A brave effort at cramming one disc full of Temptations classics, The Ultimate Collection nevertheless makes a couple of puzzling choices. Why, for instance, include "Error of Our Ways," a very minor mid-'90s hit, and ignore "Beauty Is Only Skin Deep" or "I Could Never Love Another (After Loving You)," both number ones from their classic period? Still, for the price, it's hard to argue with. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Sound is not as good as I had hoped for, but it has everything I wanted on it.......2007-07-05

I dislike any title "Ultimate" because ultimate really is in the ear of the listener, but this CD had everything I wanted from the Temptations on it. It only lost one star because it's touchy working in my MacIntosh and the sound quality in general is not as good as I hoped for.

2 out of 5 stars Poor .......2007-06-01

I'm only a passing fan of The Temps, but wanted at least a "Greatest Hits" CD in my collection so they would have some representation.

While (most) of the songs I know and like are on the disc, the sound quality is abysmal... unless you want to hear it like it was on that mono transister radio you had back in 1971. As far as I can tell, there was no remastering done whatsoever. A disappointment.

1 out of 5 stars hearing is believing.......2007-05-12

customers lose faith in vendors when they deliver defective merchandise. The CD would not perform in any player used. Vendors must earn a customer's trust by supplying reliable quality in the first place or standing up with ready replacements when they don't. This vendor did neither.

5 out of 5 stars Oldies But Goodies.......2007-01-09

This CD is awesome! It contains most of their hit songs from back in the day! I recommend this CD to anyone who likes The Temptations.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the best.......2006-11-10

The Temptations were Motown and this CD has their biggest hits and some that I had never heard before. Now I can say that I love everything the Temps did. The talent and voices are like majic. Otis Williams sure knew what he was doing when he put this group together.

Cramming 25 songs onto a single CD, this set captures the Tops during their peak 1960s years, when they rode the pens of Holland, Dozier, and Holland to the top of the charts. Combining the writers' pop melodies, a gentle Motown groove, and Levi Stubbs' earthy lead vocals, the group landed 11 Top 40 singles by 1967, all of which are included on this compilation. Unfortunately, The Ultimate Collection omits later gems such as "Keeper of the Castle," "Ain't No Woman," and "When She Was My Girl," but that leaves room to delve into the unique partnership between the Tops and their songwriting triumvirate. --Marc Greilsamer

Another great Motown classic! This includes all of their hits and then some.

5 out of 5 stars Let's Cruise the Boulevard!!!.......2007-03-12

Wonderful CD. Probably the greatest Motown groups ever. Great lyrics and expressions of love. My 23 yr old son even liked it. I'm surprised more current day artists havent redone some of these classics. Made me want to go cruise Bellflower Blvd in a 63 Chevy low-rider!!

4 out of 5 stars Sound quality deserves something better... Good compilation anyway!.......2007-03-06

No Soul fan can say he/she has heard the best of Soul, without having this good compilation of Four Tops greatest hits. "Reach Out I'll be There", "Sugar Pie Honey Bunch" and other great hits from this excellent vocal group are included.

5 out of 5 stars One of Motowns Best-Ever Groups!.......2006-05-02

The Four Tops were formed in Detroit, Michigan in 1953 though they never really struck lucky until they signed to Berry Gordys pioneering all-black record label, Tamla Motown Records, home to many legendary soul acts including Diana Ross, The Supremes, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, The Isley Brothers, Stevie Wonder, Martha Reeves And The Vandellas, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, The Marvelettes and many, many more.

The Four Tops were just simply a KNOCKOUT! Lead singer Levi Stubbs rocketing vocal delivery was capable of such impressive, immense power and volume and were one of Motowns best male acts during the companys heyday in the swinging sixties.

The Four Tops, like Diana Ross and the Supremes, enjoyed an extensive and dynamic collaboration with the genius songwriting and production trio, Holland-Dozier-Holland. Holland-Dozier-Holland helped put Motown Records on the map by creating and defining that classic Motown sound of the 60's along with the legendary muscian team known as The Funk Brothers. The Four Tops enjoyed a river of classics through the duration of the 1960's with the most magical of these offerings recorded under the guidance of Holland-Dozier-Holland.

I Can't Help Myself, one of The Four Tops signature tunes, contained a hooky melody and lyrics that could appeal to both the spirited and the saccharine. Levi Stubbs inimitable and persuasive voice on this classic is just pure SOUL! I Can't Help Myself shot up the charts landing at No.1.

The follow up to I Can't Help Myself, the appropriately titled It's The Same Old Song admitedly lacked the initial immediacy of that track but still holds its own individual merits and became another classic to their credit.

In 1966 The Four Tops literally exploded onto the charts with the far more adventurous and highly ambitious Reach Out I'll Be There. Reach Out I'll Be There was haunting and atmospheric in its tone. Levi Stubbs puts in another phenomenal, breathtaking performance with his grittily earthy, soulful delivery seamlessly surfboarding along the tidal wave of musical arrangements that consists of flutes, oboes and tambourines. It also delivered The Four Tops their first real taste of big chart success in the U.K. In the U.S Reach Out I'll Be There became their second chart topper.

The Four Tops music was always dramatically orchestrated that lands somewhere between soul,r&b and pop. Their staggeringly impressive run of hits continued with the magnificent Standing In The Shadows Of Love where there diverse and unique blend of harmonies gel remarkably well together which adds to its dazzling, magical effect.

Bernadatte was yet another infectious classic with its masterpiece musical production and astounding delivery from Levi Stubbs but there is a far darker and more atmospheric mood on the chilly and haunting 7 Rooms Of Gloom. Stubbs' whips along the verses with utter conviction that's literally spine-tingling across the rollercoaster and stark musical arrangements.

Holland-Dozier-Holland swiftly left Motown Records in early 1968 after a bitter dispute over back royalty payments with Motown boss Berry Gordy (many of Motowns stars subsequently sued the company years later for claims of unpaid record royalties). The Motown sound was slowly dissolving after their departure and was virtually extinct by the early 70's following Motowns headquarters move from downtown Detroit to swinging L.A. As a result The Four Tops chart-action became erratic.

They did still manage to come up with some winners. Their divine, unique cover of The Left Bankes' Walk Away Renee, which is arguably far more effective than the origanal and mereley conveyed Levi Stubbs versatile vocal approach. Walk Away Renee commendably proved that Stubbs' unforgetable voice could be just as effective when working on ballads. Walk Away Renee may have been sombre in its tone though still had a touching quality.

Another excellent ballad from The Four Tops that emerged in the late 60's was another atmospheric number, Still Waters Run. This classic hit was a remarkably exhilirating masterpiece featuring an exuberant performance from Stubbs. Still Waters Run also captures Stubbs' at perharps his smoochiest.

It's All In The Game and If I Were A Carpenter both encapsulate that swinging Motown sound and both are of significant value to this collection. However by the early 70's their once unstoppable momentum was now sadly beginning to wear thin. The Four Tops fled from Motown Records in the early 70s and had a number of record deals that didn't amount to too much and gradually they faded from view (though enjoyed a few minor revivals in the 1980's).

To this day The Four Tops continue to sporadically perform on the customary golden oldies circuit but its their glorious, golden 1960's era for what they will always be remembered for. This compilation titled The Ultimate Collection guides you through these fabulous, ground-breaking classics and capture the group at their prime. The Four Tops - The Ultimate Collection is ESSENTIAL to any serious soul music collection!

3 out of 5 stars OK cd but not exactly what I was looking for.......2007-07-13

I wanted a really upbeat mix from the 60s and even though the songs on this cd aren't bad, most of them are slower which wasn't what I was looking for for myself.

5 out of 5 stars the ultimate rock and roll collection of the 50's.......2007-05-15

A very good mix of songs and artists. Good to listen while travelling.

5 out of 5 stars Tarot Card Collector.......2006-07-10

I loved adding these to my collection. The 50s theme is delightful. I sent a deck of these to my sister as part of a 50s birthday package. She said, "Sorry I haven't worked much with tarot for some time but I'll give them a try." She found the cards, instruction book, and recipes to be delightful. I feel these are a prize for collectors and a great gift.

5 out of 5 stars Another great CD.......2006-06-30

It was a 50th anniv. gift. The couple enjoyed the music and then danced to the music.

5 out of 5 stars The best single CD of 50s Rock. Well worth the price........2003-05-12

The best single CD of 50s Rock, and 25 songs too! Well worth the price.

All songs are original hits by original artists.

Of 55 CDs of 1950s songs that I own, this is easily the best.

1/4/06 Update: Whoever put this collection together did more than simply pick songs based on sales charts, because two of my personal favorites that didn't chart very high ("Love Potion No. 9" and "Shout") are included.

Album Description

The artist who will forever be known as Prince-and could fittingly be known as "The Artist"-is one of the most brilliant, versatile and influential musical forces of his, or any, time. Prince took R&B and regally marched it into genre-blurring horizons previously unknown, fusing rock, funk, soul, psychedelia, pop, and singer-songwriter aesthetics into a sound that was mind-bending and booty-shaking. Sensual, literate, explosive, and groundbreaking, his artistry never stopped evolving and the hits and acclaim never stopped coming. His adventurous reinventions, bold experimentation, stellar instrumental and composing skills and genius for showmanship have placed him high in the pantheon of all-time superstars. "Unique" doesn't begin to describe his royal powers, showcased herein on the first-ever two-disc compilation of his masterful Warner Bros. years.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars What if the track listing was this!.......2007-08-07

What if disc one had looked like this. How many copies would have sold? Glam Slam (Remix), Escape (Remix), Hello (12"), I Wish U Heaven (12"), Mountains (12"), Alexa De Paris (12"), Anotherloverholenyohead (12"), I Would Die 4U (Remix), Another Lonely Xmas (12"), Love or Money (12"), America (12"), Alphabet St. (This is not music this is a trip) (Remix)

This CD will never ever ever come out so I am forced to make it myself. I give one star for Let's Work and one star for Thieves In The Temple.

5 out of 5 stars worth a king's ransom.......2007-07-17

I had been hoping something like this would come along... the ultimate collection of the best of Prince. Sure, there were other songs I wish had been included (and the original version of Raspberry Beret) but overall, this is an awersome CD.

3 out of 5 stars His royal badness.......2007-03-13

Before all the negative votes start piling up, let it be known that I come to praise Prince, not to bury him.

While I am perfectly happy to have a lot of these songs on one disc, I am also disappointed that a few songs are missing. Add to that I really don't care about "rare dance mixes" (yawnnnnnnn), then I am the rare listener to have issues with the second disc. I would have been much happier with "Kiss," "Pop Life" and "Raspberry Beret" in their album versions, instead we are forced to listen to dopey raps and cornball dialogue. Hardly the stuff of genius, even if I believe Prince to be one.

I am also perfectly happy to get a single disc with the cream of doff albums like "Parade" or "LoveSexy." Prince had his run of unbeatabilty that lasted up to "Purple Rain." But after that, even for a boy-wonder, things got spotty. That said, I do wish the "Batman" stuff was here, and maybe he'd have switched "Nothing Compares 2U" with "AnotherLoverHoleInYourHead." These being my personal quibbles, of course.

Prince was the soul machine of the 80's...an unstoppable force of nature that packed dancefloors all while charting his own course. He took risks and made them pay off (or not, if you think about the "Under The Cherry Moon" movie). But he played guitar like a Hendrix and funked like James Brown with an admitted Joni Mitchell fixation. What is not to love? The three star rating is for the clumsily compiled songs here, not for the merit of the music.

Now when are we getting the classic albums remastered?

1 out of 5 stars No "Ultimate" compilation at all! Extended versions are the worst ever!.......2007-03-06

I got this album with the idea of getting what I thought was a reasonable good compilation of Prince's greatest hits. Well... CD 1 is okay... But... What about CD 2? The 'Extended' and 'Dance Mix' versions of "Little Red Corvette", "Rapsberry Beret", "Let's Go Crazy" and "Kiss" REALLY SUCK! Why to avoid the excellent, original versions? The people at Rhino made a really bad choice on issuing this awful compilation and titling it as "ULTIMATE"!!
I would prefer to return this awful "Ultimate" compilation, get my money back and try buying Prince albums individually!!

5 out of 5 stars The Super Bowl Is At Halftime.......2007-02-05

In the hours leading to the Super Bowl, my prediction for the point in the show that will exceed the hype is halftime when Prince takes to the stage.

He was the icon of the music industry back in the day as a songwriter, producer and performer; his creative genius was that of Lennon/McCartney, Hendrix, Sly Stone, George Clinton & Phil Spector.

The two CDs feature 28 tracks, with 11 remixes on the second CD, including Let's Go Crazy, Little Red Corvette, Kiss - and my favorite track - Pop Life. The original cuts on the first CD are classics; my highlights are I Wanna Be Your Lover, Controversy, 1999, I Would Die 4 U and Purple Rain.

This is truly an ultimate Prince collection and shows him at the top of his game with the major record label. Now if only the football surrounding the concert will be just a little entertaining!

Smokey Robinson and the Miracles' 25-cut disc is the single most impressive one of Motown's Ultimate Collection series (which features 17 artists). Combining Smokey's endlessly inventive twists on romance (good and bad) with the Miracles' handful of straight-up party hits, it showcases one of American pop's most sure-footed and touching acts. The frontman's prowess as singer, writer, and producer lights up each of these single mixes; less-celebrated tracks like "My Girl Has Gone," "(You Can) Depend on Me," and "The Love I Saw in You Was Just a Mirage" stand as tall as the many oldies-radio staples featured here. (For much more, including "Mirage's" unstoppable flip side, "Come Spy with Me," check out the four-disc 35th Anniversary box set.) Robinson and his collaborators, both in and out of the group, regularly injected undeniable emotion into their creamy constructions, making for a stack of tracks that remain as relevant as the contemporary creations of fans Lennon-McCartney and Bob Dylan. --Rickey Wright

4 out of 5 stars Smokin.......2007-07-24

This is a good collection of Smokey Robinson tunes, a good Motown sound record. Smokey's voice is great. This is a long CD, over one hour, with 25 tunes, so fans will get their money's worth from this CD. For me the CD is an enjoyable listen. It's just not the genre I'm particularly into, so I gave it 4 stars. Fans of the 60s Motown stuff might consider it a 5 though. My favs:

Second That Emotion
Tears of a Clown
Tracks of My Tears

5 out of 5 stars Ours Is An Age Of Miracles.......2007-01-08

So you find a 10-spot on the street. Whatever will you do with it? Bribe a Congressman? Take it to your local greasy spoon for a hearty bowl of squirrel surprise, and a slice of the meringue pie you've been eyeing for months as it circled in its rotating glass case? Maybe skip down to the spirits store and pick up a bottle of Chateau Wallaby, ignoring the warning label which clearly states, "Caution: Consuming this product may cause nausea, dizziness, and an intense desire to burst into tears."

Or, you could buy this CD. (Highly recommended).

No R&B/soul collection would be complete without Smokey represented, and this exceptional Best Of anthology represents him admirably. At 25 cuts deep, it is virtually exploding with content, replete with must-have classics and unfamiliar gems. Like Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder, Robinson's voice evokes a visceral, emotional response. It has, of course, an ethereal beauty that sounds more suited to heaven than earth. The precision of the back-up harmonies and arrangements makes for an effect that is uniformly appealing, and genuine. This music is never overtly clever or self-conscious - it is masterfully crafted and sincere.

The generation doomed to endure hip-hop and rap would do well to take this CD out for a test drive, if only to discover that there was once music both pleasing to the ear and nourishing to the soul. Smokey spoke to women in a language that made them melt, a language men strained to learn and understand. Put on "I'll Try Something New." In 2:36, Robinson evokes the sentiments of romantic love in a way that is nothing short of transcendent.

What can I say: It is Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. Who can say anything bad about this?

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2006-11-10

It really brought back memories of watching Smokey Robinson and the Miracles back in the day.

4 out of 5 stars Love Smokey more than his tenure with the Miracles.......2006-08-25

The first time we listened to this alblum we were a bit dissapointed. I guess we are Smokey fans. We love his voice.
The earlier songs on the alblum came from his days with the Miracles. It was good for us , but not great. The second half of the alblum highlighted Smokey and we really enjoyed it. Hey 25 songs for this price. Who can complain.

This double CD collects not only Brother Ray's best-known '50s and '60s singles, but some choice semi-obscurities (the 1953 jump blues "Mess Around," his 1959 cover of Louis Jordan's "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Cryin'") that earn their places next to "What'd I Say" and "I Can't Stop Loving You." The man's originality and infectious feeling bleed through on each of these 36 tracks, whether he's transforming "One Mint Julep" or "America the Beautiful" or collaborating (separately) with Willie Nelson and Chaka Khan. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars The best compilation on the market........2007-01-27

Other than Genius & Soul: The 50th Anniversary Collection 5-disc boxed set, "Ultimate Hits Collection" is easily the best Ray Charles compilation on the market. Its 36 tracks cover the years 1953-1989. It may be pricey, but you get a 50-page booklet, two individual jewel cases and an attractive slipcase. This set covers the ABC years as well, so Rhino probably had to shell out some big bucks to license those tracks. I'm glad they included "Mess Around", one of Ray's earliest hits, but I would've like to have seen 1993's "A Song For You" here as well.

5 out of 5 stars Sherry.......2007-01-18

"Great CD. Would highly recommend. It's a great collection of all the hits. Other CD have a variation of songs, but if you want one with all hits, this is the one for you.

5 out of 5 stars Soul .......2007-01-10

This collection contains Ray Charles' greatest hits. Among the favorites are 'What'd I Say' , 'Georgia on my mind' 'Ruby' 'Hallelujah I just love her so'. For me what is important is those songs which I have heard over and over again, and which the re-hearing of brings pleasure in. It is not important to me that all the songs have that quality. In fact even with the best people, like Ray Charles it is only a small portion of the total work which plays again and again in the mind.
Ray Charles had incredible soul and feeling. And it is that feeling which makes his music so moving and enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Money Well Spent.......2006-09-16

I chose this collection for its wide range of Ray's career hits. Some of which I had never heard before, like "Mess Around." This was before the film was released of course. All time favorites of mine include, "What'd I Say" "One Mint Julep" "Night Time Is The Right Time" and "Hit The Road Jack." A true American Icon, Ray's genius continues through his recordings, for they are timeless. Not much else missing on this one.

B.B. King's music has been anthologized and put in box sets many times, but this is the first single-disc collection that truly spans the American icon's career. It starts with his breakthrough 1951 No. 1 R&B hit "Three O'Clock Blues" and ends, chronologically, with 2000's "Ten Long Years" from his platinum-selling, pop-chart-topping smash collaboration with Eric Clapton, Riding with the King. In between there are 19 numbers that trace King's creative peaks (1969's "The Thrill is Gone," 1960's "Rock Me Baby") and valleys (1973's disco-inspired "I Like to Live the Love"). And they all tell the story of his growth as a performer. As the years and tunes tumble by, King's guitar solos become more expansive and adventurous, and his cross-genre experiments, like 1987's "When Love Come to Town" with U2, grow bolder. "I'll Survive," also featured here, has become King's late-career theme song, but as he heads toward his 80th birthday on September 16, 2005--still playing 150 concerts a year with his vastly influential guitar skills sharp and his voice just a bit weathered--King's version of survival contains genuine majesty. --Ted Drozdowski

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to B. B. King.......2007-06-22

B. B. King is one of the best known bluesmen of the past several decades. His first hit came in 1951 with the wonderful "Three O'clock Blues" (more on this cut below). Nonetheless, his reputation was not very widespread among "mainstream" America. That changed with the British invasion (the Rolling Stones, Animals, Yardbirds, and so on) as well as the Paul Butterfield Blues Band (the liner notes do a good job of chronicling King's career). By the later 1960s, he became well known to people throughout the world. And in 1970, his great song, "The Thrill is Gone," became a hit. Even though this is a nice compilation of his best works, one can always wonder about items excluded. Personally, I regret that "Why I Sing the Blues" was not a part of this CD. But that is hardly a major problem. One final comment before taking a look at a sampling of his works on this CD. His guitar playing, of course, is legendary, but his is a restrained style, not spitting out a bazillion notes in a few seconds, as some guitarists are wont to do. But his guitar playing is mesmerizing.

Some cuts:

"Three O'clock Blues": This is a nice example of his blues singing. He has a fine voice, a nice blues voice. He looks around, in the song, at 3 O'clock in the morning.

"Well, I can't find my baby,
Lord, I can't be satisfied."

His guitar work is sterling, but understated. There is a very well done guitar turn about 2/3 of the way through. All in all, a strong work.

"Sweet Sixteen": This cut begins with some very well done guitar work. Not wild playing, but controlled and oh so effective. It reminds one that playing fast is not necessarily playing well. He sings of when he met his baby, when she was "sweet sixteen." He says that she was "the sweetest thing I ever seen." But then things soured and she left. He displays great blues singing, as he wails away about her running away from him.

"The Thrill Is Gone": Quintessential B. B. King. This features wonderful guitar work. "The thrill is gone" is sung throughout as a recurring phrase. The pain of lost love is manifest. And his splendid guitar work is a glue that holds the work together.

"Nobody Loves Me but My Mother": This is short but cool! One of my favorites. There is nice keyboard playing. One of the great blues lines is repeated in this bagatelle:

"Nobody loves me but my mother,
And she could be jiving, too."

When all is said and done, this is a good way for anyone interested in B. B. King to be introduced to his work. His blues playing on guitar and his singing are top notch. A good CD to add to one's musical library.

5 out of 5 stars The Best single disc of BB you will find.......2007-04-03

If you are going to own just one CD by the King, this is it. No compilation disc is all encompasing, but this one hits all the highs and well represents the various stages of his career. I particularly like how it is all in chronological order, other compilations could learn from this one.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Decades Spanning Compilation!!!.......2006-11-13

One of the best compilation CD's that I have ever heard!!! Includes many of B.B.'s early work, without any sugar coating. Includes songs that today might be considered mildly controversial like "Don't Answer the Door" and "Paying the Cost to be the Boss" and classics like "Rock me Baby" all the way through more modern hits like "When Love Comes to Town" with U2. This is a CD that you can play over and over again without getting tired of it.

5 out of 5 stars unbelievable.......2005-06-23

i've never heard music so moving in my entire life, this is the ultimate addition to anyones collection, get it or be lost

5 out of 5 stars The Growth of a Legend.......2005-06-11

This collection of great songs begins with the early hits and moves thru time to the more recent collaborations with U2 and Eric Clapton. You can really hear B.B. King grow as an artist as the album progresses and recording techniques improve. The songs themselves are truly classic : the lyrics to How Blue Can You Get belong in a museum. I especially recommend Paying The Cost To Be The Boss , Never Make A Move Too Soon, and his signature song, The Thrill Is Gone. There is no way that any blues fan cannot enjoy this cd

If the one-disc All-Time Greatest Hits leaves you panting for more, but the three-disc box set Just for You proves that one can, in fact, get enough of Barry White's love, well, then the two-disc Ultimate Collection is the anthology for you. An entire slow-jams industry has been erected in White's wake, but no one has done it better. Call it "funkzac"--an inimitable fusion of lush strings and suave brass dancing on a bed of funk and disco rhythms, with the manly maestro mixed prominently atop his seduction soundscapes. Ultimate Collection serves up enough cherry Barry to produce another baby boom. --W.C. Sweeney

3 out of 5 stars Barry White, The Ultimate Collection.......2007-07-05

Have to give 3 stars but to be fair it is based on what we thought we might be getting and selected the cd based on one song alone "Love is in the Air". We listened to the cd through to the end at one sitting and would consider it good background music for a gathering of friends but not something we would listen to again for mere enjoyment.

5 out of 5 stars simple GREAT.......2007-05-23

This CD is simply GREAT. It brings me back to a time when you had to have talent to create music. It is why so many of his songs/music is sampled and reused!!! This is music at it's BEST.

The title is a bit of a misnomer: The Supremes are anthologized in more comprehensive fashion on Motown's three-volume Greatest Hits series, while this package is denser, and has a higher hit-per-track ratio. But if you'd rather pick up one collection than three, and if you want a good, thorough skimming of cream from the group's catalog, this is the better choice. All of the familiar songs are here, with no major omissions--and they're packed in with a liberal helping of second-magnitude hits. For a collection that samples only the extreme top end of the Supremes' output, there's Every Great No. 1 Hit, also on Motown. It's missing a lot, but it delivers exactly what it promises. --Gavin McNett

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It's About the Music.......2007-06-27

Diana Ross and The Supremes were the leading girl group at Berry Gordy's Motown Records during the 1960's and 70's. Furthermore, they were a leading group among all girl groups of the 1960's; you've only got to count their hits to know that. But recently, with the Broadway stage and movie success of "Dreamgirls," and its non-Motown, non-original sound track, many of us may be more familiar with the backstory than the group's music.

This record collection can remedy that situation. Among its 20 tracks, I count 14 songs that were big, reasonably rocking hits, Motown style, before the studio started going for a softer style that better suited the emerging solo star Diana Ross's slender voice. Holland-Dozier-Holland surely knew how to write rocking songs; the studio had a celebrated, tight backing band, and The Supremes could deliver. Listen to "Come See About Me," one of their earliest hits, and hear those girls belt it out. Or try "Back In My Arms Again," "Love Is Like an Itching in My Heart,""Stop! In the Name of Love." Any one of their 14 original hits: these girls were not peddling bubblegum.

The backstory doesn't explain their great success: it's about the music...

5 out of 5 stars The best!!.......2007-01-05

Good quality and great selection!!! This is Diana Ross and the Supremes. What could be better?

5 out of 5 stars Damn, these girls could SING!.......2006-07-26

The Supremes (or Diana Ross & the Supremes, whatever you wanna call 'em) had two very important things today's R&B stars lack: the undeniable songwriting power of Holland/Dozier/Holland is one. For another, they had SOUL!!! If you're tired of the cut-and-dry, emotionless "soul" (read: rap) music from Mariah Carey & friends, give this one a spin! Good songs... where can I start? At the beginning, I suppose... When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes, Where Did Our Love Go?, Baby Love, Come See About Me, Back in My Arms Again (the latter five all #1's), I Hear a Symphony, You Can't Hurry Love (their best song in my mind), You Keep Me Hangin' On, Love Child, I'm Livin' In Shame, I'm Gonna Make You Love Me (with the Temps, a winning combo in my mind!) and the beautiful Someday We'll Be Together. And there's only one bad track over the course of 25 (yes, I'm actually admitting there is a bad song here. I deserve whatever flames I may be given) is the seriously dated No Matter What Sign You Are. Buy it, buy it, BUY IT!!!

3 out of 5 stars Not entirely Supreme.......2006-01-20

OK, what you hear are all hits, but there are more hits than on this CD. And plenty of other CD-sets to pick from. But I don't want more than one CD you say. Well, then pick the #1 Supreme hits CD. With a better track-listing an far better sound quality than this one. So you have to pay a bit more; you'll be dissapointed if you buy this one and then listen to the #1 CD.

And are you really sure you don't want to hear the gems that are finally discovered on the Supremes Box set?

3 out of 5 stars Awesome songs, bad audio.......2005-03-20

No sense repeating the extensive reviews regarding how influential and entertaining this music is. It's truly astounding, and the music is brilliant.

However...

In remastering these recordings, the audio engineers have apparently done what I always call a "boost and compress," which reduces dynamic range, increases overall apparent loudness, and often increases distortion. Back in the 60's, the tendency was to mix songs with vocals much louder than the accompanying music, and with very little deep bass. Nowadays the tendency is right the opposite, with electronically generated deep bass notes, and vocals barely peeking over the music. To give the Supremes a more modern sound, they seem to have compressed these tracks to bring up the music, especially the bass. The result is distorted and unnatural vocals, and compressed dynamic range, especially on the older songs. It's really a shame.

If you can't tell the difference between mp3's and CDs, you won't care. If you're an audiophile, you'll be disappointed.

Amazon.com essential recording

It's hard to think of a more quintessential pre-disco-era supergroup, and this really is the ultimate collection of the Jackson 5's finest. From the super-sweet "I'll Be There" (which went on to become one of the most-covered songs in recent history) to the peppy pop of "I Want You Back," the period's essence is in every single high note. The Afros, the bell-bottoms, Michael pre-identity crisis, it's all there and so much more fun than anything any of the clan has done since. This is a great party album: classics like "ABC," "Never Can Say Goodbye," and "Rockin' Robin" sit alongside more jazz-influenced tracks like a cover of the Isleys' "It's Your Thing," and are guaranteed to keep all feet on the dance floor. --Rebecca Wallwork

5 out of 5 stars Who could argue ...???.......2007-05-22

Timeless pop and soul when Michael and family were more into the sound and less into weirding us out.Classics.Feed it your kids, if you can get the Ipods out of their ears.

5 out of 5 stars Jackson 5 CD.......2006-11-03

4 out of 5 stars What Happend to the Jermaine Vocals.......2006-09-21

I Want You Back is one of my favorite songs and Jermaine was my favorite Jackson. On this CD his vocals are missing from the song, major disapointment for me. But overall CD is excellent!

B2K took notes ... and ran
N'Sync/The Backstreet Boys/98 Degrees took notes ... ran
Dru Hill took notes ... and ran
112 took notes ... and ran
Jodeci took notes ... and ran
Boyz II Men took notes ... and ran
New Edition took notes ... and ran

But the J-5 set the precedent and their music keeps going and going and going!!!

Michael was still Black, the brothers were gettin' along, LaToya's clothes were still on, Janet was makin' us fall in love with her on "Good Times" and the craziness that was Joe and Katherine's relationship was still a well-kept family secret.

In between, you'll get this CD of timeless classics from the Jackson 5 -- "The Ultimate Boy Band ... Period."

"Dancing Machine," "Never Can Say Goodbye Girl (No, No, No; No, No, No)," "Rockin' Robin," "I Wanna Be Where You Are (Oh!)" ... the list LITERALLY goes on and on and on.

And to think as soon as the Jacksons first hit it big, Mainstream America tried to quell their thunder by pushing so-called more "mainstream" (read between the lines) family acts like the Osmonds and the Partridge family (as if?!?!?)

This was just another time and place in life.

This album captures a more pure, innocent time in music.

Highly recommended album!

1 out of 5 stars Pure Bubble Gum Pop.......2005-04-23

The Jackson 5 were bubble gum teenie-bopper pop just like The Osmonds, The Partridge Family, The Monkees, New Kids on the Block, 'N Sync, Backstreet Boys, Hanson, and The Moffetts . The Jackson 5 were no better than the The Osmonds or The Partridge Family and just as bad as the the monkees. The vocals are teenie-bopper, the lyrics are tennie-bopper, the music is tennie-bopper. This is bubble gum teenie-bopper pop at its worst. If you like the monkees, the partridge family, the osmond then your sure to like this dated bubble bum pop junk.
