this is one of my favorites (a classic) the more you listen the better it gets.the band is as tight as it get's, very strong as you listen you wait for a bad tune there is'nt one. the guitar is exelent as for the horns witch i am not real big on can't be matched. the vocals are awsome i can't get enough of this one. i have over 1,000 blues cd's and this is a real stand out.i have 8 of his cd's this is my favorite just buy it you will be amazed.alsoit is over an hour of pure blues live in germany.

Sam McClain is a blues singer aka rthym n' blues. Sam started his career towards the end of the soul era but has continued performing and is one of those excellent blues vocalists playing small clubs (in Sam's case, mostly around Boston). "Joy & Pain" was recorded live in Germany in 1997. McClain has surrounded himself with a great band and the songs are all first rate. If you like the late Otis Redding or Bobby Blue Bland then you will truly enjoy Mighty Sam McClain and his great band.

really tight Album.......2005-10-17

this Album just never dates.it sounds as soulful&Full of Groove as it did when it first came out. the title cut alone is that Jam that sets off any Maze Concert."Southern Girl" is Da Jam.it's a Crying shame these Brothers don't get no Love.Frankie Beverly&Maze would run the Rolling Stones&some of these Other bands off the stage.

Hands down this is a brilliant album!In the emmediate post
disco era Frankie Beverly & Maze had been swinging the musical
tide in the opposit direction for five years before this album
was released in 1980.The opening cut "Changing Times" swirls
around with a light guitar solo,then goes into blasts of bass
before going full throttle into soulful funkiness,matched only
to a plaintive guitar and Beverly's gurgling,soulful voice.
Then there is the title cut and I only have one word to say about that-ALL TIME SOUL AND POP CLASSIC!It's up there with
the finest of Stevie,Marvin,Isaac,The O'jays and EWF but sadly
is little known outside the R&B community!"Southern Girl" is
a fine funk romp but throughout 'Joy And Pain' tempo's are always changing,the musica always evolving and the organ/vocal/
guitar interplay has a rather folksy approch to soul that few
of the period's urban contemporary artists could replicate.Not
that Maze with their hard driving sound were ever an urban band at all.And that's what gives this album it's charm-it's unlike
anything else in R&B at that point and hasn't aged one day!The
entire neo soul movement of today stems directly from albums
like this one so fans of 'Innervisions','What's Going On',
'Hot Buttered Soul' or even 'A Quiet Storm' should go right out
and purchase 'Joy And Pain'-it's a definitive soul classic
and will transport you to another musical world!

F.B. and Maze have many fantastic songs, but I believe this is their best cd/album. Every song is absolutely wonderful. The hits are cd's moniker and Southern Girl, but the first three cuts/tracks are treausures that I don't think received a lot of air play. A greatest hits compilation is good for an introduction to Maze, but this ablum is the one to have if you are a die hard fan like myself. Also, you haven't experienced a spiritual experience quite like seeing Maze live, so do yourself a favor and check them out if they come to a city near you.

Frankie Beverly's voice and Maze's overall sound is very hard to catagorize;is Frankie a soul or gospel singer?Does Maze
play funk or smooth soul?Well actually all of the above-without
horns and a big orchestra to muddle the bands tasteful musicianship and production.Nothing here will dissappoint but in
terms of pure Fleetwood mac-like popcraft go no further then
"Changing Times",for the funk go to "Southern Girl" and for pure
classic soulmanship,groovepower and inspiration go straight to
the tital cut.In other words;GO TO THIS!!!!

If Aretha Were Still Making Music Like This..........2001-06-24

...this is what she would sound like! Shirley takes the legacy started by Aretha and brings us a modern version of blues/soul. Her range and depth of emotion are incredible, again reminiscent of Aretha's early days. The songs and arrangements on this CD are for you IF you like what is mostly black gospel music with secular themes.

I must say, I love all of the soulful and uplifting albums Maze/Featuring Frankie Beverly has released. This particular album Inspiration/Joy and Pain has some of my very favorite Maze songs on them and owning them is a music lovers treasure. This album is timeless.

The music is superb, rhythm exhillirating, sound is fantastic!. I've been a fan since they began and they just get better with time! I've never missed a performance in the Los Angeles/San Diego areas. 0nly wish they were more visible. To the PRODUCERS: why are they restricted from appearing on television shows? Why are the concerts so infrequent? When are they returning to Los Angeles? Will they appear at the July 4th concert in New Orleans this year? How can I get up close and personal with Frankie and Maze???? We need more!!!!!!!!!
