Editorial Reviews
From Jazziz
Recorded live in 1998 as Tower of Power celebrated its 30th anniversary, Soul Vaccination displays the band's strengths as well as its weaknesses. The strengths are many, starting with one of the finest horn sections in the business. After all their years together, the three saxes and two trumpets have achieved a blend that gives them the power of a much larger section, and yet they have a tightness that even a smaller horn section would be lucky to achieve. And with the recent return of original drummer David Garibaldi and with the continued presence of bassist Francis Rocco Prestia, the band benefits from one of the great funk/soul rhythm teams of all time. But much of the album lacks a sense of purpose. Rather than using the funky licks and syncopated grooves to bring out the meaning of the song itself - which is the true power behind the type of soul music to which Tower of Power aspires - songs such as "Soul With a Capital S," "Soul Vaccination," "You Got to Funkifize," "What Is Hip?," and "So I Got to Groove" are funk for the sake of funk. And as heartfelt as "Diggin' on James Brown" may be, it's the surface attitude without the inner essence of the Godfather of Soul. Much more successful are tracks such as "Down to the Night Club," where the music combines with the lyrics to create a sense of place, and the ballads "Willin' to Learn" and "You're Still a Young Man," in which the musicians serve the song's emotion.

Live Tower in the 90s.......2007-06-10
I've been a Tower of Power die hard fan since the late 60s, before they even recorded. This CD doesn't dissapoint as Tower was always much better live than on records although they have made some fine recordings. The lead singer on this outing ranks up there with Rick Stevens and Lenny Wiliams......Tower definetly has the Oakland Stroke on this disc, excuse me but it's time to get down at the night club because after all, I'm still a young man.
A Funkin' Institution.......2007-03-19
TOP is in top form in this impeccable live performance. Recorded soon after David Garibaldi's return to the band you get to hear and feel how much imoact this phenomenal drummer has on the band and funk drumming in general. All the classics are here - What Is Hip, Soul Vaccination, Willin' to Learn, as well as some newer tunes. All are performed with what seems to be some new found inspiration (probably initiated by Garibaldi's contribution). Emilio, Rocco, David, Doc , and the rest of these stellar musicians are on fire and remain the most underappreciated institution of R&B. BUY THIS CD - NOW!!!!!
Great music!!.......2005-08-03
I'm a guitar based rocker, and I love this stuff!! Check out a couple of music downloads if you need to before you buy, but at least take a listen!!
Simply put, THE 2ND GREATEST LIVE ALBUM EVER!.......2005-06-03
I've been a fan of these guys since Huey Lewis got the horn section to play on two of his late 80's albums. I only got into them as a group afterwards in college. Most of the reviews I have seen about this album have been spot on in my humble opinion. I would just like to add that while its great to have live versions of new songs (Soul With A Capital "S", Diggin' On James Brown, So I Got To Groove) and old songs (Soul Vaccination, So Very Hard To Go, Can't You See..., etc.) this collection PALES in comparison to Tower's original live album, LIVE AND IN LIVING COLOR. I encourage everyone to pick that cd along with this one. Trust me, you will not be disappointed.
Vocals could be better.......2004-07-27
I saw TOP in April with Larry Braggs as lead vocalist. He has a much stronger voice than Brent Carter does on this CD. Nonotheless, this CD is almost as good as being there.

This is not what I expected from an amazing new audioformat.......2001-08-06
I own several cd,s that sound better than this sacd. Together with this one ,I also ordered Willy Nelson sacd, this is realy the best audio recording I ever heard. Better than lp,dts, 24bit dvdaudio. What went wrong with this sacd? It sounds sharp, not as far so dynamic as James Brown Live at the hal ..dtsdvd. Also it souns dull in the higherfrequencies overall a cold recording. I know this is a liverecording but they can sound good to. If you own a sacdplayer and want to try out this amazingsounding new format do not buy this one. Unless your a fan.

A 30th Anniversary Live TOP Album.......2001-07-10
Tower of Power celebrated their 30th anniversary with SOUL VACCINATION: TOWER OF POWER LIVE. The 15 tracks on this album span tunes from their second album, BUMP CITY, up until their last studio album of the 90's, RHYTHM & BUSINESS. From the first notes on Doc Kupka's bari sax on "Soul With A Capital 'S'" listeners can't help but dance. Classics such as "What is Hip," "Soul Vaccination" and "So Very Hard To Go" have changed over the years getting even funkier and fresher than ever. If you own the orignal albums your money will not be wasted on these newer versions of old tunes. Jesse McGuire's trumpet solo on "Willing to Learn" is one of the best trumpet solos that I've heard in any genre and I've seen many a trumpeter's jaw drop the first time that they hear that solo. My favorite song on the album would have to be "To Say The Least You're The Most." Doc's sax is even more prominent than the original recording! Overall, this is an album that should not be missing from any collection. If you've been thinking about buying a TOP album and don't know which one to get, this is the one. If you loved TOP in the past and want to know what they've been up to in the 90's, check this out. It's simply one of the best.
