About the Artist
KELLY & KELLY is a family group based in Detroit, Michigan. The siblings are Ellis Kelly III, Andria Kelly, Tracey Kelly, and Rachel Kelly. Ellis III, one of the lead singers, has cerebral palsy. Once Ellis is on stage, one tends to forget that he has a disability. Ellis Jr. and Eva Kelly (parents) take part in the action also.
KELLY & KELLY began in November 1987 with Ellis III and Andria who were 10 and 11 years old, respectively. In 1991, Mr. and Mrs. Kelly saw the talent in their two younger daughters, Tracey and Rachel, and decided they too were capable of singing and playing the drums for the group. As always, Mr. and Mrs. Kelly supported the group, their children, in any way possible including playing the guitar and singing background vocals.
KELLY & KELLY continue to perform in concert at numerous churches, youth events, and banquets. Some events include the NAACP Award Banquet, the Special Olympics, Bobby Jones Gospel, and the Detroit Inner City Games hosted by the national chairman of Inner City Games, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Since February 1996, KELLY & KELLY has performed the U.S. and Canadian National Anthems in multiple NBA arenas. It all began with the help of a good friend who invited them to sing for the Orlando Magic. In every city it is said to be the best rendition they have heard. "The intensity of the crowd after we sing is amazing!" says Ellis III. Their performances led to an article in the February 2001 edition of the magazine Courtside. They have also performed the anthems for the WNBA, CBA, IHL and various charity games including "Penny Hardaway's All-Star Charity Game" in Memphis, TN and "The Detroit Pistons Jam Session."
In 1997, KELLY & KELLY wrote, produced, and performed a song in tribute to the Detroit Pistons Grant Hill and the 1997 Stanley Cup winners, Detroit Red Wings. Both songs were set to video and televised on WDIV 4 "Sports Final Edition." Also, in 1998 they produced and performed a song in tribute to the WNBA Detroit Shock. And, in July 2001, they were commissioned to do a song in tribute to the Sacramento Kings Chris Webber.
"We've been blessed with these gifts," says Andria, "because of the prayers, of not only our parents, but our church leaders: Bishop Jesse & Dr. Gertrude Stacks (Shalom Temple Ministries) and our beloved church mother, Dr. Estella Boyd (Fellowship Prayer Band). We intend to make it our business to use our gifts to the glory of God."

Buy This CD!.......2007-07-13
If you are even browsing for a childrens/adult friendly CD with traditional songs about America, buy this CD. Almost every song brought back memories of myself in elementary school during the bicentennial. My 2, 4 and 6 years old all love it and ask to play it all the time. Be warned, however, after listening to it for 2 hours straight in the car, parents may tire of even the best songs.
Great.......2007-01-09
I bought 2 copies of this CD. One for our school and one for home. My children, (2 4 year olds and a 3 year old) just love listening to this in the car and they are now learning all the words to some great patriotic songs. Children relate very well to this music because it is young children singing rather than the typical adult choir. I would recommend this CD for any family with young children who want them to sing and be musically active!
Wonderful Traditional CD - A Must Have.......2005-09-30
This CD is wonderful. The songs are traditional versions of all the classic America sounds like This Land is Our Land. The kids that sing on the CD do a great job and the songs are easy to sing along with. My 10 yr old and 5 yr old beg to listen to it in the car and at home. The CD ends with the Pledge of Allegance which has taught my 5 yr old how to say it perfect. I highly recommend this CD for any house. I only wish it was split track.....it's not!
Love It!.......2002-12-01
This cd is wonderful. We have three generations that love this cd. The songs are great as well as the singing. Highly recommend it!

Columbia Records rushed this compilation of patriotic and inspirational favorites into production in the wake of the September 11, 2001, attacks. The title song is a new version by Celine Dion similar to the performance she gave on the Tribute to Heroes telethon, while John Mellencamp's "Peaceful World" is included in an alternate, acoustic treatment. Each listener may find his or her own favorites, but few will be left unmoved by a selection that also includes Bruce Springsteen's "Land of Hope and Dreams," Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge over Troubled Water," and renderings of "America the Beautiful," "This Land Is Your Land," and "Amazing Grace" by, respectively, Frank Sinatra, Pete Seeger, and Tramaine Hawkins. Bill Withers's "Lean on Me" closes the disc on a plainspoken note that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of rescuers and other Americans since the tragedies. A back-cover note promises that a "substantial portion of the proceeds received by Sony Music [Columbia's parent company] from sales of this album will be donated to the Twin Towers Fund." --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
Blown away............2007-03-06
I am not a Celine Dion fan normally, but stumbled onto this mix for many of the other titles on this CD. The brief download does not give her version of God Bless America justice. This arrangement builds slowly, eliciting "what the heck are you listening to?" comments and grows until anyone in listening range has goose bumps. I played it while stopped for hours on the freeway in front of Moore Park College where the long lines formed for Ronald Reagan's casket review and people on the side of the road actually gathered around the car and asked me to replay it. A must for any fan of patriotic music.
Uplifting!.......2005-06-20
This is a very nice patriotic CD with some great songs. My favorites are God Bless America, sung by Celine Dion. America The Beautful, sung by Frank Sinatra. This Land Is Your Land, sung by Peter Seeger. Peaceful World, sung by John Mellencamp. Blowin' In The Wind, sung by Bob Dylan. Bridge Oer Troubled Water, sung by Simon & Garfunkel. Good Bless The U.S.A, sung by Lee Greenwood. And The Star-Spangled Banner, sung by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The songs are all beautiful and uplifting!
A Good Americana Compilation.......2003-10-27
This compilation was made soon after the 9/11 in a wake of patriotic feelings among Americans. It comprises songs of different genres, from rock ballads ("Peaceful World" by John Mellencamp, "Lean on Me" by Bill Withers) to ballads ("Bridge over Troubled Water" by Simon&Garfunkel), to big Americana hits ("God Bless America" by Celine Dion, "America the Beautiful" by Frank Sinatra, "This Land Is Your Land" by Pete Seeger, "We Shall Overcome" by Mahalia Jackson) to the National Anthem "The Star Spangled Banner" by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, plus "Hero" by Mariah Carey, "There's a Hero" by Billy Gilman, and a few more.
This CD is a good compilation of songs that may lift the spirits of the nation, as well as some truly inspirational melodies. Performances by Tramaine Hawkins ("Amazing Grace"), Billy Gilman, Celine Dion, Simon&Garfunkel, Bill Withers are the gems of this CD. The same can be said about the National Anthem, though you might find some acappella version (by Lee Ann Rimes, for example) not less appealing.
Personally I bought this CD because of Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA". But this turned out to be the worst track. It is probably some remix. Almost nothing is left from the original version, neither its marching touch, nor the integrity that left your skin covered with goosebumps, inspired you and made you realise the true spirit of American patriotism. The version from this CD is more on the jazz, relaxed side, which is killing for such a song.
On the whole, this CD deserves your attention if you need a compilation of Americana music, or at least a flavour of it.
A great CD, powerful and moving.......2003-10-24
True to its title the music CD God Bless America is a masterful tribute to America. This collection of patriotic music includes many soul-stirring songs; I especially like the selections by Lee Greenwood, Frank Sinatra, and Bill Withers. All of the songs on this CD are powerful and will remind you how great this country truly is.
God Bless America is great for working, driving, or listening to all by itself. I guarantee that you will not regret purchasing this collection of American songs. This CD draws together an immense pool of talent and is extraordinarily successful at illustrating the greatest nation in the world.
Moving Patriotic tribute!!!.......2003-05-25
Well done! Loved Celine Dion's version of God Bless America in tribute for her adopted county. Pete Seeger's This land is your land is equally great. Has the beloved Lee Greenwood's God Bless the USA!

If you have a patriotic bone in your body, you'll find it hard not be stirred by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's God Bless America. This 69-minute collection offers 23 flag-waving standards, from "America the Beautiful" and "The Star Spangled Banner" to "Shenandoah" and "This Land Is Your Land." These 1970s recordings tend toward the bombastic, with backing by the Columbia Symphony Orchestra, Columbia Symphonic Band, and Philadelphia Orchestra, but they don't sound overly dated, and there's also an intimate a cappella version of "When I First Came to This Land." Richard P. Condie and Jerold D. Ottley conduct, and baritone Robert Merrill contributes two brief solos. Choral music aficionados might also enjoy the Mormons' 1991 recording, Songs from America's Heartland. --David Horiuchi

Send it back for remastering.......2007-05-04
This CD has a great selection of songs from a top-notch choir. Unfortunately the instruments are so loud that you can't hear the singing.
God Bless America - The Morman Tabernacle Choir.......2005-10-25
I am involved with several veteran/patriotic organizations and frequently have need of music of this nature. This CD is of the highest quality music of this type. I find it to be one of the best choices available for this usage. I would advise others in like situations to consider adding this CD to their resource materials.
Fantastic .......2005-10-04
Very well conducted, every song is sung with such enthusiasm and fullness. Every song is sung to its fullness and then some.
A SONIC ORGY.......2005-02-03
This CD can only be described as "a sonic orgy" or "a celebration of sound efects". I'm very disappointed at this compilation. A good example of this cacaphony (as one reviewer puts it) is "This land is your land". I have to stop this piece after the first 90 seconds, the orgy then takes effect. The choir, on the other hand, deserves high marks for the songs it seems to have sung countless times, like "Battle hymn of the republic" or "The Star-spangled banner". But, as I have said before, the habit they have of adding orchestras and brass choirs is a distraction from the singing. In that way, they may be typically American, where bigger seems to be the equivalent of better. I still love the art they displayed in the LP 'A Mighty Fortress". That is the choir at its very best.
Great but heavy on the sopranos.......2004-07-07
Beautiful patriotic music, but be warned that most of the tracks are heavy on the sopranos, which seems odd for songs such as Anchors Away and the Marine Corps Hymn.

Eeww!.......2006-06-19
This is like the music to one of those theme park Celebrate America type shows. The musical arrangements have that hokey, somewhat dated, overly sweet and enthusiatic feel I hate. I thought I was getting the standard versions of these songs but what I got was the cruise ship extravaganza, yuck!
this land is your land.......2006-04-17
to think that "this land is your land" is a patriotic song is laughable at best, however is a common misconception of the song. you'd think that the creators of this cd would research the songs they put on the cd a little more, and find that "this land is your land" is actually a protest song (original lyrics contained lyrics such as "on that sign there it said private property/but on the other side it didn't say nothing/that side was made for you and me", an obvious attack on capitalism".
America's Favorite Patriotic Songs.......2005-09-30
The title says it all.
Good old fashioned "goose bump" music.
Great Place to Start a Patriotic Music Collection.......2002-09-12
This choral collection features a majority of the best known and loved patriotic songs from our country's history. I'll admit I was a little leery of the choral part when I first picked it up, but I've found that, for the most part, it works really well.
It especially stands out on the acappella version of "My Country 'Tis of Thee." It's absolutely stunning. Other fun songs are "This Land is Your Land," which I really wasn't familiar with before I bought this, and a personal recent favorite song "God Bless the USA." I love having the "Armed Forces Medley" on here so I can learn these songs. And the instrumental arrangement on "Stars and Stripes Forever Medley" at the end has me taping my toes every time I hear it.
There are a couple missteps, however. I've heard better versions of "The Star Spangled Banner." I think one reason I'm disappointed with it is that they only include one verse. I love the other verses of our national anthem, and wished they'd included at least one more since they included multiple verses of all the other songs. Also, "If My People" and "God Save America," while find songs, just don't seem to fit here.
Overall, you can't go wrong with this collection. I'm just starting to look for patriotic music, and this has been a wonderful first CD.

Music we all need to hear once in a while........2007-01-04
This album is well put together and I enjoy the old standards. Music is an integral part of our heritage. Often when I listen to this album, I think about what our country has been through and how very, very important it is to appreciate what we have. I spent 3 years living in France in the 60's and I cannot tell you how much all Americans looked forward to going "Home!"
Enjoy!!
A very good CD.......2005-06-16
If you like a mix of songs and marches very well played, this CD is for you. The voices of the singers are good, the music support the lyrics and it is easy to listen or to sing along. Also, nearby half of the tunes are played by the Band of the Grenadier Guards and for me, this Band is the best band to play Sousa marches and military marches. The precision of the execution is perfect, the sound is lovely and the technical quality of the recording is perfect. When I listen Anchors Aweigh, I always hear the sound of the waves and it is one of the only bands that gives me this feeling. If you have just one CD of military music to buy, you may buy this one; it is a best buy.
Revision of history.......2005-03-27
As usual, "Dixie," "The Bonnie Blue Flag," and other songs of a Southern genre are conspicuously absent. Why not throw in a couple of rap tunes to make this album truly "American?"
Lovely CD--shameful misspelling on the song titles.......2002-11-22
I do not own this CD--though it appears it would be a wonderful album to listen to. I was compelled to write my review because of the misspelling of our national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner (as opposed to "The Star Bangled Banner" as it appears not once but twice on the song list). I do hope this error is corrected.
The Ultimate Patriotic Album.......2002-07-20
For all those patriots out there who want to listen to classical patriotic music, then get this album. This has a lot of tracks from yankee doodle march to the Washington post march. Even Amazing grace is here. The orchestras and the chorus here, gave there best performance ever.
Enjoy

The Irish Tenors' fourth album sees the trio of Anthony Kearns, Ronan Tynan, and Finbar Wright paying a sentimental musical tribute to Ellis Island, the hallowed landmark that met the majority of immigrants entering the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. Needless to say, the Tenors' repertoire this time around is full of reflective ballads of love, loss, and homesickness, including the original "Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears" that opens this disc. Throughout this studio recording, the Irish Tenors are in fine form and backed by a soft-hued orchestra that never interferes with their soaring vocals. Traditional tunes include "My Wild Irish Rose," "How Are Things in Glocca Mora," and, of course, "Danny Boy" (the last sung by all three tenors, with refreshingly simple solo piano accompaniment). Thankfully, the threesome didn't forget that the immigrants had fun, too, as evidenced by some lighthearted fare; "The Courtin' Medley" features the Tenors at their most upbeat and comical. Ellis Island is a moving aural portrait of the struggles and triumphs of the Irish émigrés and a must-have for fans of the threesome. Newcomers may enjoy the Tenors' debut disc even more, as the earlier live album is a slightly more upbeat and spirited affair. --Jason Verlinde

A glorious concert in a historic setting, with all involved in top notch form. Finbar finds a great old Johnny Cash number, Ronan sings a Glocka
Mora to end all, and Anthony Kearns sings murderously difficult versions
of Macushla and The Croppy Boy like an angel. And their Courtin' and Irish
Medleys, and their "Nation Once Again" trios are simply glorious glees.
With the benefit of a grand theme, this is perhaps the best, and best balanced, of all their programs.
Ellis Island song brings tears to my eyes.......2006-03-17
This magical album crosses oceans and centuries and puts me in touch with my Irish ancestry. The title song tells a story similar to my greatgrandmother's and even though I've heard it many times now, I still weep for her.
How Are Things In Glocca Morra?.......2004-04-16
Long a fan of Irish music, I have turned to a series of artists to satiate my appetite. Bing Crosby and John McCormick have been succeeded by the Irish Tenors.
This CD has a bit more of an Irish American theme as "Isle Of Hope, Isle Of Tears" and "God Bless America" illustrate. Interspersed among these tunes are traditional Irish tunes such as "Macushla" and "Croppy Boy", along with newer songs, such as "The Green Fields Of France" and "How are Things In Glocca Morra?"
The singing is excellent, the words understandable. I appreciate the inclusion the lyrics of the songs contained on the insert of the cover. These are songs you will want to learn, whose stories you will want to research. I have. Listen again and again!

The Best Historical CD Ever!.......2003-11-21
I think this is best CD since Live in Belfast! it also has 2 songs not included on the video! it's a unique album of how the immigration to Ellis Island and New York turned out. It also has songs of the war such as The Green Fields Of France (The Best One) or, the croppy boy. I would recommend this to anyone!

It seems pretty clear that Ronan Tynan has no intention of resting on his laurels. Despite a stunning string of world-dominating, top-selling releases as a member of the much-loved Irish Tenors--not to mention his accomplishments as a champion athlete, an M.D., and a memoirist (see his recently published Halfway Home: My Life 'til Now)--the singer has now released his debut solo effort on Sony Classical. No matter which member of the Irish Tenors happens to be your favorite, My Life Belongs to You is a treat, affording as it does a chance to bask in the deeply expressive, mellifluous voice of Tynan. He has chosen his selections well and is equally poised and tender in classics from Mario Lanza ("Because You're Mine," "I'll Walk with God"), Broadway, and sacred music. What's especially wonderful is the opportunity to hear Tynan's emotionally gripping vocalism from so many angles. The mixing by Frank McNamara gives a lovely old-time feeling to the orchestral playing--a bit like a treasured old sepia photograph. A bonus track of Irving Berlin's "God Bless America" is included. --Sarah Chin

He should have stayed with Irish music........2007-04-04
Ronan Tynon was my favorite of 'The Irish Tenors;' so I was excited when I saw this cd. But, it was a big disappointment. The singing is mechanical; there is no personality, no emotion. The 'bonus track,' an unaccompanied "God Bless America," serves only to accentuate the absence of feeling. He should have stayed with Irish music.
My Life Belongs to You.......2007-03-08
A real sleeper in the Ronan Tynan series. First rate.
Ronan Tynan.......2007-01-10
I assume this is a great cd, since we own 3 Ronan Tynan cd's. This however was a gift for a friend , bought specifically for the song "God Bless America." He did, however rave about it to us, so it must be terrific.
Ronan at his most Emotional.......2005-11-26
This cd "My Life Belongs to You" is Ronan at his greatest. Each song he sings shows the great emotion he has in his voice. Ronan can sing each one of these to me anytime. He has great clarity and emotion as he sings. Love the CD "My Life Belongs to You."
greatest living tenor.......2005-03-22
Ronan Tynan is an amazing vocalist, and an amazing man. I'd never heard of him until, in the 2001 World Series, he sang "God Bless America," at Yankee Stadium. From then on, my husband was hooked. He bought this album as soon as he heard of it, and his culture level, musically speaking, is usually -----. But this is the exception that proves every rule. "my Life Belongs to You," "You'll Never Walk Alone," and above all else "The Holy City," are faves of his. This is easily the best recording of "Holy City," still in print. Nelson Eddy did the original, but sadly, no recording of it is known to exist. if only, lord, if only ... but until then, this is a masterpiece. "Roses of Picardy," is a thousand times better than the jazzed-up version of it Frankie Layne did. who was he kidding? This is a slow, tender ballad, and Tynan brings it off with spectacular flair. There's none like him--and where would we put one if there was?

The Price Club.......2005-04-28
"I am here," said Leontyne Price when interviewed as she opened the new Metropolitan Opera with Samuel Barber's underrated ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, "and you will know that I am the best and will hear me. The color of my skin or the kink of my hair or the spread of my mouth has nothing to do with what you are listening to." Back in the 1960s Price was one of the greatest divas in all of opera, and it wasn't just her voice but her magnificent stage presence, combined with her social activism. All of the above come into play in this collection of secular songs and ditties, some of them traditional plantation chanties and others, art songs and a scattering of pop music. And some of them, like Gershwin's "Summertime," cross the ever-permeable boundaries between Broadway and classical. These recordings were made at different times in Price's career, and her voice, while always angelic, has different shadings and reaches a different range of timbre in each separate recording date, but there is no question that, as time goes by, she is able to impart a richness of life experience noticeably absent from some of her earlier work.
"Ave Maria" sounds heavenly no matter which way you slice it, and as for "I Wonder As I Wander," it brings tears to your eyes. If you have a heart that's beating you will be moved by this rendition. "Ein feste Burg" is pretty strong, but Price seems more comfortable with the traditional spirituals, though perhaps it is the slightly off-kilter sounds of the Ambrosian Singers (what a name) who back her up on many of these tracks, that detract slightly from the experience. Compare "Lead Kindly Light" for a clear sense of what constitutes authority vs. what is a wee bit overproduced. If you had this compilation, and perhaps one of Leontyne Price's Christmas albums, you could attain nirvana any time you wanted to, just flip a switch and close your eyes, let her lift you up on wings of song.
A living legend.......2005-03-10
Leontyne Price (still alive) and already passing into immortality amongst vocal artists, both classical and popular. Leontyne Price stands at the pinnacle of her classical art, but those who only know her work in La Forza del destino or the Verdi Requiem are in for a heart rending treat with this album where Leontyne Price goes home to her roots in Mississippi and gives an unabashed account of the classic spirituals she sang as a young woman. Like John Mc Cormacks rendering of Irish songs there is a personal longing and devotion expressed here that reveals a side of the artist not known in the bulk of their "classical" repetoire. A sense of going home like Citizen Kane's rosebud, or as Dorothy Gale observes at the end of the Wizard of Oz "everything I could ever have wanted was right in my own backyard "
not your daddy's old timey spiritual.......2004-06-23
Agreed this is a good cd for a beautiful voice, but this is not, repeat not, for someone who wants to hear that old-timey religious fervor that you think of when you've been to a Black Baptist hand-clapping, standing, swaying, and singing service.
Immaculate Vocals of Leontyne Price.......2003-12-31
IMMACULATE, SUPERB vocal range and style! There's no other words that can complement Miss Leontyne Price's vocal arrangements. Miss Price's voice is strong, and shrills very nicely to the instruments played on many songs listed on this double CD which is a joy to treasure; every song listed are songs I was raised to hearing and singing. Miss Price is the reason why many of these songs remain in popularity and presently used. Miss Leontyne Price has been incredible in many of her past performances. This is my fourth CD of Miss Price and I am glad to own this particular CD forever and ever. Many thanks to the executors who found this remarkable album and upgraded it to a CD format! **Angi**
Great Gospel Stuff.......2001-04-12
This is a great CD. The only problem I have with it is that on some of the selections there is a boy's choir screaming in the background, and this takes away (a bit) from her performance. That said, her best selections are those that are either unaccompanied or those where her voice is not buried. Songs that strike me are - His Name So Sweet, He's Got The Whole World, Were You There, I Wonder as I Wander, Lift Every Voice and Sing, and my all time favourite Summertime. Enough said.

Not the best........2005-03-02
I bought this CD with high hopes. I absolutely loved the first one, the one recorded live. This one was a disappointment though. The guys songs are good and their voices are in good form but it was missing something...feeling, I guess. The live concert version can make me cry and laugh it's so sung with feeling, but this is just singing. I just felt it lacked feeling. I guess that's why I was disappointed with it.
What a magnificent Heritage.......2005-01-22
I highly recommend this album to all fans of Irish music. This is the last album with Ronan as a memember and it is one of their best. Ronan's "I'll Take You Home Again Kathleen" is wonderful, so too is Finbarr's "South of the Border". The theme from the Titanic "My Heart Will Go On" is the best version since Celine Dione's. My favorite track is Anthony's "The West's Awake" . One point to note is that this group is one of the few out there who can perform live with an equally good recorded sound. Having listened to them at Meadowbrook NH the night of Ronan's farewell I can assure you that live or recorded they have a fantastic sound. I highly recommend this CD to all fans of Irish music.

A Review .......2004-10-30
I have never really been a fan of Traditional Irish Music and had never even HEARD of the Irish Tenors....That is until a friend of mine introduced me to the recording of "Live In Belfast" Instantly, I was hooked. I have become addicted to a lot of these songs. Especially the goofier ones they sing. like "Phil the Fluther" and "Courtin in the Kitchen" When Heritage was released I was estatic....As I had loved all the songs they had released before. Even though they recycled some of their songs. I loved the way they re recorded "Red Is The Rose" with Finbar in place of John and also "Fields Of Athenry" I Found this version to be better than the other one. I found it really bizare that they would sing "My Heart Will Go On" as that is not an Irish Song...Ireland was where the Titanic sank. but still. I really enjoyed listening to it. "South of the Boarder" and "Golden Jubilee" along with "Little Brigid Flynn" were quite entertainingly cute. I really enjoyed Anthony's "The West's Awake" and "The Parting Glass" and "The Harp That Once Through Tara's Halls" I would, too also love to see Anthony put out a solo album.
Heritage, The Irish Tenors.......2004-09-30
This is another delightful effort by Anthony, Finbar and Ronan.
My favorite songs were "Off to Philadephia" (Anthony) and "My Heart Will Go On" (Finbar). I didn't even mind the repetition of some songs heard on past CDs - but wondered about it, until I learned of the departure of Ronan Tynan. I am curious to see the kind of arrangements they have included on their new CD, due to come out later this year, which they made upon the return of John McDermott. John is a Canadian of Celtic descent, whose voice, though pleasant in a folksy way, does not seem to blend as well with Anthony and Finbar as did Ronan's trained vocals. I would be very pleased to see Anthony make a solo CD, including such ballads as (my all-time favorite) Bantry Bay and some of the wonderfully playful Irish ditties he sometimes performs at his solo concerts.
Tattered Tenors.......2004-08-20
When the Irish Tenors burst upon the public scene not too many years ago, they were heralded as a refreshing change in the sea of musical mediocrity. The original trio of McDermott, Kearns and Tynan thrilled us with their exuberance and vocal virtuosity and frankly, I miss that. (Please note: since I originally wrote this review the threesome has changed to McDermott, Kearns and Wright with Tynan having left the group).
As one of their latest efforts, "Heritage" is an "okay" album, but it certainly lacks the freshness and fun of the Irish Tenors' earlier efforts. Of course, there are notable exceptions such as Kearns' roguish "Off to Philadelphia", the sprightly "Golden Jubilee" and the beautiful "The West's Awake" solo by Kearns. Wright's "Little Brigid Flynn" is downright fun but his "South of the Border" is oddly out of place. With too many recycled songs and a little too little Anthony Kearns, I personally found "Heritage" to be the weakest effort in the generally stellar Irish Tenors' discography.

A true modern classic.......2007-01-18
The title track alone to Michael Cimino's film "The Deer Hunter" makes it a worthwhile purchase.
Truth be told, you're not getting too much more than that. The three significant guitar pieces on this album (composed by Stanley Myers) are the title theme, the Sarabande, and a reprise of the title music (in a slightly longer and fuller arrangement).
The Sarabande is lovely, and comparatively underrated, but it's just not quite in the same league as its companion.
The Russian Orthodox choral pieces, while also good, are recorded live and thus lack the careful intonation and clean sound of studio versions.
The folks songs "Katyusha" and "Troika" are performed energetically. They also have, for better or worse, all the shouting, stamping, clapping, whistling, and audience sing-along that goes with a good live performance.
Finally, "Struggling Ahead" and "Waiting His Turn" are short, comparatively minor variations on the theme music that underscore particular scenes, just as good film music is supposed to do.
Now, here's what the soundtrack album doesn't have that it SHOULD:
(A) Frankie Valli singing "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You." The boys in the bar horse around to this song.
(B) Bobby Bare singing "Drop Kick Me, Jesus, Through the Goalposts of Life." When the boys return to the bar after their hunting trip, they drunkenly sing this.
(C) Frederic Chopin's sixth nocturne for piano (Opus 15, Number 3), in g minor. John the bartender plays it (just the first section, actually) just as the movie shifts from Pennsylvania to Vietnam.
All three of these pieces are significant in establishing the movie's moods. (Just like the simple, hymnlike version "God, Bless America," which IS found here.) Why in the world they were omitted from the soundtrack album, I can't figure.
That said, this album is still absolutely worth it. The theme music, published under the title "Cavatina," has become classical guitarist John Williams's signature piece. ("Cavatina," in case you're wondering, is an Italian musical term meaning a sustained melody or simple song.) It's been recorded many, many times since by other admiring musicians (in arrangements good, bad, and horrible). I suspect music lovers will be falling in love with it a hundred years from now. I've found the piece on other albums, but to me the two soundtrack versions -- particularly the concluding reprise -- remain, all told, the best combination of arrangement and performance. (Williams has also arranged this piece for solo guitar. The soundtrack recording benefits from a gently subdued strings-and-woodwind orchestral backing.)
By the way, people have rightly wondered why Myers's score didn't win an Oscar when "The Deer Hunter" did so well otherwise at that year's Academy Awards. It may be because (as I understand it) Stanley Myers had actually composed the piece several years earlier, and had even used it in another movie, titled "The Walking Stick." It apparently just hadn't grabbed people's attention yet. So guitarist John Williams deserves major credit for recognizing and championing this beautiful composition until people finally sat up and listened.
what a truly haunting score.......2006-05-28
This motion picture had such an emotional impact on me when I saw it back in the early '80s that it left me totally drained, and I was never able to get the haunting guitar out of my head.
As far as the music goes on this CD, it wasn't the entire score I was in love with (& needed to hear again), but a yearning, instead, to hear John "Guitar" Williams' awesome guitar playing.
Unfortunately, you only get three numbers by this great guitarist, three. I still love what the man does, but it is hardly enough.
I guess I'll have to either keep playing the same three tunes over and over, or else buy some more CDs by him.
nocturne number 6.......2006-04-17
thank you all for identifying this gorgeous piece of music. it's truly magical. i can't believe how many people it has touched. again thank you.i've been looking for it for years.
Favorite song not on the soundtrack.......2005-12-09
The scene when they're in the bar, just before they leave for vietnam, there's an emotional piano instrumental. Its not on the soundtrack, so if you're looking for it, its by Frederic Chopin, called Nocturne Number 6, Opus 15-3, in g minor.
A Huge Disappointment for a wonderful movie score.......2005-02-15
All I can say is what a ripoff. I think this soundtrack runs less than 15 minutes--what a lost opportunity. Not only are the scores way too short--but the most two vital songs/socres--"I Love you Baby--not only at the tavern but also as part of the wedding festivals--and even more importantly, the score whose name I don't know--after the deer hunt and the most poignant moment in the films--the score in the tavern where a classical piece is played and all the boys go into the deepest moments of intimacy in the entire film--none of this is part of the sound track.
I love the film, looked forward to the soundtrack--and felt I (and others) were totally ripped off.
