Album Description

Blue Six, the production alias of Jay Denes, New York-based musician and co-founder of the highly-regarded Naked Music label, will release his eagerly-anticipated second full-length album, Aquarian Angel on March 13, 2007. By blending underground sensibilities with soulful grooves and lyrical seductiveness, Aquarian Angel continues to do what Blue Six and Naked Music are known for - taking dance music to the next level with mature albums that are synonymous with soulful, stylish sophistication.

Originally a production company, Naked Music was formed in 1998 by Jay Denes and his partner, fellow musician Dave Boonshoft. As the signature artist who captured the essence of the label, Blue Six quickly proceeded to capture the attention of the music scene with their underground dance classics "Sweeter Love" and "Music & Wine" rapidly becoming the ubiquitous soundtrack for scores of clubs, restaurants and bars, from New York to London to Paris.

Aquarian Angel is the follow up to Blue Six's full-length Naked Music debut, Beautiful Tomorrow (2004), which was a dazzling collection of tracks that combined dance grooves and R&B vocals with darkly intelligent lyrics. Aquarian Angel takes all the elements that made Beautiful Tomorrow so well loved and evolves into adult dance grooves and R&B-styled vocals that are cross-fertilized with Brazilian beats, ambient backdrops, and elements of jazz. Additionally, the upcoming CD reunites Jay with the three unique voices that helped make Beautiful Tomorrow such a classic: The triumvirate of label mates, Aya, Lisa Shaw and Catherine Russell return to lend their very different vocals styles, three distinct voices that, over the course of the album, combine to create that instantly recognizable Blue Six sound.

Denes spent the time between Beautiful Tomorrow and Aquarian Angel producing solo albums for both Aya and Lisa Shaw. Aya's "Strange Flower" and Lisa's "Cherry" garnered rave reviews and continue to get consistent radio-play worldwide. After these two intense collaborations, he was ready to compose the Aquarian song-cycle, writing each piece with a specific vocalist in mind. Musically, he has concocted a hybrid that combines his own expert manipulation of state-of-the-art computer technology with the warmth and unpredictability of live musicianship. As a result, Aquarian Angel breathes with a life of its own as it caresses your body and plays with your mind. "Tropicalia", a lush Afro-Brazilian track that features Lisa Shaw, is the first single off the album. Its infectious percussion-driven rhythms will entice DJ's of all stripes.

"On Aquarian Angel I threw all my musical preconceptions out the window," says Denes. "My only intention was to communicate my thoughts and feelings as they presented themselves to me. I think the end result is more varied and broader in scope than my previous work and will ultimately be as meaningful to my listeners as it has been to me."

Fans of the genre called deep house owe much to pioneers like Jay Denes, whose Beautiful Tomorrow (2002), recorded under the moniker Blue Six, introduced many to a silky and impeccably produced cocktail of jazz-house soundscapes. For fanciers of Tomorrow, Aquarian Angel--which is chock full of the vocal stylings of house sirens Lisa Shaw and LT (Aya)--does not disappoint. On the captivating "Here I Come," Shaw's smoky voice chants "this day's done, build another in its place" over a chilled organ line, and LT's singing makes the title track a spot-on lullaby for the urban set. Like Tomorrow, Angel is house made more for the lounge or beach than the floor, as the lush harmonies of "Half Life" and the Brazilian-inflected "I've Given Enough," whose throaty sax line that would make Chet Baker smile, attest. And while some may find Angel's atmospherics a bit saccharine, Denes's crystalline mixing is truly astounding. There is also a sincerity and dimension to the music that sets Angel apart from the genre's more formulaic productions and lures the listener back to tracks that don't immediately make sense. After all, they call it "deep" house for a reason. --Brent Kallmer

4 out of 5 stars A NAKED DELIGHT.......2007-07-31

THE NAKED MUSIC CREW HAS PUT ANOTHER LATE NITE CLASSIC, THIS ONE IS JUST AS GOOD AS THEIR FIRST ALBUM, I PLAY THIS ONE WHILE CRUISING IN THE RIDE AT NITE, AND WHEN I HAVE COMPANY OVER .LOVE HOW THEY FUSE HOUSE ,SOUL AND TROPICAL ELEMENTS INTO THEIR SOUND.OVERALL GOOD CD ,

3 out of 5 stars Aquarian Angel.......2007-07-10

This cd has the "Blue Six" sound. It is extremely mellow and heavenly... If you like the first cd, you may like this one as well. More of an easy listening, chillout flow, extremely mellow - some songs have an angelic flow...

5 out of 5 stars this music is sublime.......2007-06-23

as with other reviewers, i was skeptical that this release would live up to its illustrious predecessor. not only is it as good as the first blue six release, it is even even more sublime. jay denes (and miguesl migs) practically invented this genre of chilled out deep house grooves and jay totally delivers on this fantastic follow up. i would say that these are some of the best performances from lisa shaw and aya to date. the productions values are outstanding. listening to this cd makes me want to travel to a far away island and sip rum drinks on a tropical beach with someone very special while watching the sun slip into the deep blue (six)...

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!! Another great work from Blue Six...KUDOS NAKED MUSIC!!!.......2007-06-09

The first 30 seconds I was hooked on the ambient, more mellow sophomore "gem" from Blue Six. This album is absolutely incredible musically and vocally. It is alot different from "A Beautiful Tomorrow". The bossa nova feel of the album is a nice touch. I love Lisa Shaw's voice. My favorite vocalist on the Naked Music label. Now do not get me wrong, Aya and Catherine Russell are great, and incredible vocalist as well. Tropicallia sets the stage for the album. There is not song I do not like. Some other standouts for me are "Half Light", "I have Given Enough", "A Women of the World", "Here I Come" and "Fast Free Delivery." NOTHING I have ever purchased from the Naked Music Inc and family has been a disappointment. Jay Denes continue enriching us with your sound and creativity in this often tragic age of soulless music. Always a supporter.

5 out of 5 stars More mature, but still great........2007-05-24

When I first listened to Aquarian Angel, I was trying to compare it to A Beautiful Tomorrow, but there is not much to compare. In fact you may be disappointed if that is what you are looking for. However, this album still probides a mellow, lounge-type selection of great music. You can definitely drown your mind into this album and get away to a place you want to go anytime and anyplace with this album. If you like the laid back drums and easy voices of lisa shaw, catherine russell, and aya; you will appreciate Aquarian Angel.

Re-recorded, remixed, overdubbed and repackaged--all before its 1970 American release, mind you--Let It Be has long been the most second-guessed album in the Beatles otherwise sterling catalog. This curious, three-decade-late, stripped-down rethink offers up yet another spin on what started as a back-to-the-roots album/documentary project called Get Back in January, 1969, but ended up as the band's de facto swan song 18 months later. Paul McCartney in particular has long been irked by producer Phil Spector's grandiose orchestra and choir overdubs to the title track and "The Long and Winding Road," and indeed the "bare" versions here have a distinct, plaintive charm lacking in Spector's typical pomp. All the various snippets of studio and live chatter that seasoned the original have been removed, leaving the recordings to be judged on their essentially live-in-the-studio merits. If the intent was to "de-Spectorize" the album, the inclusion of John Lennon's 1968 benefit track "Across the Universe" and George Harrison's "I Me Mine" (which marked the last-ever Beatles session in January, 1970) in their original versions seems equally odd, the legendary producer having appended them to the album's original track listing in the first place. The rambling "bonus disc" of conversation and song snippets culled from hundreds of hours of session and film tapes may fascinate diehard fans, but it also underscores the murky, often unfocused state of affairs the Fabs found themselves in during the last year of their remarkable career. --Jerry McCulley

1 out of 5 stars Heads up! DRM in force.......2007-08-07

I just got my copy today, and was so excited to listen to it, because I never tire of the Beatles, no matter how they repackage it. So I popped into my computer to rip it to iTunes, like I do all my music, so I can put it on my iPod; my only actual CD player is in my car, and has been for several years now.

iTunes wouldn't recognize the CD at all, nor did my computer recognize it as being in the E: drive. When I tried opening E:, it froze and wasn't responding, and I had to do a forced quit on the computer to get out. This is not the first time I've had trouble with DRM on my laptop. I couldn't even listen to it, let alone copy it! That's what the 1 star is for--for Capitol, not the Beatles, whom I love as much as ever.

So if you have known issues with your computer dealing with DRM-infested CDs, you may want to walk away from this one. I should've looked more carefully, because the traditional "Compact Disk" logo wasn't on it. Fortunately, my Marketplace seller is willing to take it back and refund my money; I contacted her immediately.

The irony of DRM is that they're protecting their investment so well, they won't sell any of it, or at least they won't keep it sold.

3 out of 5 stars Paul,it's too late...........2007-07-29

First, kudos to Paul McCartney for enter HIS entry in the "Let It Be"/"Get Back" album "contest".Granted,it's Spector-less,sonic wise it's as clean as it can be and the new order is okay.True,it IS the better album,BUT...it's been over thirty years.A clean version of "IMM" and "TLAWR" came out on "Anthology 3" in 1996 and a clean version of "ATU" came out earlier that year on "Anthology 2".
What I'm trying to say is despite the fact that "LIBN" is the better sounding album, people are used to the original...and I don't think most people are willing to part with it.

5 out of 5 stars Let It Be...Naked is a Great Studio Album.......2007-07-27

Let It Be...Naked is a great Beatles studio album. Every track on this CD is great.

I love The Beatles' music and I'm sure I always will but I never bought or wanted to buy the original Let It Be because I thought I'd wait until I had their better albums first. I already had a lot of the songs on other Beatles CD's like the 1967-70 Blue Album and Past Masters Vol. 2. The versions of these songs from Let It Be were either overproduced with the distracting girl singers and unnecessary layers of strings or they were the cold winter rooftop concert versions which is not the ideal environment to record an album in.

What is great about Let It Be...Naked is that the producers and engineers were given permission to do their jobs. They cleaned up, edited, and EQ'd the original recordings with the tools available in professional recording studios today. The result is what everyone expects today when a high budget major label studio album comes out. The engineers did a great job taking windy, noisy live tracks from the rooftop concert and cleaning them up to make them sound like they were recorded in the studio. The mix is great. You can really hear all 4 Beatles and Billy Preston clearly. The sound is crisp and punchy, the arrangements are flawless, the mistakes are fixed and the in between banter is edited out, just like every other Beatles album. I believe if The Beatles continued their routine of going into the studio with George Martin to record Let It Be it would have come out more similar to this CD than the original release.

Some people prefer bootlegs and demo tapes to professionally produced music and other people get attached to the original versions of songs. If you are one of those people you'd probably prefer the original release. Although I love to watch the rooftop concert footage which is available on The Beatles Anthology DVD's and hopefully will be available one day in it's complete form, when I listen to a Beatles CD, I want to hear the best possible produced studio recordings. Let It Be...Naked does that for these batch of songs.

4 out of 5 stars Stellar Sound.......2007-07-26

Many other reviews discuss the "Spectorisation" of three tracks, which is the most glaring difference between the original and this "naked" production. Personally, I like the orchestral versions better overall (sorry Paul).

However, for those who appreciate clear, crisp sound, this remixed CD wins hands-down. I'm a former audio engineer, and am very impressed. The stereo aspect is also superior. The energy seems better, too.

I just wish I could get the "Spectorised" cuts with this much clarity.

4 out of 5 stars Forget the Original and Buy this one........2007-07-02

A lot of people don't want history messed with, but I, for one am glad that this has come out. I bought the original album in the 70's and as a Beatles fan was very disappointed. It just didn't sound like them to me. I replaced all my Beatles albums on CD when the time came--except for this one. You know from other reviewers the tale of this album's creation, but let me say that this is probably the closest we will get to hearing these songs as they might have sounded if The Beatles had stayed together long enough to actually finish this project. This sounds, to my ears, much more like the Beatles. The greatly improved sound quality is reason enough to buy this cd. I don't miss "Maggie Mae" or "Dig it" which were nothing but useless filler. All the banter being gone, makes it a much more polished album. Including "Don't let Me Down" makes perfect sense, since it is in the film, backs the "Get Back" single and strengthens the collection of songs. I can't imagine why it wasn't there in the first place.

A minor complaint would be that it would have been nice to have a few bonus songs such as "The Ballad of John and Yoko", "Old Brown Shoe", "You Know My Name, Look Up the Number" and the single version of "Get Back." The first two, though not part of the "Let it Be" project, were comtemporaneous with the other songs and have the same sound. The Latter two were from singles related to the album. It would have also been more in keeping with the traditionally generous song selection on other Beatle albums, and these songs have never properly been put on an album(and this would be the one). Only eleven songs seems a bit stingy. The inclusion of these songs would have made this a killer album at the time, on par with their other albums, instead of the sad affair it was. I also dislike the flippant title and art work. In hindsight (always 20/20) it would have been much better to do a deluxe release of the original "Let it Be" that included these recordings. A double CD that probably would have made everyone ecstatic, since they would have what they want and could make the comparison. The Fly on the Wall bonus seems pointless and could have probably been much more substantial. Oh well.

In summary, greatly improved over the original in terms of songs and sound quality, but could use a few more songs for the money. Get this one and forget the original. If you have a need for the Spectorized versions for completeness or sentimentality, you can find them on "One" or other repackagings.

I was on the hunt for new music because of old r&b and found Naked Music and Gaelle. This has a hint of r&b but that is ok because, it is done right with good smart song writing and a good sound. If you are looking for something different and you do not mind house, then get this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Nude Dimensions: Naked Music, Vol. 1 - The Petalpusher Session Mixed By Miguel 'Migs'.......2007-05-06

This CD is amazing. Every track on the cd is top notch music.

5 out of 5 stars Just Awesome!.......2006-09-11

I dont plan on writing a review of all the CDs I own, but this one is one of my favorites.

I am a newly re-born house-head. The house beast has been asleep for over 15 years and then I came across Mr. Migs by way of some of the reviews I read here on Amazon. And I learned how much the music has grown and matured and become so sofisticated! My children even tell me they like "my music" LOL!

If you like Deep House, you must own this disc. This CD has great fidelity, it thump, thump, thumps while I am at work or while I am commuting in traffic or when I am cleaning.....just whenever!

Do yourself a favor and pick it up. You will not be sorry!

5 out of 5 stars Sexy naked music.......2006-07-04

As a fan of club/dance/ambient music in general, I would always find an artist that I liked and look desperately for their music always afraid to venture into compliations in fear of having a few songs that I knew I wouldn't like.

This is certainly not the case with Nude Dimensions.

Miguel Migs (petalpusher who I liked anyways) has done wonders in this seemless transition that takes you high then brings it back down to cool and just leades you through a musical experience only a fan of such music could truely appreciate.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2005-12-31

This is a great CD for anyone who is even a "moderate" house music fan. Great beats, sets the chill-out mood to a level to where you and you significant other will be comfortably naked. This is a must buy.

5 out of 5 stars return .......2005-10-16

5 out of 5 stars Strange Flower.......2007-08-01

I picked up this CD from a record store in Sydney a couple of years ago so it has been out a while now. I got it by accident as I went back to get another CD. The store suggested Strange Flower as a replacement as the other CD wasn't in stock. The singer Aya is on another Naked music CD "Beautiful Tomorrow" by Blue Six. And Aya's CD has the same feel mellow and introspective. My favourite tracks are "Leaving for the Sun", and "I'll Never Give In"

I love Earl Klugh and this is guitar "straight" from the heart. One of his best. I bought it for "Ding Dong the Witch is Dead" and found so many more wonderful songs, like "Moon River".

1 out of 5 stars Disappointment........2006-11-30

Wow, I'm extremely disappointed with this CD. I've heard a few of his songs on satellite radio which made me want to purchase an album of his. I had no idea when he named the album Naked Guitar, that it would literally consist of music from a guitar and nothing else. I found the album to be extremely boring.

The only song I like on the album is Angelina which is pretty nice. But because the album lacks enthusiasm due to a lack of instruments, I don't recommend buying this one.

I should have gotten one of his greatest hits albums like I had initially planned but b/c of this album, I may not, instead, I'm thinking of getting an album by Rachelle Ferrell, her voice is just amazing.

5 out of 5 stars A winner - no bad cuts, well recorded, a master at the top of his game.......2006-04-27

I have loved Klugh's guitar styles since "One on One" - one of my all time favorite albums (OK, CDs). As mentioned by others, you can put the CD in your Player and sit back and enjoy tune after tune. I keep the CD in my office as background music - very mellow and yet I catch myself humming along (Ding Dong the Witch is Dead....).

I know some folks find these smooth jazz albums less than worthy of consideration but when you really listen, the talent wins you over. I know it did for me.

When people ask me what kind of music I listen to....I never know exactly how to describe it. From now on, I will simply say, "Go listen to Lisa Shaw." WHat a beautiful voice!! It seems so hard to find a great vocalist who will put out snappy upbeat songs. Jeez, if I have to suffer through another one of these divas who only want to drone on with slow songs....BUH! I have listened to this album an obnoxious amount of times and each time it makes me happy. I can't say enough about her delicious voice, interesting lyrics, and cool music. I hope she feels compelled to make another soon.

3 out of 5 stars The title said it all........2007-05-14

The title states all that you need to know. There are a few really good 80's hits that we remember, but the rest sound pretty much the same.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent CD to add to Your Collection.......2007-01-28

First of all, the intro to David Bowie's "Lets Dance" doesn't sound very similar to the intro in "Promises, Promises." Second, both songs were released in 1983, so the chance of "Promises, Promises" copying "Let's Dance" is small. Naked Eyes is the most unique and underrated musical group of the 1980's. This cd starts out with their most popular hit "Always Something There To Remind Me," with it's stong synth. Other notable hits on the album are "Promises, Promises," and "No Flowers Please." This CD keeps it coming all the way through from the beginning to the end. All in all a great cd to add to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 Stars - Some of the Best of the 80's!.......2006-06-26

First, thanks to Pete Byrne (the surviving half of Naked Eyes, along with the late Rob Fisher) for clarifying what happened with the two greatest hits collections of Naked Eyes in his Amazon review of Promises Promises (December 14, 2005) - EMI put this earlier compilation together, leaving off When the Lights Go Out, one of only four Top 40 hits by Naked Eyes (What WERE they thinking?). Pete subsequently put together a different, and somewhat superior, compilation (the aforementioned Promises Promises collection), but when EMI decided to delete one of them, they chose the wrong one and kept this one - Promises Promises is now long out of print, and used copies are usually VERY expensive. (Byrne, of course, makes nothing on the sale of used CD's, so don't blame him for profiteering.) This "Best Of" collection only contains 15 songs (all from their two U.S., studio albums), while "Promises Promises - The Very Best Of" contains 20 (including some bonus material).

That being said, even without When the Lights Go Out, this is a fantastic collection of songs by Naked Eyes, covering 9 of the 10 songs from their first album, the self-titled Naked Eyes, never yet released on CD. The Promises Promises collection leaves off only Could Be from their first album. By the way, looking at a Naked Eyes discography, I just found that the debut album was titled Burning Bridges in other countries, including two additional songs A Very Hard Act to Follow and The Time is Now, both included on Promises Promises, but not on this compilation.

Four of the ten songs from their other studio album, Fuel for the Fire (also never yet released on CD), are left off this compilation - Once is Enough and Answering Service do not appear on either compilation, while New Hearts and Me I See in You appear on Promises Promises. Of these four, all but New Hearts appear on Everything and More, a later compilation of rarities, b-sides, and remixes.

For the completist, almost everything from the two studio albums appears on either this Best Of package or the Everything and More rarities CD (and you can pick up When the Lights Go Out on the Back-to-Back Naked Eyes / Spandau Ballet CD quite cheaply - it has all 4 of their Top 40 hits). But hopefully Pete Byrne will be successful in the negotiations he mentioned in his review, to eventually bring out ALL of the Naked Eyes recorded output on CD. And hopefully this will include the song from the Dr. Pepper commercial done by Naked Eyes that someone in another review referred to - how cool.

Though they released only two studio albums, Naked Eyes had some of the catchiest pop songs of the 80's, and this CD is an excellent collection of all (except one) of their best!

5 out of 5 stars the best underated duo of the 80's.......2006-06-06

WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE SONG" ALWAYS SOMETHING THERE TO REMIND ME " WHICH IS EVEN A REMAKE, MOST PEOPLE DON'T ACTUALLY KNOW THIS DUO YET IF YOU LISTEN TO SOME OF THERE SONGS ITS REALLY YOUR MONEY'S WORHT TO BUY THERE ALBUM. MOST OF THERE SONGS FIND THERE WAY THRU MOBILE MIXERS BUT TRY TO LISTEN TO THE SONG " WHEN THE LIGHTS GO ON" WHICH IS NOT EVEN INCLUDED HERE THEN YOU COULD SAY THAT THIS DUO COULD HAVE BEEN MORE SUCCESFUL. TOO BAD FISHER IS NOW GONE AND THERE WON'T BE ANY MORE NAKED EYES ALBUM. I RECOMMEND TO EVERYONE OUT THERE CHECK OUT THEIR FIRST ALBUM ENTITLED NAKED EYES AND YOU HEAR WHAT I MEAN

5 out of 5 stars Come on people, take it for what it is!...........2005-12-23

It was great (and still is) great music! If you are not a fan of the synth sound, then what are you even doing listening to a band consisting of only two people and a bunch of keyboards! Their song writing prowess in my opinion was unmatched at the time and has been a large factor in their longevity. The way they matched the vocals to the complexities in their programming is pure genius and I have been absolutely inspired by their ingenuity. Keyboard was the best medium for their music. I just dont picture the songs having the depth that they did in a rock atmosphere. It is too bad Rob Fisher passed away; I think in today's music arena, he would have blown everyone away. Some of my favorite songs are: No Flowers Please, Emotion in Motion, Burning Bridges, Promises Promises, and A Very Hard Act to Follow (which unfortunately is not included on this album).

It's hard to find a contemporary musician more eclectic than alto saxophonist John Zorn. Whether investigating the affinity between traditional Jewish music and jazz with his band Masada, or performing soundtrack music for Japanese porno films, Zorn has consistently proven himself a fearless seeker of new frontiers. On Naked City, Zorn combines covers of such movie themes as Ennio Morricone's "The Sicilian Clan," Jerry Goldsmith's "Chinatown," John Barry's "James Bond Theme," and Johnny Mandel's "I Want to Live" with his own noir-inflected originals, and a "Peter Gunn"-like cover of Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman" is thrown in for good measure. The results are like a trip to the drive-in for a bad double-feature--if the drive-in is on Mars. The band, which features Zorn stalwarts Bill Frisell on guitar, Wayne Horvitz on keyboards, Fred Frith on bass, and Joey Baron on drums, is remarkably confident and wide-ranging. --Fred Goodman

5 out of 5 stars If there is such a thing as a "Starting Point" for John Zorns Music...(this is it!!??).......2006-07-04

For an Artist such as "John Zorn", who has run such a impressive range of genres that his music touches upon: (Free Jazz, Film Music, Improvisation, Rock, Metal, compositional, Jazz, lounge, cabaret, thrash, semi-ambient, post-classical ...etc), and music that wildly jump-cuts through these styles, and offers up such a huge plethora of diverse sounds, his music can seem bewilderingly and often overwhelming to the initiated. And liking one album, doesn't necessarily mean that you'll like another. One album can sound so radically different for another and feature such an unpredictable approach to music, that its hard to really recommend his music, to anyone expect those that like to be challenged by music or are musically adventurous. And with such a large catalogue of albums to choose from, such as the eccentric reinterpretation/re-imaging of film scores "John Zorn Plays the music of Ennio Morricone", through to the impressionistic musical approach and stretches of modern compositional live-music jazz of the strangely dark mood music of "Spillane". And that's not even mentioning the experimental and violent sounding passages of the Jazz/ambient/Noise fusion that is a fetishist's wet-dream, in the largely disturbing "Torture Garden". Which sit uncomfortably alongside the dark harmonics, and minimalistally arranged string quartet, and pronounced, sombre late-century classical music of "Cartoon S&M".

It would then be fair to argue that, although a lot of Zorn's albums could be considered essential, not all (even possibly only a few), could be recommended to the majority of listeners of his work. What works for one listener, won't necessarily work for another. So it's hard to single out one of Zorn's albums that would be a good recommendation for most listeners. But if such an album of his exists, then most people would agree that his astonishing "Naked City" album, would be as damn close to being considered his most universally liked/appreciated work. Nobody's saying it's his best album (although many, may well...believe it is), but it's an album that most, that have listened to Zorn's work, will agree is a brilliant starting point for his work. Judging by the controversial image on the album cover of a man lying dead after a fatal shooting, this is wildly disorientating album of tracks that run the gauntlet of : hardcore, rock, skewered country, sleazy jazz, thrash, Punk, Lounge, experimental, free improvisation & avant-garde & metal, and tracks regularly switch and morph into different styles and moods and musical shapes (and sometimes during the course of a track). The imagination and arrangements that have gone into creating this album is by and large, quite staggering. It's not an easy listen by any stretch of the imagination, and only those that like their music adventurous need apply. Because if you were to take this CD into a normal group environment, and play this for your friends, then unless they share the same open-ended approach to music that you do, then it's fair to say that both you (and your Cd) will be asked to leave.

The music shifts from moody film-noir pieces one minute, that conjures up images of seedy back alleys and shady characters....(think a musical take on "Sin City") luring you in with it's sombre mood, but then the next track is a relentlessly pounding passage of agitated saxophone wailing thrash-jazz, that references the more extreme end of Ornette Coleman & John Coltrane's work. With the passionate and energetically exuberant wig-out of tracks such as these. And it's a shock to the system the first couple of times you hear it, but its undeniably thrilling and very much like...flying on the seat of your pants via music. The performances here are without doubt exceptional and although the album sounds like nothing even remotely sounding like approaching structured, it is actually a carefully composed and arranged album, that has regular moments of improvisational sounds and Free-arrangements. It's an album that tackles abstract movie themes one minute, and then shrugs them off to dive into modern creative noise rock the next. Then its almost as if it wants to tackle straight ahead jazz (with a slightly sinister feel), then it take the intense of aggressive feel of metal, and imbue it with the mechanical and cold feeling of Industrial music, before switching back to a completely brutal and blistering take on Free-Jazz. It's a staggering album, possibly one that threatens to overwhelm the listener, as it's a rapid-fire cross-section of musical styles, genres and fusion-orientated approaches that both impress and overwhelm in equal measures. But once you made the commitment to the album, the perseverance begins to pay off, and what was at first a incredibly complex and unfocused album of random musical styles thrown together, with no consideration of what went before it, soon becomes a wonderfully idiosyncratic album. It's a album that shows, how when the correct pieces (and performers) fall into place, how truly breathtaking music, can be created, and how a band that perform music in such extremes, can arguably deliver something so original and breathtaking, that you essential box yourself into a corner. Any further continuation of this theme would merely be an additional companion, and never likely to scale the heights (and more importantly deliver the impact) of the first release, and likely to be a case of `Diminishing returns'. And to do something any more radically different from this would essentially be a completely different product, and couldn't truly be associated with this album.

If you like your music to follow conventional structures and ideas, then the screaming saxophone, leftfield Jazz, and mind-bending organ pounding hard-hitting drums, mixed with, chugging trash guitar metal, will be a deal-breaker, and swiftly prompt the return of the cd. But for those that have a fair idea of what to expect (that it is wildly varied challenging music), it'll over the course of several listens astound and surprise on many levels. The fact that the band would go on to other explore aspects of music, rather than retread existing material, (and then later disband) is a crying shame, but Naked City arguably remains one of the most relentlessly innovate and progressively creative (as well as technically brilliant) albums of John Zorn prolific career.

5 out of 5 stars Words... cannot... express...........2006-02-13

Although I didn't know it at the time, if Naked City hadn't have happened there's a good chance the likes of Mr Bungle, Secret Chiefs et al would never have existed. Its hard to believe that this album was made in the late 80s considering how crazy it is. Even if it was released today it would still sound fresh and exciting.

At times placid with stirring piano and smooth sax work, at other times crazy beyond belief like a cross between free jazz and grindcore, Naked City is a phenomenol album. While it takes a few listens to sink in, those of you open minded to even consider getting it in the first place will find that it grows on you surprisingly quickly. Zorn's saxaphone is brilliant throughout the entire thing. On The Silican Clan he sounds soulful and tasteful whereas on all the vocal tracks with Yamatsuka Eyes he sounds like he's having an epileptic fit. I've heard avant garde saxaphone work before and I have to admit I'm not always impressed, largely because it often sounds like noise that anyone could do. But Zorn's work on this album is so intense and on the ball with the music that it's hard not to have admiration for it. It is of course balanced out with 'typical' sax work, proving that the man is far from a one trick pony.

The music itself is all over the place. Sometimes melodic and almost peaceful, at other times upbeat and catchy, then noisy and aggressive, sometimes within the same 30 seconds, it's completely schitzophrenic and so unbelievably eclectic that one has to wondor what on earth possessed him to create such a thing. The whole band are clearly tuned into his vision though as they move in an out of moods and tempos with him at the drop of a hat. It's not easy to imagine how much practice they must have had to become so tight together.

This is simply an incredible record. If you're prepared for a challenge that's worth the effort then buy Naked City.

5 out of 5 stars Staggering Display of Musical Mastery- One of Zorn's Best..........2005-12-07

John Zorn hails from New York and has been one of the most interesting and exciting figures in contemporary music for years. He appears to be of limitless talent, acquiring quite a reputation for his wild eclecticism. That eclecticism is wildly abundant on this fine, fine album, as Zorn and Company rage thru the music of Ornette Coleman, Henry Mancini, Ennio Morricone, John Barry, and of course Mr. Zorn himself. They blaze through jazz, swing, blues, free jazz, noise, rock, thrash, and surf- often in the same song. This is great music for today's attention-span addled human. In fact, I think this would actually be a great album for youngsters with an interest in jazz to listen to. It is fast moving, often changing, and definitely never boring. I haven't listened to this CD for awhile (until today), and I forgot how enthralling it is.
`Naked City' was my first John Zorn album and it remains my favorite (along with his Occult masterpiece I.A.O.). This wonderful disc starts out with `Batman'; Zorn's uptempo envisioning of what Batman's theme should sound like- and it totally kicks ass. This is followed by Morricone's `The Sicilian Clan'. Zorn's saxophone sounds great on this track (and I usually HATE the saxophone). Next up is `You Will Be Shot', a nifty Zorn original that changes just about every ten seconds; touching on rock, noise/thrash, and blues/swing. I could go on and on; fruitlessly attempting to describe track after track. That however is beginning to seem increasingly pointless as I listen to this spectacular album. It sounds so cliché, but one must truly listen to this album for themselves to have any kind of understanding for how much ass it kicks.
One of the things that Mr. Zorn seems to have a knack for, is assembling the right band for the right project (much in the same way Miles Davis did). The band that he put together for `Naked City' was absolutely perfect, and up to the task of tackling these diverse, high energy arrangements. Bill Frisell on guitar, Wayne Horvitz on keys, Fred Firth on bass, and Joey Baron on skins were the perfect partners in crime for this wicked creation. I would've loved to catch this amazing band live.
This is a hell of an album. I own LOTS of music, and this is by far one of the most diverse releases I have. Not many bands could pull off the ridiculous changes present here. On paper, this should be a mess. However thanks to John Zorn's vision and skill (and that of his band mates) this works wonderfully- way better than it should. If you are interested in Zorn and have yet to delve into his intimidating and massive catalogue, this is a great place to start. If you are a fan of Zorn, you undoubtedly have this excellent and timeless release.

5 out of 5 stars Possibly The Best Experimental Jazz Record Ever Made............2005-11-08

There really isn't much you can say but totally unpredictable and absolutely ingenius from start to finish. One of those rare records that keeps you on the edge of your seat and you find yourself saying about every other minute "How the hell did he think of that?". The ideas are bountiful and over the top brilliant. Every record collection should have at least one copy of Can Tago Mago, Captain Beefheart Trout Mask Replica and Naked City by John Zorn. Amazing stuff.

One of the most eloquent singer-songwriters of the '70s heyday of the movement, Jackson Browne has always been a master of deciphering what is written on the human heart. On his first outing in six years, Browne again waxes autobiographical, wandering through his extensive interior landscape and transforming his pain into art. But after three decades, his songs of elusive love lost and found have become a little bit wry and world-weary. Witness the bittersweet title song, where the details are so crisp and well drawn that it's difficult to believe that he didn't just lift them from his own life. Similarly, "The Night Inside Me" returns to some of the wrenching themes of 1975's Late for the Sky with fresh anger. But it is Jackson Browne's turbulent romantic history--his elevation of the small, significant details that make up a life, or more poignantly, show one unraveling--that defines his work, and which is in full flower here. --Jaan Uhelszki

Album Description

2002 release & first album of all new songs from the singer/songwriter since 1996's Looking East. Ten tracks, including the first single, 'The Night Inside Me'. Elektra.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An Unmistakeable Sound.......2007-06-18

I bought The Naked Ride Home back when it was first issued and liked it immensely. But since I listen to so much different music, this stood forgotten for years in the CD cabinet until I recently got the urge to put it on and find out if I still like it as much as when I first bought it. The verdict? I do!
Though this is not a five-star effort, there are some very strong songs here which bring it close. When this CD came out, it had been ten years since Jackson Browne's last studio album was released. But on this you'll hear that Browne's talents did not rust in the interim. I think its his best album since Running On Empty and that's high praise.
My favorites here are the title cut, which lyrically and musically shouts Browne's name; The Night Inside of Me, a very appealing and fast paced rocker; the funky Walking Town; Sergio Leone, an epic paean to the famous Italian film-maker; and My Stunning Mystery Companion, a gentle relaxing song evocative of Browne's early days.
With nearly 40 years in the business, Jackson Browne has developed and maintained a sound that is unmistakeably his. And its a sound that never gets stale. After Browne's heyday in the 1970s, he seemd to get lost in politics and in occasional sloppy writing, but each of his albums have always had at least a few good songs to recommend them. With The Naked Ride Home, Browne's decade-long hiatus seems to have done him some good.
If you are an old Jackson Browne fan who drifted away when he was making schlock like Lawyers In Love, then this CD gives you a great excuse to give him another chance.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good, not the best........2006-11-29

I have been a Jackson Browne fan for about 30 years, I consider him the
John Updike of songwriting. My favorite JB album of the last 20 years was World in Motion, which I think is vastly underrated.
I recently purchased the 'Ride Home' cd, intrigued by the title of the
cd. JB has had so many songs about death that I thought the title was a a reference to death, either borrowed or created by the songwriter.
I was a bit disappointed to listen to the title track and discover that
there was nothing philisophical about the song. I didn't care for the cd upon first listen, however the 2nd time around I found it more interesting. I liked Sergio Leone and Don't You Want to be There,
both are very different from what I expect from JB. The latter could be recorded by a gospel artist, the lyrics are general enough to be open to differing interpretations. Overall, it's a keeper, probably ranking towards the middle of his output.

It took Browne over 10 years to put out an album of new material following "Looking East" in 1996. "Naked" is a decent enough comeback although not as good as much of his earlier material. The album begins with the title track which to me sounds like he is trying to recapture some of his romantic storytelling of yesteryear, but does not quite pull it off. In fact I feel the same way about much of this album. The material is good, but just not on the same level of similar things he has done previously. There are a few highlights. The politically charged "Casino Nation" finds Browne in fine topical form. "Walking Town" is a duet with Don Henley which is good. "Sergio Leone" is another cool song that meanders for almost 8 minutes before abruptly ending. I have seen other reviews that criticize this song for never really going anywhere and I would tend to agree. The writing style reminds me a lot of Warren Zevon, but although I think the meat of the song is great, it never really concludes which is a determent. This album is ok, but considering it took 12 years to come out, it probably could have been better.

5 out of 5 stars Took a year to realize the genius..............2005-10-04

First, as a 20 year fan of jackson browne, I think that i may be a bit unusual. I love his earlier stuff and own every one of his cd's plus many on vinyl, plus a few extremely hard to come by copies of some of his concerts. I will not argue with anyone about how his early work is sheer genius, but this album needs to get some more credit. Looking east and his other recent albums are very good also, but this one really stands out above them in my mind. The first few times i listened to the album i wasn't overly impressed with it. I instantly liked "night inside me" and "the naked ride home." As for the other songs, it took a few listens to really get into them. With some of the songs you really have to listen to them when you are in a certain mood to truly appreciate them. I have to disagree with one of the reviewers who decided to slam "for taking the trouble." The guitarwork on this song is amazing, and i wasn't surprised to see that it was keb" mo" playing on this track. It really takes a master like that to put that kind of feeling into a song. Anyways, this cd is excellent for a casual fan, dedicated fan, or just someone looking for some good tunes.

4 out of 5 stars I'll keep it short and sweet!.......2005-08-05

I'm no newcomer. I've been listening to Jackson since 'Doctor My Eyes' was first released. Yes, my favorites by him are his love stories, ballads, and acoustic paintings of life. I've also liked his rock 'n roll. For me, this is better than some of his more recent outings, and actually has some new blood to it. Casino Nation and Walking Town, for instance, are some of the most listenable tunes I've heard in a while. Jackson has been a rock 'n roller all along, and these are some of his best to date. He has assembled a band that has allowed him to do what he does best. I think some of the reviewers here don't really know what he's about. This is still it!!!!!!
