This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Emil Gilels' personal selection of favorite lyric pieces is one of his most praised and best recordings. The pianist obviously selected the pieces with which he felt the strongest identification, and he plays them lovingly, with sprightly rhythms and a rich, singing tone. Gilels was the one who identified himself as second to Sviatoslav Richter--"If you think I'm something, wait until you hear Richter," he supposedly said. But this collection is just as beautiful in its way as Richter's lyric collections. Along with some of his Chopin playing, this Grieg set reminds us that Gilels was a major Romantic pianist. --Leslie Gerber

Superb historical achievement!.......2006-04-27

Emil Gilels temperament has always been at least to my mind extremely cold and even analytical. His powerful phrasing is first rate, who can deny it? .

However, he recorded for the posterity two emblematic works; this album and Brahms Piano Quartet Op. 25 with Amadeus Quartet(see my review).

Gilels was at top form that historical evening with these Grieg pieces. This miniaurist composer deads from the player a sensitive imagination as well as a warm approach to win. Gilels made it and so he achieved one of his three best recordings in his life.

So please do not miss this album.

Restoration .......2005-07-26

It is so good to hear this recording again! Many years ago, I owned this recording, on vinyl, of Emil Gilels playing selections from Grieg's Lyric Pieces. I've recently just got around to restoring it to my collection. It is a most beautiful recording of some of the most beautiful compositions for piano. Gilel's playing is gorgeous. What a pleasure it is to hear again!

Get Einar Stein Nokleberg Complete Set!!!.......2005-05-25

Grieg's Lyric pieces are miniature jewels and they are well played by Gilels.I wish to recommend the complete set of Grieg's piano works on the Naxos label by Einar Stein Nokleberg which outclasses Gilels both in recording quality as well as in performance.Nokleberg is excellent and consistent throughout playing with incredible sensitivity.Especially the Lyric pieces (Vol 8 -vol 10)is played with poetic flair and rock steady rhythm.Great Piano Playing.A must Buy for all Grieg Lovers.

The surpassing piano art of Emil Gilels keeps these Grieg miniatures free of sentimentality. Relying on lustrous tone, humor and breathtaking musical intelligence, Gilels sets an imcomparable standard wisely highlighted by chronological programming of his choices. The quizzical beauty of small music requires urgent musicianship of both composer and performer, something that defines this CD. I play it every chance I get. Gilels' playing is one of the wonders of the world; I'll always wish he'd recorded more repertory than he did. Thankfully we have this, his Mozart and especially his Ravel. Hard to be disappointed with a CD this fine.

Pure musical indulgence.......2004-11-10

Gilels brings richness to Grieg's short, but texturally satisfying lyric pieces that will not disappoint accomplished musicians or lovers of romantic piano music. Right at the start, he reaches out and caresses your emotions with his delicate but confident artistry in the Arietta, leaving you with a sense of peaceful longing when the ending ritardando comes too soon. My only disappointment in the overall CD quality was that the dynamic range seems slightly, and possibly artificially high, requiring periodic volume adjustment in order to preserve the optimum quality and enjoyment of the sound.

American Music of Hope and Glory.......2007-04-09

Although I have known about Sacred Harp Music for many years, this album utterly overwhelmed me in its power, beauty and expression of pure American strength and faithful surety. I grew up in the churches of Christ, one of the few American denominations that uses only a capella four-part harmony vocal music in their worship services. Shape notes were known to me since I was able to understand a musical staff, and we used shape notes for each note on the scale (a few more than The Sacred Harp Tradition). Alas, over time, the immense power and beauty of true Sacred Harp music was "homogenized" into congregational singing that remains quite beautiful, but no longer has the vigor of The Sacred Harp tradition. (The churches of Christ still, to this day, occasionally have "Sings" - an all afternoon singing festival with food and fellowship, as do Sacred Harp "Singing Classes" today). This album above all speaks - rather SINGS to the immense faith of Frontier America, and the absolutely majesterial beauty of music well-sung from the human heart, which is, of course, The "Sacred Harp". To any who want to experience a new (and very old) musical tradition, this recording will be one that you will never forget. All choral music singers and admirers should own this marvelous album. (Having a copy of the "1991 Sacred Harp Hymnal" in hand will make your enjoyment all the better!)

Unbridled spiritual energy.......2005-01-01

Anyone who saw "Cold Mountain" and was struck by the vitality and energy of the hymn singing in that one brief scene in church will be immediately impressed with this stunning album. The album's only flaw is that, unfortunately, it does not include that hymn that was in "Cold Mountain" (it is titled "I'm Going Home").

Otherwise, it is pure joy to listen to. The singing is full of that same raw passion that makes it sound so primitive. I've heard other albums where the sound is polished, concert-hall like, and as a result very dead. This is not that way; it moves and stirs as good spiritual music ought to.

This is a new field of music for me, even though I've sung in church choirs for years and listened to all kinds of classical music. Hearing this album makes me want to go find the sheet music and start singing it myself, it is so infectious.

I'm certainly not a young ballerina, but this is a lovely little CD. I love ballet music anyway and this has some of my favorites. (I gave the T-shirt transfer of the young ballerina away to a friend's daughter)

Though their recording career spanned a mere five years, Mott the Hoople saw more than their share of ups and downs; the ups being of the artistic sort while the downs were related more closely to the grind of the road and the demands of their short-lived stardom. What am I missing?.......2007-03-02

OK... I don't get it. I always thought that I'd adore Mott. Quite honestly, all I'd heard was All The Young Dudes, but I'm a complete Bowie fanatic and have been for a good 20 years. Being that I was only 3, though, when Mott had their heyday, all I'd known was All The Young Dudes. Still, they had everything right going for them, and their reputation was excellent. Plus the majority of the Bowie-produced All The Young Dudes album is here, plus nearly all of their other acclaimed albums, Mott and The Hoople.

Wow. What a disappointment. Maybe you had to be there when this was big, but I would say upwards of 80 percent of this is just horrible. Bad Dylany impersonations, dumb lyrics (they've milked the words "ballad/hymn" and "dudes" for all they are worth) and (because of Mick Ralphs involvement) -- worst of all -- too much macho Bad Co.-inspired boring rock.

No spark here, aside from All The Way to Memphis, ATYD, Sea Diver, their version of Sweet Jane and maybe Whizz Kidd.

Big big big disappointment. I bought this because I thought the single disc Greatest Hits wouldn't be enough. Now even that's too much.

Lotsa hype here but it just doesn't deliver. If you only know ATYD, just stick w/ Bowie's version of this great song and be done.

A great start for a great band.......2007-01-18

How to describe Mott the Hoople? Raucous, wry, introspective, passionate, fun -- What a shame Mott never really hit it that big in the US -- our loss.

This was my intro to Mott. Now I am so hooked. On Ballad of Mott:Retrospective, you get nearly all of their three most famous records -- All the Young Dudes, Mott, and The Hoople. You get a little taste of their sound from before they joined the Columbia label -- just enough to wet your whistle for the early stuff.

What's really remarkable about this set is the high quality of the b-sides and previously unreleased material. Mott's b-sides were better than many other group's best songs.

Great Compilation!.......2005-07-29

Mott the Hoople was one of the most interesting British glam-rock bands of the 1970's. They started their recording career with Island Records as a progressive rock band. They released 4 fine ( though uneven ) records for Island during 1969-72, before they changed for CBS. This change combined with David Bowie producing his own "All the Young Dudes" for them gave the big breakthrough and a new profile as the rock'n rollers of glam rock.

This 2 CD collection concentrates on their CBS period, though each of their 4 Island albums are represented by one track. These 4 tracks are all good songs in their own right, but can obviously not cover the great variety of their output during that period. So go for other compilations / or the originals ( now with bonus-tracks ) if you want to research their early days.

David Bowie produced their first album "All the Young Dudes", and his touch his very apparent through-out the album. The sound is close to his own on albums like "Hunky Dory", "Ziggy Stardust" or "Alladin Sane". Only two track has been left out from that album, which along with the follow-up "Mott" was their most consistent record. Their song-writing matured during that period, and although the band was uncertain whether they would be able cope with Bowie's skill, when the recording's of "Mott" began, that self-produced album shows the band at the peak of their creativity. Only one track is missing from the album. Outstanding tracks from the album are the rockers "All the Way From Memphis" and "Honaloochie Boogie" along with the great ballads ""I Wish I Was Your Mother", "Ballad of Mott the Hoople" and "Hymn for the Dudes".

Unfortunately guitarist and songwriter Mick Ralphs was growing frustrated with Ian Hunter taking more and more of the spotlight, and he left soon after the release of "Mott". Spooky Tooth guitarist Luther Grosvenor ( Ariel Bender ) was recruited to take his place, but things never become the same again.

Their final studio album, the slightly chaotic and spotty "The Hoople", did contain some fine tracks and was a commercial succes, containing the two hit-singles "The Golden Age of Rock'n Roll" and "Roll Away the Stone"; but the spark had gone, and they spilt up in 1974.

Besides their albums the band recorded some fine singles-only tracks; all of which are included here. Hunter's ballad "Rose" is outstanding and it also became a live-favourite. The late B-side "Rest in Peace" is another song in the same category - great song!

The two 1974 A-sides "Foxy Foxy" and "Saturday Gigs" are also great; especially the autobiografical ballad "Saturday Gigs" is outstanding. This was one of the very last recordings they did, featuring guitarist Mick Ronson. A little sad they did split up after that, because the recording shows that this new line-up had the potential of creating new exciting material. On the other hand "Saturday Gigs" is a worthy final note to the career of a great band.

Buy All the Young Dudes and Mott before buying this.......2005-05-27

If you like the band enough to be contemplating buying this retrospective, a much better place to start is with All the Young Dudes and Mott. Those two albums are classics in the purest sense: songwriting and execution are as good as it gets in rock music. The other individual albums are not as essential and relatively inconsistent in comparison with the 2 previously mentioned. For most people, therefore, this compilation samples the rest of the band's catalogue sufficiently.

Missing a great song.......2005-03-18

Mott's version of You Really Got Me was one of the greatest instrumental covers of all time. It's missing from this compilation.

Cordelia's Dad vocalist Tim Eriksen has probably seen the inside of more New England flea markets and garage sales than your average grandmother. The results of such musical searches having previously provided material for Eriksen's band, they likewise are sources for his self-titled solo CD (in fact, sometimes both; this CD includes only his most recent recording of "Farewell to Old Bedford"). What's particularly interesting about the pared-down interpretations of ballads, hymns, and other folk material on Tim Eriksen is that Eriksen didn't start out as a folk preservationist. Cordelia's Dad was initially plugged-in and punk, and their catalogue provides some interesting listening as it chronicles the transition from garage rock to roots music. However rooted in tradition Eriksen is these days, though, there's still something of a punk aesthetic at work here: the songs on Tim Eriksen are unabashed, forthright, honest, and were recorded in just a few short hours one November afternoon. Eriksen's also evolved considerably as a singer from those early days, and here, often unaccompanied, his voice is full of raw power and emotional intensity. As always with any of Eriksen's projects, the liner notes provide enlightening courses in American musical history. --Genevieve Williams

An Incredible Solo Work.......2001-05-16

This mesmerizing recording represents a stunning accomplishment. While it will be a must-buy item for the "party faithful" followers of Cordelia's Dad, it is also a compelling work for anyone desirous of a top flight vocal recording. The dark harmonies, indeed eery at times, are as captivating as the striking lyrics. Although principally unaccompanied, there is an occasional acoustic guitar track (of startling quality) and one with clawhammer banjo accompaniment. If this were a vinyl LP, it would be worn out by now given the amount of use it has seen in the one month since release.

Tim Eriksen, singer and member of Cordelia's Dad, Zabe i Babe, and Northampton Harmony, has put together a wonderful album of solo work; fine renditions of traditional American ballads and a few original works as well. If you like traditional American music, you need to check out this collection.

This album tops the previous "Viveza, Music in the Palm Court Style". The groups' inventiveness really shines in this CD. From a marimba version of Piazzola's "Milonga del Angel" to an absolutely smashing version of Moritat (Mack the Knife from Threepenny Opera), the selections are superb. I highly recommend this one!

Just Right for Internet Work.......2000-03-21

We have entertained ourselves with the video Jeeves and Wooster for the past two years. Since my wife and I played in classical orchestras, we greatly enjoy the quality and "just right" musical pace of the CD for office internet work stimulation. Now we ordered another copy for home entertainment.

Be Nice To Me:The Ballad Of Todd's second album.......2007-03-27

This one isn't as good as some of Todd's other albums but certainly has some good songs on it. Much of the feel is a laid back early 70's feel to it. For me, the highlights are: The Ballad, The Range War, Be Nice To Me and Hope I'm Around(first heard on first pressings of Runt but not listed on the cover). The rest of this album is okay nothing bad but nothing that really sticks in your head either. I guess that the Rhino version has gone out of print sometime in the last couple of years. It's unfortunate that since Warner Bros. bought out Rhino at the end of the 90's, Warner has basically turned it into their oldies label and dropped alot of the cool Rhino stuff. This is currently available as a JVC Japan import and the sound, as usual, is great

Best 8-Track Ever.......2006-10-27

First you absolutely MUST acquire these tracks at any cost. Then build a playlist in the original 8-Track order: Long Flowing Robe; The Range War; Parole; Bleeding; A Long Time And A Long Way To Go; Boat On The Charles; The Ballad (Denny And Jean); Wailing Wall; Nice To Me; Remember Me; Chain Letter; Hope I'm Around. Set to repeat and let 'er rip. I tend to appreciate the unified vision of singer-writers that record most of their own parts, as Nigel Godrich talked Sir Paul into revisiting in 2005 with fine results. Along with Rundgren and McCartney I've enjoyed "solos" by Stevie Wonder, Emmit Rhodes and OF COURSE Jason Falkner. However I believe that this Todd cycle will NEVER be eclipsed. This one is special.

One of Todd's best.......2006-03-17

It's hard to think of an album you would want to start a non-Todd fan on, but I think this would be it. Long enough to be a treat, but short enough to where Todd doesn't get into his "weird" space (think Da Da Dali, which I still haven't forgiven him for). "Chain Letter" is loads of fun, "The Range War" is great to sing with friends when you're drunk (did I say drunk? I meant reading the Bible), and "Boat on the Charles" is so beautiful that you may not realize until later that he's singing about suicide. Every cut is wonderful, yet so different that you can barely believe they're all from the same GUY, let alone the same album. And yet, it all fits. That's the genius of Todd.

Todd: a master of styles.......2004-09-10

Todd Rundgren dispalys a superb mastery of styles on this his second solo lp.

The overall feel of this music not dissimilar to Carole Kings's tapestry with the beatles thrown in. Rundgren moves effortlessly from pop to soul ballards and country rock and he is also an acomplished musician playing guitars, pianio, precussion and sax and produces some really nice harmonies.

The stand out track 'Wailing Wall' is a stunning piano vocal miniture, but I also particularly like 'Boat on the Charles' with it's evocative piano and sax.

For me this is Todd's finest moment. Something Anything is a classic, but this is more even and perfectly paced.

Todd's first of many masterpieces........2004-06-13

Whereas "Runt" was a little disjointed and experimental at times, "The Ballad of Todd Rundgren" is pure pop. Although its not as stylistically diverse as its follow-up "Something/Anything?", the songwriting is just as strong.

"Long Flowing Robe" is a great Carole King styled pop song to open things up. It's just catchy hook after catchy hook until you can't figure out what the *actual* hook is. The country-tinged "Range War" is also deliciously catchy.

As the title suggests, there's lots of ballads too. "The Ballad (Denny & Jean)" and "Wailing Wall" are both lush, gorgeous, and heartbreaking. And "Hope I'm Around" is pure blue eyed soul with one of Todd's most soaring choruses.

There's some guitars to be found, don't worry. "Bleeding" is a catchy rocker, "Parole" is just rowdy fun, and "Chain Letter" is a tempo-shifting number that culminates in a euphoric "Hey Jude" like outro.

Other highlights include the majestic jazz sweep of "Boat on the Charles" and the sweet pop of "A Long Time, a Long Way to Go".

This is one of Todd's cleanest, most accessible albums. Mostly straightforward piano pop/ballads, a few rockers thrown in for good measure. Everything is beyond good, with no filler in sight. Essential Todd.
