Customer Reviews:
Nice start to the series.......2003-05-24
ABC Records, home to such pop icons as Paul Anka, Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme in the 50's, branched out into the r'n'b arena in the 60's with such acts as Curtis Mayfield's Impressions, the Tams and Ray Charles. Through purchases of other labels, ABC gained control of the catalog of other soul powerhouses such as Bobby Bland and B. B. King. ABC itself eventually wound up under the MCA, now Universal Music umbrella. This series of CD compilations from Hip-O samples tunes from the ABC and associated labels during the 60's and 70's. This first volume contains tunes from the '61-'69 period, offering up a sampling of big r'n'b hits, many of which were also substantial pop hits. Included here are such staples as the Impressions' "Gypsy Woman" and "We're A Winner", the Tams' "What Kind Of Fool Do You Think I Am", Eddie Holman's revival and gender-adjusted version of Ruby And The Romantics' "Hey There Lonely Girl (Boy)" and the Marvellos' quirky "I Do". Besides the big hits are rarities such as Maxine Brown's "My Time For Cryin'" and a couple of Ike and Tina Turner tunes from their stint on the Blue Thumb label making this piece of equal interest to the collector as well as the casual listener. While the track count is a bit on the meager side for a reissue compilation, Hip-O has done a respectable job here production-wise. Sound quality is overall very good with many tracks in stereo, the exceptions being 2,3 and 7, in mono. Although the track listing information could have been a bit more comprehensive, the liner notes booklet does provide some backround on the included acts. Although at the time of this review this piece is out of print, for those interested in the tracks included, it is worthwhile seeking out on the secondary market.
A GREAT SET.......2000-05-04
THE COOL THING ABOUT COMPILATIONS is Getting Songs You Won't.Not Buying a Disc for only one song.this DIsc has Many Great Songs on it.THE IMPRESSIONS Were A Winner.CURTIS MAYFIELD ALways Brought Out Strong BLACK PRIDE.GOD BLESS THAT BROTHER.EDDIE HOLEMAN'S LONELY GIRL is THE JAM.B.B KING also shines on The Thrill Is Gone.A Must.
