5 out of 5 stars Luminescence par Anggun.......2007-05-07

Monsieur D.

5 out of 5 stars Anggun outdid herself this time.......2007-01-30

Always known for her gorgeous looks and sultry smoky voice, Anggun arrived on the scene as an Exotic breath of fresh air. With Luminescence, she puts aside her foreign "Asian-appeal" and proves that she can transcend all barriers and genres. "Etre Une Femme" was a urban-flavored surprise and captured Anggun garnering an entirely new fan-base while staying true to her strong vocals and amazing R&B runs. "Cesse La Pluie" burst out as the memorable next single with it's beautiful piano arrangement and crunchy guitar riffs. Althroughout the album we find Anggun reaching a new zenith as the writing becomes more poetic and lyrical, the hooks are tighter and her voice is more polished and confident. The already superior album (Almost every song could be a single) was re-released in mid 2006 and offers new remixes and bonus tracks not included in the original version. "Garde Moi" a duet with David Halliday is a haunting and exquisite rock ballad, while "Juste Avant Toi" was a lighter yet no less melancholy triumph that ruled the summer of 06'. The remixed songs are excellent as well : Captivite is mashed-up with "Another Brick in the Wall" by Pink Floyd, "Etre Une Femme" is remixed to sound like something from out of Lata Mangeshkar's repetoire, and there are two techno mixes of the other two singles. This was truly one of the best French albums (or any album for that matter regardless of language) I have ever heard, and as Anggun's star ascends ever higher we are left to wonder what she could possibly do to top Luminescence.

    5 out of 5 stars Better impossible.......2007-05-23

Anggun finally reaches her perfect path with her album Luminiscence after playing around with different rythms like electropop (Chrysallis) and New Age (Snow on the Sahara). Luminiscence is the purest expression of what Anggun is and what she is made of: passion and tenderness. This album is definitely her best work ever. The most amazing tracks are the vibrant "Saviour" and hip-hop-ish "In your mind" which contains Arab sounds. "Human" makes you go back to the 70's while "Cover" made me cry several times reminding me of my homeland. There's no doubt that this album was conceived to seal Anggun's career with a golden mark, and she absolutely did it again.
But she also goes back in time to the beginnings of her career when she used to be a rock star with songs like "Devil in my Mind","Painted" and "Captivity". On the other hand, she makes us long for the lost love with songs like "Surrender" and "Breathe in Water",a powerful ballad which is perhaps the best song of the entire album.
If you're a fan of Anggun, you must have this album, if you're not, you'll become one after listening to it.

5 out of 5 stars Her best Album So Far - Lyrics and Music.......2007-03-13

Again, she made another beautiful album. But this one, shows her maturity in making songs. 'Breath in water' captured my attention ... she sang beautifully, and the rest are great songs and music. Looking forward to her next album!

    5 out of 5 stars beautifully haunting.......2007-03-09

As always, her voice is beautifully haunting. Her transition from French to English is unbelievably smooth, even if there is not a word for word translation. I know almost no French, but both versions of her albums are a must for any Anggun fan. Luminescence (French or English) are her best to date.

4 out of 5 stars Her Best So Far.......2006-12-04

In terms of organization, visualization, and execution, there can be no doubt that this is Anggun's best album thus far. That applies to both the English and French versions. One important factor about this effort is that it is also the best produced of her albums; one can sense that a variety of factors (not the least of which being the fact that she is simply older and wiser) are responsible for the greater focus.

At the end of the day it is still about the songs. This record has a fine mix of compositions: there's the dancefloor dominator ("In Your Mind"/"Juste être une femme,") the French influenced pop/rock ("Evil And Angel"/"Je suis libre") that just enough avoids sounding too much like the ubiquitous Jean-Jacques Goldman, heartfelt spiritual love songs ("Surrender"/"Sur les cendres") and my personal favorites, the rock/pop songs ("Painted," "Devil in My Mind," and "Human"). I like it when Anggun rocks out; she has a unique sassy capacity to sing with (and of) rebellion while still sounding classy and...well...French.

Anggun's voice, her strongest attribute, is also excellent here. Kudos to the production team for making sure this happened. Her lyrics, both in English and French, are also better, tighter, and in many cases profound and personal. "Surrender" is a truly captivating and moving song of love and spiritual release.

Overall a top-notch and professionally executed effort that pays attention to detail and makes sure that Anggun comes off looking as good as she deserves.

    Hint, Hint....South by Southwest awaits....!

3 out of 5 stars A Different Look For Anggun.......2006-11-06

I first got hooked on Anggun when I listened to her 'Secret of the Sea' on her album 'Snow on the Sahara'. I didn't even know who she was. But her voice was strong and unique and her lyrics were just beautiful. I purchased her CD and absolutely fell in love with it. It was peaceful and earthy yet profound...for me atleast. 'Luminescence' is...a bit different. It's a bit edgier and has a pop feel to it. The opening 'In Your Mind' is a nice song to dance to. I like the beat. My second favorite is 'Evil & Angel'. Love the guitar, love the lyrics. She's showing versatility, which is indicative of one's level of talent. I get the sense that she's still experimenting, and the product of that is great. I firmly believe Anggun will continue to demonstrate her innate talent, and thus there will be no hesitation on my part to spend my green on her future releases.

5 out of 5 stars Look no further, there is no better Anggun. She is one and only........2007-05-31

This album may please music lovers of variety of genres: pop, jazz, rock, and classics. All this is due to the incredible voice that moves through ups and downs flawlessly, shouts and whispers, stops and rains, involves and pushes aside, waves welcome and good bye. All these oppositions are in one voice, the voice of Anggun. Incredible highs and mellow lows are a short description of the pleasing experience of listening to the CD.

The music is the blend of pop-rock and ethnic melodies. Such songs as "Snow On The Sahara", "By The Moon", "Life On Mars" became the international hits. They are catchy with well-memorable tunes. Once you hear them you will always recognize the songs no matter where you hear them the next time. And, this is true to the Anggun's overall performance. She is really recognizable!

The voice is beautifully surrounded and promoted by the music arrangements. The band supports the singer perfectly. The instruments are loud but never over the voice. The voice always stays in front and clear. The sound engineering is good, thanks to Sony.

The album is a great effort by Anggun. I personally consider the album as the best in Anggun's discography and recommend it to any music fan. Start your incredible music journey today!

4 out of 5 stars Very special music.......2007-01-05

Angunn has a singular voice. Her musics are amazing both in English and French.

4 out of 5 stars Indonesian Siren Stirs The Soul.......2006-01-25

Anggun isn't just another beautiful woman promoted by a record company solely based on her looks. Yes, she is incredibly attractive but there's also a voice to complete the package.

Her exotic Indonesian looks are well complimented by a smooth, husky and seductive voice that strongly reminds me of a young Annie Lennox. A comparison especially evident in track 1 - Snow On The Sahara - and track 7 - Selamanya -.

Definitely a strong debut album/CD, proving you can be both beautiful and talented at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars Miraculous music from the wonderful Anggun.......2005-10-19

If you don't believe snow could fall on the Sahara, it means you haven't listened to this cd yet! Anggun, who has one of the most incredible voices in the world, really does make you believe anything's possible - her music can bring so much hope, light and beauty into your life. All of her songs have an amazing feel to them - dreamy, bit oriental and...full of air and wind. I know it may sound abstract, but you'll certainly find out it's true, when you listen to Anggun's music. Take my word for it. What's more, this album features one of the best songs in the pop music history - "Snow on the Sahara" - an ultimate anthem of hope and wisdom; if I were to choose the greatest song of 90's, that would be the one. Don't hestitate for a second and get one of the best cd's of the last decade, from one of the most inspiring and talented living artists.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums in the past 10 years.......2005-07-02

Anggun was one of Indonesia's superstars. When she left Indonesia in 1995, settled first in UK and eventually moved to France, no one ever imagined that there'd be someone from indonesia doing this AMAZING stuff. I'm very proud of her : a true talent from my homeland, singing in 3 different languages, and making such a phenomenal work. 'Snow' is a remarkable work; mixing beautiful world sounds and graceful new age music plus pop-rock influences. Seriously, you can hardly find music like this expecially in a full-commercial music industry nowadays.

    Now, the review:
'Snow on the Sahara' - one of the GREATEST songs ever. I listen to it every single day, and will listen to it forever in my life. 'If your hopes scatter like the dust across your track/ i'll be the moon that shines on your path...' 10/10

'Over their Walls' - energetic but not so special. the chorus parts should've been added some other lines. 7/10

'Breath of an Angel' - beautiful but somehow not so special to me, but this song is still good for me 8/10

'Rose in the Wind' - LOVE IT TO DEATH!. I love the emotion, the beauty and the harmony of this track. The lyrics describe myself. 10/10

'My Sensual Mind' - very sensual . 9/10
'Valparaiso' - a great pop rock track. 9/10
'Selamanya'- the most haunting track of the album. in english, it means 'Forever' 9/10
'By the Moon' - better than 'Breath...', very beautiful 10/10
'Dream of Me' - better than 'Over their Walls', i love it! 9.5/10
'Secret of the Sea' - another beautiful ballad. the simplicity of the tracks gives an enchanting sounds. 10/10
'Life on mars' - LOVE IT!!!!. a LITTLE bit better than Bowie's version. nice ending. 10/10

Anggun has released her NEWEST english song entitled 'Undress Me' (currently only released in italy, france, and indonesia). Her newest album 'LUMINESCENE' is currently available on AMAZON.COM (here!). ANGGUN, YOU GO, WOMAN!

4 out of 5 stars Open your heart..........2007-03-18

Although this may not be Anggun's best work (in fact, this is her most underrated and unknown one, I suppose), it is still good.
It's Anggun's dip into dance/electronica pop scene, which is still great and still shows Anggun's distinctiveness.
As it was made as a soundtrack, not as Anggun's album, I should credit this album as being one of the best soundtrack albums ever!

Here are 9 songs mostly written and produced by Danish songwriters/producers Jesper Winge Leisner and Niels Brinck. Also, 3 songs ("Open Your Heart", "The End of The Story" and "Pray") also feature Anggun's songwriting.

The transition between songs works really well, making the entire album sound very well-produced and coherent.
The variety of sounds isn't very apparent here. However, towards the end of the album, "I Wanna Hurt You" offers itself as a club anthem while "Naked Sleep" closes the album with its sweet, piano-accompanied ballad.

Indeed, Open Hearts kind of reminds me of Everything But The Girl's work and even Bjork's, but Anggun, nevertheless, still shines here and what counts is that this is a VERY ENJOYABLE album, that surely lends its light-hearted-ness to those hearts in love..

    Enjoy!

    4 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2005-11-09

Some varied styles, from just piano and voice, to EBTG style guitar and voice to some more highly produced hip hop beats behind pleasant hooky music. Does remind me of EBTG.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Indonesian Singer of all Time.......2005-03-13

When I first heard "La Neige au Sahara",I felt like being in the desert with an oasis or along the shoreline. Her voice evokes a wonderful images, it's like being in a forest, near the waterfall. Anggun is definetely the greatest Indonesian singer of all time. She's the only Indonesian artist that I love (i'm an indonesian and living in Java, btw). I dont like anymore Indonesian artists but Anggun. You go,Anggun!!!.

    5 out of 5 stars beautiful voice.......2002-07-30

This album transports you to a world of purfumed winds, exotic sands, and other such delights. The french lyrics are beautifully poetic, and the melodies are nostalgic and dreamy.

The instrumentation combines traditional sounds with more organic sound effects such as in "la neige au sahara" and fuse them seamlessly with western instrumentation. Anggun's voice is deep, rich and melodic.

I really enjoy putting this CD in my stereo and turning it up loud, on surround-sound, to get the full effect of the lush instrumentation.

I would recommend this CD to all music lovers. Anggun manages to create a unique and multicultural album with catchy melodies and introspective lyrics.

4 out of 5 stars A nice album , but somethng is missing.......2001-06-25

In this album , you will imagine that you are listening a new age one sometimes , but that is not true . The music at the back is just wonderful and the lyrics are nice as well , but sometimes , you cannot listen to her in thne middle of the song , she sings too unloud that sometimes it gets confused with the music at the back . I will say this is not the best album for her , but not too disapointed for not buying another one of her .

        5 out of 5 stars "Chrysalis" = Anggun's maturity and self-finding.......2005-03-13

This album was dissapointing when i first heard it. It doesnt sound like "Snow..." and there's just a little ethnic touch (i'm an ethnic music lover). But then i like it!!!.This album definetely shows her maturity in making music, proved by she wrote all the lyrics and almost the entire music. I love her definetely, she's always been wonderful. Her voice is heavier here, unlike in "Snow",but still, she's great. This album shows a new Anggun. My fave tracks:
"Breathing" -shows my feeling to Steve
"Want u To Want Me" -same like "breathing"
"A prayer" -very positive and sing-along. This song maybe the greatest religious song ever. It shows nothing but only one God. There's no religion line;we have exactly one supreme God.

        I love the entire songs!!!

        5 out of 5 stars What's Wrong with People?.......2004-10-22

This woman is just awesome. Everyone I've played her CD "Snow on the Sahara" for falls in love with her. I saw her on PBS and she blew me away; even better live. I thought maybe this is a fluke, that "Chysalis" would show me we were all wrong. But no, she is as wonderful as ever. She has such a smokey, sensual voice and her material and music matches it perfectly. I could listen to her forever. The world should know about her, don't know why they don't play her on the radio or VH1 either. WAKE UP AMERICA - DISCOVER ANGGUN!!

        5 out of 5 stars sober.......2003-03-20

Anggun....not only beatiful but extremely motivating. 'Still reminds Me' is a song i hold very dear to me. she sings from the heart, and seems to know what people are going through. when i first heard her album i couldn't believe how much it touched me, especially when i was going through a difficult period of my life.
i believe her music should be played more on the radio and MTV. Anggun, you are fabulous..please come sing in sri lanka...you will truly be loved!!

5 out of 5 stars Anggun's sophomore effort, better and better.......2003-01-09

They say things get better with age and evidently, Canada's Anggun (originally from Indonesia, works in France, but lives in Canada when not working) knows the score. Anggun has a style all her own. To truly appreciate her (for those of you in the US who aren't familiar with her work on her first full-length CD, 'Snow On The Sahara'), you'd have to combine Basia, Norah Jones, and Sarah McLachlan and this combination still comes short. Both full-length albums exist in French and the English imports have up to 5 bonus tracks. I found out about Anggun, by accident, in a San Francisco club. I've been hooked ever since.
Listening to her sophomore effort, I know why. Beauty, Sincerity, and personal lyrics are just the beginning, and here's to the beginning.

Still Reminds Me has a mild hip-hop beat (should have been a big US Radio hit, but was not pushed by Sony, anyway, it's great for driving with the top down or working out) with sultry vocals (you may heard this in the club scene with Jason Nevins remixes).

Rain is sensual and rhythmic with lyrics 'rain...tears of ecstasy' and 'rain..come down on me', this song just rains intimacy.

Breathing is a deep, heart-felt ballad about having deep feelings for someone but unable to be close to them, with lyrics ''cause I'm breathing far away from you and every second feels like thousands more without you', just breathing to be alive to be with you (I'm sure we all have someone we feel
        like this toward someone).

Chrysalis, already in radio friendly format, has been played in a few clubs using the Hex Hector mixes. A song about freedom and awareness of oneself and one's many personality traits, a self-esteem booster.

Tears of Sorrow, the 5th track, a song about human nature, ego, conflicts that mankind faces (money, power, ego, search for truth, etc). Could be easily remixed for the clubs (big hint here).

Want you to want me, yet another heartfelt ballad, talks about one's love for another and the request to be noticed by the first, the piano and Anggun; neither should be without the other.

How the world, the 7th track, is yet another social consciousness song regarding how mankind has progressed this far, as evident in the lyric, 'Oh i... don't know how the world keeps turning'

Easily remixed, A Prayer could be a club classic. A positive song, recognizing that special person/force that watches us all. An acknowledgement and thank you.

Non-angelical, bordering on cynical, Anggun lays down the law about the new girl you've taken up with. Again, easily remixed for the clubs.

Look Into Yourself, another positive self-esteem booster, the answer lies in ourselves if we just look. Again, easily remixed for the clubs.

Forbidden Love, her obsession with an unhealthly love but nearly unable to move on, edge of hip-hop beats, and an easy remix makes a club hit.

Signs of Destiny, the 12th track, is about meeting that special someone that we somehow feel is the one for us, our destiny. Again, easily remixed for the clubs.

Comme un privilege (the chorus en francais, the verse en anglais), is a very sultry, soft-spoken, beat driven ballad about her strong feelings enforced by that special someone.

The last track is the most personal, A Broken Dream, the fall of a significant relationship, Anggun's vocals sear deep into your heart as you feel her pain through out the song.

Whether it's being in love, falling out of love, or being fooled in love, Anggun knows the score.

Her voice flows flawlessly throughout the CD. Highly recommended. Also, check out 'Snow On The Sahara', and 'Open Hearts, OST'.

Anggun, please come to Texas (Dallas, Houston, or Austin).

        5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2002-04-11

Awww...Anggun's grown up a little since I first bought Snow on the Sahara. Her vocal style has matured, but remains lovely as always. The title track, especially, was a delight.

5 out of 5 stars I'm on listen 100 and still loving it.......2003-12-04

I've been a fan for a long time, and finally got this album about two months ago. Since then it has lived in my CD player in my bedroom, in my car, and at work, often a week at a time. I will listen to it three times a day and not get tired of it!

If you've heard anything from Anggun (Snow on the Sahara?) you know about her voice. It's an odd comparison, but the best I can compare it to is Sade mixed with Cher. What that really means is that she has a unique voice; it has a dark intensity that really sets her apart. This is not a novelty voice or special vocal processing that will fatigue you, like Macy Gray or some other flavor of the week! Her voice is just different. If you like her voice, also consider trying something from Loreena McKennitt.

Her songs are excellent. I'm not going to go through them one at a time, but I'll say that I just don't think there's a lemon on this CD. I enjoy every single one; I find them all thoughtfully arranged and the lyrics are excellent (Also check out Jeff Black's CD "Confessions and B-Sides Volume One"). These are pop songs, no doubt about it, but that's a compliment.

The songs range from songs of love, love lost, etc to more intimate and personal-sounding songs, such as "A Prayer," which I hear as a gratitude song to God.

I can't see myself getting tired of this CD. I'm still not tired of "Snow on the Sahara" so I think it's a safe bet.

4 out of 5 stars Chrysalis: Anggun On Her Way To Become A Butterfly.......2001-07-30

After Anggun's breathtaking international debut album Snow On The Sahara, you'll be excused to want more of something similar as a follow-up. In this case, you'll be disappointed. She skids repeatation trap here. Chrysalis is an album that needs (and deserves) to be appreciated for its own merits -- and it has quite a few of them. Give it a few listens (several tracks might need getting used to), and your disappointment will dissipate and turn into a smile. The smile of discovering another great music. And the smile of affirmation: that Anggun IS an interesting, talented artist worth watching for.

Anggun shows a leap of growth as an artist with Chrysalis. She wrote/co-wrote all the the lyrics, and co-wrote some of the melodies. The song materials are a bit uneven, but a fine effort in overall. Most of the songs are above average, and several of them shine. Compared to the poetical romanticism laced with visual imagery of her previous album, the lyrics in Chrysalis are more direct, more simple. This is not necessarily a bad thing. In the leading track Still Reminds Me, Anggun's simple lines (without being simplistic) can effectively evoke the melancholy and pangs of longing for someone who seems to have never left. Like her previous album, Anggun uses visual metaphors in Chrysalis, but contextually much simpler, sometimes very straightforward. This works fine when the song is playful and light-hearted -- like in the casual tittle track Chrysalis where she coyly coos "to get that one kiss, I'll wait patiently like a chrysalis." Not all the lyrics are about romantic love. A Prayer is Anggun's expression of faith, gratitude and hopes. In songs like Tears Of Sorrow and How The World..., Anggun gets philosophical on human nature and the world. But there's a difference between the two. The strong lyrics of Tears Of Sorrow (delivered in pop high-priestess style) sounds rather sombre and cynical. On the otherhand, How The World... is set with a playful, light hearted mood, and doesn't feel preachy despite the subject.

Another Anggun's growth in this album is in her vocals. More mature, smooth and balanced, her heart-felt vocals alone is enough reason to buy this album. Adding to this, Erick Benzi's stunning music arrangements, and great production quality, provide her voice with fitting soundscapes -- with enough subtle varieties from song to song. There are still ethnic touches and feel here, but done sparingly and in a sublimated way. Anggun seems to want to avoid the label "world pop" this time. With infectious drums, sweet guitars and dominant synths, the overall feel of the music is smart, cool, contemporary. A beautiful sound indeed.

Stand-out tracks: Still Reminds Me (a chart-topping radio hit in Europe and Asia) is an immediately likeable song with its beautifully layered vocals. The piano-led ballad Want You To Want Me is Anggun's haunting homage to a fan (written from the fan's point of view). Non Angelical is an absolutely infectious track that recalls B52 at their best, with playful drum beats, synth grooves and Gildas Arzel's delicious guitar stint. How The World... is set in bewitching Arabian/Indian style music, the only song in this album that is out-right ethnic, although the overall feel of the song is still contemporary.

Other tracks worth mentioning: Rain -- effective voice & sound compression that adds color and enhance the mood of the song. Chrysalis -- playful party style song. Broken Dream -- smart criss-crossing vocal-melody on top of cool fusion sound. Look Into Yourself -- self-contemplative lyrics with positive message but set in a slow-rolling, slightly sombre tone of music, with haunting chorus. A Prayer -- the sincerety and humbleness in Anggun's delivery, along with the very hopeful nature of the lyrics, are simply disarming here.

3.5 stars for song materials, 4 stars for music, 4 stars for vocals (now, if only the materials are more challenging!): Chrysalis is a smart, classy contemporary pop album worth buying.

4 out of 5 stars A Definately Worth To Buy!!!!.......2001-07-16

i already got anggun debut album.snow on sahara. So im looking forward for another song as 'haunting' as snow on sahara.I bought her second album without no doubt.I've been told that she wrote or co-wrote the lyric in this album. Thus i have this doubt that either she can really entice me with the song as good as snow on sahara. The first single Still Reminds Me is a sensual song with very kewl music video.I like her music video. The other song really caught my attention esp songs like A Prayer(helps me when im depress),Look Into Yourself(boosting your self confidence),Chrysalis, etc.All of the tracks are very special. The music is more up to date, more up beat and rich with mixture of sound from eastern and western. This time anggun came out with very kewl video such as Chrysalis(party type, futuristic enviroment),Look Into Yourself(interesting,SUper Nice video).Add to that you will have more different kewl sound with her singles.Remix by famous Dj such as hex hector, jason nevins. This album is a must buy album. If your not her fans, you'll be her fans for life!

5 out of 5 stars Anggun is Phenomenal!!!!!!.......2001-06-15

After listing to Anggun's "Snow on the Sahara" album I could not wait to hear her next album. "Chrysalis" is absolutely beautiful. It is really difficult to pick my favorite song, I would have to say it is "Still Reminds Me". Anggun's voice is so powerful and inspiring. I would recommend this album to any intense music lover.

        5 out of 5 stars I love anggun........2001-06-02

I know that i'm only 12 but i still love anggun. I know most people don't think i would know much about anggun but i know everything about her.LOL.
