Customer Reviews:
Seminal box set for soul & R&B fans.......2004-10-26
It's amazing how many hidden gems are mixed in amongst the more well-known songs in this fantastic 9 disc box set. From Darrell Banks' "Just Because Your Love is Gone" to the Newcomers' "Open Up Your Heart (and Let Me In), this is simply a treasure-trove of soul / r&b delights. If you like Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, the Dramatics, etc, you will love this set....good for dancin', good for romancin'!
Full of Great Stuff.......1999-08-25
Different from the material on the first Stax box - soul music was getting more of a standard rock/dance beat underneath of it, and the music was layed down through multi-tracking rather than through live arrangements. But it's still the voice of soul. There is a wealth of fine music on here. If you choose to buy this, I don't think you'll be sorry. There's a lot of pickings on here. Basically, this is a wonderful archival package.
It is THE collector's box set...amazing! I love it!.......1998-12-21
This box set is something I have coveted ever since we had it at the radio station I used to D.J. a soul show on. It has EVERY single you could want. All of the STAX sound is represented...funky dance numbers, ballads, and grooves that make your butt jump up and shake. It's an amazing resource. The booklet that comes with it is fantastic and super-informative. It's also a great place to look for samples, or find the originals that have been sampled from in a lot of Hip-Hop songs. For instance...Lynda Lyndell singing "What A Man", which was sampled (practically covered) by En Vogue and Salt 'N Peppa a few years ago. The originals are often better than the remakes!! Soul purists who can't get enough, Memphis music lovers, Hip Hop musicians, this is a box set for you...like you wouldn't believe! (And it's only one in a series of three amazing STAX box sets.)
A good complication of Stax soul from the 70es........1998-09-09
If you know the first Stax box and like the music from Jakie Brown movie, you will not regret bying this one. This is a nice complication of old soul musicians wich we dont realy remember in the 90es. Many of the numbers you will recognice, because they have been recorded as cover vertions later on. Therefore it does'nt seem to be old music, but just the original recording of some of the music we hear in the radio.
This is one of the titles you learn to enjoy, the more times you hear it the more you will enjoy it.
A good collection of soul, you dont get tired of because there are 200+ numbers to chose from.

More of the Best from the Undisputed Mecca of Soul.......2002-12-20
You would think that Volume 2 would be nothing but worthless leftovers from Volume 1 but nosiree! Top of the Stax Volume 2 proves that Memphis's immortal Stax Record company produced enough GREAT soul hits to fill not one but two volumes, nay even a third volume (hint! hint!). The Rise and Fall of Stax was the Rise and Fall of Great R&B, and gems like this exist to remind us how great our music once was.

Live, rough and raw.......1999-01-18
I saw Otis live in New Orleans in 1966. This album comes close to that "live" experience. It was recorded with Otis's "road band". It is live, rough and raw. And you can hear his down-to-earth friendliness shine through. Not a "must-have, but it is a "must hear"!

Album Description
Recorded live in Japan in 1978 with Hi's studio rhythm team of The Hodges Brothers and drummer Howard Grimes, along with a horn section. This is the first time that the entirety of this lengthy live album has appeared on CD, and features some songs from Wright's pre-Hi career.
Customer Reviews:
O.V. Wright with Hi Rhythm.......2001-01-13
Unlike a lot of the live concerts by the great soul singers, say Al Green's "Live in Tokyo" for example, this set features the same band that made the records: Hi Rhythm, from Hi records in Memphis, TN. The sound is good but not great (as is often the case, the horns get buried a little bit). Overall, it is somewhat of a disappointment; the live material doesn't add a lot to the studio versions of these tunes. Still, for fans of O.V. Wright it's a must-have.
O.V. Live! How good does it get?.......2000-07-11
As the companion disc to the Complete O.V. on Hi Records: In the Studio, this is the superior of the two.
While hearing O.V.'s studio cuts are interesting, hearing him live is heavenly. The tracks are a mix of cuts from different concerts recorded in 1979. The only bad thing is it's not long enough. I want more! More!

Customer Reviews:
Lost and Found Classics.......2005-06-08
This album was quite an education for me since I knew of only a small handful of the more famous artists such as Ben E. King, Otis Redding, Arthur Conley and Irma Thomas. I would come to be more familiar with Doris Duke, Eddie and Ernie and Wendy Rene through my purchases of further volumes in the Deep Soul Treasures collection. It was a real ear opener to hear the haunting, original version of "Go Now" by Bessie Banks after being raised on the hit,pop version by The Moody Blues. Another pleasant discovery was The Soul Children who were musical protegees of Isaac Hayes, who along with his songwriting partner David Porter, wrote three of the 25 songs on this album. Arthur("Sweet Soul Music") Conley, himself the protegee of Otis Redding sings Otis' beautiful, pleading "Let Nothing Seperate Us". George Perkins' plaintive, yearning "Cryin'In The Streets" made the hair on my arms stand up. This is one moving, not to mention, catchy song. Melody is not often the strong point of Deep Soul, as the focus is on the simple arrangements and Soulful vocals, but a lot of these songs will take up permanent residence in your brain after a few listens. One of my favorites is the closing song by the obscure Lisa Richards, whose angelic vocals on "Let's Take a Chance", will make you weep with joy. It is such pure, simple, ear candy, that I can't believe it wasn't a hit. It is a real testimony to the talent of even the most obscure artist here, that they can be mixed in with Otis Redding and Carla Thomas and Johnny Adams and blend in so seamlessly. There was such an abundance of great Soul and R&B in the sixties and seventies that we are still catching up with it, and thanks to compilations like this one, we will.
not as good as volume 1.......2003-08-16
Deep Soul Treasures Volume 1 blew me away. This one is not quite as good, although there are some nice tracks on it.
well worth the wait!mercy!.......2002-05-22
mercy!4 times i've tryed to get these dave godin's deep soul treasures n finally got them, let me precisely make strong emphasis on these collections, that every man woman n child n beast should be able to hear these fabulous recordings, amen!!i sat all by myself when i first played them n i cried, wept, screamed n moaned, with emotional outbursts, especially the most beautiful recording of all time,go now the soul stirring, miss bessie banks n anyone but you, the breathtaking miss barbara west, those two alone is well worth the weight in gold!!keep on keeping on, more more more more, thank you:j.h.
ignore the previous review.......2001-03-26
the previous reviewer would be well advised to stick to otis/sam & dave best of compilations.
but for those with a wider ranging appreciation for deep southern soul, this is a tasty collection. a step down from volume 1, and perhaps not quite as good as volume 3, this set is nevertheless brilliant.
there are plenty of great non-hit singles from the stax/volt catalogue. if you have the first stax singles box, most of these will be superfluous, but it's great to hear them in a new context. particularly strong are the soul children and ruby johnson tracks. but then, the wendy rene and carla thomas tracks aren't too shabby either.
another great track is the classic toussaint mccall slow burner, "nothing takes the place of you." if you don't have this elsewhere, it's inclusion alone justifies the purchase of this cd.
"losin' boy" by eddie giles is another winner.
of course, everyone will have their favorites, and with 25 tracks, there is a veritable treasure trove to pick from. go ahead and buy all three volumes today.
DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY........2001-03-09
the glowing reviews for this and the rest of the godin series are false . this has 1 or 2 half-decent cuts and the rest of the tracks were rare 'cause they're lousy. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY.

Polygram's "Funk Essentials" series told the history band by band: a two-CD set by Parliament, single-CD sets by Kool & the Gang, Cameo, the Bar-Kays and Con Funk Shun, plus an extra CD of odds and ends. Rhino's five-volume In Yo' Face: The History of Funk, by contrast, tells the story chronologically, from James Brown's 1970 "Sex Machine" to Zapp's 1980 "More Ounce to the Bounce." The Polygram approach gives you a more in-depth look at such key acts as Parliament and Kool & the Gang, but the Rhino strategy allows a broader overview. Rhino allows for the broadest possible definition of funk, including such questionable acts as Natalie Cole, George Duke, George McCrae, and the Dramatics. On the other hand, the series showcases such founding fathers as James Brown, Sly Stone, and the Isley Brothers, plus a dozen assorted P-Funk tracks. --Geoffrey Himes

Customer Reviews:
Southern Fried Soul at it's Hottest!.......2004-02-16
This and Vol 1 covers EVERYTHING that Ann ever recorded. To put it quite simply, Ann Peebles is the best of the southern style soul singers. This is as much down to the awesome music (provided by the same backing band that Al Green used) of the Hi Records house band as it is to the lady herself.
There is enough funk on here to please fans of James Brown, enough soul to please fans of 60's Aretha Franklin.
She doesnt quite hit the heights that those 2 reached, perhaps, but Ann is her own woman.
The music is consistently stuck in a soul/funk/ style, but that is part of the appeal.
Ann stayed pretty faithfully to the Hi Records formula and that was not a bad thing. There are a few hints at disco-ish grooves on her second to last album, but some of her strongest soul material on here comes from the awesome 'Handwriting Is On The Wall' album. Despite the fact that it actually came out in 78, it was considered to be retro even then, sounding much rawer and soulful than most music from this time.
Yes the last 2 or 3 singles she did were awful, but there are less than 5/6 weak tracks here. It is as solid as volume 1 and together with that double CD, amount to some of my favourite soul music.
Other people who are recommended if you like this; Ann Sexton, Candi Staton 'Fame Years', Denise La Salle, Betty Wright, Millie Jackson, Betty(e) Lavette.... there are many more, but none better!

heavy grooves.......2006-05-09
I wish they had part one of this here as well (even though I already own it). . . Heck - I'd like to see more of these . . .Maybe I just need to hunt down the artists , and buy their albumns
And I agree with the reviewer below me - there is no disco here . . I think the first reviewer left his review for the wrong product . . . this cd should not be confused with "pure funk" - which is disco .
Anyway , there are a few really good tracks here , then there are a few so-so tracks. . .but for the price - I would definitely recommend this to funk and soul fans .
way funky.......2005-08-05
these are funk instrumentals by unknown artists. there is no disco, big stars, or hot hits, as stated in the review below. it is indeed good music for a party soundtrack, however. very groovy and old-school. lots of solo organs and saxes.
Not bad for something to play at a party.......1998-08-29
This cd is a mix of good and bad disco. It has all the trendy hot disco songs from the seventys that you love along with all the bubble gum disco. If you are having a party at your house there a definetly songs on this album that will get your groove going an overall good chose from somene that likes a wide variety of music.
