This three-decade anthology of Temptations hits tries to cover a lot of time in the short span of 11 cuts. In fact, after 1975 or so, the Temptations weren't so temptin' when it came to scoring major hits. True, the early part of the 1970s produced several major milestones--the gossamer "Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me)," the dramatic "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone," and the psychedelic protest song "Ball of Confusion"--and those cuts alone could pretty much justify the budget price of this set. The '80s are represented here by only two cuts, the disco-ish "Treat Her Like a Lady" and "Standing on the Top" (an incongruous match with punk-funk king Rick James). Only the ultraslick ballad "Stay," which samples some of their earlier hit, "My Girl," represents the '90s. Ultimately, this attempt to emphasize the act's longevity backfires. --Daniel Durchholz

5 out of 5 stars Great appetizer.......2006-10-22

Everybody knows that the Temptations have enough musical food to feed every person on the continent of Africa. However,if you are looking for the perfect appetizer this is it...most people have the main coarse...stop complaining enjoy the music.

A wholly inadequate attempt to chronicle the music of the "Temptations" for the last 30 years. A "collection" of '70's, '80's and '90's "Tempts" songs, this package just recycles the vintage Tempt hits in yet another format. I'm a classic Tempts fan (Ruffin, Kendricks, Paul Williams, Melvin and Otis w/ Dennis later on), but I've listened to them over all these years. Where is "Lady Soul"? Where is "Soul to Soul"? Their '95 Richard Perry produced "For Lovers Only" is a great great album, why isn't anything ("Some Enchanted Evening", "At Last") from it included on this collection? Motown has chosen to keep going to the well over and over to get the same "water" again and again. To put it in this new container doesn't change it one bit. The best of this collection is from the classic "60's" period. The 25 years of music making since '75 is shamelessly shortchanged. The songs from '75-'00 may not be as popular as the classics, but this package purports to be about THAT PERIOD and they should be included in it. Ron Tyson, Ali Woodson, and company deserve better.

I should probably quit writing these Millennium Series reviews, but it's so infuriating. In hindsight it is obvious what was going to happen. Everyone was complaining about all the great tracks left off the Temptations first Millennium Series release. So six months later MCA releases Vol. 2.

But let's look at this closely. Do you buy both Millennium Series releases or the 2-disc Temptations Anthology? If you go the Millennium route:

1) You save a few bucks.

2) Volume 2 gives you "Stay" from 1998's Phoenix Rising. [This is the only track not to be found on Anthology.]

3) You have 22 songs--including 18 of their 37 Top 40 hits. [Among the missing are the Top Tens "Runaway Child, Running Wild" and "All I Need.]

If you buy Anthology:

1) You spend a couple extra dollars.

2) You get twice as many songs--46 instead of 22.

3) You get all of their Top Tens and 33 of their 37 Top 40 hits.

The Temptations were part of the triple crown of Motown's male vocal groups along with The Miracles and The Four Tops and these songs belong in any serious collector's music library. Just do the math BEFORE you buy.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the best songs of the era.......2000-05-23

Again I have the honor of writing the first review of a great album and perhaps letting some people in on a great collection. Of course, anyone that is interested in The Temptations has probably already bought the "Anthology" or any other number of Greatest Hits albums.

As a beginner, I enjoy this set of seventies and on tunes a lot. They are very edgy and political. "Ball Of Confusion" is a great social commentary and proves the great artist that they are. It also has a slightly rock edge. "Psychedelic Shock" has a great funk edge yet keeps those sixties harmonies intact. "Just My Imagination" is the guys back to that sixties signature soft sound. Not innovative considering the tracks before, but it is one of those all time great Motown ballads. "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" is rightfully one of their most artistically recognized songs. It is one of those great R&B rock fusions that are just historical. It is also extremely intelligent writing. The rest of the seventies songs are OK, but seem to really want to capture the magic of "Papa..." which can't be bottled. The last memorable track on there is the cool large sound of a Rick James production in "Standing On the Top", which can rightfully be written of as a James hit rather than a Temptations landmark hit. "Treat Her Like A Lady" is a fun eighties production which is heavily dated (more so than the big standards) but is really enjoyable pop. "Stay" is a rehash of "My Girl" but makes a good attempt at being modern with its romantic suggestions.

This album is a good sum up of the career in the later days of The Temptations. I think that anyone that likes a good R&B album would highly appreciate this album.
