As its title indicates, this 1985 recording marked Barbra Streisand's return to her Broadway roots (significantly, she had dropped her pop-period Guilty perm and returned to straight hair). The CD contains a broad selection of show tunes, from Guys and Dolls's "Adelaide's Lament" to Sweeney Todd's "Not While I'm Around." But let's face it: this may also be one of Babs's most dated albums, due to typically '80s synthesizer-heavy arrangements that simply don't work with the material. Company's "Being Alive" is scarred by a preening alto sax, while West Side Story's "Something's Coming" features what sounds suspiciously like syndrums. But--and it's a pretty big "but"--Streisand sounds more buttery than ever ("Send in the Clowns" may be one of her finest '80s moments), so much so that she often manages to overcome the cheesy production. Now that's a singer. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Learning About Love While Yearning.......2007-06-09
C. Kenneth Burkholder, who via an understanding was at the time of the original release of this was Barbra's prospectve father-in-law and whose death has occurred, said of this "If I Loved You", "That's nice." The tragicomic rendition of part of Adelaide fascinatingly points out some dangers of stripping for pay.
Just past the beginning of creating "What Times Are," a musical by (a) pacifist(s) as well as an adaptation of my play "What Time Is It, Neil Armstrong?," which is a sequel to my novel "How Did That Sun Get Out," I am inspired by the yearning apparent in "The Broadway Album"--a yearning not for perfection but for worthwhile ways for people all over the earth and in space to spend time.
Great !.......2007-02-27
I bought the CD to replace my worn-out cassette tape, and I was pleased to find it has one more track -- Adelaide's Lament -- which I enjoyed. Nice to have another comic song to balance out the love songs. She brings out the beauty of these lovely tunes.
Number one .......2007-02-05
Barbra is the number one female ballad singer of all time. No one has her range of feeling, the sheer lyric power of her voice, her sometimes exaggerated but often poignant power to dramatically express feeling. She can create the chill down the spine with a small trill or with a wild unexpected crescendo. 'Broadway' is her first home, and acting a song as she sings it comes natural to her.
This is one of her finest albums.
she believes the hype.......2006-10-12
This is from the big-shot who thinks she can control a political party and tell fans what to think about issues despite being a high-school dropout. She's a good singer, but not the best. She basically needs to shut the eff up and sing. Hey, those are her words, right?
Lovely voice, lovely songs.......2006-08-02
This album contains the choicest of Broadway hits given an outstanding interpretation by the Streisand. Barbra's flawless voice moves up and down with ease as the melodies unfold. Perfect!

Customer Reviews:
Nice Collection in the Dino Style.......2005-07-15
If you like Dean Martin's style of singing, this is a nice collection. The CD is a reissue of two of his older albums. It includes some of his standards as well as some less well known pieces. The transfer is of good quality and so is the album.
AGAIN,ONE LESSER,ONE GOOD.......2003-10-19
THE DOOR IS STILL OPEN TO MY HEART is the lesser one with a few hits and a lot of fillers, and again a few songs from the country albums of 1963.The pleasant surprize is WE'LL SING IN THE SUNSHINE.REMEMBER ME is the good one ,in which DEAN has fun with some modern standards of the time. Also included are BUMMING AROUND,one of his national anthems,MY SHOES KEEP WALKING BACK TO YOU and WALK ON BY(both wonderful).DINO'S fans will love this LP.It is a perfect selection of songs for him.Wouldn't it have been nice if they had coupled all the good albums together and left the others with a stamp labeled LEFTOVERS-COLLECTORS ITEMS?
Takes Me Back.......2002-12-22
I'm 42 years old and my mom was a die-hard Dino fan. Of all Dean's albums threse two were her favorite. We listened to them right through the Seventies. My brother found this CD in the music store and played it for me yesterday. Even though I hadn't listened to either album in many years I could still sing along with Dean right off the bat. It really took me back. My mom played these on an endless loop when we drove to Florida for our family vacation . . . . an avocado-green '73 Mercury Colony Park station wagon with faux wood-grain side-panels, cruising south, doing 80 on I-65 with Dino crooning on the eight track. That was livin'! Dean is enjoying a burst of popularity right now and deservedly so. The man had pipes and the coolest attitude of any pop singer. One of the only guys I'm not embarrassed to sing along with. This CD is a MUST for all Dino devotees. Not a weak track anywhere on either album. If you're new to Dino, this is the best place to start your collection. Go for it!
The Door Is Still Open/I'm The One Who Loves You.......2002-04-08
Dean Martin, one of the finest and most soothing pure vocalists of all time, is back on the market as the entire "Reprise" collection finally makes its way onto compact disc. At age 22, I'm perhaps one of Dino's youngest fans but by no means one of his least enthusiastic. This disc which comprises the albums "And The Door Is Still Open To My Heart" and "Remember Me, I'm The One Who Loves You" has been remastered beautifully and is pure pleasure to listen to for its duration of just over an hour. These albums are two of Dino's very best at Reprise, perhaps even of his entire career. Dean sings each and every song in his own unmistakable style and makes you feel that you've never heard them before he crooned them (even "Red Roses for a Blue Lady", a song I have ALWAYS hated). Giovanni's review covers all the territory I would have covered if he didn't beat me to the punch : ) Fans and collectors out there...Buy This CD!
ANOTHER GREAT COLLECTION FROM DINO.........2002-02-17
and the good people at Collector's Choice Music. The loyal masses who have long suffered and waited for Dean's Reprise albums will wait no longer; they're all available now! Here are two of Dean's gold albums on one fine CD. Riding the wave of the hugely popular "Hit Sound" from arranger/conductor Ernie Freeman and producer Jimmy Bowen, Dean undertook these two albums with full force. The first, the "DOOR IS STILL OPEN" sides, find Dean making wonderful music on the title track, not to mention his take on a popular song of the day, "WE'LL SING IN THE SUNSHINE", which seems tailor made to fit his easy swingin' approach (the original was considerably more folksy, and thus, not quite as happy-go-lucky as Dean's) The "sing-a-long" motif behind the country-tinged "CLINGING VINE" is classic Dean; as is the tender yet driving ballad "ALWAYS TOGETHER". The "REMEMBER ME" sides are just as wonderful, especially Dean's take on the Roger Miller hit "KING OF THE ROAD". Also included here is Dean's TV Theme song, "WELCOME TO MY WORLD". More covers here with Dean's own indelible stamp on them: "BORN TO LOSE" (immortalized by Ray Charles) and even the Donny Osmond semi hit "THE BIRDS AND THE BEES" as only Dean could deliver! THIS, my friends is, as Dino would say, AMORE. Original liner notes and album artwork included from the people at Collector's Choice. There are 11 other such volumes like this...get'em all!

Frankie Valli & 4 Seasons - who loves you.......2007-03-13
A classic album from the 70's. I have an old cassette tape of this (snapped!)and have been scouring record shops for years for any vinyl/ CD versions. Amazon UK didn't have it listed, but I got it so easily from Amazon USA & it arrived within a week. Exactly the same tracks in the same original order. Pity about no album sleeve stuff, but that's CD's for you! The sound quality, especially on Ipod, is superb.
I Love it.......2006-02-15
With it's mix of ballads, dance tunes, do-wop, and a dash of rock, this was an album my sister used to own, and I snapped up the CD version when I saw it. The only problem is that the songs are not in the original order, but I won't cry over that. The harmonies, and music are still good.
Seasons Comeback.......2005-12-28
After Frankie Valli scored a number one hit in early 1975 with "My Eyes Adored You" and followed that up with a top ten hit "Swearin' To God", the Four Seasons regrouped later in the year. The album produced their biggest hit, the radio classic "December, 1963 (Oh What A Night)" that went to number one in early 1976. Also hitting the top ten, peaking at number three, was the title track that while not as popular as the former, it is the best track on the album. Tight harmonies and trading of vocals from Mr. Valli & Bob Gaudio make for a great single. "Silver Star" was a minor hit and has a old west theme while "Harmony Perfect Harmony" is pretty song that harkens back to their salad days.
Basically, it's 8 bucks for 2 songs..........2004-06-05
But they're two pretty good songs. I don't like much else on this CD, but I loved the two hits (Who Loves You, December 1963) when they came out. And since those tunes are tough to find elsewhere, I grabbed 'em here.
It grooves.......2003-12-14
This is definitely Four Seasons best album. Great music, great lyrics, and great feel. It really grooves.

Disappointed.......2007-01-11
I received my CD in good condition and in a fair amount of time. However, I was very disappointed to find that the CD was a promotional CD which only included one song and "snippets" of five other songs off of the complete album.
I feel that the seller wasn't completely forthcoming in describing the item. If you're going to order something from this seller be sure you know what your buying before you pay your hard earned money.
One of the Best Neo-Soul Songs.......2006-06-27
I just heard this song four days ago and it has been on nonstop repeat. This is a great song with a good sample of Earth, Wind, and Fire's "Can't Hide Love" in the background. Raheem DeVaughn's smooth voice goes up and down, in and out, and all around the lyrics in a sensual combination. This is definitely a MUST HAVE single on anyone's neo-soul collection.
GUESS WHO LOVES YOU MORE.......2006-05-19
I thought i reviewed this but will happily do it again.
I discovered Raheem on the music choice tv channel. Of course I could not resist. His album was not released yet but it was all over the internet (even tracks that weren't on the album). I loveded it so much that I decided to go out and buy the album. I love his cd. I am not a fan of too much up tempo songs BUT his slow jams are GREAT and thats an understatement.
I would defanitely say purchase this album, incase you are wondering.
CANT HIDE LOVE.......2006-02-16
This song is great!! It took me too long to take notice and now I say, pick it up!! Great job done to Earth Wind Fire's "Can't Hide Love" music....PICK IT UP!!!
I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!.......2006-01-16
THE FIRST TIME I EVER HEARD THIS SONG WAS LAST YEAR. THIS MAN SOUNDS SO GOOD. THEY HAD STOPPED PLAYING IT ON THE RADIO. SO, I HAD TO CLOSELEY LISTEN TO THE NAME THAT THE RADIO HAD CALLED. AS SOON AS I FOUND OUT THE ARTIST OF THIS SONG I HAD TO BUY THE WHOLE CD BUT THIS SONG IS ALL OF THAT. THIS BROTHER HAS SOUL .
WORLD LET HIM IN. WATCH OUT WORLD BECAUSE HERE COMES RAHEEM A TRUE SOUL ARTITST THAT WE NEED. WE HAVEN'T HAD ANY REAL SOUL IN A LONG TIME AND RAHEEM IS THE INGREDIENT THAT WE NEED.

The best? I think not........2004-01-11
This disc includes some songs that, while I like them, are not what people might consider the "best" of G&S. Of course, anything by G&S is good, it's still not the "best of the best."
There has got to be something that better represents the G&S canon.
can't understand the words.......2004-01-08
Don't know about those other reviewers, but I just can't make out very much of the lyrics. Maybe those folk have better CD players or better hearing, but it's pretty much a blur to me. I strongly recommend "The Ultimate Gilbert and Sullivan" instead.

If you're ever feeling down and don't know who you can talk to, just run to the arms of the one who loves you. You know who that is, don't you? Customer Reviews:
Absolutely, definitely!.......2007-07-13
Now this is more like it! What we have here is an album that excites right from the start. As soon as Michael Brecker's tenor rings out at the start of the Jimmy Hendrix tune "Third Stone from the Sun", I know I'm in for a good time. With Joey Calderazzo on piano, John Patitucci on bass and Jeff Tain Watts on drums, it's all go, go, go. The album was recorded back in 2000 and just like The Word Is Out, (which I reviewed just before this one), the list of musicians who feature on here reads like a cross between a wishlist and a who's who of the modern jazz world. Again, many of my favourites are on here.
Only five of the eleven songs here are Pastorius compositions and I believe the other six give the writers and performers a much more interesting way to honour the great bass man than might have been the case if they'd just recorded an entire album of songs written by him.
The entire CD is top notch but personal highlights include: the Pastorius tune "Continuum", featuring Victor Bailey doing some really wild stuff on bass, Gil Goldstein & Michael Colina on keyboards, Steve Gadd on drums and Don Alias on percussion; "Jaco", written by Gil Goldstein, and featuring (the always incredibly articulate) Bob Mintzer on tenor saxophone, Mike Stern on guitar, Goldstein on keys, Mark Egan on bass, Gadd on drums and Alias on percussion; John Patitucci's "Fall'n Star" (my overall favourite), which features a two bass lines - the upper, more improvised and Jaco-esque line played by Patitucci and the lower, fuller line by James Genus. Steve Cardenas plays guitar, George Whitty plays keys and Peter Erskine plays the drums; and last but by no means least, there's the mournful Peter Erskine composition "Song for Jaco - Song for a Friend", which, alongside Cardenas on guitar, Genus on bass & Erskine on drums, features David Sanborn on alto sax & Bob James on keys. Whenever this song comes up I always find myself wondering why they (Sanborn & James) didn't give us a few tunes like this on Double Vision, the album they did together in 1986? Don't get me wrong, I love that album dearly but one or two tunes like this would've taken it to a whole new level. Their performances here are breathtaking.
And I also totally prefer the versions here of "Three Views of a Secret" (featuring Randy Brecker on trumpet, Bob James on piano, Steve Cardenas on guitar, James Genus on bass & Peter Erskine on drums) and "Dania" (featuring Bob Mintzer on tenor sax, Hiram Bullock on guitar, Jim Beard on keys, Mark Egan on bass, Steve Gadd on drums & Don Alias on percussion); the only two songs this album has in common with "The Word Is Out".
All in all, this is one stellar album that seems to have fallen completely under the radar. Excellent production by Michael Colina (except for "Portrait of Tracy", which was performed and produced by Marcus Miller); the sound practically jumps out of the speakers. As a study of what can be done with the bass guitar, the album is astonishing. It's so easy to see from listening to it, why Pastorius has influenced all the pre-eminent bass players in modern jazz today, bar none. Every single artiste featured on this is truly awesome though. Every single one.
This is another one of my top 100 albums of all time. 5 stars aren't nearly enough.
I think Jaco would've dug it.......2005-06-14
This is my favorite kind of tribute album: honoring, but not slavishly so; evoking the spirit of the tributee, but not necessarily sounding all that much like him; filled with former playing partners, but also including some ringers.
It was smart to feature Michael Brecker on the first track. He comes charging out of the gate at full gallop and never lets up. What a wonderful player he is, perhaps the true heir to John Coltrane. It must be said that the shadow he casts at least somewhat obscures the other saxists (Bill Evans, Bob Mintzer, and David Sanborn), who nevertheless acquit themselves admirably.
Another imposing presence is guitarist Steve Cardenas, someone with huge chops and a brilliant concept who's been rather overlooked on the jazz scene. Check out his playing on "Fall'n Star." Peter Erskine on drums also impresses mightily. Of the bassists Mark Egan seems most to have absorbed and advanced Jaco's ideas.
I can do without the will Lee vocal on "Come on Over," but it must be said that he gives a spirited enough rendition; it's just that this number seems to break the spell that's been building with the brilliant instrumentals. "Three Views of a Secret" nicely recaptures the vibe and features a wonderful quintet consisting of Randy Brecker (Channeling Miles on muted trumpet), Bob James (piano), Steve Cardenas (guitar, who takes a brilliantly understated solo), James Genus (a hugely underrated bass player), and Erskine (at his declamatory best on drums).
Never less than eminently listenable, this session often treads in precincts of brilliance. Very much worth acquiring.
A Profoundly Ingenius Interpretation of Spirit.......2004-01-04
Who Loves You is the sincerest collective attempt to capture the spirit of Jaco's music. If you want to hear Jaco playing in
a bad room with poor engineering buy the other CD's.
If you wish to hear an intellegent production that encompasses
Jaco's spirit and compositional expertise then this is without a doubt a must for those that truley understand the breadth
of his work.
Who Loves this CD?!?.......2002-04-08
If you read Down Beat every month and agree with the album critics etc. you`ll really love this CD! However if you are a true Jaco fan you`d probably want to smash the CD to the head of the producer of this project!
The only musician stands out in the album is Marcus Miller, such a beautiful version of Portrait of Tracy. The rest of the album is really Down Beat!
A poor tribute done by great musicians, that`s my two cents...
A LABOR OF LOVE.......2001-11-09
The people who play on this disc love Jaco. You can tell. The music is passionate. The music is Jaco's. The disc works, because the players feel Jaco. This really brings Jaco alive. You can feel him in the room. The bass players are John Patitucci, James Genus, Will Lee, Victor Bailey, Mark Egan, and Marcus Miller. They aren't Jaco, but they'll do very nicely. The rest of the players are world class. The production is world class. The sonics are world class. "Three Views Of A Secret", "Continuum", "Portrait of Tracy", and the rest. You know what his songs were. The only thing I would have liked was to hear "Punk Jazz", and "Teen Town". I prefer his rockers. However, when they make these types of discs, you'll never usually get your own recipe here. No taking away any stars. The playing is great and it's very progressive. It's very modern. Buy this. Let me say this. If you are thinking of getting involved with Jazz and you don't know what to buy, buy this. A great introduction to the greatest bass player of all time.
