Dawn Robinson's vocals are so much a part of R&B that it's hard to believe Dawn marks her solo debut. A former member of '90s girl group En Vogue and neo-soul-funk act Lucy Pearl (not to mention a former Dr. Dre collaborator), Robinson possesses an instantly recognizable sweet and salty soprano. That voice is potent enough that you'll be compelled to pay attention, even if the songs aren't nearly as intriguing as the singer. Working with relatively unknown producers and songwriters (and collaborating on several tracks), Robinson is eclectic and often highly engaging. She shines on cuts like the sassy and sure-footed anthem "Fed Up," the undulating and jazzy "Set It Off," and the album's strongest cut, the hushed acoustic ballad "Get Up Again." That track, laced with an emotive mournfulness, may not be autobiographical, but its directness offers a real glimpse into Robinson's heart and soul. Had that rawness and intensity been present throughout, this CD would have been great instead of good. --Amy Linden

3 out of 5 stars DAWN DEBUT IS OKAY.......2004-03-19

When I first bought this album, I didn't really listen to it that much. After time past, I placed it in my CD player one day and listen to it. This CD is really good. It could've been a little bit better but I still give her credit. I always thought that she had the strongest voice out of the whole En Vogue group and I noticed that when she left, the group went down hill. The only problem I see with this album is that it wasn't promoted enough. I don't even think she did a video. I hate it when a damn good CD drops and there's no promotion behind it. I guess you can thank her record label for that. Overall, this album is good.

3 out of 5 stars DAWN'S SOLO DEBUT IS OKAY.......2003-12-23

Wow!! She did it. Dawn finally released her solo album after all these years. That is one of the reasons why she left En Vogue. Part of the deal while being a member of En Vogue is that she can release a solo album just like Terry Ellis did. I think this album is okay. Although she has a very powerful voice and I always thought she was the best singer of En Vogue, I think that some of her songs could've been a lot better not that they're bad. I heard on the last track how she's talking about En Vogue and Lucy Pearl. It's a funny thing because these days, you don't hear anything about Dawn, En Vogue or Lucy Pearl. The last I heard, Dawn was on tour doing a play with Johnny Gill. Overall, Dawn is talented singer and her album is okay.

5 out of 5 stars heart touching.......2003-11-13

Dawn's solo release album is very heart touching especially the song "Our Child." That would have to be the most heart touching song on this CD. "Get Up Again" is very inspiring and is a great song of inspirtation for anyone who's feeling down or depressed. I always listen to that song whenever I'm feeling low, and afterwards I somehow find the ability to go on. I don't know what it is exactly, but I guess it's a compassion, an empathy in Dawn's voice that says: "it's okay, i've been there too, you'll survive." Sometimes I feel she's the only friend I have. My only complaint is that I wish she would've included the lyrics to her songs in the CD booklet. Nevertheless, this is a great album and a total must have for any music lover or fan of En Vogue! I highly recommend this.

3 out of 5 stars Has it DAWNed on you?.......2003-10-05

I was a MINOR follower of En Vogue when Dawn Robinson was still with the group... I wasn't like a number 1 fan, but I thought she was a nice talent in the realm of both songwriting, and singing.. she has a nice voice. However, she holds back on this debut release just a little bit. The CD does have some nice highlights ("Set It Off", "Still", "Get Up Again", & "Our Child", just to name a few) but it also has it's bad moments (the bad-call for a first single, "Envious", the boring "I Don't Know Why", and the just plain uncalled-for "You Will Never").. However, I wouldn't actually take it as far as to saying that this is a bad release, because whether or not some of the songs may not be up to par for me, I still like Dawn, and I still think she is a true talent. She goes from man-bashing (the pretty catchy "Fed Up") to bashing her former band-mates ("You Will Never"), and from sharing sobbishly-sad stories ("Get Up Again", the true highlight of this release, as well as my favorite track) to just telling it like it is ("The Meaning of A Woman").. So you definately have to give it up for her, whether or not you want to, and whether you are a fan or not. For you guys who liked En Vogue and also enjoyed Terry Ellis's debut back in 1995 ("Southern Girl"), you might want to check this one out just to see how you like it. But if this isn't your kind of music, your best bet is to just stick with your kind this time around.

All in all, I give it a 3.. not so bad, not so great, but hopefully she will come back later and release an incredible CD, where she is able to shine, both vocally and lyrically.

2 out of 5 stars Decent does not a diva make........2003-07-22

When Dawn was in En Vogue she was my favorite member, and as expected when she left the group they did not last much longer. Sadly though neither did Dawn. Us Dawn fans waited and waited and waited for a solo album, but all we got were a few singles here and there. When this album finally came out I bought it that day, and had mixed feelings. Here was, as People magazine put it, the 'funkiest diva of them all' at the time of her peak, with an album that was not that great, was about four years too late, and had a list of unknown producers. The first song, 'set it off' is excellent, and by far the best song. After that though the album seems to bore. The slow songs are dreadful, the up beat songs sound like they are trying too hard to be hip. In all fairness I would have given this album more stars if Dawn were a new up and coming singer, however she is not, the public had high expectations for this album and the album did not live up to them. It did not sell well and it tarnished some of Dawn's die hard fan's hopes. Sorry Dawn, put out another album with your sass and style and maybe a little 'en vogue' touch and you will then have a hot album that fans and critics both love. This album should just be seen as a sorry mistake.

5 out of 5 stars Lucy Pearl, En Vogue? Who?.......2001-11-24

This single is one of the most promising tracks of 2001, and is likely to be the start of something huge in 2002 for the former En Vogue & Lucy Pearl vocalist. Refreshing and honest in a time filled with manufactured pop singers.

3 out of 5 stars Could have done with a remix or two.......2002-05-28

"Envious" is a great song. It's a shame most of the world chose to ignore it. But then again, tons and tons of great songs go unnoticed all the time so this doesn't come as a surprise. Dawn's been around long enough to know exactly how this fickle industry works. And with this single, she delivers the goods. This isn't just another R&B track. It's a track with lots of meaning for the artist herself. It's a great track with tight beats and damn fine vocals to make anyone envious. Dawn's strong vocals aren't too apparent here because this ain't a ballad. The disappointing thing about this CD is the poor tracklisting. Could have done with a remix or two instead of just the acappella and the instrumental version of the song to back it up. Personally, this is a great track, if you like it, buy it because the album is a rather disappointment.

Miri Ben-Ari, 'The Hip-Hop Violinist', has been making a lot of noise lately. The Israeli-born virtuoso wrote, produced, arranged and performed all strings on Kanye West's & John Legend's smash debut album The College Dropout and Get Lifted, plus has been touring the country with West, wowing crowds at sold-out shows in New York, Chicago and LA. Recently, Miri has been West's special guest in several major television appearances, including The Late Show with David Letterman and the Super Bowl. Kanye has returned the favor in kind, lending production and rhyming work to several tracks on Miri's forthcoming debut. Nice Tunes.
