit unstable on intonation. I was also greatly disappointed to hear three female voices on the "three boys" roles; they don't substitute well for the clarity and lightness that I enjoy. Overall, I'd say this is a good starter version if you're simply looking to build your library, but keep looking if you want higher quality (see above for my recommendation of two other versions).
