Has neo-soul been around long enough to already have throwbacks? The ostentatiously named Musiq Soulchild seems to think so. The vibe on his debut album, Aijuswanaseing, feels an awful lot like the one D'Angelo first got folks all hot and sweaty with (way back in 1995, with the now-classic Brown Sugar). Musiq even liberally borrows from "Brown Sugar" on "L Is Gone," when he croons, "Skin caramel complexion/Lips chocolate brown" (D's version says "Skin is caramel with those cocoa eyes"). The 23-year-old newcomer is smart enough to have a couple of his musical predecessor's partners in his crew, like producer James Poyser and bassist Pino Palladino. They get some nice, laid-back grooves going on the sassy opening track, "Girl Next Door," and on "Speechless" with its sly, funky Stevie Wonder-style bounce. Despite their best intentions, however, the Philly native never manages to generate any real heat. He has a perfectly adequate croon (part Stevie, part Eric Benet, and of course, part D'Angelo), but it's his lack of lyrical prowess that does him in. Tossing off verbal gems such as "So I could be like Michael Jackson and enjoy myself / Cause what I want to do is make a tuna melt" and "Your body's banging like a 400SE" with complete sincerity, Musiq lets his ulterior motives show, which sabotages the sensitive-ladies'-man image he's obviously trying to cultivate. He leaves us hoping that he'll let someone else write the words for him next time. --Sylvia W. Chan

ANOTHER IMPORTANT SOUL ARTIST.......2007-06-23
THIS GENTS DEBUT ALBUM WAS REFRESHING! I MADE ME REALIZE THAT THERE IS HOPE AFTER ALL FOR SOUL MUSIC. EVERY SONG ON THIS CD WAS WELL PRODUCED,
HIS VOCAL STYLE I HAD TO GET USE TO,BUT LYRICS OVERSHADOWED THAT.I HOPE THE MUSIQ CONTINUES TO MATURE AND GIVE US MORE OF WHAT HE HAS TO OFFER.
ANOTHER IMPORTANT SOUL ARTIST WE NEED TO PAY ATTENTION TO.......NOT TIMELESS YET! BUT HAS POTENTIAL.
Musiq Soulchild- Aijuswanaseing.......2007-06-21
Well this album can be described in one word, BORING! Now i know for a fact i am not goinig to get alot of helpful votes on this one because for some reason people loved this album, even though it is truly boring. And it has nothing to do with Mr.Soulchild cause he did prove he has a great but very unique voice. He can do alot better than this, there is only like two maybe three songs at best on this album that i consider to be keepers. One of the being the mid tempo "Me & U" which sounds like it could be a Darkchild beat, this song he shows his vocals and the song actually has meaning. The other song being "Marygoround" which is very similar to "Me & U" in the way they sound. They just have totally different song meanings. The one is about love, while the other is about how she plays him. See the rest of this album is just boring nothing jumps out. I will admit Musiq does shine through a few of those boring songs with his great vocals but still doesnt save the album. Overall it is not a complete and utter failure for a debut album, but it is still not worth having unless you are a huge Musiq fan.

REFRESHING..........2007-06-10
This cd is good, still his best. Intelligent and creative song writing with songs like Love, Me and U, Girl Next Door. He needs to find some of that to have an album equal or better than this one some day. A must Have
Soo distinctive but with some amazing songs! Buy it!.......2007-03-30
Bought this one for Girl Next Door... but all of the other songs on the album are superb... if I was to pick out a few favourites it would be Just Friends (which just makes me smile as it's just a guy wanting to get to know a girl) and Love (this one just blows me away every single time!) No doubt this should be a single!
Mary Go Round is very hypnotic and catchy... and Poparatzi is a heartfelt plea to discuss through an argument (down to earth and realistic - but with a romantic edge - love it!)
Musiq has such range and depth to his vocals - beautiful voice to listen to! Highly recommended!
Dynamite.......2007-03-29
A native from Phiadelphia, I was able to see him perform at the Five Spot (Black Lily) and each time he tore down the walls. Each song on this album shows that he was hungry and aware of what he was able to bring to the music scene.

BLOWN AWAY LIKE ME?.......2001-11-28
OK, well, I have to say, I listened to this on the total basis that Just Friends (Sunny) was a hot song, which said everything I ever wanted to say, without me having to say it (if you got all that!!!) When I got it in the cd player, I skipped to that song, listened to it about 20 times in succession, sang crazily off key, then switched back to number one and started to take note. He're what I got:
Girl Next Door: Nice. Grew on my for the lyrics and that feeling of deja vu. C'mon, we all remeber that one person, who we knew when younger, and now older, wish we could get with, right?6.5/10
You and Me: I think I must have played this over and over again, so I'm a little sick of it, but hey! It's beautiful. 7/10
Just Friends(Sunny): Nothing more to be said. Gorgeous
Mary Go Round :originally one of the tracks that was on first forward the first coupla times, simply because it seemed diff. to anything I'd heard on the album. When I took the time to really listen, it blew me away too. Stand out track. 8/10
143: OK, OK
< hold. Is there anyone who can say anything negative on this song? I can't. I wont even rate it. Thought it was unbelievable. Well, I heard that Musiq didn't feel this song was as good as it could have been. I refuse to believe that. This song is better each time I isten to it. (I'm not saying that lightly) Sigh...makes you realise what loves supposed to be. One of the two firm favourites.
Love: Who hasn't heard this song yet ? you're missing out. Beautiful lyrics, sincerely sang, and from the heart. A simple love song, which deserves to do wel, (and which is at this moment)8/10
My Girl: This was nice. overal. Didn't stand out for me, but was very solid, and a break from the power songs. Light, breezy, and I can just imagine the scenario he tries to conjure up...7/10
Seveteen: This grew on me too. Didn't feel much for it, but I ike the way he sounds on this track. Solid 7/10
L' is Gone: Oooh, he sounds like so many other people on this song, and...does it suit him? well, thats up for debate. Again, a solid performance
Speechess: Right. I really am. Beautiful. 9/10
Poparatzi: Nice after the first couple of listens, before which no impression was really being made on me. I liked it as a whole though, if only for the whole concept. 7/10
Settle for my Love: Everyone gives this great reviews. Didn't do much for me, and is really the only song I 'put up' with. It's o-kaaay. 6/10
You Be Alright: This one was good too. Nothing much to say though. (tired of typing ..lol)7/10
BONUS- Aimwitue: I seriously feel like the people who got the origina disc are missing out. If I were to buy this album again if it got lost for some strange reason, it would be for this one song. Beginning, middle and end, its the perfect song, and it touches every part of me! If thats not saying much!!!!!

EXCELLENT! MUST have!.......2001-04-12
This is the best album I have ever heard to date. Musiq sets his own style and his voice is absolutely soothing. In this day in age when most of the songs out there have little or no meaning, Musiq Soulchild is REFRESHING. This is the first cd, of the many I have owned, where I don't have to skip through songs to get to the "good ones." E-X-C-E-L-L-E-N-T!
Musiq Soulchild.......2001-02-17
I have this album, (not the import though) and I think it's a beautiful album especially "143", "You and Me","Mary Go Round", and "Love". I hope that his album does well, cause it truly is a terrific album
