Put this music in and you can have your kids marching around the house in no time...what a blast!

4 out of 5 stars Album matches content hype.......2007-05-31

I intially bought this album for a few selections I had heard from Classical 102.1 (KDFC-FM). I was pleasantly surprised that the entire album has a very satisfying collection of the greatest marches. I am very pleased with this album, and would recommend it for anyone who likes a broad range of famous marches.

5 out of 5 stars Fun.......2007-01-21

This CD would make a great gift for anyone who enjoys marches. Some of the marches are popular, others are not. All are well-performed and can be enjoyed - LOUDLY!

5 out of 5 stars invigorating!.......2006-12-05

Great recordings of stirring music. I like to play it loud while my kids and I clean house. It makes it go by fast.

5 out of 5 stars Totally awesome!.......2005-03-27

My father was a Marine in the ETC, he told me stories about how they went floor to floor checking for bad guys humming this music. I think it is great music to listen to, I really like track 3, it says so much in the title alone. I hope everybody like this music as much as I do!

Album Description

Top of the British Classical Charts for 10 Weeks! Billboard Top Ten Classical Recording - December 2002! This album gathers together most of the carols I have composed over the years, plus a sprinkling of my arrangements of traditional carols, grouped to form a program which narrates, reflects upon, and celebrates the Christmas story. I have always enjoyed carols ever since I first sang them as a member of my school choir, and it was not long before I began to write carols of my own-in fact my first two published compositions were the Nativity Carol and the Shepherd's Pipe Carol. For any musician involved in choral music, Christmas is an especially joyous time, and I am indeed happy that it has played a part in my musical life for so many years- JOHN RUTTER

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Rutter Christmas Album.......2007-05-14

Great selection of music, and well presented. This is however older recordings that do not match the quality of Rutter's latest recordings such as the Te Deum or the Gloria.

5 out of 5 stars Unique and Beautiful!.......2007-03-09

John Rutter, and his beautiful music, is such a gift to the world. This unique Christmas CD is magnificent! Especially touching are two of Rutter's original carols, "Christmas Lullaby" and the joyful "Angels' Carol." The musical selections speak to the soul, helping the listener connect to emotions of joy, peace, faith, hope, and love. This is a worthy addition to your collection of Christmas CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Johh Rutter Chirstmas Album.......2007-02-19

If I were to choose only one Christmas album to ever own, this would be the one. John Rutter is an exceptional composer of religious music, with unusual harmonies. The music is difficult to sing, and because this is his own choir and he is directing it, the performance is flawless. Gives you goosebumps.

5 out of 5 stars Liked it enough to go through a lot of trouble to give it a review........2007-02-07

Great music by John Rutter: Great performance!

5 out of 5 stars John Rutter and Cambridge Singers.......2007-01-18

This is quintessential English cathedral music; beautifully sung. Reminds one of the English Christmas -- warm and serene -- that we've only experienced in our dreams!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, but one missing..........2007-03-07

These are fabulous marches played with huge amounts of zest, but one of Fiedler's best RCA marches - the Zacatecas March - was left out!!! Why??? There would have been plenty of room, and it seems to be available on a Japanese release - why not this one?

Otherwise, no hesitation at all.

4 out of 5 stars Simply a Fun Set of Marches.......2003-10-18

In the 5th grade, I tried out for Little League. My desire to play baseball was not rooted in any love for the sport. I thought my father wanted me to play a sport. I was so great at the tryouts; he said some memorable words to me. "Tim, I think you ought to stick with playing the clarinet." I am sure he was trying to spare me humiliation on the athletic field. Little did he know he was starting my love affair with music, a far greater gift.

Perhaps because I was in the school band, I gravitated toward marches, and this collection of marches conducted by Arthur Fielder was one of the first recordings I purchased (6th or 7th grade I believe). At the time (the mid 1970's) it was only available on LP. As soon as the CD was available, I purchased it for nostalgic reasons. This collection had many popular marches such as the Grand March from Aida, Stars and Stripes Forever, Pomp and Circumstance, as well as some lesser known marches. This was one of the collections that piqued my interest in orchestral music. Though the marches could probably best be termed "light classical," it was an introduction to more serious music. Many years later I used this same recording when I taught as background music during art or spelling lessons. Again, it served as an introduction to more serious music.

This is not a complicated set; it is simply a little jewel that is a joy to listen to and a fun addition to a music collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great Marching Music.......2000-11-14

Even though I am a Yankee I still love "Dixie." This is great music for pre-school children and those just entering school. I think it helps build character. I like this album.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......1999-05-23

I have had this tape for years and it just got torn, so I have to replace it immediately because my granddaughter, age 3, also loves it.

Amazon.com's Best of 2000

R.L. Burnside's background is pure Mississippi Delta--he was raised in the hill country and musically trained by quintessential bluesmen like Fred McDowell. But this record, like all his work, is infused with an adventurous spirit, haunted by eerie bits of electronic music and dark, despondent subject matter. The combination sounds irresistibly fresh, and scary as a hellhound on your trail. --Matthew Cooke

Amazon.com

Imagine a man sitting on a weathered front porch in a rocking chair, telling stories as the sun goes down. As first, they seem like the old-time tales any grandfather might tell, but as the sun sets, they take on a chilling, uneasy edge. That's the effect of R.L. Burnside's fifth album for Fat Possum; it's unnerving, at times downright spooky. Many will wonder if the digital effects featured on 1998's Come On In are here as well. Yes, they are, but less obviously. While electronics and DJ scratches are part of "Got Messed Up," their inclusion is subtle, like unearthly noises heard after dark a thousand miles from anywhere. Though there are some upbeat moments on this album, such as the uptempo "Miss Maybelle" and the satirical "Nothin' Man," for the most part this is the particular brand of Mississippi blues that Burnside and the lateJunior Kimbrough have done so well: mournful, even somewhat bleak, with every sense of hellhounds on the trail. Indeed, as the track "R.L.'s Story" indicates, Burnside's got his own demons; bonus tracks aside, this makes a perfect closing track, a last tale before the children are shooed off to bed. Forget Martha Stewart; this is Halloween music. --Genevieve Williams

4 out of 5 stars Wish I was In Heaven Sitting Down.......2007-02-26

I discovered RL Burnside thanks to Sirius Radio. I have purchased 2 of his CD's and have been pleasantly surprised with both. Great music.I plan to buy all or at least most of his CD's in the near future.

5 out of 5 stars Forget the Stones Listen to Burnside.......2006-02-24

When "Big Daddy" died last year, Mississippi and the nation lost another national treasure. Listening to this CD I'm amazed by the dedication to moving the blues foreward Burnside had, even in his final days. By contrast, I'm equally amazed by the lack of a sense of a new direction by the big name groups who are putting out watered down versions of the same things they have been doing for years. If you want a treat look into the Burnside Exploration, two of "Big Daddy's" grandsons, their blues power duo of guitar and drum was "doing it" before anyone ever heard of the White Stripes. I hope they can chart a path to the future as bright as their grandfather's.

4 out of 5 stars Why didn't I find him sooner?.......2004-05-19

RL Burnside is awesome! When I heard one of his songs on Accuradio.com, a streaming internet radio site and I was hooked. I thought, "I gotta get my hands on that CD!" When I arived home, I couldn't wait to play it. I cranked the volume up loud and had a lil' jam fest! I loved the way he incorporated hip-hop beats with his soulful blues sound! I will definitely be buying more of his albums in the future!

5 out of 5 stars I like it!.......2003-12-10

I love some of the sound effects that were added to this recording though Fat Possum added 3 bonus tracks done without remixing to try and satisfy everyone no doubt. "Chain of Fools" especially is a must-hear with the rapper effects. On my copy, however, "Black Mattie" (the first bonus track), starts over a minute into the track. Do I have a defective copy or is it supposed to be this way?

5 out of 5 stars A Really "UP" Blues Album (read the review).......2002-12-08

Stood absolutely still, riveted to attention when I first heard this CD. Next step was to find the sales clerk so I could buy it!! It is an understatement to say R.L. Burnside sings with emotion, this man KNOWS BLUES, he has LIVEDBLUES, and STILL HAS HOPE ... tinged with an Alabama accent, he sings with a southern drawl, full of the realities of life. The liner booklet says it best (& I quote): "The last genuine performer of raw Mississippi hill country sounds as well as cutting edge crossover artist the blues has had in the past 30 years." Honesty, depth, detail, raw emotions, earthy statements: it's all here & more! Great lyrics, great slide guitar playing, too. "Too Many Ups" one of the tracks, is a play on words: "You gotta look UP to the man ... too many ups, too many ups, too many upside down", "You gotta cover up", "You gotta catch up", "You gotta get paid up", "Too many upside downs". Some other favorites are, the title song, "Wish I was in Heaven Sittin' Down", "Hard Times", and "Chain of Fools".

Let the lyrics of "Nothin' Man" tell his story:
"I never had a chance ... it never was MY fault. You can't arrest me. I pay the rent. I never wanted to be a BAAAAD person. I wish my mama had loved me. You can't arrest me. It never was MY fault ... I never wanted to be a BAD person." The ambient music contrasts nicely with the words & lyrics, with a shadow of the underside of life - not far off from the truth. This is genuine, visceral music: FAT POSSUM RECORDS have provided us a vehicle to enjoy the music of this living legend of Mississippi blues. They have a great sense of humor, too. Inside the CD is a card to fill out with demographics, and a block of space, with the instructions: "trace your housekey here" YOU GOTTA LOVE 'EM!
Three "bonus" tracks are included: "Black Mattie" by Robert Balfour (a rather scarry piece of music & lyrics, too), "Pucker Up Buttercup" by Paul Jones, & my favorite of the three, "Laugh to Keep from Cryin'" written & sung by Burnside's adopted son, Kenny Brown, a great talent in his own right who learned & apprenticed with this MASTER OF MISSISSIPPI BLUES, THE LIVING LEGEND! 4 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-05-15

I recieved this CD from a friend, and immediately fell in love with it. The Afters are mostly pop, although they can rock out as well. The good songs and lyrics are consistent throughout the CD, and the fact that they are Christian are a plus. I was a tad dissapointed they didn't portray that aspect of their music more in their advertising, although it's eminent in the actual CD.

I recommend this to anyone and everyone who enjoys good pop/rock/punk music - especially Christians! I can't wait for their next CD.

4 out of 5 stars Typical music, but good words.......2007-03-01

This CD came into my hands a couple of years ago when it was just out. I skimmed through it, shrugged and passed it along to a friend. Now, as I've gotten it again and listened to it thoroughly, I still find myself mostly less than impressed. But there are some good things about the CD that I didn't catch the first time around.

The main thing with this CD is that the musical style is completely devoid of originality. Track after track plays through, each one sounding just like every mainstream rock band. The progressions all happen just as expected - there's the A-level uptempo song, the B-level uptempo song, the requisite funky track, the uplifting ballad, the sad sounding song, the synth-y slow number at the end. Verse one, chorus, verse two, chorus, bridge, chorus with a cool effect, chorus. The second verse of the uptempo numbers is always a little more rhythmic and acoustic-sounding with a catchier beat. There are a few well-placed minor dominant chords, the lead singer (admittedly good) tries to sound like Switchfoot, and all that stuff. It's very obvious that they've been influenced by all the mainstream Christian rock bands, and they won't be the ones to break out of any rut we might be in by now. It worked for lots of other bands - The Afters is just one too many. Bottom line: the musical style is so yawningly predictable you'll go right to sleep.

Now for the good things about it. The choruses are memorable, and unlike the music, the lyrics are not worn out. The words are uplifting and (for the most part) doctrinally sound. There's a lot of fresh imagery and insight that you'll be chewing on for a while. "The Way You Are," for example, draws breathless pictures of the paradox of the glorious God living in the hearts of his sinful creations. For this reason, the "I Wish We All Could Win" is worth listening to, if only for the edgy, trtuth-filled choruses that you'll be singing long after this CD is on a shelf.

One truly stellar song on this album is the ninth track, "Wait." I don't know why it's not at the end of the CD. (After "Wait" comes an anticlimactic finish from a so-so number, doctrinally a bit questionable, that really belongs in the middle of the album.) Not only does "Wait" break the musical mold with some pretty, soft classical-style guitar picking as the only backdrop for the vocals on the first verse and chorus, but the song itself is amazing. It's a faith and wonder-filled look forward to the mysteries of God's glory that await us when we join Him in heaven. This is a "quiet time song," for those of you who know that jargon :), and it's worth buying on iTunes even if you don't get the CD. It almost makes it worth buying the CD.

Bottom line on "I Wish We All Could Win": Don't buy it for the music. If you don't care about the stagnant musical arrangements, it might be a good CD to pick up because of the words. And if you're into The Afters' mild rock style, you'll like it despite the lack of any musical surprises. Do buy "Wait." That song is as uplifting as MercyMe's standard "I Can Only Imagine," and the words are more original and moving. "The Way You Are" is worth getting, too. As for the rest of the album, the choruses are sometimes catchy and the words are sometimes good. It'd at least be worth popping in your brother's copy for a listen.

2 out of 5 stars Sorry for being different but I think everyone here is hyping this up..........2007-02-03

...to be something it's not. The only tracks that I found catchy was their song from 8th and Ocean "Beautiful Love" and "You". The rest of the CD is forgetable and bored me. So stay away!!

Not recommended.

5 out of 5 stars G Funk Rated G.......2006-03-20

Skee-Lo lies somewhere between Coolio and Warren G, more towards the former. His lyrics are soft, his voice, softer. He makes fun of himself and rap in general. He never boasts about how many rims or women he has. And yet, "I Wish" works. The beats are tight. Skee-Lo produced my favorite g funk song of all time, Gaimboiz's "Money," and his production acumen shines here as well. On the other hand, the lyrics are sometimes hit or miss, but on the whole, they're funny, coherent and at times quite insightful. The single, "I Wish," may be a radio favorite, but it isn't even the best song on this album. Those who say Skee was a one-hit wonder don't know what they're talking about. The album is great throughout with has 2 classics, 4 near classics and the rest are decent.

The first classic is "Holdin' On," a romantic laid-back song with a smooth guitar backing. It is Skee-Lo's best lyrical effort by far with some really memorable lines: "Through the centuries of time heal the rhymes and unwind/Melodies flowin swift with the jazz fill/Kill the lights move in closer to your loved ones/ Baby hold em tight like tomorrow never comes..." Great stuff. The next classic and the best song on the album is "Crenshaw." Perfect for just rollin down the PCH, the 10 or whatever, it's a hit.

Other solid songs are, of course, the upbeat and hilarious "I Wish," where Skee-Lo admits his shortcomings (even when it comes to getting the ladies, a rarity for rap), the romantic "Come Back to Me," the jazzy east-coast sounding "This is How It Sounds," and the positive "Top of the Stairs." I'm not ashamed to say that in my opinion, this one's right up there with Regulate, Safe+Sound or any other mid 90s west coast album. All in all the beats stack up, and Skee-Lo's rapping approach, although very different, is a breath of fresh air. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A Worthwhile Purchase.......2005-12-12

More than just a one hit album, "I Wish" has enough pleasing and catchy tracks to merit a purchase. The production values are high, with some great backup vocals and instrumental work. In addition to "I Wish", "This Is How It Sounds" and "Crenshaw" are solid. Really, other than the last track, "I Wish (Street Mix Version)", this is an entertaining album across the board with some interesting turns of phrase. Skee Lo's lyrics move at a fast cadence but flow with the back tracks nicely and pause from time to time to permit room for the background singers to jump in smoothly.

5 out of 5 stars Crenshaw's own Skee-Lo!.......2005-11-08

Skee-Lo maybe not as rough-n-tough as other westcoast G's such as Ice Cube, MC Eiht, Spice 1, 40 Glocc, WC, B-Real, MC Ren, Cold 187um or Mack 10, though Skee-Lo is str8 off the streets of Crenshaw and has the potential to be a perfect rapper. Skee-Lo's I Wish album is tight, funny & has good G-funk to it! Superman & Crenshaw are tight songs, though I Wish has the coolest beat! This Is How It Sounds has a groovy G-funk, and a funny song is of course, The Hamburger Song.

Skee-Lo's best are *1, *2, 3, 4, 6, *9, *10, 11 & 12.

5 out of 5 stars I Wish That There Were More CD's Like This Today.......2005-08-26

Skee-Lo's debut album "I Wish" was a great debut and in comparison like Ahmad had the skills to really have some longevity but Skee-Lo got caught in the changing of the trends from the g-funk to the dancing east coast movement or whatever you want to call it. Skee-Lo is very unorthodox in his rhyming especially on the title track "I Wish" where you see a lot of rappers perpetrating to be something that there not, Skee-Lo let's us know that we can dream about being a baller or havin' that cadillac. My favorite track is "Top Of The Stairs" in which Skee-Lo talks about how no one want to be at the bottom of the pole in anything and how everybody wants to be at the top in anything. "Come Back To Me" is cool little song with a great beat with Skee-Lo telling the woman to come back instead of other rappers telling her to get on(it's very funny) but cool. Some other dope tracks on this CD of note: "Never Crossed My Mind"(nice beat), "Holding On"(great interpolation of Simply Red's version), "Crenshaw"(showing us how the home roll down Crenshaw Blvd on sunday night on the westside), & "The Burger Song"(pretty cool). Overall a great performance on this CD in which did not get that much airplay here in the crappy "Lou".

4 out of 5 stars A very creative pop rap album that most people will like a lot - skee-lo is GREAT! - 4.5 stars.......2005-07-21

I bought this CD purely on a whim - I love the hit "I Wish" and thought it might be funny to own the actual album. Boy was I in for a surprise! I would even argue that "I Wish" isn't the best song on the album! "Never Crossed My Mind" and "Superman" are much more interesting, personally. Anyways - Skee-Lo is one of the best rappers/lyricists of the old days - he has a LOT of charisma and charm about him, his beats are fantastic, and the lyrics are very clever and funny. Practically every song on the album is great, especially the first 3 songs. Honestly, rap as good as this makes me wish people nowadays would delve more into pop rap (I also just bought "He's The DJ, I'm The Rapper" by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince which is also a GREAT pop rap album and a must-own). This is the kind of rap you can play in front of your parents and not feel awkward about it. Another great thing about Skee-Lo is that he's willing to make fun of himself as he doesn't buy into the current trend of "tough" sounding rap artists - he's just very "real" and down to earth. It comes very close to being classic, but it's a little cheesy and not very pleasant to listen to consistently (compared to a LOT of other albums). However, you're still probably going to love it. If you like rap (unless you absolutely HATE "pop" rap) you're guaranteed to like this album.

This gem from 1991 shows Del tha Funkee Homosapien--the charismatic MC from respected Bay Area crew the Hieroglyphics--in a sharply promising debut, produced by Del, his cousin Ice Cube, and DJ Pooh. Unlike his famous cousin, Del has made a lyrical name for himself by not rhyming about the more violent aspects of inner-city life, instead taking a more laidback and humorous tack, though each rapper produces a stinging effectiveness in his lyrics. But even Cube has to make fun of himself, posing as a guest thug on a parody, "The Wacky World of Rapid Transit." The pair's penchant for creative, hard-hitting beats are certainly in alignment, as P-Funk gets referenced throughout, both in the album's title ("Brother George" = George Clinton) and in the raw grooves that snake in and out of the album. But above all, this is a prime chance to catch Del's mighty tongue unleashed in his most brazenly un-PC (and extremely fun) ode to black pride--check out "Pissin' on the Steps" or "Dark Skin Girls" for further evidence. --Tamara Palmer

5 out of 5 stars Trials and tribulations in the life of the everyman.......2007-08-05

In 1991, Del tha Funkee Homosapien released his debut album "I Wish My Brother George Was Here" to an unsuspecting audience becoming engrained in the West Coast's booming gangsta rap scene. At this point in hip hop, the West Coast was synonymous with the menacing hardcore rap of N.W.A., Compton's Most Wanted, and related acts, and no real alternative or underground existed. Del's debut eternally changed the face of West Coast hip hop, and definitely for the better. Del is Ice Cube's first cousin, but as rappers one would never confuse the two. Here, Del established himself as one of hip hop's most enticing MCs for his character and subject matter. Del comes across as someone everyone can relate to, rapping about everyday occurrances. On "Brother George," he raps about such day-to-day topics as public transportation, freeloading neighbors, and fear of gang activity rather than participation in it. The listener is sure to find him endearing because, for most folks, he's just like someone in their corner. Del lives a normal middle class life and observes his surroundings, and his observations are reflected in his often hilarious rap verses. The songs and album are exactly the right length, he puts across his point and supports it, but his delivery and style keep your attention the entire time, and you can never lose track of his verses. He was only 18 when he recorded it, but from a lyrical perspective, this might be the most effective, funny, and certainly groundbreaking performance of his legendary career.

From a musical standpoint, I love this album as well. The executive producers are Ice Cube and DJ Pooh. The music is the same upbeat, pure funk with heavy Parliament sampling as found on Ice Cube's concurrent album Death Certificate. The producers and sound are fairly identical, and the thick grooves are inescapable nearly all the time. But it's funny how these grooves have such a different effect with Del rapping over them. Cube made them sound ironic, but Del makes them just a laidback backdrop. It's actually pretty amazing to listen to "Brother George" and Death Certificate next to each other. Although both albums are 1991 classics, very similar musically, and performed by first cousins, they complement each other in an amazing way. While Ice Cube angrily and menacingly speaks of the serious problems facing the urban community, Del sits back and observes the lighter side of life. Cube makes some vocal appearances on this album, almost poking fun at himself. He voices the stick-up kids and men on the city bus that Del encounters. While "Brother George" is the first album from the highly influential Hieroglyphics crew, this doesn't have too many similarities to the sound that they would later be defined by. The jazzy, artistic approach that Del and Souls of Mischief would later embrace began after "Brother George," in both music and lyrics. Del is alternative here not because he has the flower-power menality of the Native Tongues on the East Coast, but simply because he offers a different style to what reigned West Coast hip hop at the time. "Brother George" is a hilarious, entertaining, musically fulfilling and all-too-true album that is still essential listening sixteen years later.

The album opens with the heavy funk of "What Is a Booty?," which serves as little more than a musical intro, opening the disc in grand fashion. This gives way to the classic single "Mistadobalina," which is anchored by an unforgettable vocal sample and simple loop, with clever and conversational raps to a certain individual. "The Wacky World of Rapid Transit" is Del at his finest. He recounts an unpleasant experience commuting on the city bus, from being late and encountering unpleasant riders to missing his stop. This is so funny because it's so normal that most rappers would never stray so far as to talk about such ordinary annoyances, and his performance is hilarious, with his running conversations and griping that rings so true. The musically rich "Pissin' on Your Steps" is another winner, where he issues very funny and lighthearted disses towards Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer, and some hip hop ideas he finds disagreeable, threatening "yellow showers." "Dark Skin Girls" is essential listening. Here, Del offers commentary on his preference in females, but he also presents a little Afrocentric attitude towards women who feel that only white is beautiful, all with a funny hook. On "Money for Sex" he voices his dislike towards the practice of prostitution, and some simple insight into his brain on "Ahonetwo, Ahonetwo." The second single, the catchy "Dr. Bombay," is excellent, and following the cool "Sunny Meadowz" comes one of my favorites "Sleepin' on My Couch." Del talks about his dilemmas with freeloading friends who try to live off him. He's "had it up to here with these lazy cats" but worries about offending them by kicking them out, a totally legitimate argument. The funk and his understandable emotion make this track a highlight. I also love "Hoodz Come in Dozens," where he expresses his frustration with gangsters and stick-up kids that rob him and keep him from living the life he deserves. "Same Ol' Thing" addresses the lack of variety and originality in hip hop with a little sucker-MC bashing, and the album closes with the brief "Ya Lil' Crumbsnatchers," a fitting conclusion.

Del would go on to an outstanding career as one of the leading figures in the West Coast underground, but his debut album remains one of his finest pieces. A masterpiece from start to finish, "Brother George" is as entertaining as any from this era and never gets old. If you haven't already, treat yourself to "I Wish My Brother George Was Here," a unique hip hop classic.

4 out of 5 stars I WISH MY COUSIN's were as funky as GEORGE!!.......2007-03-28

Some mc's you just know from the second that you hear them are going to become one of your favourites if they hopefully get the backing they deserve. Del was one of those that I instantly loved listening to. Throughout his debut the funk laced tracks perfectly inable him to showcase his amazing wordplay and witty sense of humour. Although his style is very much darker+sharper nowadays this is the perfect 1st glimpse at the fun side of Del. With help from his cousin, the legendary Ice Cube on the production side of things with his Boogiemen crew (Bobcat and Dj Pooh) the album is very funky with lovely Funkadelic/Parliment samples over hard head nodding beats. Del's playful lyricism is all over the tracks and his stories are both funny and insightful. He deals with issues in his community in a more funnier way than his cousin would do and puts a lovely twist on them such as tracks like "Wacky World Of Rapid Transit" (the state of the public transport), "Pissin' On Your Steps" (white cats in the hiphop industry, particularly Vanilla Ice), "Dark Skin Girls" (his preference in girls), "Sleepin' On My Couch" (story about friends taking liberties when he extends kindness), "Hoodz Come In Dozens" (about thugs being in every hood). The main standouts were the singles "Mistadobalina" (still amazing to this day) and "Dr. Bombay" aswell as "Wacky World Of Rapid Transit", "Ahonetwo, Ahonetwo", "Sunny Meadowz", "Sleepin' On My Couch", "Hoodz Come In Dozens" and "Same Ol' Thing". Excellent debut that is GUARANTEED to entertain.

5 out of 5 stars Even today it still has such an impact on me........2006-10-11

If you had to own at least one of his records this would have to be the one. While NO NEED FOR ALARM was my personal favorite, I will admit that overall this was better. Lyrical wise & Beat-wise he has never put out anything better. One of the best MC's from the Heiro-crew and one of my favorite MC's from the west coast in general. This LP will take you back to your B-Boy & B-Girl days and/or just help you remember again why it was you loved HIP HOP so much. Peace

4 out of 5 stars (9 out of 10) Del's Major Label Debut .......2006-08-18

Del Tha Funkee Homosapien hit the West Coast scene back in 1991, with his debut album I Wish My Brother George Was Here. Now to me, the whole concept behind this album came from left field, when I first heard this album. Probably because I've listened to all Del albums before this one, and on those albums he talks about dissing wack emcees and video games. On this album, he go the route, sort of like his cousin O'Shea Jackson (aka Ice Cube) went back in that time. Here his subject matter expanded to more other topics, like riding the bus on the song "The Wacky World Of Rapid Transit", and living in the hoods in the songs "Hoodz Come In Dozenz" and "Sleeping On My Couch". He would also show a taste of a preferance of dark skinned females over light skinned ones in the song "Dark Skinned Girls".

As for Ice Cube, his production (along with DJ Pooh) would play a standout part in this album. Like I said before, I heard all other Del albums before this one and they were mostly produced by members of the Hieroglyphics. When Cube brought some of his P-Funk into Del's album, I thought it didn't mix at first. But giving it a few more listens, it actually has a nice sounding fell to it. The songs "Mistadobalina" and "Doctor Bombay" (lead singles?) are part of the songs that would mix with the P-Funk style. Also Cube would play sort of a humorous paroody in the album, shouting out adlibs on some songs, like on "The Wacky World Of Rapid Transit" he says his car is in the shop and asks Del for a bus transfer. Or in the song "Dark Skinned Girls", Del says they're better than light skinned, and Cube shouts "I disagree with you homeboy!" telling Del to pick up a light skinned girl.

So overall this debut for Del was pretty nice. Del's rhymes mixed with some P-Funk would make this album more unique than any other album that he as recorded. If you're a fan of Del or love Ice Cube's production, I recommend this album to you. This would be the only album that he worked with Cube, before he would expand into more of the Hieroglyphics type albums. Argubuly his best album behind the more recent Deltron 3030.

Del tha Funkee Homosapien was doing underground hip hop before underground hip hop even existed. While Del is from the west coast, don't confuse his sound with other west coast hip hop. There are two things that separate him. First, while it's true that Del's cousin Ice Cube and DJ Pooh produced most of this album, Del was also in the control room influencing the sound of the album. Second, he didn't grow up in the So.Cal. hoods. He grew up in the Bay area, which I think was a major influence on his sound. This album bounces with fantastic beats, that have a little bit of P-Funk, combined with some extremely funky drum tracks. Two of the standout tracks, in my mind, are Mistadobalina and Pissin' on Your Steps. The former is known for being the first single off this album, and was responsible for putting Del's name in the names of hip hop heads. The latter is a fun little track that takes a couple of shots at the dancer/rappers of the early 90s. It includes the following line: "Ice is cool/But I can't stand Vanilla/ because he takes a style and tries to mock it/ Ain't nothin' personal G/ but I'm kinda into chocolate." All of the tracks have their own little moments, and this album is a hip hop classic. With this kind of talent, it's no wonder that Del is still out there doing his thing.

In these days of the crossover, it is hardly surprising to find two great opera singers making a foray into numbers from Broadway musicals by such composers as Cole Porter, Stephen Sondheim, and Andrew Lloyd Webber. What's remarkable is that they seem completely at home in this music. Both say they grew up listening to it, and indeed they approach these songs with no less care and seriousness than they'd give the most demanding operatic arias, and without a trace of condescension. However, their vocal, expressive, and interpretive styles are very different, both in the solos and the duets. Terfel projects assertive manliness, tender, intimate affection, and rollicking humor without external effects, using only his incomparably sonorous voice and powerful personality. His diction is impeccably clear, and though he has sometimes let his theatrical flair spill over into Schubert songs, he is the soul of simplicity here. This is in stark contrast to Fleming's tendency to exaggerate colors and dynamics and to turn sentiment into sentimentality. Moreover, though she claims a background as a jazz singer, her "crooning" sounds artificial and unnatural. However, her top notes, culminating in a triumphant high C at the end of the final number, ring gloriously. Her voice glows and shimmers with irresistible luster, soaring from seductive whispers to thrilling climaxes. The program features a great variety of love songs, and includes an antiwar protest (from Beautiful Game), a celebration of the American dream (from Ragtime), and a rousing fun piece (from The Music Man). Unfortunately, even the best songs are marred by thoroughly corny arrangements. Listeners will find their own favorites, but the real "stars" on this record are the two singers. --Edith Eisler

4 out of 5 stars Delightful .......2006-07-24

I truly enjoy Terfel's vocal talent and found it to be well suited for this genre. Fleming's impeccable soprano voice is a bit overpowering for this style of music. (I own this CD)

5 out of 5 stars A Master Class in Singing.......2006-06-20

This CD is a must-have for any person interested in the singing art. Ms. Fleming and Mr. Terfel gives new light to these Musical Theatre classics. Their fine vocalism in the musical theatre genre coupled with the depth of musicality and dramatic phrasing in each of the selections is truly a breath of fresh air. This recording is indeed a Master Class!

4 out of 5 stars Bryn is swell, but the bombast is annoying.......2006-05-03

Love Bryn Terfel, the finest bass-baritone in Opera. Love Renee Fleming's luscious soprano. But the arrangements! Kettle drums and bombast and bang, bang, bang! Once Renee starts swooping, things go downhill, with little redemption.

It starts out beautifully. "Not While I'm Around" has never sounded more intimate to me than Terfel's caressing pianissimo. Fleming's "Moonglow" is stunningly good. Terfel makes a medley out of "I Don't Remember You and Sometimes a Day Goes By" that makes you want to cheer, and Fleming does a lovely Sondheim medley as well. Bryn sings "Stars" and makes me long for him in Les Mis. And then...things tend to go downhill. The bombast takes over and gets to you - it overwhelms two of the biggest voices now recording. Then Fleming begins to swoop and scoop, over-coloring and often coming off as simply self-indulgent, reminding one of a kid who makes a point of putting his face in a camera shot.

I don't mind Bryn as Prof. Harold Hill - I frankly think the Welsh accent is kinda cute - and it doesn't bother me on "Wheels of Dream," either, but Fleming seems to have lost her mind on that great song, and rather than indulging her, it would have simply been better left off the album. Ditto "All that Wasted Time" which is pretty much unlistenable. Ms. Fleming needs to stop thinking she is a jazz singer.

The four stars are because this album does contain some truly GLORIOUS moments, particularly in the duets, and in Terfel's solo's which are warm and memorable. Without him, the kettle drums and Fleming's self-indulgence would have made the whole endeavor unbearable.

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Fine Crossover from Fleming and Terfel.......2006-04-18

Bryn Terfel and Renee Fleming are two of the most acclaimed opera singers of our day. But the musical theatre fan who puts on their Broadway CD, RENEE AND BRYN: UNDER THE STARS, expecting to hear a carelessly compiled hodgepodge of songs sung by voices ill-suited to them is in for a big surprise, beginning with the first phrases of the duo's warmly sung "Not While I'm Around" from SWEENEY TODD. True, these singers' beautiful voices have greater power and range than even the best of the Broadway stars', but this is an asset in these songs, most of which are either semi-operatic in nature or call (like THE MUSIC MAN's "Seventy-Six Trombones") for such an outsize personality as Terfel's. Fleming's sensuous and tonally gorgeous rendition of "Moonfall" from THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD can be placed among her very finest recordings, operatic and otherwise. And Terfel is ideally suited to both "Pretty Women" from SWEENEY TODD and "Stars" from LES MISERABLES; few if any Broadway Javerts could match the impact of his "This I swear by the stars!" Kander and Ebb's "I Don't Remember You" and "Sometimes a Day Goes By" make a perfect medley here, as do Sondheim's "I Wish I Could Forget You" and "Loving You" from PASSION. And though I don't care for the Andrew Lloyd Webber selections (ersatz Puccini) or the Jason Robert Brown one (which sounds too much like a pop song), Terfel and Fleming's singing of them is beyond reproach. The program ends with a bang: a rendition of "Wheels of a Dream" worthy to stand beside the now-classic one by Brian Stokes Mitchell and Audra McDonald on the original cast album of RAGTIME. Welshman Terfel's natural accent is noticeable here; but if one imagines him as, say, an Irish immigrant married to an African-American woman (as Fleming here sounds uncannily like McDonald or like Leontyne Price) his accent is appropriate and his voicing of the "bridge" section ("Oh Sarah, it's more than promises/Sarah, it must be true...") especially moving. Fleming's ecstatic final high note makes one want to applaud and cheer, both for the song and for the successful "crossover" effort.

5 out of 5 stars BREATHTAKING VOCAL MAGNIFICENCE~BRAVO!!!.......2004-10-11

So captivating are these incredible singers in the glorious live concert "Under The Stars" creating an unforgettable musical masterpiece of epic proportions that is so moving and great to watch that I ran out and purchased this studio recorded Compact Disc the next day!! The brilliance of the live broadcast carried over into the recording studio capturing Renee and Bryn at the peak of their incredible powers emotionally and vocally making them the most effective crossover artists since the great Barbara Cook who like Miss Cook sing with emotion that is accurate for this type of material which is usually not the case with classical voices. Renee Fleming sings with genuine passion and stirring emotions and her timing is absolutely flawless and this lady has alot of soul and the Torrie Zito arranged "Moonfall" is a stunning masterpiece that clearly illustrates this. A dazzling medley each show both singers in glorious peak form with Bryn splendid in the enchanting "I Don't Remember You/Sometimes A Day Goes By" and Renee spellbinding and haunting in the gorgeous "I Wish I Could Forget You/Loving You" which will make anyone who loves a great voice fall in love with this amazingly gifted singer. "Stars" features a commanding performance from Bryn that raises the roof and this is so refreshing and inspired in these musically tired times!!! This superb showcase is full of wonderfully exciting performances which are capable of making people feel again and this is what is sorely needed in music today and BRAVO to Bryn Terfel and the gorgeous Renee Fleming for achieving this with complete artistic brilliance. Captivating duets fill this wonderous collection and never have classics such as "Not While I'm Around" or "All I Ask Of You" been sung more brilliantly than here. Renee is magical with "Hello, Young Lovers" while Bryn is commanding and winning with "Pretty Women". Renee's stunning "All The Wasted Time" is a vocal and emotional tour-de-force that is like a wild roller-coaster ride that you won't want to end as this is one of the most riveting songs that I have ever heard from a Broadway score and this certainly must be the definitive performance of this great song. This lady can really really sing and this is some deeply serious singing~WOW!!! Gorgeous together again in the beautiful "How Could I Ever Know" which is hair-raising and wonderfully soulful and sophisicated together in Cole Porter's "So In Love". A grand finale by these two awesome vocal wonders lives up to expectations being a complete blowout vocal festival and they definitely do not disappoint here!!! "Wheels Of A Dream" is mesmerizing and soars to magnificent heights with Bryn and Renee in peak form singing to the skies and hitting notes that I swear I have never heard before~BRAVO!!!!!!! You are both magically inspired and simply put as good as it gets!!!! Highly recommended if you love two awesome vocal wonders at their absolute peak in a magnificent beautifully orchestrated setting!!! Thank you Bryn & Renee...

5 out of 5 stars George Burns- What A Treasure He Was !.......2007-07-11

It was a real pleasure to find this album had been released on CD. I have just listened to it and it is just as good as I remember my LP copy being. All the songs on this cd are fantastic and I highly recommend it.
I remember seeing George on television singing the title song and how amused he was that after all those years of people not wanting to here him sing that now they were applauding and asking for more. Of course it helped that the songs he was singing were great. When you here him sing 18 Again it will bring tears to your eyes.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music for a Romantic Evening.......2005-12-15

The CD insert design of the Set Your Life to Music series might suggest that this is a collection "Classical Lite." However, while this compilation provides some Liszt's most well-known music, these beautiful and deep pieces should not be mistaken for "easy listening." These are wonderful compositions by a great composer, performed by musicians of the highest caliber (especially Claudio Arrau). This is music to close your eyes to while listening to and enjoying every note and every nuance of the performances.

Most of the selections are performed by Claudio Arrau, one of the greatest pianists of the twentieth century, an acknowledged master of the Liszt repertoire and, furthermore, a pupil of one of Liszt's pupils. Arrau plays these selections with power, passion, sensitivity, and highly nuanced delicacy, depending on what a given passage calls for, as he takes the listener through the rising and falling tides of passion in Liszt's music.

The "non-Arrau" selections recorded by Misha Dichter, Wibi Soerjadi, and Zoltan Kocsis are also excellent. All the recorded selections, whether digital or analog, have very clear sound quality. Highly recommended, whether as an introduction to Lizst or to add to several other CDs of music by this great Romantic composer.

5 out of 5 stars perfect dramatic piano.......2004-05-28

Both Liszt and Arrau are at their apogee in this CD. This is one the few piano cd's I've heard where Liszt's passionate genius is both appropriately frighteningly strong and beautifully tender (as many of his contemporaries noted 150 years ago). Arrau, always thoughtful, and with his emphasis on touch and color, and delicacy, penetrates to the heart of these sometimes breathtakingly orchestral piano sounds. This is lush arch-romantic piano with a huge nuanced sound, and a constant emotional ebb and flow (and sound volume) as powerful than any other composer of that tempestuous era I have heard. The cd is very clearly recorded with excellent dynamics. Every selection is strong and well chosen and the cd sets a very consistent brooding romantic mood. The best introduction to (and still my favorite) Liszt.

5 out of 5 stars Arguably, one of the best classical pianists ever........2001-08-12

As soon as I heard the piano solo, Liebestraume, I immediately purchased this cd particularly because it contains some of the greatest piano pieces ever composed. During Liszt's lifetime, audiences were very appreciative of his talent and ability to express his emotions through the use of his piano. Influenced by Chopin, Franz Liszt ultimately achieved high status as a composer with the ability to play spectacular classical music. Some of the songs included possess titles about nature, and in one of the songs, the piano is played so brilliantly that it feels as if you're actually listening to fountains. Lovers of classical music should purchase this remarkable disc. And best of all, at a low price, this is a great bargain.
