Album Description

Lovers of classic R&B and jazz have an 'unbeatable' buffet of sensitively arranged original compositions and cover songs to choose from. Ray Fuller, who is magnetically drawn to the drama in any good piece of music, hand-picked pieces that have inspired him for decades only to refashion in his own sweet way and thus called on the elite of musical craftsman who are friends first, musicians second—Fuller states, "Every one here is a master of texture and space."

Coltrane's timeless "Naima", features the brilliantly subdued use of Branford Marsalis on soprano sax. "Friday", featuring George Duke's funky solo was co-written with Jeff Lorber, and is a likely radio `smash' hit! On the classic "Superstar", stellar vocalist Phil Perry lends his uniquely emotive ad-libs to this most impassioned version. Perry returns on a version of The Isley Brothers' "Work To Do", which might make Ron Isley himself jealous! "Spanish Flyer", co-composed with Dave Kochanski, is a lush evocation of Mediterranean delights! "Weeper's Thang" and "Speak Brother", signature Fuller compositions, are `funky-deep' grooves featuring saxman Everette Harp and Duke, respectively.

There is so much more with which to sit back and relax or get up on the dance floor and forget your cares.

I first saw Ray Fuller at the Dolphin Days benefit jazz festival at Hilton Waikoloa Beach Resort in 2004. His CD was available and as I expected his artistic style and music is certainly one of a kind...awesome!

I just recently saw Euge Groove in concert, he had Ray Fuller playing in his group, This Man Was Simple Awesome!!! But thats not the best, the next day My family and I ran into Mr. Fuller and his lovely wife at a restaurant I thanked him for such a wonderful show. Before I knew it he was at our table chatting with us. So down to earth, classy. I had to get his cd and I am not disappointed he's great.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS CD.......2006-12-06

This is one CD I never tire of! Everyone I have turned on to this CD feels the same way! The music is timeless.

    3 out of 5 stars Eh.......2006-05-09

While it's a good sampler cd (as are all the Essential Blues from the House of Blues series), I have one complaint:
The formating of the discs from this pressing seem to be VERY tempermental for some computer cd drives.

    5 out of 5 stars USA's Huge Musical Contribution.......2002-12-19

Every time I hear a really great blues recording, like this one, I realize anew that this is where we achieved our finest moment in making a permanent, unassailable contribution to modern music. If you hear other, more modern, and most especially WHITE singers, doing these numbers, they are NOT the ones that did it first. Black Americans are the absolute center of this music and these women, every single one of them, is the real thing, the first modern musical artists. I really liked the idea too of breaking these albums up into special sectors with this one focusing solely on the authentic blues women. The male artists in this genre are very different from the women so it really makes sense to listen to them separately. Sometimes I feel as if the UKers might be leaving us in the dust musically but not when I listen to this album and the others like it, forming the core of America's musical contribution to the best of what we hear today. I think this would make an especially great gift to a friend in another country who thinks our major contribution was Elvis Presley. In fact, it might even make a great gift for Americans who remain oblivious to this national heritage and contribution!

    5 out of 5 stars Great Retrospective.......2001-12-20

This is a great CD set for the Blues afficionato as well as those just getting their feet wet. The songs cover the spectrum from classic to contemporary, and the recording sounds excellent. The closest thing I have to a complaint about it is that it might have been nice if the songs were organized more chronologically so that the musical and stylistic evolutions were more gradual and kinder to the listening ear. Still, this is by far my favorite collection, and my most listened to blues CD.

5 out of 5 stars Dynamite music, great fun........1999-08-19

This is without a doubt one of the most enjoyable and fun CD sets I've heard in a long time. I am even ordering two more sets for a friend to give as gifts. It would be hard to pick favorites here, but Ruth Brown, Candye Kane, Alberta Hunter and Bessie Smith would be at the top. Anyone who likes vintage and contemporary blues would do well to buy this set.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Beware.......2005-11-21

beware....this isn't the Mastercuts album as shown but the MVP series with different artwork so if you were wishing to try and complete your Mastercuts Classic Jazz Funk Series (vols1-7) you won't be able to do it here. I know because I made that mistake.....
Musically it is the same track listing so therefore it really merits 5 stars but you have to dock a few points for the incorrect listing!

    5 out of 5 stars Dig Deep.......2003-06-20

This is THE album that piqued my interest in Jazz. After listening to it for the last 5 years, it still piques that passion.

The MVP series, unfortunately discontinued, provides this standout volume with grooves that reach in deep. The first four songs set a markedly serious, philosophical tone and alone would mark any album collection worthy. The final 8 tracks, though decidedly more upbeat, retain the same deep-grooved feeling of the first 4 tracks.

Highlights: 'You Know You Know' is a classic among classics. 'The Creator Has a Master Plan' is reminiscent of John Coltrane's 'Acknowledgement (From a Love Supreme)'. 'Journey in Satchidananda' evokes an Indian sense of the spiritual while 'Nautilus' eases us from the philosophical to the easier sounds to follow.

    A great album.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A delicious set of some of the best Blue Note jazz........2000-01-17

Want some of the best jazz around--? Budget impaired, like myself? Fortunately, for us, there's this Blue Note Records collection of the best from favorites like Donald Byrd, Lou Donaldson, and Grant Green. Now, the powers that be at EMI-Capitol thought to get some sells of this great jazz by packaging it as a "sample this" offering to hip-hoppers/rap ranconteurs. It turns out that they needn't have done so. The various volumes and the box set with Vols 1-4 has some great work like Bobbi Humphrey's "Harlem River Drive" and Herbie Hancock's "Olilloqui Valley". The music, in other words, can really stand alone...I would urge those interested in sampling to listen to these greats not to lift a groove, but to help themselves in learning how to make their own groove....Dig?
