This teaming of Linda Ronstadt and Cajun folk traditionalist Ann Savoy, billing themselves as the Zozo Sisters, shows how wide is the musical range of bittersweetness. The harmonies and shared lead vocals offer a complementary contrast between Ronstadt's purity of tone and Savoy's more piquant expressiveness. The arrangements turn folk songs into art songs, drawing as much upon chamber strings as Cajun fiddle and accordion. There's an exquisite beauty to the vocals, but the real surprise is how well the album holds together, given a range of material that extends from Cajun songs in French patois to stellar material from Julie Miller ("I Can't Get Over You," with husband Buddy Miller on guitar) and Richard Thompson ("King of Bohemia," "Burns' Supper") to a disarming revival of the Left Banke's 1960s hit "Walk Away Renee." Among other highlights, "Go Away from My Window" provides a showcase for the upper register of Ronstadt's soprano, and Savoy's lead vocals on Bill Monroe's "The One I Love Is Gone" bring out the blues in bluegrass. --Don McLeese

2 out of 5 stars Five Stars for One Track .......2007-07-16

The song "Marie Mouri" was the only good track on the entire album. It has a lot of feeling and soul. Truly well done.

The rest of the album was flat, unimpressive, and way overproduced. Two really good singers overpowered by a bunch of musical(sic) prima-donnas.

5 out of 5 stars Adieu False Heart.......2007-05-10

This is an absolute masterpiece, expertly produced and arrainged.
Hauntingly beautiful folksy romance with alittle country twinge.
Linda Ronstadt continues to melt my heart with each new release and
she is certainly one of the finest female singers on the planet.
ann savoy sounds just like her and they share the lead and harmonies
half&half.Several of the songs are in french and that works well
for them, love it.Hear one of the most outstanding female lead vocal
preformances of the century so far on"Go away from my window" by
Linda. If you love sophisicated ADULT ROMANCE go ahead a take a chance.

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking..........2007-03-10

This album blew me away. The songs are simple and the singing is heartfelt. The vocal harmonies are perfection! I can't say enough good things about this album.

5 out of 5 stars Cajun Celtic Bluegrass.......2007-02-13

With uncomplicated beauty, Linda Ronstadt and Ann Savoy have given us an outstanding album of unusual music. Recorded at The Cypress House on Bayou Tesche in Parks, Louisiana, these songs could be described as Cajun Celtic Bluegrass. I love the toe-tapping Celtic bluegrass numbers mixed with Cajun ballads sung in French and the instrumental interludes consisting of dulcimers and resophonic violas. The harmonies are truly awesome. And these ladies give us a cover of Walk Away Renee that is stunningly beautiful. If you enjoying collecting rare flowers, this CD is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful album.......2007-02-06

Beautiful voices; beautiful songs. I listen to this album at home, at work, and in the car, and I bought the album for two friends.

5 out of 5 stars Frank Sinatra.......2007-08-07

What can you say about a CD by Frank that hasn't already been said! Got to love his music even though he is no longer here. His music is timeless!

5 out of 5 stars Romance, Sinatra-style........2007-07-29

What's there not to like about this album?
The Voice, the songs, the arrangements: SUPERB!
The cover?? Is this the best picture the good folks at Capitol/EMI could come up with for a "Romance" album?
Then again, you're not buying this for the cover.
The songs have all appeared before on various releases. Nevertheless, this a more-than-appealing package of 21 standards. Standouts??? Try all 21!

5 out of 5 stars Simply Awesome!.......2007-05-25

"The Voice" is simply at his best on this CD. You'll find some lesser known hits here like "At Love Last Love" that will become your favorites. I highly recommend this CD for anyone who appreciates a time when singers could sing and songs had melodies.

2 out of 5 stars From someone curious about Sinatra, not a die hard fan: it's OK.......2007-05-16

I have this artists in many infomercials, so I bought this CD to find more about him. Verdict: he sings well, but the songs are not of my taste. It's OK.

Sinatra. I need to ask you for forgivness. I used to think you and your kind of music are so outdated, dead and buried. Ever since I got into Buble's standards album, a whole new world was opened to me. Amazing, how the mind and heart work. I feel like I had been deaf to this music all those years.

This is a beautiful album, a feast for your ear, heart and soul. Don't miss this gem.

Chris Isaak managed to turn his videogenic visage and brooding masculinity to his advantage in a big way, becoming a sort of MTV-era cross between James Dean and Elvis. Heady stuff, but don't hate him because he's beautiful. In fact, Isaak had been plying his trademark latter-day rockabilly sound for some years before the inclusion of "Wicked Game" in the David Lynch film Wild at Heart jolted sales of Heart Shaped World. (But the stylish Herb Ritts video certainly didn't hurt, either.) Still, the album is a moody gem, featuring the pensive title track, the smoldering "Blue Spanish Sky," and, of course, "Wicked Game." If you still doubt Isaak's good intentions, though, check out the album's rockin' finale, a fine version of Bo Diddley's "Diddley Daddy." --Daniel Durchholz

This is a great CD. I listen to it all of the time every track is fun and well done. I would buy this again with no worries.

5 out of 5 stars Very good music with a vibe. .......2007-03-24

This guy's good!!! Alot of people might only know him for "Wicked Games" and would want to dismiss him as another pretty boy, but that would be a mistake.

There is much that is quite good and in the best tradition of the music that would be in a direct line to those who initially mixed their country influences with rock and roll, in the best possible way.

Instrumentally this album shows how you accompany a vocal well, convey a good vibe. The arrangments for this type of music are perfectly done. While a produced album, it has a working unit live feel to do this. It's more than well produced, it's excellently produced. No technical wizardry that would intrude on the pieces.

There is romance, wistfulness and a hint of the the mythical rock & roll imagery. The mixing of influences country/pop/rockabilly/smooth jazz is seamless.

Heart Shaped World
I'm Not Waiting
Don't Make Me Dream About You
Kings Of The Highway
Wicked Game
Blue Spanish Sky

Are all true high points on. Of those, my personal favorites are "Kings of the Highway", "Don't Make Me Dream About You" and "Blue Spanish Sky" are personal favorites.

A very well done recording.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Pop.......2006-08-20

This is a perfect pop album, something that is extremely rare and to be treasured when discovered. There isn't a weak track on it, and almost every song is an evocative and well crafted gem. Age has not dulled any of its charms. If you're a fan of well crafted pop, this is a must have. I completely recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Really unique in the musical world.......2006-05-25

Most folks compare Chris Isaak to Roy Orbison and/or Elvis P., but Mr. Isaak's music as shown in this CD is so much more than that. All of the songs on this CD defy comparison to other songs, and to dismiss them as "rockabilly" or just a Roy Orbison imitation is very superficial. The songwriting and arrangements are really so very good, with the echoey guitars creating the perfect mood. The songs even sound different than most anything else recorded. Compare the guitars and backgrounds in "Wrong to Love You" with just about anything else you have ever listened to, and you will see what I mean. The guitar work in "Forever Young" also sounds just too crisp, too effective, too perfect to be real. It is truly unfortunate that whatever was done on this CD was not repeated in later efforts, because this CD will be listened to 100 years from now. It is hard for me to give 5 star ratings to anything, but no kidding...if you like this kind of music, this is a 5, hands down.

5 out of 5 stars Chris Isaak rocks!.......2006-05-19

This is one of my favorite albums. Chris Isaak's seductive vocals and bluesy/ rock n roll sound is always a favorite. His influences range from Elvis to Roy Orbison and they are extremely evident in his vocal style, overall sound and sometimes cover choices. I love the slow, smoky, seductive ballads like "wicked game" from david lynch's wild at heart, "blue spanish sky", "don't make me dream about you" and "heart shaped world" I also love the animalistic and deeply intense "in the heat of the jungle" and the slow burn of "King's of the highway". Isaak's cover of "diddley daddy" also rocks. a 5 star winner. everybody should own this album. it is one of my favorites.

It's not opera; it's not a pop concert; it's not Broadway. It's all of these and none of them. Once you accept the fact that this sequel to the original blockbuster concert recording is less about music and more about entertainment and the power of musical personalities, you can appreciate what you're hearing as an event--phenomenal and bizarre, momentous and frivolous. This is an occasion to celebrate the voices and egos of three huge superstars, and to have fun listening as Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, and Jose Carreras interact, bouncing lines off each other and playing to the overwhelmingly enthusiastic audience. Much of the fun and flavor of the concert is dependent on seeing the action, though, and without the visuals you notice flaws in the singing much more. Domingo comes off as the more solid performer, and his voice is in far better shape than the other two. But if you crave big, high, and loud--and you don't take your opera too seriously--you'll love this disc. --David Vernier

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Un gran concierto.......2005-07-19

3 out of 5 stars Give em a 3.5.......2004-01-25

The Three Tenors has/have become a cottage industry, churning out one CD after another for every imaginable event and in every combination. This does not mean that the results are necessarily inferior but it does imply a commercial, layman's approach. And maybe this is better - spreading the joys of fine music to the masses. After all, where besides figure skating and cartoons do most people have a chance to even hear opera?

This event, like the first one in Rome, has a magnificent setting but, like Rome, the show was marketed mainly to the American audience. They still include the dreadful "Maria" with the hilarious pronunciation and even added "With a Song In My Heart" (or, as Carreras is wont to sing, "Weeth a Soeeng een My Haht"). Though some may deride the choice of encores, they were almost perfect. The Three Tenors, despite their prior celebrity, are creations of our culture of entertainment in ways that Caruso could only dream about.

Synopsis: Carreras stands out, Domingo substitutes volume for quality and Pavarotti soars when he doesn't have to.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Enjoyable Evening IN !!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-05-01

I am not a regular Opera fan, hoever these THREE are the Best. their songs they sing together are SUPER!!! And the range of NOTES REACHED ARE REMARKABLE. tHE MIXTURE of songs is a treat for all, even if you are not an OPERA FAN!!!! Great show!!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Hmmmm...........2002-04-21

Not what I thought it was going to be. I like only about 4 of the 20+ tracks on this CD. I shoudl have just bought the DVD instead and actually watched them perform. Much, much more entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Last Encore of songs missing off C.D........2002-02-06

The Three Tenors are my absolute favourite singers. The 1994 Concert was undoubtedly their best in my view. I taped this live concert from the television, and have played and played and played it!! I also taped it on a cassette, however, when I bought the C.D. I was really disappointed that they did not include the last set of encore songs, which included O Sole a Mio (don't know if I've spelt that correctly), where Placido and Jose try and outdo Luciano!! It received such a fantastic reception from the crowd, (one of the many standing ovations), and really showed how much the Three Tenors seemed to enjoy performing the concert. How come this was not included? I don't know if it was on the Video because I play my own.

Many thanks for your time,

With kind regards,
Pam Sargeant.

3 out of 5 stars For Eric Carmen fans only.......2007-08-01

After producing four stellar albums of rockin' power pop with the Raspberries, Eric Carmen decided to go solo in 1975, releasing the album ERIC CARMEN. Easily his best work, it contained three top 40 hits, but also contained some warning signs of things to come. The long, middle section of "All By Myself" and the show tune-esque "Great Expectations" saw Carmen straying farther away from his rock n' roll past and closer to the middle of the road.

The two albums on this CD were relased in 1977 and 1978 as his second and third solo records. BOATS AGAINST THE CURRENT leans heavy on the ballads, but is also a good showcase of Eric's fine piano playing. Burton Cummings of the Guess Who actually guests on a few tracks, most prominently "Marathon Man." Eric plays a variety of instruments, including drums on at least one track. The lone rocker, "Take it Or Leave It" is decent, but sounds oddly out of place amongst all the mellower material.

Although CHANGE OF HEART does contain a couple of ballads, it's much more of an upbeat record. The production is dated, but it was 1978, so certain songs have a disco feel, especially his cover of the Four Tops' "Baby I Need Your Lovin". "End of the World" and "Haven't We Come a Long Way" are good album cuts. Strangely, several of the tracks were actually leftover from the BOATS sessions, including one of the best songs on the record, "Someday" which was originally the b-side of "She Did It" from BOATS.

If you're a big fan of Carmen's work, it will be great to finally get these songs on CD. But, if you're just a casual fan, seek out ERIC CARMEN THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION, which gives an excellent overview of his career, including early cuts from the Raspberries and Eric's later hit from Dirty Dancing.

5 out of 5 stars American Beat lets keep them coming!!.......2007-07-23

It is really great to get these two Eric Carmen releases on a single cd. I have always been a big fan of Eric Carmen. There are a few Greatest hits cd releases available but his solo stuff is very rare. There are a couple of hits here but the other songs are great as well. I hope American Beat will continue to dig into the vaults for more of Eric's solo work.

4 out of 5 stars Eric's 2nd and 3rd Solo Effort's Released.......2007-07-20

If you were an Eric Carmen fan, you probably enjoyed his 1977 lp, "Boats Against the Current", and his 1978 release, "Change of Heart". Both are decent albums but certainly not up to the standard of his 1976 lp, "ERIC CARMEN", featuring the classic hits, "All By Myself" and "Never Gonna Fall in Love Again". The medium hit, "Sunrise" was also on that album.
A new CD company to me, AMERICAN BEAT, has released Eric's second and third albums on one disc. Both these albums had one respectable hit (each). "SHE DID IT" from "Boats" and "CHANGE OF HEART" from the Same titled album. "Boats Against the Current" was a tiny hit around the end of 1977.
To my knowledge, these albums have not been released before in the U.S. (I know you could buy expensive Japanese imports years ago, but at 35 minutes per lp, that was robbery!) The CD quality is decent, but not extraordinary.
The music is pleasant but not Eric's best. However, for the price and the scarcity of these records, I'd recommend this purchase if you are a fan of Carmen or even a seventies easy-listening fan. If you are satisfied with the big hits, I'd recommend one of Eric's compilations. He had one out on ARISTA five or six years ago which even included several of his hits with the Raspberries. That compilation is excellent!! The best songs from this two-fer CD are on the best of compilation. I give this a four star rating for the price and the availability of two long since forgotten albums of the late 70's. I hope to see some more rare re-issues!!!

After three albums where each was an improvement on the former, indie-cabaret darlings Devotchka continue to move forward. Capturing all the drama inherent in Eastern European folk styles and pairing it with the more dramatic end of indie rock (think Arcade Fire or Calexico), Devotchka carve out a rich little niche for itself. The band tips its glass to a number of influences on this six-song E.P - along with the original title track, the band offers up covers that range from Siouxsie And The Banshees' "The Last Beat Of My Heart" to the Velvet Underground's "Venus And Furs" to the Sinatra tune "Something Stupid." Regardless of the source material, the band wholly remakes each tune, skillfully playing a mariachi band on "El Zopilote Mojado" or the moody troubadour on the title song. It all fits together like a jigsaw puzzle with no pieces missing, proving that this band's interpretive skills are just as strong as its compositional ones. -- Tad Hendrickson

Friends of mine have been into DeVotcha for a long time, but I never got into them until recently. I had seen Little Miss Sunshine about 4 times before I looked up the soundtrack and realized DeVotchka was responsible for a good portion of it. Investigating further, I heard "I Cried Like a Silly Boy". I was instantly hooked, downloaded all their cds from Ruckus and have been sold ever sense. It's a good band to fall completely in love with annd they have a great combination of sounds (not wholly original but borrowing beautifully). Enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Too short yet so delicious..........2007-06-05

... like one of these miniature French pastries: one superb bite that keeps you asking for more. So, take your time to savour it.
Perfect following to How it Ends, Curse Your Little Heart is a fun, eclectic mix of very different songs and styles the band makes their own perfectly. My favorite "reprise" is definitely Venus in Furs, with a quite intoxicating beat and gorgeous string arrangements. It mixes the punk music undertones of the original song with the band's own sounds.
I find the voice of lead singer Nick Urata quite improved over the previous album, more in control. As some said before me, it is not perfect, but I think that's what's seductive about it.
As different and somewhat strange the music of Devotchka might sound to some, once you get acquainted with their work, it becomes quite addictive. It has become one of my favorite bands, probably because of the scope of their influences and talents.
Check Una Volta as well (and the inevitable How it Ends, of course, if you don't own it already) for their early work.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, eclectic, innovative, energizing.......2007-01-09

This music is such a departure from mainstream, or from anything I've heard yet (though I'm no expert). Each song is a slightly different mix of rock, russian folk, burlesque, bluegrass, and some other things I can't name, possibly because it's just so... different. Yet every song seems to communicate directly with my body. I love this album, as well as the rest of their music, especially the album How it Ends.

4 out of 5 stars Curses!.......2006-12-17

Gypsy-Spanish indie-rockers DeVotchKa have gotten better with each album they produced, ranging from rough-hewn ethnic music to a sweeping, smoother sound.

And the EP "Curse Your Little Heart" is very much in the vein of their last album musically, though the songs are mostly someone else's -- Sinatra, Velvet Underground, Sousxie, with one lone song they made themselves. It's a fun, polished little offering that should keep fans satisfied until their next album.

It opens with the swooning fiddle and peppy tune of "I Cried Like A Silly Boy," which sounds like a song that should be sung under ivy-twined balconies. "You wrote me letters I didn't read/I know I didn't, you know I didn't/still I caressed you, sang you to sleep," Nick Urata croons in his mellow voice, as the fiddle twists around.

Then they merrily ratatat into the sinuous, sensual melody of "Curse Your Little Heart," followed by the dramatic guitar folkpop of "Last Beat of My Heart," which could have been a B-side from their last album "How It Ends." It has the same melancholy, expansive sound. A rather tongue-in-cheek version of "Somethin' Stupid" -- seriously, imagine Sinatra as a gypsy -- followed by the hard, dark, haunted sound of "Venus in Furs," and finishing up with mad mariachi tune "El Zopilote Mojado."

DeVotchKa is one of those bands that you listen to once, and who manage to stick themselves in your brain after that. Their lively mix of traditional Eastern European and Spanish music with the indierock vibe is getting better with time, and this time around they seem to be having fun with some odder choices. (Seriously, Sinatra?)

Urata and Tom Hagerman take the front with lots of trumpet and brassy Sousaphone, powerful guitar and a flexible violin that can twist itself around the other instruments, such as the exquisite, sweeping intro to the third song. And Shawn King plays some really wicked drums on the second song.

And at the heart of it is Urata's soulful voice, which isn't perfect, but that really erupts with power and emotion. He also tries out different vocalizations here: a slightly stuffy nightclub sound, a concerned lover, a more nasal Lou-Reedish sound, and the usual heartfelt wails.

"Curse Your Little Heart" is another winner for DeVotchKa, a colourful little EP that tries out various sounds for size. And most of them even fit, too.

5 out of 5 stars Short, and cheaper than a whole CD :-).......2006-10-25

I didn't know at first if I wanted to buy an album of mostly covers, but I've listened to this as much as the other DeVotchKa I have. They make the songs their own, in their unique style, and Nick's voice is as passionate and versatile as ever. The Last Beat of My Heart is just gorgeous. I can never listen to it loud enough. If you like How It Ends and Little Miss Sunshine, you'll like this as well.

5 out of 5 stars with a song in my heart/pal joey sound tracks.......2007-03-31

I actually was so pleased to see a CD available because I have been longing for the movie "with a song in my heart" to become available on VHS and then on DVD, and it never has, so now at least I can enjoy the songs from the movie. The cast track from Pal Joey was just an added bonus.

5 out of 5 stars With A Song In My Heart CD.......2007-03-19

I saw the film, "With A Song In My Heart" when I was twelve or thirteen years old and have wanted the sound track for many years. As an impressionable teenager in the 1950s, I have collected over time many of the films from that time on VHS or DVD, to satisfy my memories of the period. I regret that this particular film is not available on VHS or DVD, but, this CD is the next best choice. It is really enjoyable to hear the richness and depth of the voice of Jane Froman, who was one of the best singers of the time. I can still recall many scenes from the film and this CD revives the memories so well.

4 out of 5 stars A Jane Froman double feature........2006-09-16

This DRG CD pairs two recordings starring Jane Froman.

WITH A SONG IN MY HEART

Susan Hayward played Jane Froman in the film but Froman herself dubbed the vocals. This album of songs was originally issued as a 10" Lp. None of the tracks are taken from the film: They are all studio re-recordings. Later, Capitol re-released it as a 12" LP with two extra songs added. It is that expanded [program included here. Froman is in great voice, though the orchestrations are overly lush and string heavy. Still, the songs include such standards as "It's a Good Day", "Get Happy", and "Embraceable You" making for an enjoyable mini-concert.

PAL JOEY

Capitol's cast album of the 1952 revival has long been a collector's item. The original Lp was deleted in 1960 and did not resurface until Broadway Angel released it on CD (briefly) in 1993. As the stars of the revival Harold Lang and Vivienne Segal had already made a studio cast album for Columbia - an album that helped inspire the revival - they were unable to re-record their songs for Capitol, and the label turned to Jane Froman and Dick beavers to fill in. The revised orchestrations sound dated now, but here is a chance to hear Elaine Stritch singing "Zip" and to enjoy the lusty voice of Helen Gallagher early in her career.

In the end it's the WITH A SONG IN MY HEART selections (making their debut on CD here) that make this CD worthwhile. For PAL JOEY the studio recording (available from SONY) is preferable, however if one is so inclined you can assemble your own cast album of the '52 revival by combining tracks from both releases.

4 out of 5 stars "Pal Joey's" Pal.......2006-07-30

While the legubrious and over-orchestrated songs from the film "With a Song in My Heart" are typical of their era (and Jane Froman's stilted renditions are what once stood for emoting) the "Pal Joey" cast recording is an absolute delight. The orchestrations are bouncy and jazzy in a way that has long been forgotten, and the performances (except for the aforementioned Ms. Froman, whose Vulgnarian renditions are at times quite disconcerting, and who hits the sonic notes like lazer beems but misses the emotional ones by a country mile) are exceptional. Helen Gallagher deserved her Tony from the evidence of this recording, with Elaine Stritch not far behind her. But the overall impact surpasses any recording of "Joey" including the historic one that lead to this revival. There's energy, intensity and a whole lot of fantastic song writing (leave it to to Rogers and Hart) to satisfy any musical theater fan. A must have for anyone who loves "Old Broadway."

4 out of 5 stars another great twofer from DRG.......2004-01-21

Jane Froman was one of the top vocalists of her era. Froman's greatness is celebrated in this new 2-on-1 album, which comprises the film soundtrack of WITH A SONG IN MY HEART as well as the 1952 Broadway revival cast album of PAL JOEY.

WITH A SONG IN MY HEART was the life story of Jane Froman, with the lovely Susan Hayward in the lead role. Froman herself supplied the singing for the film. Numbers include "It's a Good Day", the bittersweet and humorous "They're Either Too Young or Too Old", "Blue Moon", "Get Happy", "Tea for Two" and "I'm Thru with Love".

The 1952 Broadway revival of PAL JOEY was the result of the huge success of a studio album released by Columbia the year before (which featured Vivienne Segal reprising her original role of Vera and Harold Lang as Joey). Segal and Lang headlined the new revival with Helen Gallagher (SWEET CHARITY, HAZEL FLAGG) as Gladys Bumps and Elaine Stritch (ON YOUR TOES, GOLDILOCKS) as reporter Melba Snyder.

Having already recorded their roles for the Columbia album, Segal and Lang saw little need in re-recording them for the revival album on the Capitol label. Instead, the roles of Vera and Joey were covered by Jane Froman and Dick Beavers.

The cast album suffers on many levels. First, the absence of Segal and Lang is quite distracting, and secondly the new Overture can't even compare with the scintillanting original.

The Columbia studio album is the version to buy in addition to this, though both albums have their strong and weak points. As per usual, Elaine Stritch brings her impressive and formidable comic timing to the fore in the show-stopping "Zip", and Helen Gallagher's silvery voice is perfect for "That Terrific Rainbow".

A fine addition to your collection. [DRG 19054]

When I purchased this CD, I really wasn't expecting much. Before buying this CD, I had never heard any of their songs, and even moreso, have never even heard of the band. I purchased the CD expecting to hear another Fall Out Boy wannabe band, but I was pleasantly surprised. The Slow, Melodic tunes actually are very cheery and the songs are very well arranged. My favorite would be 'Tired and Uninspired'

    4 out of 5 stars Better than i expected........2007-07-15

I really, really dig this new album from my american heart... although after AP magazine absolutly ripped it in there review i was kinda skeptic, but i bought it anyways cause ive been a fan of the band for some time and i have to say i was pleasanlty surprised to find how good this album is! However i found it is quite a bit slower than the first album, but the blues undertones "which i love" are what does it for me... and you can also tell its the same band, no drastic changing "which is also a good thing"... if you liked the first album then youll like this one as well... its not gonna change the world but its one of those cds that just makes u feel good! go pick it up and youll see for yourself! its well worth the money.

While countless fans flock to see soprano Renee Fleming's performances of the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro because she's got the voice and the dramatic ability to handle such meaty roles, the versatile singer throws her fans a curveball on Haunted Heart, singing popular standards and ballads as well as a few altered classical pieces. In her liner notes, Fleming calls this album a "look back at the road not taken" -- she played a weekly gig in a jazz club while in school. Nonetheless, her feel for the material here is undeniable. Interestingly, she drops her voice a full octave from her usual tessitura, and the change reveals a robust gospel-oriented approach filled with dramatic breaths and moans. The lyrical Fred Hersch (piano) and the idiosyncratic Bill Frisell (guitar) provide support, and both are adventurous jazz players who create subtle and uniquely haunting backdrops. It adds up to an interesting cross-section of ideas well carried off by the generous talents of all involved. --Tad Hendrickson

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Sublime and ridiculous.......2007-06-13

The sublime: much of the artistry of this recording is about sound, and the subtle blending/responding of voice with guitar sounds and / or piano sounds. It is in the sensitive musical interplay between the artists where this effort shines. Definitely not recommended for road trips!

The ridiculous: Fleming ended the majority of most phrases in most of the songs with a guttural of some sort which for me becomes irritating to the point of distraction. These punctuations are mostly quite awful: really tasteless, clumsy, and overused big time and I'm amazed at how this ever got released. Without these ersatz testifyin' noises this CD would be stunning.

So, if you have the ability and inclination to edit out this garbage from your perception as you listen I think you'll be glad you experienced these artists at work together. (Unfortunately I'm not up to it).

    2 out of 5 stars Eeeeeeeeeeewwwwwww.......2007-06-06

Ugh. Like a manufactured home vs. a stick-built house, Fleming's manufactured (aka "training and technique") blues voice compares unfavorably to other jazz/blues singers/lounge acts. Would not, COULD not, listen to this recording straight through--one big long, breathy, minor key train wreck in the making. Took the CD on a road trip and had to pull over and remove from queue--either that or drive into a wall.

3 out of 5 stars Better than I thought it would be.......2007-04-10

I have to admit, Haunted Heart was a lot better than I thought it would be,especially her recordings of "River", "The Moon's a Harsh Mistress, "My Cherie Amour" and "In my life".
I think this is the most artistically successful recording of Pop/Jazz by a classical singer. I enjoyed it even better than the Anna Sophie Von Otter'/ Elvis Costello CD.
The perspective I am coming from is that of a classical singer who started out as a pop singer/songwriter. I perform and teach cross-genre but love a world class instrument such as Flemming's
I wanted to get the perspective of a friend who used to sing jingles and is also a trained singer but is usually critical of any attempts that opera singers make at crossing -over.
My friend is very familiar with Flemming's voice, but did not recognise it in this context when I played the CD for her. Her reaction was very complimentary, although she did comment that the diction was a bit strange.
She then played it for her brother a well known jazz singer and arranger who had a somewhat negative reaction. He found the singing to be overly dark and round. He prefers a cleaner more 'spoken' approach to this style of singing. I understand this perspective and therefore personally prefer Ella to Sarah as well, but let's not get too picky. Obviously, Rene Flemming is of the Sarah Vaghan School of jazz singing, which is not too shabby.

I will continue to enjoy this CD and will wait for another opera diva to top this one. But, somehow I think the next really good CD of Pop/ jazz from an opera star will also come from Rene.

To those who have been unreasonably mean and negative towards her, I can only say you are not fit to polish her shoes!

    5 out of 5 stars Brava Renee.......2007-04-09

This talented woman can sing anything. I really enjoyed this cd with the lights turned down and a glass of wine to relax after a very stressful day at work. Renee could definitely have another singing career outside of opera should she choose. Hearing her drop that gorgeous voice down one octave rivals the best chanteuses in the business - Cassandra Wilson, Nancy Wilson, Regina Belle, Sarah Vaughan, etc. This cd of different musical styles reminds me of Nina Simone and Cassandra Wilson, two great singers whom could interpret any song genre and make their versions special. I loved all the songs and the standouts here are "Haunted Heart", "River", "My One and Only Love", "My Cherie Amour", "Cancao do Amor", and Beatles "In My Life", and "Hard Times Come Again No More".
I hope Renee keeps recording whatever catches her fancy because I'll certainly always listen.

5 out of 5 stars Art is always new. .......2007-03-10

Renee Fleming is an artist bringing us something new, and beautiful. The poor will always be with us as manifest in those who resent other's movement from their established zones. Renee Fleming is a great female voice with accomplishments her detractors will never have, but in their dreams.

I welcome Renee's elan demonstrated with her recent recordings, Love sublime with Brad Mehldau, and Haunted Heart with Fred Hersch and Bill Frissell. Bravery, fun, and talent combined by artists and for people who are listening. Hearing long time favorites Mehldau, Hersch, and Frissell is all the more sublime.
