Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
Prince Rogers Nelson is the most talented musician of his generation, but he has often seemed strangely out of sync with his own time. Performing under the single name of Prince, he mixed European American and African American musics like few others in history. Yet his extravagant obsessions with sex, religion, and dance grooves made him a stranger in the strange land of rock & roll, while his melodic genius and instrumental virtuosity made him the odd man out in an R&B world dominated by programmed rhythm machines. Perhaps that's why Nelson abandoned the stage name of Prince and adopted an unpronounceable symbol as his nom de musique. The Gold Experience is Nelson's first full-length album released under his symbol moniker and it's his strongest work under any name since 1990's Graffiti Bridge. Less a new direction than a return to the hard-edged funk of 1987-88's Sign o' the Times and The Black Album, The Gold Experience is better than either of those albums because this time the stripped-down rhythms have been bolstered by lots of guitar. In other words, the most effective integrationist in pop music has married deep-groove funk to in-your-face rock guitar--without sacrificing his usual gift for melody and harmony. Nelson has long been one of the best guitarists around, but because his licks were usually buried deep in his thickened arrangements, his chops weren't always obvious. In the more open arrangements here, they're pretty hard to miss. With this raw music come some rather raw lyrics, counterbalanced by a genuinely romantic ballad and two gospel-rooted songs lamenting the current state of American society. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars Goose Bumps!.......2007-05-09

When I first heard all the chaos surrounding the Warner thing, I was worried it would affect him and the music. What was I thinking?! The man can't be stopped! Gold is one of his most original albums. I love the NPG Operator, he is so innovative and does not hesitate to try something outlandish and new. He has no fear when it comes to the creativity of his music. I was lucky enough to get a copy of a rare live version of Endorphine Machine, it was even more funky than the CD version! Eye Hate U is my favorite on this album and is currently pumping in my CD player right now. He always knows the right things to say. Everything he touches turns to GOLD! "Right now I hate you so much I wanna make love until you see..."

3 out of 5 stars Two Incredible Singles.......2007-04-05

I know this won't be helpful to many people, but to make this as simple as I possibly can, I bought this CD for two songs. P Control, one of the few Prince tracks that work as "rap", and The Most Beautiful Girl in the World, one of the best Prince singles ever. I ripped those two into my MP3 player and promptly shelved the CD, as there wasn't anything else on it that grabbed me. This release apparently wasn't commercially successful - I see it's been taken out of production - but the high ratings I see here make me think I might be missing something. Time to dust the Gold Experience off and give it another spin....?

5 out of 5 stars Pure Gold !!!.......2007-03-03

I don't own a lot of Prince cds .. but I sure can tell that if you want the best of what Prince can do ... you must have this album.

It's the kind of album that you press play a second time after the 18th tranck had finish playing.

I swear ... Is that Great !!!

5 out of 5 stars Prince Or...Sorry O(-> Fans Will Be In For A Shock.......2006-06-07

'The Gold Experience' was recorded during Prince's bitter feaud with Warner Brothers,in which he chose to begin referring to himself as O(-> (or the Artist Formerly Known As Prince). This was the first release credited only to that symbol, the first popular artist to refer to himself as something other then a written name. That indulgance aside this CD is a return to form from the rather lacking Prince albums just before. The same modern elements of hip-hop and harder rock are still there but more focused and well performed, not tacked on.The album itself plays like a computer program with every other of the 18 cuts being the voice of the NPG operator explaining the 'feel' of the upcoming song.'P Control' is one of the better examples of Prince being able to successfully integrate rap and hard funk and since both are presented in tough, driving fasion it works.Like much of the material here it is very politcal-in terms of music, race, sex and social status. This ends up basically being one half rock and another half funk.Of course "Endorphinmachine","Shh","We March" and the fabulous "Dolphin" are great rock songs-some poppier the some harder edged.Prince pulls some crazy guitar solo's and riffs out of left fiend and really commits himself to the music entirely.Of the funky tunes the ripping "319","Now",the haunting "Shy" and the back to basics "Billy Jack Bitch" all assault you with rhythm. The three most powerful songs are two fabulous epics-the rock hysteria of "Gold" and the soulful "Eye Hate U".The next one (and the biggest hit from the album) is the catchy ballad "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World"-it is very gentle, humane and beautiful-the flowering of a fully mature Prince. No matter what he's playing-rock,funk,pop,hip hop or some unique hybrid in between Prince is always Prince and always has his own distinct style to go on in each style he chooses to explore. And although often neglected this was the beginning of a whole new beginning for O(-> and his music. There were many times where quality slipped, such as right after this but it never last too long. This deserves to be revisited.

I'm not referring to the reviewers, I'm referring to the sellers on the Amazon Marketplace.

A new Gold Experience cd costs 58.00-66.00.

A used Gold Experience cd costs 20.00 AT LEAST.

These folks know this album is out of print therefore are purposely driving the cost up. Capitalism at its worst.

I want this cd, but I'll be darned if I spend an arm and leg for it. I can wait. I can wait for some record company to come to their senses and put this back in print.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Crap Ever Thought Up!.......2007-05-16

This show and anything related to it - and the ones that follwed in the footsteps of it, are the reason kids today have no morals or respect for authority.
who ever came up with and everyone who had anything to do with getting it put on the air and published, ought to feel ashamed of themselves for their negative contribution to the social degregation of our children, who are now almost grown and ready to live what they learned1

5 out of 5 stars heh heh heh huh huh huh........this friggin RULES!.......2006-02-19

Beavis and Butt-Head changed my life. They taught me that it is o.k. to be completely stupid. I found this at the store for 5 friggin dollars and it is totally worth more than that. The songs are awesome, but the B&B segments are painfully funny. If you come across this, BUY IT!!! STUPIDITY RULES!!!!

5 out of 5 stars BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD CAN STILL PISS OFF MOM!.......2005-10-03

THIS IS A ROCK MASTERPEICE! HEh heh heh heh huh huh. SERIOUS! You can't get this new anymore? What gives? A bunch of great songs are only available on this CD.
Plus its got BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD on it! Why they ever left TV is beyond me. I used to love watching videos with them on Mtv. I think pop culture lived a little in the nineties due to these guys, it's dead again. But we shall remember it HERE with this rockpacked collection of ROCK!
NIRVANA hate myself and want to die, very awesome.
ANTHRAX doing Beastie Boys Looking down the barrel of a gun (rips)
CHER and BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD sing I GOT YOU BABE
AEROSMITH does DEUCES ARE WILD, a very cool outake from their PUMP album. Now don't forget MEGADETH, CHILI PEPPERS, WHITE ZOMBIE (before he was just Rob Zombie) and stuff you may not recognize like JACKYL and if you are younger than 17 you may never heard of RUN DMC.
I bought this thing when I was 10 years old and pissed my mom off immensly, you can find this used. DO THE SAME!

5 out of 5 stars Beavis and Butt-head Experience.......2004-12-21

This is a really good album. It rules, it rules!! Any Beavis n Butt-head fan will love it. In between each of the songs they have funny clips of Beavis and Butt-head talking, including them meeting Anthrax and Run DMC. Here are ratings of the tracks.

2. Anthrax- Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun 4/5
3. Beavis and Butt-head- Come to Butt-head 5/5 (FUNNY!)
4. Megadeth- 99 Ways to Die 5/5
5. Run DMC- Bounce 3/5
6. Aerosmith- Deuces are Wild 10000000/5 (the greatest song I've ever heard!!!!)
7. White Zombie- I am Hell 4/5
8. Primus- Poetry and Prose 4/5 (Funny)
9. Red Hot Chili Peppers- Search and Destroy 4/5
10.Sir Mix-Alot- Monsta Mack 5/5
11.Jackyl- Mental Masturbation 5/5
12.Cher with Beavis and Butt-head- I Got You Babe 5/5 (HILARIOUS!!!!!)

5 out of 5 stars The audiophile CD.......2004-09-03

This cd has some excellent tracks. The sheffield line has been known for it's quality recordings. I am an audiophile and compete in Car Audio SQ competitions. This particular CD is my favourite on which to test my system for tuning. I listen to this quite often and find the tracks soothing while being able to be played back with awesome quality... Track 1 is my favourite track, it is great and the tune is constantly on my mind. Track 7 is great as well...... GET THIS CD!!!

5 out of 5 stars best compilation of top recorders ever.......2000-02-06

I CAN ONLY DESCRIBE THIS CD AS INCREDIBLE.

WHILE THE MUSIC IS GOOD, THE RECORDINGS ARE SO GOOD, THAT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO DECIDE WHICH ONE SHOULD BE THE STANDARD TO MEASSURE AGAINST THE OTHERS.

WHAT YOU CAN BE SURE IS THAT ON MY OPINION THEY ARE AS CLOSE TO PERFECT AS A REAL SESSION CAN BE.

IT WILL FOR SURE OUTPERFORM YOUR CURRENT REFERENCE RECORDING.

THE LAST TRACK, SUMMERTIME, IS RECORDED ON THE SAME QUALITY AS THE OTHERS, BUT THE PERFORMANCE OF THE PLAYERS ON THIS TRIO VERSION DESERVE TO BE INCLUDED ON THE COMPILATION .

IT IS TRULLY A PERFECT AUDIOPHILE DREAM.

YOU BLEW AWAY THE COMPETITION SHEFFIELD. GOOD JOB.
