One of the greatest records you never heard.......2007-04-28
I fell in love with the single, "Forever," the first time I heard it and thought the album was even better. I played this record so much, I just assumed everyone else was into it, too. It wasn't like anything else on the radio, which is probably why it barely cracked the charts. Still, it has terrific songs ("Princess of Little Italy" is a gem), lots of musical muscle, lots of heart, and lots of brains, too. There's some great songwriting on this record, some great imagery. Don't buy it because you like Springsteen. Don't buy it because you like "The Sopranos." Buy it because it's great.
If Only It Didn't Become A Budget-Buster.......2006-11-15
Steve Van Zandt is probably better known today as a cast member on The Sopranos, a radio DJ with a syndicated FM show and a guitarist for Bruce Springsteen when he decides to gig with the E. Street Band.
Van Zandt had left Springsteen to form his own band and release this Stax/Volt-influenced album in 1982. The songs were loosely based on Men Without Women, a 1927 collection of short stories by Ernest Hemingway. The initial plans for the album and ensuing promotion was absolutely fantastic; an all-star cast of studio performers, a band that featured the outstanding bass player, Jean Beauvoir, and Felix Cavaliere on piano/organ, and the production of a long-form movie, with the album being the soundtrack.
But Van Zandt did not have a safety net that an established hit-maker like Springsteen could use when the project came in well over budget. Though the album received decent reviews, it could only stagger to a ranking of 118 on the Billboard 200, with the single, Forever, stopping at number 40 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The music has held up well over the ensuing 25 years and remains - depending on how one views the project - a tribute to a musician who wanted to test the bounds of innovation for his first project, or a plan closer to another Hemingway title for a short-story collection, Winner Take Nothing.
Second best album ever.......2006-06-17
The best album and by that I mean the most important, is Darkness on the Edge of Town. Add the Jukes' horn section and Miami Steve's songwriting to Darkness and you have Men Without Women. Both albums give you the strength to carry on, to not give in, to fight. If you want to survive without compromise, whatever the cost, because anything else would be to lose yourself, buy both these records. You will never regret it. And you will survive.
Forget Born To Run..........2005-06-23
Men Without Women, along with Southside Johnny's Hearts Of Stone, are the best albums to ever come out of Asbury Park. Just becasue they came after Bruce doesn't mean they couldn't surpass him. As complete albums, MWW and HOS top anything the Boss has done before or since.
MIAMI STEVE HITS A HOMER THE 1ST TIME OUT.......2004-07-14
With the help of a few E-Streeters, a handful of Jukes and even a Plasmatic, Miami Steve knocks the ball out of the park on his first solo album. I was lucky enough to catch Little Steven And The Disciples Of Soul play most of this album live at The Bayou (R.I.P.) on December 19, 1982 right after picking it up on vinyl. It's a shame that it isn't properly represented on the Greatest Hits CD. For some tasty Jersey tunes, look no further.

Great Double-Disc Set Of Little Steven.......2007-04-02
MEN WITHOUT WOMEN/VOICE OF AMERICA is a great double-disc set of Little Steven Van Zandt, who achieved fame as Bruce Springsteen's guitarist, as a solo artist. The MEN WITHOUT WOMEN disc is a great example of 80s blue-eyed soul that was refreshing in an era when synth-op such as ABC and Duran Duran ruled the roost. This disc contains a great mix of soulful horns, guitars, keyboards, and vocals. The VOICE OF AMERICA portion of this anthology, finds Van Zandt taking on the role of a committed human-rights activist, protesting against both leftist and right-wing dictatorships and calling for people to take charge of the world around them, a theme that is, alas, even more relevant today. Van Zandt's belief that the young Australian tourist jailed in Indonesia since 2005 for drug-smuggling was unjustly convicted also makes this collection an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.
STEVE VAN ZANDT AT HIS BRILLIANT BEST - AN ALL TIME GREAT RECORDING.......2006-03-26
Yes, Sopranos is fun & Steven's very funny in it, a natural actor.
More important, he's a strong reason Bruce Springsteen is such an immense success with the E Street Band. Little Steven is a superb musician & songsmith -- great melodies, beautiful words.
The Men Without Women disc is a great one, sure joy compared to a lot of the drivel taking up the space in your brain today.
But in VOICE OF AMERICA, Little Steven Van Zandt was touched by the greatest spirits in the universe. It's simply ONE OF THE GREATEST collections of songs on a disc EVER MADE, yowzuh, right up there with Dylan, Lennon, U2, R.E.M. & the others who fill out your top ten. And thank gawd IT'S FINALLY RE-ISSUED! A mint condition copy of VOA sold on Amazon for $160 as recent as last week. My original copy was borrowed and never returned.
I've been aching to get this sound back.
The songs VOICE OF AMERICA, I AM A PATRIOT (absolutely the best arrangement ever produced, notwithstanding the covers of it by great singers all over the world), JUSTICE, SOLIDARITY -- they're all superbly crafted songs, real works of art that will stand up to be cheered a thousand years from now.
You should be sold. You should buy a couple of copies so you can give one to the most special person in your life.
Thank you Steve, for this great gift to the world.

ps: 15 years ago I produced 4 half-hours on the radio, called "Dear Abbie! A Celebration of the Words of Abbie Hoffman."
I was permitted to use Steven's songs from VOA, and all the songs on the series except two were from VOICE OF AMERICA.
Best series I ever produced.
Out of the Darkness.......2006-03-10
A great many viewers discovered Little Steven/ Miami Steve Van Zandt from The Sopranos. Time Warp backwards, he was a member of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band. In between he was a social activist, and created the (Don't Play) Sun City album project encouraging artists to boycott the South African resort in an effort to bring an end to apartheid.
I've heard Men Without Women and own Born Again Savage, but I think Little Steven's Voice of America is not only his best work, it's one of the best early '80s albums period. Checkpoint Charlie was prescient in predicting the fall of the Berlin wall: "Wall so high, gotta come down baby." If the news knew anything about popular culture, they would have played that (or The Walls Came Down by the Call) as the soundtrack of that historic moment. The list of great songs goes on and on: "Los Disparacidos (The Disappeared,:" "Undefeated," and especially the piece de resistance, "Out of the Darkness," one of the few songs which, like U2's One, manages to combine relationships aned spirituality. The Boss wrote "Blood Brother" when Steve left the band to pursue these various pursuits. How sad that just when Born in the USA gained the questionable honor of making the cover of Time magazine, his bandmates' best album slipped into obscurity. Hopefully with this double release the Voice of America will for the first time be heard.
Outstanding.......2006-01-09
If you are a fan of Steven Van Zandt you are of course familiar with these two albums. Here is your chance to get them both together (this comes as a two cd set, not both albums on one cd).
The remaster job is excellent, there are also some great liner notes and pictures, BGO did a first class job on this reissue.
There is not much need to go into the music as I am sure that any reading this already know how great these two albums are. Little Steven is great, pure and simple. He writes terrific songs, he is an outstanding singer/guitar player, the band is top notch. and the production is tight.
I highly recommend this set , for 18.99 you can not possibly go wrong.

Customer Reviews:
More than just choral works.......2006-04-20
These choral works from Gustav Holst are as striking as the Planets. They are like two dozen angels singing with heavenly glory. A Choral Fantasia, The Cloud Messenger and The Hymn of Jesus are excellent; superb playing from the London Symphony, breathtaking and articulate singing from the Chorus. Ode to Death & A Dirge for Two Veterans are absolutely haunting. The Part-songs are worth the listen, and the Ave Maria and the Motets sound fresh and fabulous.
If you are a fan of Holst's Planets, then you'll be an immediate fan of his choral works once you start listening to The Cloud Messenger.
Get This For the Hymn of Jesus.......2002-09-07
How many of you are sick of the Planets! I know I am, as marvelous as I find that work. Holst was a much more varied and talented composer than that work reveals. On this disc you can hear a wide variety of Holst's choral music and judge for yourself.
I can only comment on half this disc, as I own the Cloud Messanger and the Hymn of Jesus only in an earlier incarnation. The Cloud Messanger is a massive work based on an Hindu text. It is of variable quality...Holst himself flet that it was not wholy a success and supressed further performances of it in his lifetime. But the passages that are good are stunning indeed, and Hickox and crew make a strong case for the work.
The reason to get this CD is for the Hymn of Jesus. This is the best performance of the best work that Holst composed. The Hymn of Jesus is based on Holst's own translation of a passage from the Gnostic Gospel of Thomas ( some sources claim the Acts of John as the origin of this text, but I'm pretty sure I have it in my copy of the Gospel of Thomas, which had recently been discovered at the time.)These Gnostic texts so intrigued Holst that he studied Greek just to be able to read it in the original. The work begins with a beautiful, atmospheric prelude based on two Sarum chants, Panea Lingua and a resplendant Vexilla Regis in the boy choir. Then there is a massive choral invocation to God and the Hymn is sung. This text is also known as the Round Dance of Jesus, and Holst goes for the dance in the piece, with a splendid section in 5/4 which must have frightened the Edwardian audience at the work's premiere. Tightly organized and stunning in it's choral effects, this version of the work surpasses even the fine old recording by Sir Charles Grove.
I can't comment on the performances of the other works on the second disc, but know that the Ode to Death is haunting and the Choral Fantasia is a major work worth hearing. But the reason to buy this album is for the Hymn. It's a stunning and neglected masterpiece in the English choral tradition.
An important record of lesser known choral works . . ........2000-08-08
. . . but I wish they'd used a large choral force.
My primary interest in this CD was the recording of the relatively recently re-discovered (1984) major choral work "The Cloud Messenger." From Holst's "India" period, this is a stunningly beautiful "painting" of the Khalidasa 6th Century A.D. lyric poem, "Meghaduta" ("Cloud Messenger"), the lament of an exiled yaksa who is pining for his beloved on a lonely mountain peak. When, at the beginning of the monsoon, a cloud perches on the peak, he asks it to deliver a message to his love in the Himalayan city of Alaka. Most of the poem consists of a description of the landmarks, cities, and terrain on the cloud's route to Alaka, interspersed with admonishments to the cloud to "Tarry not!" It is only at the end that we are finally aware of the message itself -- one intended to comfort the yaksa's wife in her loneliness.
I had the privilege of singing the U.S. premiere of this work in 1996 with Masterworks Chorale in San Mateo, CA, a chorus of about 150 auditioned singers. This work needs such a large choral force, and a conductor who can deal with the inherent drama in the text. We had both, and the performance was a stunning success. (It was the final work on a program that opened with Debussy's "La damoiselle Elue" for women's voices and mezzo-soprano and soprano soloists; and Brahms' "Alto Rhapsody" for men's voices and mezzo-soprano soloist. "The Cloud Messenger" also includes a mezzo-soprano soloist.)
My biggest complaint with this recording is the dynamics. The entire work seems to be performed at about mf+, occasionally venturing into f and mp. Unfortunately, this doesn't do justice to the drama. The opening, for example, needs to grow from the first ppp gentle raindrops, building as the cloud builds in strength, to a glorious ff choral introduction of the main character, the cloud: "O Thou, who com'st from heaven's king! scion of a noble race! who wearest wondrous forms at will!"
There are parts of this work that beg for a lush warm sound; what we hear on this recording is the British "boy choir" sound in the treble range, while the men have a warmer (albeit somewhat watered down) tone. This is a highly sensuous work, full of luscious ripe sensual imagery: "Where e'er thou goest, lonely wives, who pine in solitude with close-bound hair, will arise and go along the road. Thou bringest home their absent husbands, who will loosen their tresses and fill their hearts with joy!" The "flat" sound of pre-pubescent boys just doesn't do this music, or mature text, justice.
That said, however, this is an important recording of a little-known work. You'll get the feeling of the piece, a sense of the promise. Let's hope that a large chorus paired with a sensitive conductor will have an opportunity at another recording of this in the not-too-distant future (Atlanta? Chicago?).
Contrast this with "The Hymn of Jesus" -- Hickox fares much better with this material, playing up the dance rhythms (Holst knew what he was doing -- at the climax of the piece, the words are: "Ye who dance not, know not what we are knowing.") It really is a first-rate performance of this work.
Other works deserving special mention are "Dirge for Two Veterans," in which one can hear hints of "Mars" from "The Planets"; "Ode to Death," a setting of Walt Whitman's "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd," which contains allusions to "Saturn." The Four Partsongs on the second disk are among Holst's earliest works, written in 1894, when he was barely 20 yrs old and in his second year at the Royal College of Music; and the Choral Fantasia is among his later choral works, written in 1931.
Highly recommended, even with its flaws.

Heart and Soul on a Budget.......2003-04-23
This is likely one of the best budget titles you could buy. Seven of the ten cuts appear on The Soul of O.V. Wright, so if you have that one, don't buy this (unless you really need those other songs). But for the money, you get O.V.'s four biggest Back Beat hits ("Eight Men, Four Women" "Ace Of Spades" "You're Gonna Make Me Cry" "A Nickel and a Nail"), plus enough of his other songs to give you an idea of the depth of this man's talent. Two other songs, "If It's Only for Tonight" and "Gone For Good" came from album sources. "What More Can I Do" is more rare. It was released on ABC Records after that label purchased Back Beat (along with Duke and Peacock) from its owner, Don Robey. While it was a medium-sized hit, O.V. either chose to leave or was shown the door by ABC, shortly thereafter. But he was soon to sign with Hi Records (whose president, Willie Mitchell was O.V.'s regular producer), where he continued to record until the time of his death in 1980.

Customer Reviews:
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS CD.......2006-12-06
This is one CD I never tire of! Everyone I have turned on to this CD feels the same way! The music is timeless.
Eh.......2006-05-09
While it's a good sampler cd (as are all the Essential Blues from the House of Blues series), I have one complaint:
The formating of the discs from this pressing seem to be VERY tempermental for some computer cd drives.
USA's Huge Musical Contribution.......2002-12-19
Every time I hear a really great blues recording, like this one, I realize anew that this is where we achieved our finest moment in making a permanent, unassailable contribution to modern music. If you hear other, more modern, and most especially WHITE singers, doing these numbers, they are NOT the ones that did it first. Black Americans are the absolute center of this music and these women, every single one of them, is the real thing, the first modern musical artists. I really liked the idea too of breaking these albums up into special sectors with this one focusing solely on the authentic blues women. The male artists in this genre are very different from the women so it really makes sense to listen to them separately. Sometimes I feel as if the UKers might be leaving us in the dust musically but not when I listen to this album and the others like it, forming the core of America's musical contribution to the best of what we hear today. I think this would make an especially great gift to a friend in another country who thinks our major contribution was Elvis Presley. In fact, it might even make a great gift for Americans who remain oblivious to this national heritage and contribution!
Great Retrospective.......2001-12-20
This is a great CD set for the Blues afficionato as well as those just getting their feet wet. The songs cover the spectrum from classic to contemporary, and the recording sounds excellent. The closest thing I have to a complaint about it is that it might have been nice if the songs were organized more chronologically so that the musical and stylistic evolutions were more gradual and kinder to the listening ear. Still, this is by far my favorite collection, and my most listened to blues CD.
Dynamite music, great fun........1999-08-19
This is without a doubt one of the most enjoyable and fun CD sets I've heard in a long time. I am even ordering two more sets for a friend to give as gifts. It would be hard to pick favorites here, but Ruth Brown, Candye Kane, Alberta Hunter and Bessie Smith would be at the top. Anyone who likes vintage and contemporary blues would do well to buy this set.

One of the most ambitious box sets yet, the five-CD Respect distills 89 years of recorded women's voices. Disparate styles and attitudes meet and mix with each other in the crosstalk, with personal, social, and musical values melding into an astounding whole. Attentive fans of pop music will probably find most of their major discoveries on the first two discs; for instance, Anna Chandler's 1916 "She's Good Enough to Be Your Baby's Mother and She's Good Enough to Vote with You" may very well find the listener with her or his mouth hanging open. Those unfamiliar with Loretta Lynn's "The Pill," X-Ray Spex's "Identity," or Queen Latifah and Monie Love's "Ladies First" are also likely to be shocked into big grins and furiously nodding heads. The connections to be made here are endless: spinning these largely chronologically sequenced discs in order is mind- and ear-expanding enough, but it's also fun to play, for example, Kitty Wells's "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels" and Dusty Springfield's "Son of a Preacher Man" back to back. "We Belong Together," Rickie Lee Jones insists near the end of disc four, and it's hard not to imagine that she's singing to every other woman on Respect. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
It's not Rhino's fault..........2002-03-23
I love this boxed set, but my main mission here is to fill some of you in. Yes, the collection would be better with Joni Mitchell, but if you bothered to read the liner notes, you'd know that SHE is the one who said she would never allow any of her work to be on any collection of strictly women musicians.
A great collection with a few minor flaws..........2001-10-17
I bought this and I think I will get it for all my girlfriends this year. The first three CD's are alone worth the price and the box and book inside are also lovely.
The only thing that bothered me about this collection was the lack of Joni Mitchell, Annie Lennox and the Indigo Girls. I like everything else about it. But these three artist deserve a place amoung these other great women (as much as Paula Cole I don't know why she's on here.)
The early jazz and blues stuff is great!! CD 4 is good and thank god for Joan Baez!
All in all a good collection and a nice gift for the woman in your life who has everything, chances are she doesn't have this much great music all in one place...
Where's Joni?.......2001-03-06
If Amazon had a half-star system, I would have given this (otherwise) fantastic collection a four and a half. Missing Joni is not enough to cost it a star, just half.
But rather bewildering, considering Joni being one of the most influential women in rock, and considering Rhino's access to her Reprise and Asylum catalogs.
But really, this is one hell of a box set. Just the first two discs alone are worth the trouble.
Give us our due!.......2001-02-12
What a fabulous collection! Some others may feel that there were some glaring omissions from this collection, but I think it's perfect the way it is. I love that a lot of lesser-known artists were included. I'm tired of sets that are totally predictable and love having my musical horizons expanded. That's the best way to explore unfamiliar names without buying a whole disc you may not like. I also like that each disc has a theme so I can hear what I am in the mood for at the time. Best of all, it's not geared to only one genre. I try to be open-minded and give all music styles a chance and this allows me to do just that. Buy this for yourself, or another music-lover, you will not be disappointed!
It just keeps getting better and better.......2000-01-08
When I received this for Christmas, I was overwhelmed to tears reading all the wonderful talent that I held in my hand. Rhino has once again outdone themselves, working extremely hard to represent a century of women who impacted and reflected the times in which they sang. The music is amazing, I continue to get goosebumps hearing many of the songs. Rhino execs admit that they weren't able to include everyone, and have graciously printed the names of hundreds of women who were musicians in the past century. The liner notes continue to match Rhino's top quality standards. What I appreciate most about this box set is that Rhino admits they chose not to include performers who buyers likely already have in their collection (Indigo Girls, the Mamas and the Papas, Madonna, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, ABBA, Helen Reddy, Karen Carpenter, etc.), but worked to expose listeners to undiscovered nuggets, while still satisfying the craving for well known treasures. I defy any 60s fan (any race, any gender) to listen to Disc 3 and not be overwhelmed with joy at the outpouring of passion, fun and love. This just rocks, plain and simple.

Customer Reviews:
Nice beginnings.......2007-06-28
What a wonderful collection! Classic songs and voices that one never gets tired of hearing. Hearing the collection was like going back in time and enjoying the memories of simplier and kinder times. Songs my parents loved and songs I remember as a child into my teens. This is one collection you won't mind leaving in the player to play again and again.
EXPENSIVE BUT GREAT COMPILATION OF FEMALE VOCALISTS!.......2006-12-11
When I came across this product, I was immediately drawn to the song selection which not only included popular classic songs but also rare 1970s gems like "Lotta Love," "Midnight at the Oasis," "Blue Bayou," "Midnight Blue" and "Chuck E.'s in Love" which is why I decided to purchase it. Except for about 2 tracks which were unknown to me but still enjoyed listening to like "So Long," and "Just One Look," this CD compilation is truly worth owning because it includes some of the greatest female vocalists of all time like Billie, Dinah, Ella, Peggy, Patsy, Petula, Bette, Dionne, Judy, Carly, Janis, Aretha, Gladys and so on. Listening to this double CD was pure joy because aside from the great song selection showing diverse singing styles of women, the recording / sound level of each song was perfect and consistently at its maximum level which would make any listener appreciate all over again the arrangements and timeless quality of each song. Some compilations usually suffer from inconsistent sound levels per song because some songs have louder recordings than the others. But not in this case. Each song moved beautifully and smoothly to the next. My only complaint about this double CD? Quite expensive! $45.99 is quite expensive! It is a double CD but the cost is equivalent to about 4 single CDs or 2 double CDs. I had to think twice before purchasing it because here in the Philippines, one dollar is equivalent to 50 pesos so this CD actually cost me P2,300.00 (this even excludes shipping!) when, comparatively, original double CDs here cost from only P500.00 to P900.00. Nevertheless, a true collector's item for music enthusiasts!
Worth the Wait.......2004-10-22
I had to wait 6 weeks for this double-CD, but it was more than worth it. I have never had a set of CDs jam packed with so many classics. I could rave about this album for a long time, how it's perfect to sing along to, how it contains some of the best songs by women ever, how it's worth more than it's price, or how these are two CDs that everyone can agree on listening to when you're travelling in a car.
I was searching for "Blue Bayou" when I found this album, and I felt like I had struck gold. That feeling has never waned; I love this album.
Best 2 CDs ever.......2004-06-19
This is my favourite 2 cds, I could listen to them over and over again. A must have for any good music collection.
