Album Description

Great White's sound has more in common with the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, and Led Zeppelin than that of their contemporaries. Disappointed. Not a single song really stands out. I feel the band was either lazy or didn't care...weak songs and most of them sounded like previously recorded songs with a few changes in the notes to make it sound like they were trying to be original but couldn't do it. I was hoping to hear some blues melted down with some hot riffs and new stuff--songs to rip your head off and also make you feel the blues like their older stuff. Sorry folks but a real let down, save your $$$ on this one.

It's good to see that GW is back,and,might I say,with a vengeance. I kind of quit listening to them after Once Bitten,but after listening to this latest release,it takes me back to what I believe was their best effort "Shot in the Dark".This one stands along beside it as a fine Rock 'n'roll release. It sounds like 1985 all over again,and in this case,that's a good thing!

This is as good as the "Can't Get There" album, and probably their best recording since 1992's "Psycho City". If you like their brand of blues-based hard rock, you will NOT be disappointed with this one. Standouts include the title track, "here goes my head again", and "standin' on the edge", but the whole album is particularly strong. No overly-modern or brand new style here, this is Great White simply doing more of what they've always done best.

These guys can still rock, as this effort proves, and I certainly hope they stick around for a long time.

This album has a more stripped down sound, and in fact it takes me back to earlier songs of theirs such as "Face the Day". It sounds very fresh, and unlike their last album, everything seems very consistent. It's not overproduced and attempting to be retro-chic like "Can't Get There From Here", it has its own space in the music. The playing is spot on, and I would recommend this even if you don't like their hairmetal days. Most Great White stuff has some redeeming value because of its blues influence, and here they shine. (Except, of course, for "Lovin' Kind" off of "Hooked", that was just hideous. And whatever song it was Dokken helped out on from their last album, that was a little lame.) "Back to the Rhythm" is tight, hot, and consistent...the kind of album you turn on and just leave on, because it's right. Support good music, get a copy! Otherwise don't be surprised if you keep hearing American Idol rejects on the radio....

The great Marvin Gaye has been the subject of many, many retrospectives, as someone with his greatness and talent deserves, and this is one of the best ones released to this date.

His great duets with Tammi Terrell are here ("If I Could Build My Whole World Around You," "You're All I Need To Get By," "Your Precious Love," and "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing"),his great 60's songs ("I Heard It Through The Grapevine", "Too Busy Thinking About My Baby,and "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)," and hias early 70's hits ("Mercy,Mercy Me," "Let's Get It On," and "Trouble Man."

This is a great Marvin Gaye collection.

Recorded in 1965 when "soul", as opposed to R&B, Motown and gospel, was starting to develop its own identity, "The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads" set an early reference point for this new style of music.

While his next album - "Otis Blue" - was more polished, more commercial and more successful, this often overlooked record is in many ways much more staisfying. Redding's singing is quite stunning, with heart-rending deliveries that make you believe that he means what he says. And, the back up from Booker T, Steve Cropper and the Stax "house band" is consistently creative and incisive. Many of the arrangements used here became standard reference points for the flood of "soul" (or, more aptly, "not really soul") records that were to follow. But, while Sam Cooke and Ray Charles fans may argue, this was where it all came together for the first time in a glorious, unified whole.

While the subsequent soul standards - "Mr Pitiful" and "That's How Strong My Love Is" - provide the opening and closing bookends, it is the numbers in-between that make this album really stand-out. If "soul" is the ability to capture emotions through music then, here it is. The sparse, single note piano arrangement and desperate lyrics on "It's Too Late" are breath-taking - alongside Ray Charles' "Someday Baby" one of the saddest tracks ever made; if the joy of love's enfatuation is what you're looking for then "Your One And Only Man" has it; and, for believable pleading, then "Come To Me" has never been bettered.

There's no R&B and, with the exception of "Mr Pitiful" (despite the title), no dance records. What there is, is a genuinely painful heart and... that's what "soul" - a much maligned musical label - is in fact all about.

If you like the slower tracks on "Otis Blue" then buy this... it won't disappoint.

I have been listeneng to this album since 1965 and I never tire of it. Why? "Nothing Can Change This Love" is possibly the best "soul" (not R&B, not blues, not urban, not gospel--but all of these together, and then some) song that was ever recorded. Otis's treatment of "Woman, Lover, Friend" will engage your blues sensibilities in new ways. "Home In Your Heart" will make you dance. "Keep Your Arms Around Me" will make you dance. Slowly. The soul music of Otis Redding journeys the peaks and valleys of life and speaks to them eloquently, if somewhat crudely. All the songs on this album are great. This is one CD that belongs in everyone's collection.

      I first bought this title on CD in 2000 when it was reissued, believing that it contained the long versions of Ain't No Mountain High Enough (6:16) and Love Hangover (7:47), according to the track listing on the back flyer. When I put this CD in my system to play those two songs, what I got instead were the edited versions and not the long versions!!! I felt like I was ripped off of whatever amount of money that I spent on this title. I notice that this title is not available (again), but if it ever does become available, yet again, the long versions of those two songs need to be on there. That is something that the folks at Motown need to work on (and improve on), as well as getting Diana's other solo album titles out on CD (they should not take this lightly; I'm serious). I also noticed that a new "greatest hits" title has just come out on August 29. I also should say that there are enough (actually way too many) "greatest hits" titles out. Let's just hope that this newly released "greatest hits" title (The Definitive Collection) is the last one to come out. The next Diana Ross albums that I would love to see reissued on CD are all of her other solo album titles as well as her Greatest Hits album from 1976. I took off two stars because of the edited versions of Love Hangover and Ain't No Mountain High Enough on this title.

      Three artist have charted 17 #1 hits: Elvis Presley,Michael Jackson(4 as part of the Jackson 5) and Mariah Carey,this includes her solo and non-solo recordings. The Beatle have charted 20 #1 hits, giving it's members Paul McCartney 29,George Harrison 23 John Lennon and Ringo Starr 22.
      I don't know how often Diana Ross has been sampled, or what chart positions those recordings reached on the Billboard Hot 100, but I do know that "Mo Money Mo Problems" credited to The Notorious B.I.G. featuring Puff Daddy and Mase samples Ross's "I'm Coming Out", "Mo" reached #1 for 2 weeks, 8-30 and 9-6-1997.       This is the best single-disc hits compilation of Diana Ross, that you'll find. It's got many of her solo hits and they all sound great and they all ARE great! They bring back a lot of memories, for me. This is must-have soul!

        A very interesting pianist, this. He's an entertainer as well as a serious musician and he plays entertaining pieces. He is also a first class composer of transcriptions. Some of his charming Gershwin transcriptions (for which he is rightly famous) are included on this CD.

        Earl Wild has an interesting pedigree in pianistic terms, having studied (if only briefly) with one of Liszt's many pupils. Technically he is often excellent, but some pieces seem to fall more easily under his fingers than others. For example, on another CD he makes rather a meal of Liszt's Grande Galope Chromatique but on this CD he plays superbly the fiendishly difficult Rachmaninoff arrangement of Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream Scherzo - a piece which never lets up in its demand for a deft touch, accuracy and speed. Whatismore, the Scherzo is recorded live, so no editing and barely a single wrong note or misplaced phrase. Bear in mind that Rachmaninoff himself is reputed to have had three takes at it before ending up with a recording he was satisfied with! Overall I don't think Wild has the same order of technical ability as Horowitz, Rachmaninoff, Rubinstein, Barere or Cziffra but he does demonstrate the vital ability to make certain pieces sound "right" in his hands. This certainly doesn't manifest itself in everything he plays, but more in the pieces where he seems to feel at home.

        He has obviously put a lot of thought and work into some of these recordings and I would single out the Schubert-Tausig March, Rigaudon, the Midsummer Night's Dream Scherzo, his Gershwin and Tschaikovsky transcriptions and the Blue Danube arabesques as particularly charming and well-performed. I doubt anyone could play his beautiful Embraceable You transcription as well as him. The 2nd Hungarian Rhapsody is also good - solidly played and with plenty of gypsy spirit, and he doesn't pull the piece about all over the place like most pianists do. And the Bumblebee isn't bad either. Also excellent is Gluck's Melodie d'Orphee. He plays this beautifully with exquisitely judged balance and tone. It's a shame some of the other pieces aren't quite as good - Isolde's Liebestod is off target, unfortunately.

        I think Earl Wild was one of the great transcribers and it's a shame he didn't write a lot more transcriptions because each one is a beautiful addition to the piano literature. His short and sweet transcription of the Pas de Quatre from Swan Lake (which he plays on this CD) is a total masterpiece. He also dared to play entertaining pieces and to indulge in showmanship, and why not? Why should a concert be a dry lecture? Yes, he is one of the great pianists but not because he had a unique sound or technique - more because he was a great and daring performer and because he made a contribution to piano literature for which the world ought to be grateful.

        This is an incredible CD, marred only by audience coughing and the unnecessary, deafening applause at the end of most cuts, reminiscent of a sitcom laugh track (hence the 4 star rating instead of 5); otherwise, it would have been perfect. The excellent selection of music and Wild's virtuoso playing are both marvelous. I was particularly taken with the Bach fuge and the splendid Gershwin transcriptions. Don't miss this one!

        If you've never heard Earl Wild before, this is a good starting point for you. His technique is impeccable and his mastery of tone allows him to play the most intricate music in the clearest manner. I must admit this disc didn't grab my attention from the very beginning. I found many of these recordings to be an inconsequential jingle-jangle of notes with no true meaning. I still feel that way about the two Thalberg pieces. He may have been Liszt's worthy pianistic rival, but as a composer he comes nowhere close to the great Abbée. Here these pieces get as good a performance as they are likely to get. Also I think Moszkowski's arrangement of the D minor Prelude and Fugue is greatly inferior to Busoni's. I don't care for the way it's played here either. It's too rushed for my taste and it sounds too homophonic, I don't hear the counterpoint of the fugue. This, I believe, is the fault of the arranger and performer alike. The rest of the recordings are excellent. Schulz-Evler's Arabesques are brilliantly played although my favourite recording will always be Jorge Bolet's. Godowsky's transcriptions are so complex and crowded with melodic lines and sonorities that it will leave you gasping for breath. Their performance demands technical powers of the highest caliber. Without that the music will drown in notes. Earl Wild posesses precicely this technique, and in his hands these pieces sound spectacular. Henri Herz's variations may lack profundity but are charming nonetheless. The gems on this disc are Wild's "Virtuoso Etudes" after Gershwin. "Concert Etudes" would have been an even more appropriate title, for despite all the virtuosity, harmonic and melodic invention is the true protagonist. The mood ranges from witty to atmospheric and together with Wild's technique and beautiful tone these pieces create a wonderful unioun. Last but definently not least, I would like to mention the Glinka-Balakirev Fantasy. Here the art of transcription is at its peak and as before, Wild is in full command. Here especially is where his musical gifts shines the brightest. He has it all, perfect legato playing, beautiful singing tone and crystal clear pedaling. A flawless performance. Earl Wild is without doubt a member of the pianistic elite, an old school romantic. I for one think he would have deserved a second unit in the "Great Pianists" series.

        5 out of 5 stars Redemption of the Transcription.......2000-02-24

        Be prepared: the first piece on this album weaves such a magical spell that you may be startled out of your chair by the applause at the end. The bulk of this collection is from a concert performance, and it was a humdinger. Wild not only displays his astonishing virtuosity, but demonstrates that many of these arrangements and transcriptions are valuable pieces of music in their own right. The Rameau becomes 20th-century neoclassicism through Godowsky and Wild. The Arabesques on the Blue Danube Waltzes becomes a more serious piece than the original ever was. And so on: the bottom line is it's an experience that you don't want to miss. The real gems of this collection, however, are not from the live recital: what I find myself going back to again and again are the Gershwin transcriptions by Wild himself. Breath-taking virtuosity, fascinating arrangements, a beautiful recorded sound, and some great tunes!

        It's wierd that I would like a cd like this... I'm more into bands like Smashing Pumpkins and Portishead, but Marvin really calls to me... I love it, buy it even if you don't think you like Marvin Gaye, because I bet you will anyway.

        This album is perfect for all you Marvin Gaye fans. Some of the songs that I've never heard before I'm now humming the words to. I wish "I Want You" was on this album, but other than it it's spectacular!
