"Great CD".......2005-10-24
If you like old school ballads this is the cd you want to have!
Sweet soul exemplified!.......2002-11-05
From the sleeper "Yesterday's Dreams" to the sweet soul classic "Million Dollars", all from their one lp on Ebony Sounds Records, and 45s from the same label are included on this disc. Finding a four-leaf clover is easier than finding the mint lp, the disc is a must for soul collectors.

Customer Reviews:
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS CD.......2006-12-06
This is one CD I never tire of! Everyone I have turned on to this CD feels the same way! The music is timeless.
Eh.......2006-05-09
While it's a good sampler cd (as are all the Essential Blues from the House of Blues series), I have one complaint:
The formating of the discs from this pressing seem to be VERY tempermental for some computer cd drives.
USA's Huge Musical Contribution.......2002-12-19
Every time I hear a really great blues recording, like this one, I realize anew that this is where we achieved our finest moment in making a permanent, unassailable contribution to modern music. If you hear other, more modern, and most especially WHITE singers, doing these numbers, they are NOT the ones that did it first. Black Americans are the absolute center of this music and these women, every single one of them, is the real thing, the first modern musical artists. I really liked the idea too of breaking these albums up into special sectors with this one focusing solely on the authentic blues women. The male artists in this genre are very different from the women so it really makes sense to listen to them separately. Sometimes I feel as if the UKers might be leaving us in the dust musically but not when I listen to this album and the others like it, forming the core of America's musical contribution to the best of what we hear today. I think this would make an especially great gift to a friend in another country who thinks our major contribution was Elvis Presley. In fact, it might even make a great gift for Americans who remain oblivious to this national heritage and contribution!
Great Retrospective.......2001-12-20
This is a great CD set for the Blues afficionato as well as those just getting their feet wet. The songs cover the spectrum from classic to contemporary, and the recording sounds excellent. The closest thing I have to a complaint about it is that it might have been nice if the songs were organized more chronologically so that the musical and stylistic evolutions were more gradual and kinder to the listening ear. Still, this is by far my favorite collection, and my most listened to blues CD.
Dynamite music, great fun........1999-08-19
This is without a doubt one of the most enjoyable and fun CD sets I've heard in a long time. I am even ordering two more sets for a friend to give as gifts. It would be hard to pick favorites here, but Ruth Brown, Candye Kane, Alberta Hunter and Bessie Smith would be at the top. Anyone who likes vintage and contemporary blues would do well to buy this set.

Customer Reviews:
A Shining Addition to Any Collection.......2004-03-12
The consolidation of record companies is generally bad, but this 3-CD box set was only possible because MCA acquired the rights to some outstanding early "race" record labels (Vocalion, Decca) and classy early R&B (e.g. Chess). The result is an intelligent, sequenced collection that is much more than a jarring, random assortment of songs by blues masters. Starting with the Delta blues, the mix seems subtly slanted in favor of bawdy, roadhouse-style blues performances--why it's the devil's music and you can't stay away from it. Whether it's Peetie Wheatstraw, Louis Jordan, John Lee Hooker or Etta James, these performances will seduce you. Good quality sound throughout (even the old stuff), with a handsome booklet.
An excellent blues collection.......2003-07-10
I own tons of blues CD's and records but I find myself going back to this collection over and over again. The songs represent some of the strongest recordings by the masters of the blues. Whether your interest is delta blues, piano blues, jump blues, Chicago blues or smooth urban blues; you'll find plenty to peak your ear. If you're lucky as I was, you'll find some unfamiliar and great artists to lead you down new musical roads. Some of my personal favorites are: That's No Way to Get Along - Robert Wilkins, What's the Matter with the Mill? - Kansas Joe McCoy, Floating Bridge - Sleepy John Estes, Mother Earth - Memphis Slim, It Serves You Right to Suffer - John Lee Hooker- just to name a few. Since I've got a 1,000 word limit in this review it prevents me from listing every great track on the collection and all the reasons you should purchase it. Suffice to say, buy it now and you won't be sorry!
Best Collection of Classic Blues!.......1999-04-11
I have purchased a lot of Blues recordings recently, but for a single purchase, this collection would be the best. It has the one or two most recognized songs from the most prominent Blues artists from 1927 to 1969, without the "scratches" of the old '78's!!!

Customer Reviews:
Constant Rotation.......2006-04-09
I love this collection! Saturday Night Fish Fry, I Got An Uncle In Harlem, and Fifteen Minute Intermission are my favorites but practically every song on these two discs is special. Do yourself a favor and nab it because music this good, be it from the 20s, 30s, 40s, or whatever, should never be without a listener. "We were rockin'...!"
A Blues Classic!.......1999-08-26
I first heard this album 25 years ago, thanks to some very good friends. It was a favorite back then, one of those albums you played constantly, always finding something time and again that made it special. It's one of those rare CD's that simply does not have a bad cut on it. You'll find that you not only want a hot dog for your roll, but you'll also want this CD for your Blues/Swing/Jazz collection!

Desert Island CD.......2003-11-30
This is definitely one of those "desert island" CD's. You know, if you were stuck on a desert island, what's one of the CD's you'd have to have with you? This would be one of them for sure. I've been listening to this CD for YEARS now, and it just doesn't get stale. It's also beautifully and creatively packaged... This one's a collector's item for sure, which is why it's so hard to find!

Customer Reviews:
A little too eclectic.......2004-08-05
Well, the entire Blues Masters series is a "sampler" actually.
Anyway, this untitled volume draws from almost every kind of blues and blues-related music, from the ancient recording of a Texas prison camp work gang's rendition of "Go Down Old Hannah" to Stevie Ray Vaughan's funky 80s blues-rocker "Pride And Joy".
It's rather too ecletic, actually...Count Basie is squeezed in between Stevie Ray Vaughan and blues shouter Big Joe Turner, gentle old songster John Hurt is here with his classic 1928 single "Candy Man", and Howlin' Wolf, Elmore James, John Lee Hooker, Sonny Boy Williamson, and B.B. King are missing.
The music is good, sure, but this strange collection doesn't really do the Blues Masters series (or blues music in general) justice.
Wow. A Great Introduction.......2000-08-04
I must admit, this is only my second blues CD. The only other one I own is Rhino's excellent Johnny "Guitar" Watson compilation. I bought that being a Frank Zappa fanatic, and loving his vocals on One Size Fits All. I can safely say, if I didn't get into FZ, I wouldn't have have gotten into the blues or jazz. So, I can't say how effective this is at covering all the bases of blues, or what important artists were or weren't included, I can just say how good it is. I won't go into detail in the songs, because I couldn't describe them as well as could, say, Inca Roads by Zappa.
I want to talk about how much I enjoyed this. It really taught me more about the blues then I had imagined. It seems that misinformation is rampant to the uninitiated. I expected all blues to be weighty, slow, heavy, and sorrowfull numbers. Shake Your Money Maker, Candy Man, Shake, Rattle, and Roll, and quite a few others smash this myth. I really wasn't prepared for the emotional depth and artistic range covered on this CD. It has given me a greater respect for the blues, an intrest in many blues artists, and I hope to collect the whole series soon. Plese snap up this limited edition CD if you have any intrest in the Blues but never got around to picking anything up.

great compilation!.......2000-07-07
Great stuff. If I were making my own collection of my all time favorites a good share of these would make it. I've had this a couple years and still enjoy listening to it more often than anything else I've got.
