fun original songs, gets the kids moving!.......2006-12-28
We have had a lot of fun with this CD. We originally checked it out of the local library and liked it so much that we purchased it. All of the songs are original. Some are better than others, but most are really fun and a nice change from some of the standard kid dance songs (e.g. YMCA, Head Shoulders Knees and Toes, Hokey Pokey). Most of the songs work just as well for only one or two kids as they do for a large group. It might be a lot of fun to use this CD as an ice breaker activity at a birthday party. Definitely recommended!

Albert King's Last Intentional Album For Stax.......2004-02-14
This album appeared one year after "Ill Play The Blues For You". It became his last LP for the Stax label. His next, now released as "The Blues Don't Change", became a compilation of single tracks he did at the end of the Stax era (much like "Born Under A Bad Sign" was a compilation of his first tracks). Albert was at the height of his playing ability and he had achieved some fame and influence as a Blues player (finally). Like B.B. King in "The Thrill is Gone", Albert had a string section included in a cut. Not just strings mind you, the Memphis Symphony Orchestra!
That is on "Flat Tire" a self-penned talking blues he excelled in (witness "Cold Feet"). He later appeared on Memphis TV with the Memphis Symphony and did several of his hits including "Personal Manager", the first Bluesman to do this, often this is overlooked. This should be released on DVD!!
This LP has many different styles and tempos on it. It sounds the way for the era of funk music and disco of the 1970s. It again shows the adaptablity and creativity of the Blues. Unlike his most creative LP: "I'll Play The Blues For You", this one is tight, perhaps a bit over produced for blues and less experimental, more commercial. However, it doesn't just emulate the previous grooves in "Ill Play the Blues".....it tried to take the blues to the era of seventies style music.
The tracks are great! Forget the dated (even then!!!!) title track. This minor key gem has a fabluous groove to it with soulful solos and the 1970's trademark: "I Wanna Get Down". Playing On Me is a straight soul blues that could have been a single. Little Milton is upstaged with this tune "Walking The Back Streets and Crying" written by Sandy Jones who wrote Albert first Stax hit "Laundromat Blues". This is a highlight in Albert's career. The tune has also been recorded by Otis Rush as a tribute to Albert.
"'Til My Back Ain't Got No Bone" is a great talking blues modernized for the seventies.(Little)Jimmy King did a good version of this on his "Live At Monterrey" set. "I Can't Hear Nothing But The Blues" was actually written (originally) by Howlin' Wolf's guitarist Hubert Sumlin. Albert's solo is powerful and one of the best of his career and it is in the high register, something he did not do much. Compare this with the tune "Finger On The Trigger" side on the CD "Funky London". It was an out-take with the same groove!
"Travelin Man" is an underrated King tune. It is short. but says a lot. It was designed as a dance tune and probably a single. The other big highlight of this set is the reworking of "Crosscut Saw" is Al Jackson on drums. It is worth the price of this CD for this track alone! The guitar in this masterpiece is the best Albert ever attained and his solos are more than awesome! Just listen to the controlled bending- that's where Hendrix got inspired and SRV tried to do (Many say SRV was the best Albert emulator, but he never did this!!!!)
"That's What the Blues Is All About" is a commercial (pop) blues that was a single (very successful, too). It features a 1970s style soul groove and some interesting lyrics. This is a must have CD for blues lovers. It is interesting that when a Stax subsidiary in Europe put out remastered reissues of some Stax stuff they put out this one instead of "I'll Play The Blues"....this says something. Get this recording. How about the cover photo. Albert with a 1970s Fender Strat like Hendrix played, maple neck, too. This just invites you to hear something different!
One of Albert's best Albums!.......2002-04-14
This cd is a must for Albert King's fans. All tracks are hot!
After purchasing Live Wire / Blues Power, this should be the next purchase! I love this CD because there are no bad tracks!
Tasty cuts like " Till my back ain't got no bone", " Flat tire", and " That's what the blues are all about" will convert you to believing that Albert King was the best of all time!
Hot Buttered Soul.......2000-09-15
I really like this CD. Albert King plays a clean guitar unadorned by effects. His leads are tastey jabs of the pentatonic scales. He has great control when he bends a string. He can do it quick or slow. This is a great album for anyone wanting to learn how to play Blues leads (cf CROSSCUT SAW). Every one of these songs is solid Blues played with passion. The band supporting him is awesome. They provide a steady beat for Albert King to launch his astral play. If you are interested in Chicago Blues played by a legendary guitarist, this CD will be interesting to you.
The funky-blues dogma........2000-04-01
With 'Travelling Man' as an all times classic, along with the breathtaking slow blues 'Walkin' the back streets and crying', and an astonishingly powerful final solo on ''til my back ain't got no bone', this album is a serious candidate to serve as an ultimate word on the funky-blues, seventies-inflected music of the future. Though always mumbling a little bit too much, Sir Albert sings better than ever on these tracks, and his guitar is as bluesy and funky as a six-strings version of James Brown. Add a right dose of Hammond organ and a perfectly orchestrated horn session, to obtain a virtually perfect, modern and highly enjoyable LP.

When Danny DeVito commissioned Irish producer David Holmes to provide the score for the film Out of Sight, he chose wisely. Holmes's gritty, urban dance music, first exposed on the sadly underrated The Film's Crap Let's Slash the Seats, is perfect for evoking scenes and atmospheres, yet it's interesting enough to stand on its own. For this album, Holmes and a friend wandered the streets of New York, collecting voices and noises; Holmes then assembled them into an imaginary soundtrack with the structures of modern dance music and the sonic qualities of rock and dub reggae. Let's Get Killed is a disjointed cut-up session that brings the grit and excitement of city life into your living room without leaving a drop of blood. --Matthew Corwine

electronic noodling at its best? I think not........2007-01-03
weeee, whooouhooouhooouhooo. What fun to play with my little sampling machine...H'mmm, what does this sound make? dueep? How cute. zoop, bweeet, kachouw chew chew chawang. Hootchy Koothcy what a hoot. I suppose this was interesting in 1998, I got it from the electronica section under the sign 'Best 1000 albums you must own.' Say no more, say no more, but this ain't one of 'em. Although, track 12 is really good. The rest sounds like a irishman's idea of what people with 'street cred' sound like (and I guess the sounds they listen to) in New York City. Really though that somewhat mythical gritty side of New York, manhattan-wise all but disappeared sometime in the 1980's to be replaced by a different kind of city where people from Chicago or, say, Ireland can feel safe trodding about purchasing incredibly expensive stuff from stores they can see just about anywheres now. I wouldn't recommend this album to anyone, although I wouldn't actively discourage a purchase either....just shrug and say I've heard better, way better. Doooweeep wapppppupupupbuzzoooey. Say, if you want to hear a better execution of this kind of thing try out the Japanese group 'Buffalo Daughter', specifically their first couple of albums. Same era but oh so much better.
The best of David Holmes.......2005-04-14
I found this CD rather acidentally, however, this record changed my music life. I will not waste your time saying all what was said bellow but the motto of this song for me is: A nightlife in NYC with all it brings. Buy it and give it a few chances, the mystery shall be revealed pretty soon, enjoy!!!
Genius.......2004-11-18
Yes... this IS the best thing David Holmes has ever released. It is a musical journey made up of break beats, random conversations, and sound bites that you might hear if you were to drive through a downtown area with your car window open! :)
This CD has gone down as a classic... just buy it!
The Soundtrack For the Film That never Was.............2003-11-27
This album was David Holmes second release and build on his previous album ("This Films Crap, Let's Slash the Seats"), with the emphasis on building immersive film scores/soundtracks, referencing Funky downtempo broken Beat's ("Let's get Killed") , Contemporary 70's Guitar melodramatic fusion ("My Mate Paul"), lively instrumental soul ("Gritty Shaker"), or even a reinterpretation of what the James Bond theme would sound like under the musical direction of David (Radio 7). There's even an expertly implemented stab at funky dance track ("Freaknik"), but as brilliantly devised as all this tracks are.....the one truly defining moment is arguably David's finest moment, the encapsulation of New York city night time life....The string, guitar, violin orchestrated arrangements of ("Don't Die Just Yet"), a 6 minute epic that showcases David impeccable ear for composition & creation of music, that is defiantly at odds with current trends in music, but remains a blissfully realised piece of music.
DJ turned music composer.......2002-06-14
Bought this years ago and enjoyed it then, and still occaionally do now. If you don't know, he did the soundtrack for OCEAN'S 11 and included a few of his own tracks(from this cd) in the movie remake. So if you enjoyed the sound found in that movie(hip, cool, sophisticated, jazzy, retro, funky, etc), seriously consider backtracking and getting this release. Especially since the OCEAN'S 11 soundtrack has edited versions of his tracks and contain dialogue from the movie(which may irritate some if you just want the songs). Standouts on this cd for me include:
*My Mate Paul--the coolest/hippest sounding track maybe. Should find its way in some spy movie soundtrack.
*Rodney Yates--ultra smooth tux-wearing, cocktail drinking song. Clooney's theme in O's11 as he walks out of prison in the opening credits.
*Radio 7--007 theme-inspired track. Ultra cool at first, slightly repetive later though.
*Freaknik--the big beat, breakbeat, 4-on-the-floor, breaker's extravaganza. funky as hell. the title implies it.
*Don't Die Just Yet--what I call a 'slow burn' song. it starts out slow and uneventful, but stick with it and when the strings kick in you'll be rewarded with a very moody and memorable track.
Also, Gritty Shaker was in O's11, Slashers Revenge has a haunting sound to it, Let's Get Killed is really long, and Caddell Returns is just...there. The rest are just samples/or intros, not actual tracks. Overall, if you enjoy this type of music and are not afraid to pick up a 5-year old release, i strongly recommend you do.

Intelligent dance-oriented songs.......2004-11-06
Funky Green Dogs' debut album "Get Fired Up" is an awesome album of Progressive House with some Tribal beats in the mix. Includes the awesome hits "The Way", "Fired Up", "Some Kind of Love " and "Until the Day." The vocals are very good as well as the lyrics. This was only the beginning of what of what the Murk boys could do. Recommended.
Dont hate on this album!.......2004-01-19
There are more hot tunes than not on this album! All the haters of this album were the very ones shakin their a** all night long on the dance floor whenever they played it in the club. The very ones who can sing "Fired Up" and "The Way" and even "So Good" word for word. Ok, I admit the lyrics aren't that difficult to learn after listening for 45 seconds of play but still! They're catchy!! Hot beats! As far as composition the interlude tracks made no sense to me, however this album still gets me moving. The tribal sounds are still as fresh today on this album as they were back in the mid 90's when it released. And Pamela Williams vocals are strong and evoke a feeling of freedom and empowerment from within on every track. I feel that this is definately a upbead, feelgood cd worth having in your collection.
okay effort........2000-01-14
i first became aware of fgd in the early 90's with a track called "reach for me". the group was actually called "funky green dogs from outer space" at the time and their sound was fresh and live. when i saw that they had a full-length album, i snapped it up immediately - i was thrilled to find it. however, i wasn't thrilled, but not exactly disappointed by the album when i first listened to it. it just did not contain songs with the same drive and energy as their earlier works. admittedly over time, the cd has grown on me and makes good background music, but i don't ever select it as a "warm-up" cd for getting me in the mood for dancing and it is far from being a favourite.
Repetitive, monotonous.......1999-02-25
I bought this because of the fabulous singles, "Fired Up" and "Until the Day". I now know why that's all we heard in the clubs. The same dull lyric over and over again, along with the same dull beat. And what is with the almost nil mention of their only asset, vocalist Pamela Williams, in the credits.
These Green Dogs are'nt funky enough!.......1998-08-25
This Cd was a real disapointment after I heard good things about the two dj's that comprise the funky green dogs. I was expecting something original and off the wall. This Cd is a collection of R&B songs not groundbreaking dance music. It was just not funky enough for me.

Album Description
Get Your Lie Straight is chronologically the last of a triumvirate of releases dedicated to Galaxy Records (see also "Diggin' Gold" elsewhere in this issue). In case anyone needs reminding, Galaxy was the much-maligned black music subsidiary of Fantasy Records. While Creedence was storming the charts in the late 1960s and earning the parent label buckets of overdue rock'n'roll kudos (not to mention cold hard cash), the earthy Galaxy imprint was quietly issuing one hot R&B record after another.
