Proud Mary:The Best of Ike & Tina Turner.......2007-04-10
Thie album has a lot of my favorite songs by Ike & Tina which I heard when they first came out. If you like the original versions of oldies this is a good one.
The Ike & Tina Turner Review, 1960-1975.......2007-02-02
Finding a good Ike & Tina compilation is no easy task. Not only did they record for multiple record labels, there are a plethora of low-budget and low-quality compilations available. This is one of the decent ones.
PROUD MARY: THE BEST OF IKE & TINA TURNER (from the "Legends of Rock n' Roll Series") consists of 23 songs recorded 1960-1975, in chronological order. Also included are two uncredited ("bonus") tracks; they are two commercials/radio ads for Ike & Tina. Disc packaged in black jewel case; total running time: 73:07. Booklet (in the form of a 6-pannel map-style fold-out sheet) includes a substantial small-font essay by Al Quaaglieri, one b&w photo of Ike & Tina, a photo of an assortment of original Ike & Tina album covers, and track information (including release dates and chart positions). Sound quality ranges from poor (on earlier recordings) to good; volume is low on all tracks.
This compilation seems to cover, with the exception of their Blue Thumb recordings, most of their career. Ike & Tina's labels included Sue, Modern/Kent, Warner Bros./Loma, Minit, Atlantic/Pompeii, Liberty, and United Artists. I do wish it included "Shake a Tail Feather".
The vocals of this Tina Turner are closer to that of LaVern Baker, Etta James, Lyn Collins, or Janis Joplin than to the pop/rock singer she would later become. She shouts and screams, often singing in a strained, almost forced-sounding, voice.
Notes: The version of "River Deep, Mountain High" is not the Phil Spector version; the version included is from the "Nutbush City Limits" LP. The voice heard on "It's Gonna Work Out Fine" and addressed as "Ikey" is not Ike Turner; it is Mickey of studio team Mickey & Sylvia. Ike's voice is heard on "Baby-Get It On", where he sings co-lead vocals. It is also interesting that the essayist mentions several times that the Ike & Tina story "would make a great movie" - this was a couple years before the 1993 bio-pic "What's Love Got to Do With It" was released.
What a mess.......2007-01-25
First the sound quality is poor - I had my stereo turned almost up to max and it was just loud enuf to hear.
Then there are the uncredited/unlisted "bonus tracks" - they are comercials/radio ads for Ike & Tina.
The version of "River Deep, Mountain High" is not the Phil Spector version.
Outstanding.......2005-08-26
This is a really good album. Anybody that hasn't heard this should listen to it.

Customer Reviews:
Unbelievably Good.......2001-06-07
I couldn't agree more with the previous reviewer, and have little to add, besides my agreement that this is an extraordinary album. Everyone who's heard it knows it as a masterpiece immediately. When I was purchasing it, the guy in the shop (sorry, Amazon) stopped and raved about it for five minutes or so before he'd let me take my new acquisition home. I've played it in my apartment and have had friends literally stop in their tracks, begging to know who's singing. There's also little more I can say about particular tracks themselves--John Fogarty's notes themselves shed considerable light. But while it's easy to tell which songs are genuine miracles, it's harder to tell just how Burke manages to get inside the lyrics and the melody to bring out meaning. On "That Lucky Ol' Sun," for example, I was prepared for the Louis Armstrong classic, full of joy and vim. Of course, when you actually listen to the lyrics, they're full of pathos and Burke brings this out without laying it all on too thick. Same with "In the Ghetto," a syrupy tune in Elvis's memorable but sappy rendition. But Burke sings it with restraint, and still has managed actually to make me cry several times listening to it. "Quinn the Eskimo" sounds far, far, FAR more revolutionary than Dylan--DYLAN!!--ever did. There is a fair sprinkling of Burke's trademark sad love ballads, but each is affecting in its own way. I love the uptempo tunes; not just "Generation of Revelations" but also "I'm Gonna Stay Right Here" will make you want to dance. The only song that to my ears falls seriously short of what it should be is, strange to say, Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come." For reasons unknown to me, Burke seeks to improve on Cooke's lyrics (instead of "I was born by a river, in a little tent," Burke substitutes the unwieldy "I was born by the river, in a little shack like a tent." What??) I suppose it's just that Cooke is unsurpassable in his own right, but the rest of the album is pure gold. Buy it, buy it, you won't regret it!!
A REVELATION; AN UNDISCOVERED CLASSIC; A MUST OWN.......2001-05-10
I first discovered Solomon Burke from Nick Honrby's novel "High Fidelity." In the novel, a Burke song "Why Can't We Stay Together" features prominently and since main character Rob has such a breadth of knowledge about music, I sought it out hoping to discover something new. This track can be found on Burke's "Definition Of Soul" album which has a 70's/Al Green kind of vibe to it. It's a swell song, and that album is quite good, worth owning, but it in no way prepared me for the power, and genius, and purity of purpose in "The Bell Sessions," which I've been listening to over and over and over for a few weeks now.
The back of the CD has liner notes by John Foggarty who writes that he feels Burke's recording of "Proud Mary" is definitive - that no one before had ever captured the true essence of the song as Burke did... and he's right. For the first time, I actually listened to, and heard the lyrics of this American classic. It's also the first version I've ever heard to completely erase my memory of Tina Turner's bravura rendition.
Burke has a preacher's background, so his sound is steeped in the Gospel tradition which seems the likely source for his greatest gifts - drama, pacing, and rhythm. The man knows how to build a song from the ground up. He starts slowly, gradually sucks you in, and then gives you the release you're begging for, while beautifully serving the lyric the whole way through. No song demonstrates this better than Track #6, "That Lucky Ol' Sun." In the liner notes Foggarty singles out this tune, and boy is he right. Discover this brilliant recording for yourself before some insurance company or The Gap puts it in an ad sure to give goose-bumps. After listening to Burke's version over and over, I was surprised to stumble on it in other parts of my record collection. Ray Charles does it. So does Johnny Cash on his newest "American Legend III." Obviously I'd heard the song before but I'd never heard the song. Classic doesn't even come close to describing it.
"The Bell Sessions" is made up of two distinct albums, and there's a decided shift in sound mid-way through from a stripped down, more acoustic sound to more fully produced tracks complete with enormous gospel chorus. However both styles work wonderfully - it's impossible to choose a preference. Among the fine tracks in the later half, "Generation of Revelations" will have you dancing around your living room.
Why Burke's work in this era isn't better known is a mystery to me. While you could never actually equal the thrill of discovering Aretha Franklin for the first time, listening to the "The Bell Sessions" will be its own kind of revelation. A classic.

Product Description
What a difference 35 years makes. Contrast these lyrics with, oh, any gangsta rap record of the last decade and a half:
Black pearl/ Pretty little girl/Let me put you up where you belong
Black pearl/ Precious little girl/You've been in the background much too long.
It was a kinder, gentler time, kids.
Checkmates, Ltd. were "discovered" by jazz diva Nancy Wilson, and for their A&M debut engaged the services of producer Phil Spector, who was best known (until recently, anyway) for early hits with the Ronettes, Crystals and others, and for his work on the Beatles' Let It Be. His patented Wall of Sound and back-to-mono ethic served the Checkmates, Ltd. well on their only smash hit, Black Pearl.
But dont stop there. They took Creedence Clearwater Revivals Proud Mary and souled it up, not quite in the Ike and Tina mold, but very credibly. And theres a gorgeous version of Spanish Harlem, which Spector had co-written with legendary tunesmith Jerry Leiber.
Rounding out the disc is a real nugget from the time capsule as Sonny Charles & Co. take on a medley from Hair; takes you right back to 1969.
Select Direct Releases feature original LP artwork reconfigured to an oversized heavy board minijacket wrapped with an iridescent stock, includes a translucent sleeve to protect the CD. Each jacket is gold foil stamped with a limited edition sequential number.

Checkmates Ltd.......2007-01-10
I bought this album as a vinyl LP when it first came out and as often happens I lost it at a party!. When I was trying to fill in the gaps in my CD collection I couldn't find this anywhere in the U.K. Finally tracked it down through Amazon and it is just as fresh and exciting a Spector production as I remembered it. Possibly the "Hair" medley not quite as fascinating now that my own hair has gone!!
Disappointing mono reissue.......2006-07-13
Still being in possession of my old 1969 German vinyl copy in spectacular stereo, I am rather dissappointed with this mono digital reissue. Hip-O should tell the customers what they actually get. Although the artwork is exemplary (thick paper sleeve), 2 stars only.

Album Description
2001 debut album for country/blues/rock act produced by Noel Gallagher & named after the song by Creedence Clearwater Revival.
Customer Reviews:
Strong and solid debut.......2005-06-14
Proud Mary, the band that derived their name from a Creedence Clearwater Revival song of the same name came into the UK music eye when Noel Gallagher (of Oasis fame) talked them up and signed them to his Sour Mash record label. This album was the only release to come from the short lived Sour Mash.
Playing live support slots for Oasis, Paul Weller and Ocean Colour Scene among a few the band had some good publicity through these said bands/artists plugging them... was it worthwhile?
Well "The Same Old Blues" is their debut album, which was produced by Noel Gallagher with Gem Archer (also of Oasis fame) yet sounds highly unlike anything that Oasis would record, which is very refreshing. The album is a British city bands slice of Americana, you'll even swear the singer isn't from the suburbs of Manchester. Kicking off with "Give A Little Love" the album drones in on an organ note to be brought to life by acoustic rhythm guitars and a country style electric guitar lick, the song itself is strong and has great lyrics to it, the chorus really is a sing-along part.
2nd song "Very Best Friend" was the single that pushed the album, sadly the vocal melody shares a similarity with The Rolling Stones "Salt Of The Earth" which Proud Mary even cover on the album. However this doesn't stop it being one of the albums highlights, a radio friendly tune in any American state indeed.
"Don't It All Look Ugly" begins with countryish harmonica and turns into a rockier sounding country song, it gives off the air of driving in the sunny summer with the window down and the volume up.
"All Good Things" is not to be confused with the Marc Teamaker song of the same name. This particular song is possibly the albums best song, it has brilliant instrumentation and touching lyrics, with a slide guitar solo again heavy in country tones that is simplicity in itself. This is followed by "Somewhere Down The Line" which sticks to the sound that the band have forged on this album. To some this song could be easily forgettable but it does have a lovely country steel guitar break/solo in the middle.
"Time On Our Hands" is one of those "could it have been a single?" songs, it surely would suit American radio stations without looking out of places. It has some great harmony vocals that lie underneath the whole song and just has this immense feel if achievement when you listen to it, you can't help but smile and tap your foot at this up-beat and feel good song. The steel guitar embellishments throughout also make it feel that much better too, and a great electric guitar solo too.
"Just For You" is not necessarily a love song, more a song of positive wishes upon somebody who you know. It could be for a lover who is leaving, or even a daughter. The song itself is more focused on lyrical content than anything else and is the albums most positive feeling song. Proud Mary's take on The Rolling Stones' "Salt Of The Earth" does not do the original any injustice at all, in fact it (to me) is much better than the Stones version... which is unusual. It is delivered with meaning that makes the listener think of it as a Proud Mary original.
"Same Old Blues" is the albums final song and simply acoustic guitars and sparse percussion with touches of steel guitar hiding underneath. A great way to end an album and a very good song that could have been written by any of Americas greatest. Makes you think if the band are REALLY English.
A great album that will go down as a lost classic, the band soon lost 2 of it's members and signed to a new label, leaving Sour Mash behind.
fire it up!.......2003-05-13
same old blues is an awesome song. Fire it up!!
Same Old Blues - What an album!.......2002-11-11
I first saw heard of Proud Mary at an Oasis gig in Finsbury Park. They were just great so i knew i had to get their album. After many hours of searching, i finally found it and was i disapointed with it? Was i hell! This is one of the few albums where i am able to sit through the whole thing and enjoy every single track! What a debut album. Roll on number two!
Rock & Roll is here to stay!!.......2001-07-23
I've heard about them through an Oasis fan web-site. I went out to buy it and I'm so greaful that i did. The music, the lyrics, everything is just great. It resembles a lot the music of the late 1960's. It's a shame (or maybe not) that people haven't really cought up to them. People aren't into great music anymore and it's sad to say it. English people as well as American people aren't really looking for and/or interested in good music anymore. They are not even giving it a chance. This record to me is a really really good one. Proud Mary, you rock and don't let anybody tell you don't. Long live Rock and Roll!!!!
A solid album.......2001-07-09
This is quite a good debut album, but the oasis influence is very obvious, so if you like oasis this is for you!
Also, I would say that some songs seem a little repetitive but for me the best track of the album is "all things great" followed by "very best friend".
Why buy? Because you like to chill to easy strumming rock!
