Funk 101, for sure. We may never totally understand how James Brown took his music from the earlier styles of R&B he assimilated to the feverish development of the harder, more modern sound of records ranging from "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" to "Say It Loud-I'm Black and I'm Proud," but here's another chance for us to listen in awe. In addition to long versions of the period's cornerstones, Foundations of Funk offers an alternate take of "Cold Sweat" and live versions of "Licking Stick-Licking Stick" and "Mother Popcorn"--the latter achieving a meltdown that puts the Brown band on the same side of the street as Funhouse-era Stooges. I was around during this time period, and saw James Brown live because he was my mother's favorite live performer. I was surprised, however, at the number of filler songs in this collection. Some remastering would have been nice, too. Standout songs that held up for me were "Out of Sight," "Money Won't Change You," "Cold Sweat," and "I Don't Want Nobody to Give Me Nothing." Even though the instrumentals on "Say It Loud" sound a little stark now, I remember how I felt when I heard the song over the radio back then. It was a bold message and messenger, truly uplifting for its time.

Truly a fine compilation and very nicely packaged. I like the CD being in the sturdy(!) slip-case.

The song choice is great. The Live Cuts are Killer. I have no regrets with this purchase!

Of the many JB comps I own this is my 2nd favorite (In A Jungle Groove is the first!).

Ever pay for a James Brown album and within five minutes of getting it out of the wrapper you realized you were had? Ever heard James accompanied by a Casio keyboard recorded in a broom closet? Must be bad needing a quick album release to satisy some recording contract agreement James made to get a few bucks.

Well this is NOT one of THOSE.

This is simply a fabulous collection of greatest recording. It demonstrates why James was considered a genius. And his band was so powerful they could blow down walls. And make you dance, Man. And smile. And get funky RIGHT NOW.

A must for your next soul funk dance party. Put it on and EVERYBODY will get up off a that thing and bust a move. I guarantee it.

The familiar psychedelic wah-tones fade in betwixt dual -feminine vocals that always leave me asking "This is Alternative from the 90's?" Originally recorded at Beale Studios in Memphis, TN and released in 1994 on EastWest (Atlantic) Records, the group enjoyed a brief run on MTV with "Put The Blame On Me", the title track for the album. With forcefulness and southern soul Gwin Spencer and Susan Dunn's vocals dance arpeggios around each other in perfect interplay. Between the Hammond Organ and the few downtempo shuffle tunes, the album is a polished and upbeat record. Popular music in 1994 began to shun the throwback Rock bands in favor of simpler music, which would explain their fade from the charts. The jugular guitars and flute solo made me think briefly of Canned Heat, who is a poignant influence on "Brand New Bag" along with James Brown, and Janis Joplin. Check your pulse if you're not screaming along to the tunes after the first run-through. All content copyright www.maximumink.com.

We borrowed this CD from a local guitarist friend and it should carry a warning! It literally tore our system down. I'm behind the times considering it was released in '94 but if this band still rocks like this I gotta find 'em, although all attempts drew blank so far. The songs here are strong and wonderfully performed. Janis Joplin must be an influence on the vocalist and the energy of it all leaps out.To do justice to this album there really should be more stars and the band must be one of the USA's best kept secrets. Where are they now?

This CD is incredible -- everyone here is exactly right, if you're in the mood for crank it up rocking, this is the CD. Vocals are a little softer than Janis (maybe half as much whiskey and cigarettes), and this absolutely smokes. I got it from a friend recently and haven't stopped listening yet. It rocks, there's some acoustic slide blues, there's some djangly pop, this is one of the best CDs I've ever heard.

      This was the first Christmas CD I ever bought. I found it in a store on sale for half price, on the day after I got my first CD player for Christmas. It feature the "best" songs from James Brown's three Christmas albums. The very best song is the first one, the classic "Santa Claus Go Straight To the Ghetto". Nothing else is quite as good as that, although there are some other good ones, like the bluesy "Santa Claus, Santa Claus", the nonsensical "Go Power at Christmas Time", the heartfelt "Let's Make Christmas Mean Something This Year" and the funky "T*t For Tat". There are also a number of songs that aren't particularly good. JB doesn't fare too well with Christmas standards, like "The Christmas Song", "Please Come Home For Christmas" and "Merry Christmas Baby". Still, if you are a fan of Soul Brother Number One, you will probably enjoy this CD.

      i'm a huge james brown fan and this album was bought specifically for me by a colleague at a work gift exchange years ago.

      it's great in only that way that older rhino releases are ... complete, correct and well mixed. the true gem that's on here is "santa claus go straight to the ghetto." if that doesn't say christmas, in a very weird and exact james brown way, i don't know what does.

      it's worth it for the cover alone -- unfortunately it's not shown here, but james in full santa gear is something to behold (do a image google search on this disc and i'm sure you'll see it).

      the only disc you should conisder instead of this is "Christmas Collection: 20th Century Masters [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED]," which is actually just a re-master of "james brown's funky christmas." the sound is a tad better, but you don't get the great image and this is a better bargain bin choice.

      there's no better way to celebrate a white christmas.

      Not much to be said here. Tracklisting has been posted so i'll only say what i think. The Thunderpuss Club Mix is one of the best tracks the Thunderpuss duo has done. It's fast, it's fierce, it's anthemic - I LOVE IT - i'm sure it ruled the floors for many weeks if not months. If you haven't heard the mix u can now. Buy it used (i did!). You won't be sorry.

      Yes, this version is terrible. Occasional snippets of the song are recognizable before it falls into generic techno beats for most of the track. To correct a previous review, the original is from a band simply called "Pigbag", and if you don't have the original vinyl, it can be found (still?) on the Canadian compilation "Hardest Hits Vol. 2" (1992) SPG Music Productions Ltd. Stick with the original. It is AMAZING. DISCLAIMER: I'm not a biased Pigbag fan. This track is the only one I know by them. A simple comparison between the two leaves Thunderpuss in the dust. Don't waste your time/money on this one, people!

      Papa's got a brand new pig bag was originally released in 1982 by the band Papa's Got A Brand New Pig Bag. If any one is as lucky as me and still has the original from that time they would soon realise how this remix destroys a classic instrumental track.
