Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Substantial 70's soul sampler.......2004-03-10

This follow-up to the first volume of Hip-O's soul compilations mining the vaults of ABC and associated labels takes us into the early 70's. While this collection is of soul sides, all but one of the included tracks were top-100 pop hits as well with three making the pop top-10. So what you find here are not rarities but a sampling of major soul and pop sides of the early 70's most of which are available on other CD collections. Tunes from some of the biggest soul names of the era are here, read B.B. King, Bobby Bland, Ike and Tina Turner. Two tunes from the post-Motown years of the induring Four Tops, one being the top-5 pop gem, "Ain't No Woman Like The One I've Got", keep the mix familiar to even the most casual listener of 70's radio play. Nestled between its many familiar and easily found tunes though are a few less mainstream sides to add a bit more interest in the form of Nolan Porter's "If I Could Only Be Sure" and the Dixie Hummingbirds, who after backing Paul Simon on his hit, did their own version of "Loves Me Like A Rock". While the track count is on the meager side for a compilation CD, there is no filler here and with the respectable sound quality and informative liner notes, this piece is a solid addition to the series. While now out of print at the time of this review, for those seeking any of the tracks included, this is worthwhile seeking out in the secondary market.
