1 out of 5 stars Why The Only Great Timmy Thomas Song Is Included in Mono version?..........2007-03-06

The only song this record is worth to get, TT's super 70s Hit "Why Can't We Live Together" is in Mono sound. It also includes an awful "Disco-remixed" version of the song. It is not worth the price!

5 out of 5 stars Synergy: A requirement for collective survival.......2007-01-09

Product was received in good time and condition. The basic question- Why can't we live together- continues to be food for thought for me and continues to sober me up.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Peter Brown..........2007-02-10

I bought this disc at a domestic price ($11.99) back in the late 1990's. I am a Peter Brown fan, but there's NO WAY I'd pay $50 bucks for it. Wait 'til the price drops!

The music of course, is magic! Peter Brown was in no way or measure a 'Disco' artist by any stretch in my opinion. He, like Chic, was R&B Dance, anyone listening to his rhythms could tell that! I still dance to his music today - I still have his music on cassette in my car. This is a good representation of his work!

I recommend this and give it five stars...but, wait 'til the price drops before investing in the CD! Five stars!!

5 out of 5 stars Super rare disco classic on cd for the very first time!!!!!!.......2004-12-26

The first time I heard Can't be love/do it to me anyway was on the TV show "Dance Fever". Anyone remember that show? It was more than 2 decades ago and I have been looking for it on cd ever since. This collection includes the 8 mins 12" version of Can't be love which was hard to find as a 12" single even back in the 80's. It also includes the 12" mix of Crank it up, Dance with me, Do ya wanna get funky with me and many more. This cd has been issue in UK recently and I got my copy from Amazon UK. For all you disco lovers out there, get this before it becomes out of print.

5 out of 5 stars Tight Collection.......2003-09-29

Peter Brown truly gets over-looked when you talk about Groove based Cats that could truly bring it.His Arrangements&The Vocals are on point."Dance With Me" was always a Smoking Jam.but there was so much more to Him being seen&heard as just a Disco based Artist or a One Hit WOnder.this Set Highlights His Talent&Depth. His Music has no limits.

5 out of 5 stars Nostalgia Trip.......2003-04-26

Peter Brown's music always sends me on a serious nostalgia trip. This is feel-good music at its best! The disco era was truly a magical time in the music world; those who shouted "disco [bad]" just didn't get it. There are songs on here that I forgot about until I heard them on the CD.

"Can't Be Love - Do It To Me Anyway" is one of those songs and listening to it is pure magic! It's synthesizer-rich melody is so hypnotic and intoxicating. "Crank It Up" is another forgotten melody that I used to love; I didn't know Peter Brown was responsible for this one. "Crank It Up" is not disco per se; the guitar work gives a somewhat hard edge rock flavor.

Of course, "Do You Wanna Get Funky..." is an old standard - the epitome of music from this bygone era and "Dance With Me" is a classic gem, an all-time favorite. I even like the remix even though I don't believe you can improve on perfection!

This and "Fantasy Love Affair" are must haves in any disco collection! You can't go wrong here!

4 out of 5 stars The Best Of Funky Disco !..........2002-10-04

Peter Brown's music was proof positive that any truly gifted musician, song writer, singer should not be judged based on his/her ethnic background;Music has no racial boundaries !Peter Brown was no gimmick or fad artist;he was the real deal !He was cool and hip for the time.

That said, this collection exemplifies what the "best" of R&B, Funk, and Disco sounded like during the mid to late 70's. Like R&B/ funk female artist Teena Marie, Brown's identity was shrouded in mystery for his debut lp release so as not to shock the public. I guess the music execs or marketing team thought their albums would not be taken seriously if the music was performed by white artists...Still, Brown had a hot streak with cuts like Do You Wanna Get Funky With Me ? and Dance With Me. I remember being 7 years old and seeing this man perform on the Merv Griffin Show and thinking (even at that early age)" this guy's got rhythm and soul !" Artist's such as Peter Brown, Teena Marie, Wild Cherry, and KC and the Sunshine Band gave disco, r&b a very positive and serious image !

This collection only highlights his early TK days. His later move into the 80's to the RCA/Columbia/Gypsy labels would yield 2 pop rock/dance oriented albums entitled Front to Back and Snap ! which are both out of print and have never been released on cd format. The first containing the club hit Baby Gets High and the latter with Zie Zie Won't Dance, Love Is Just A Game (Trivial Pursuit) and the 80's all time club favorite of mine They Only Come Out At Night(mixed by Madonna's former beau Jelly "Bean" Benitez). Ironically, Brown would later co-write Madonna's 1985 smash single Material Girl for her Like A Virgin album ! Hopefully, the record company will have enough sense to put out Brown's later out of print works as a second volume of favorites !...

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Disco Treasure.......2004-12-24

Listening to this album is like a trip down memory lane to the golden days of disco. The classic Spank is archetypical 1970s disco with bubbly rhythms, chanting chicks and gorgeous flourishes of saxophone.

Dance Across The Floor with its propulsive rhythms and extended instrumental break was one of the biggest chart and dancefloor hits but the album includes a number of infectious ditties. You Get Me Hot with its tight bass lines reminds me a bit of Chic, whilst Gimme Some is quite soulful with a catchy riff and playful vocals that stick in the mind.

Another soulful moment, Goin' Home For Love is a beautiful flowing ballad whilst Let Me Be Your Lover is a funky track with prominent female backing vocals. Get Happy is a type of anthem for the disco generation, a buoyant little ditty with an insistent beat and I Get Lifted is indeed an uplifting slice of soulful disco.

There are also the gentle ballads, like Without You and the Bacharach-David song They Long To Be (Close To You). Jimmy Bo Horne may have been a disco phenomenon but this enjoyable album reveals that he made some memorable music that has stood the test of time.

5 out of 5 stars is it in.......2002-03-11

this song is probably the best disco song ever made on this planet...

4 out of 5 stars Miami Grooves.......2001-07-28

A passel of KC & The Sunshine Band sounds from '75-'79, plus the driving dance classic "Spank." A number of sexually charged tracks and some 80's sounds are part of the set. This disc enjoys the benefits of the Miami sound of the late 70's but avoids the dreariness borne of overexposure that KC's radio hits suffered.

5 out of 5 stars You can't party without it.......2000-10-22

So many hits are forgotten along the years but this album is simply one of those classics which you will never get tired of listening, even if listened over and over and over....

5 out of 5 stars Too good to be forgotten.......2000-07-26

Jimmy Bo Horne's music is simply too good to be forgotten. This CD is essentially a KC and the Sunshine Band collection with a different vocalist. Harry Wayne Casey and his cohorts wrote, played on, and produced almost everything here, so if you like excellent '70s dance music you will enjoy this. "Dance Across the Floor" is one of the best songs I have ever heard; I can't understand why it wasn't a huge hit back in the day (and who's that familiar voice singing backup? I won't say his name, but his initials are...!) Other fun songs here are "Ask the Birds and the Bees," "Let Me Be Your Lover" (sampled by Stereo MC's for "Connected") and "I Wanna Go Home With You" and "Spank." Horne even manages to coax a listenable performance out of "Close To You." Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Raw groove.......1998-12-06

Timmy Thomas is ready to be rediscovered as a cult icon.

This CD showcases a raw groove, Thomas singing at least as well as Marvin Gaye, often accompanied by lounge bar style soul/R&B backing.

The excellent liner notes explain that Thomas has a more than respectable jazz training with some really famous stars of the 50s and 60s. Yet Thomas brings jazz cool to his own sould, R&B, funk and disco songs.

To set the scene remember Thoms had his own Miami bar - "Timmy's Lounge Bar" in the early 1970s. Early tracks express this perfectly with Thomas playing a lowery organ with drum machine.

The title track, "Why Cant we live together?", is an incredible hippie soul standard, melding Marvin Gaye and Martin Luther King. It is probably better known as the last track on Sade's first album "Diamond Life".

Although Thomas was a hit wonder the balance of the album is still very cool.

If the black urban funk of 70s black action films is for you then so is Timmy Thomas. This albums fit in perfectly with the sounds of "Shaft", Trouble Man", "Superfly", "Foxy Brown", "Cleopatra Jones" and more.

If this is all too long ago think of "Jackie Brown" and Bobby Womack's "Across 100th street" and go south to Miami, you've found Timmy Thomas.
