The best from The Best Singer and Tenor of all time........2007-04-24
This is a beautiful collection of songs. Once again it exhibits the depth and breath of Mario Lanza's vocal abilities. It is wonderful to hear him sing such lovely melodies. It is also splendid to read Derek Mannering's explanation of how Lanza interpreted each song with his heart and soul. For anyone who is a fan of Mario's, this collection is worth the price.
Gorgeous.......2001-11-25
Most of these songs are from the popular radio show he did in the 50's, when his voice was at it's best. I own numerous Lanza cds, and I can never get enough of his glorious voice and these beautiful songs. A lot of them can be found on other albums, it's true, but the first song is a previously unreleased gem, which was a big selling point with me. How could I pass this up? Also a lot of the songs are different versions from others I have, so this album was definately a must have, for me. I think that anyone who is a true Lanza fan, will love this cd.
Another great CD by the greatest singer of all time!!!.......2001-07-17
Derek Mannering has done it again in releasing yet another first class CD collection by the "Voice of the Century", Mario Lanza. Most of the items on this album have been previously released either on vinyl, CD, or both, but this collection is worth having nonetheless. The one item here never before released is the beautifully sung "All the Things You Are" and did Lanza ever serve this one up in first class fashion. The singing here is extremely fresh and vibrant. A recording that I don't believe has been on CD before is the "You Are Love", from Showboat, presented here (different from the performance on the definitive "Don't Forget Me" C). Lanza shows us here a truly passionate and ardent Gaylord Revenal. No other singer sang this song as well. "On the Street Where You Live" is given a very virile and beautiful rendition by Lanza. I don't know where or when I have ever heard the song "Where or When" sung this well. The rest of the selections on this offering are terrific as well, but can be found on other collections. This collection is worth owning, if for no other reason than for the four selections previously mentioned. The sound quality is excellent, giving the Mario Lanza voice the benefit of its full presence. Lanza definitely had a true flair for the popular song and Broadway ballad, as well as the ringing operatic aria, no doubt about it. If you're looking for a collection of classic standard and Broadway tunes performed with the mastery and excellence that only Mario Lanza could deliver, this CD is the one for you. Highly recommended!!!

King Of Ill Lines!!! (Rating: 10 out of 10- -5 stars).......2007-01-25
When it comes to punchlines, Chino XL probably has enough to fill a warehouse. Listening to Chino's album "I Told You So", he spits with a vingance and holds nothing back when rhyming. He sort of reminds me of an in-your-face Lord Finesse type lyricist. His lyrics are garunteed to grab any listener's attention. If you ever sit down and and listen to his words, you'll be amazed on how talented he was -"I leave n****z confused like homeless dudes on house arrest"- that took a second to get to me, but I laughed when I understood what he was saying.
Even the skits are funny in sort of a way. There is one where he talks trash to his audience while on stage, and there is one where some girl calls in about a date with Chino. You have to hear them, becasue they are funny.
I really can't think of anything that is bad about this album. There are a few skippable tracks that I find at the beginning of the CD like "What You Got". Other than that, I find this album near flawless. I find Chino's flow to be excellent. Don't believe some idiot who say he rhymes off beat, because I can assure you that he doesn't. I don't know about the situations with his record company, but their issues really kept his hands tied for a while with this album, but I guess they allowed this album to be redistributed. I got my copy for less than 10 bucks, and I see some being sold for around that price. I believe the most you should pay is $20 for this here.
Side Note: I don't know if anyone else has this problem, but the linear notes and the back cover has the tracks incorrectly listed. Amazon has the correct track order and if you put it into your computer, the correct track order will show.

(4+half) Crowning moment for the lyrical messiah........2006-08-25
Considering i have all 3 of Chino's albums i'd say that this is definitely his most consistent. On the production side of things NICK-WIZ performs the perfect soundbombs for Chino to reek havoc on. Lyrically Chino is at his pinnacle dropping some of the sharpest, funniest, wittiest punchlines of his career. The beats could be described as soul shuddering or bone crunching at best and Chino's rhymes are jaw dropping at the very least. Its so rare to get an album where nearly all the joints are top drawer quality. The only bad points about the album was that there was too many skits, which i hate on hiphop albums, and the 2 tracks "Sorry" and "Chianardo Di Caprio" which were somewhat weak in comparison to the others. The remainding songs were just hiphop bliss. Standouts were "What You Got", "Last Laugh" (the best verses B-Real has EVER spit!!), "Chino XL", "You Don't Want It", "Beef", "Don't Say A Word", "I Told You So" and "It's My World". If you love sharp lyricists then you really cant do without this in your collection. COP IT!!!
another classic.......2006-06-08
Dude's first cd was amazing as is his second.
Nunca was perhaps the best on here. I'm sorry but to the idiotic Big L fan to say chino doesn't end on beat is a lie.
Dude is always on beat even if the flow isn't a rhythim you like.
And unlike Big L chino has punches metas and word play that happen to be on topic. thats because chino is an actual song writer and big L was just a lame battle mc who couldn't do a real album worth buying.
Eminem aint on the same level as chino, chino's world stretches beyond himself and his punches aren't borderline retarded.
Get It Right!!!!!.......2006-05-09
Chino is NOT a West Coast MC. He was born in The Bronx and grew up in New Jersey. After he got a deal then he moved to Cali. get it right everybody, the West has never been about lyrics to me, it is about feelings and making people feel pain and identify with their struggle, Chino doesnt do that, he makes fun of people!!!!!!!!! This album is great though. His punchlines are the best today and he doesnt hold any diss back.
LISTEN' TO HIS FIRST ALBUM THEN YOU'LL BE A BELIEVER!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-09-15
AN WORD-SMITH TO SAY THE LEAST.ONE OF THE WEST COAST TRUE ORINGINAL B-BOYS TO DISPLAY HIS TALENTS ON MIC DEVICES AND SHINES LIKE SUNNY L.A.TRUE DATT!!!!!!!

Liked it better than the debut.......2005-07-21
Sparkle's second album was far better than the debut. There's a 70s feel on most of the ballads, especially The Ghetto, where Sparkle recalls her past beginnings. The rest of the album is solid. Sometimes the songs are a little too similar, given that Steve Huff produced this album and Keke Wyatt and Avant's albums at the same time. Probably lots of late nights, drinking loads of coffee, making 30 to 40 songs and doing that thump-thump-thump thing with the drums and keyboards in that studio for Huff. A lot of Huff's songs are identical with that thump-thump-thump sound on the ballads, very beat heavy over conservative ballad music. But Huff has a smooth, mellow sound that matches well with Sparkle. She sings with so much precision and vocal talent throughout this album.
Not Exactly Sparkling.......2001-05-02
Sparkle's TOLD YOU SO is a follow-up to her eponymous 1998 album, which was dominated by R.Kelly. The album had a hit single entitled "Be Careful" (feat.R.Kelly), and the album flew to No.4 on Billboard 200 instantly. Now Sparkle switched to Motown, with different writers (she even writes some of her own stuff). TOLD YOU SO has certain musical appeal and is an undeserved flop (I didn't even see it debut in the Top 100 of Billboard). But Sparkle's new album sounds cliched, undercooked, and not aggressive enough, considering I hear nothing to make it deserve a "Parental Advisory." Parental Advisory for what??? "It's A Fact" is a catchy, and haunting first single. And I would've suggested playing the breath-taking "When A Woman's Heart Is Broken," the booty-shaking "Good Life"-remix feat. Memphis Bleek (I actually would've put that on the album instead), and the wedding-worthy "Everything" all on the radio. Despite those high points, she also falls into bland territory with the turn-off "All I Want," the so-so "Somebody Else," and the disastrously mushy "Lovin A Man." Grade: B-

She Told You So!.......2001-01-13
Sparkle's latest work is really great. "Told You So" is a great album, and I just wish that she was getting more airplay with this album. I don't think it's been promoted good, and I'm just so glad that I happened to get it for a Christmas present. It's a great CD. I really recommend it to anyone who likes R&B that's actually good.
weak.......2000-12-29
when i first heard sparkle, she was with r. kelly on "be careful", and like most people I rushed to the store expecting to get a phat cd. i couldn't have been more wrong. she always drops an amazing first single, and then the rest of the album is just terrible. in this case, sparkle doesn't show any maturity at all, in fact its almost like she takes a few steps back.
the first single, "it's a fact", didn't do much for the album since the promotion and release were very quiet and didn't raise that much of a craze like her first album did. the song is tight though but also very misleading. just letting you know now, expect nothing else like this ANYWHERE on this record.
"don't know why", "loving a man" & "the ghetto" lead the way for the rest of the tottally wack tracks to follow. with weak lyrics, and not the good of a voice she needs to switch up her game plan. "all i want" is one sorry excuse for a ballad, and i'm not even gonna get started on "games", "everything", "when a woman's heart is broken" & "good life".
sparkle needs to get her facts straight if she is ever gonna generate heat on the charts, because making albums like shes been then its a fact that she won't be an outstanding force in music any time soon, and i hate to say it but i TOLD YOU SO.

LONG-AWAITED CD.......2007-02-21
I still haven't received this one although it's on the way. I can hardly wait because I haven't listened to this one since -99 when I sold my LP collection.
What I do remember is Omar's raw and crispy vocal-technique. Just listen to the more uptempo swampmusic numbers like "Magic Man", "Pocket To Nowhere" and the title track. This is also manifested on the slow blues "Ice Cold Woman".
However, the song that really caught my attention when I bought the album back in the mid-eighties was the opening track "Border Girl". Very cathy and should please anybody even though they're only a little bit into rock'n'roll.

A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19
This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

Customer Reviews:
The Count is going strong again.......2001-09-17
This Pablo recording from 1975 represents a new revitilised Basie
band. After some years of having almost not recorded at all, due to problems with stable personnel, William Basie at this time has found a new drummer, Butch Miles and a new arranger, Bill Holman, who was asked to write charts especially for this project. Because of this, these recordings are a pleasant breakaway from a long tradition of using the Sammy Nestico charts over and over again. And what a talent this Basie band has in its ranks: Sonny Cohn and the sparkling Bobby Mitchell provide the trumpet solos, in the trombone department you`ll
hear the one and only plunger specialist Al Grey, supported by
Curtis Fuller and Bill Hughes. Of course the star soloist of the band is still there playing with the reeds: Jimmy Forrest, with his fat, gutty attack on the tenorsax.
Besides the brilliant new scores on this album, Holman arranged two famous standards for Basie, `Something To Live For` and
`Too Close For Comfort`. In listening to them, you get almost the feeling that Basie`s third Atomic period had started. Definitely a Basie for your collection at home.

Customer Reviews:
Well done, but overly mannered........2005-07-11
The singing is excellent, and some of the pieces are quite good, but after a while you get tired of this genre.
