1 out of 5 stars Unfortunately, there's a serious problem with this recording.......2006-11-29

I just received this CD in the mail yesterday. The CD cover art is correct. The CD itself is labelled properly; however, the *music* on the CD is NOT from Edwin Starr, perhaps not even from Motown. The manufacturer really screwed up royally when making this CD. The actual singer is a female vocalist whom I do not recognize, singing songs about her class of students, four of whom are named Jordan. Other songs have little children singing along with the woman vocalist, and while their voices are pleasing enough, I wanted, and thought I had purchased, Edwin Starr singing WAR and TWENTY-FIVE MILES, along with his other hits, not something else entirely. Beware.

3 out of 5 stars Decent budget collection.......2005-04-30

Edwin Starr was a Motown artist who usually got other artist's leftovers, though in the case of his monster hit "War", that wasn't a bad thing. Starr's other big hit "25 Miles" is included here and remains one of my favorites by him. The song has a great stomping Stax like sound that still manages to sound very Motown like.

Other good offerings here include "Soul Master" a simmering, mid-tempo tune. He also gets to finally sing his own version of "Oh How Happy" (a major hit for Shades of Blue). In a way I like Shades of Blue's version a little better, but Starr certainly does a nice verson himself.

There are 2 duets with Blinky Williams one of Motown's lesser known singers. Their version of "You've Made Me So Very Happy" follows Brenda Holloway's version fairly closely and is pleasant. Their verson of "Ooh Baby Baby", however, just doesn't work for some reason.

There are several other Motown retreads. He does nice versions of "You Beat Me to the Punch" and Smokey Robinson's "Way Over There". Also included is a blistering version of "At Last I Found A Love" which was also done by Marvin Gaye.

Starr's version of "Cloud Nine" starts off pretty good but doesn't really go anywhere. The goofy chants of "up, up and away" near the end of the song don't help either.

I'd still reccomend this since it can be found pretty cheap and is a good introduction to Starr's talent. You may then want to check out a more extensive anthology if you like what you hear on this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Very Cool CD.......2000-11-05

Edwin Star is great. War is an all time classic. Twenty Five Miles is also great. The rest of the album may not be quite as good as these two songs, but it is still very good. You probably don't need any more by Edwin Star, but this CD is worth having. And it's so cheap!

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Disc.......2000-04-13

I always Dug Edwin Starr's Voice and this Set is Very Good.War is a Powerful Song to this day as is Twenty-Five Miles.Very Soulful&Full of Emotion.

4 out of 5 stars Finally found it!.......1999-12-10

We have been searching for Edwin Starr's 25 miles song for years with no luck. When I searched here at amazon, I was pleasantly surprised to find this cd at an amazing price with this song and so much more. The entire cd is very enjoyable!
