5 out of 5 stars La Toya Jackson 1980.......2007-06-05

Major kudos to Iain and the powers that be at Cherry Red for this one! I never thought I would live to see the day this album would be on CD! Now we need "My Special Love".

3 out of 5 stars Great Production, Below Average Singer.......2007-05-05

I would have to disagree with many of these comments posted here on La Toya Jackson. I had to chuckle over La Toya comments on the liner notes. She blamed everyone for the way the album turned out except herself. The fact is the songs were very good for that time period and her vocals were the problem. Producers let stuff slide when Toya simply could not nail the notes. It's already clear she doesn't possess strong pipes but had given good vocal coaching she could have delivered a better performance.....

5 out of 5 stars Feelin' the funk!.......2006-09-01

Most likely the best cd released in 2006...26 years old and it still beats the likes of Paris, Jessica, Kelly, Pink, Christina, and Pussycat Dolls....toy throws it down FO' REAL!

If you feel the funk and night time lover are FIERCE..."funk" is a funky disco stomper, and "night time lover" is a darker, more soulful disco duet. both are perfect to shake your @ss with lots of class to!

love has passed you by/lovely is she are wonderful soulful ballads...very quiet storm and "a taste of you" is very Barry White esque! lovely songs to make sweet love to your man underneath the stars to!

are you ready, save your love and " if i ain't got it" are nice soul/r&b fillers! good driving music!

"My Special Love", latoya's next cd is much more consistant, but lacks the ANTHEM track that if If you feel the funk.

Make sure to check out:

my special love (82)
Heart don't lie (84)
Imagination (86)
YOu're gonna get rocked (88)
bad girl (89)
no relations (91)
from nashville to you (93)
stop in the name of love (95)

Plus latoya will be startin' over soon!!!!!!!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars It was alright.......2006-08-11

This was much better than Bad Girl, I'd strongly recomend this for LaToya fans. It did have some very good songs, like night time lover, that's one of my favorites, But honestly, I'd like them to release My special Love because it has stay the night, which (I feel) is the second best song she ever did.

5 out of 5 stars Great debut album from Latoya Jackson on CD!.......2006-08-11

Cherry Red Records has released La Toya Jackson's self-titled 1980 debut album on CD for the very first time. This was the first time the music world had heard from La Toya as a solo artist. 1980 was around the end of the disco era, Le Toya's album is very good. Some of the songs have a disco feel to them, like "Save Your Love," and others are straight R&B joints.

La Toya worked with some big names for her first album. The album includes writing by Billy Ocean, Michael Jackson, and a young Janet Jackson. The artists who lend their vocal and musical accomplishments to the album are equally impressive. Ray Parker Jr., Patrice Rushen, Michael Jackson, Ollie Brown, and Stevie Wonder among other artists.

LaToya's album is solid and impressive. Vocally, Letoya can sing just as good as any of her brothers and sisters. It's surprising that this album isn't more highly regarded. The CD interior artwork is beautiful. The disc also includes new liner notes and Latoya's UK discography.

4 out of 5 stars Now, I know I'm the only one, but...........2005-05-13

Does any body think that on Toya's album song #11(What's a Girl To Do?) sounds exactly like Craig David's (2 Steps Back) on his Slicker Than Average cd in 2002? I just thought the beats sounded faintly similar to one another. Anyways, her cd is great. I like 11 out of the 15 songs. I really wish she had made I Do Pt. 2 a single. It would've been good to hear on the radio. I wonder why she fell off and disappeared? I didn't really care to much for the very first song on the cd, which became her second single, but overall the cd wasn't that bad for her to just vanish like that. My FAVS are: The Truth, Don't Make Me, I Messed Up, Moving On, Book Of Love, W.A.G.T.D., and of course the last song.

5 out of 5 stars SOLID DEBUT!!!.......2005-01-29

A VERY GOOD START FOR HER,ALTHOUGH SHE IS A ONE HIT WONDER HER ALBUM DOESNT SEEM SO. hER ALBUM IS LIKE AALIYAHS 2001/MYA MOODRING ALBUMS A GREAT VARIETY OF SONG CHOICES LIKE CLUB SONGS RUB SONGS ETC.

I DO, AND NO MATTA WHAT ARE THE 2 BEST SONGS

5 out of 5 stars Great Debut Album.......2004-04-14

This is a really good CD. Toya is just another artist who's talented and has a banging CD with now promotion behind her. Arista records just promotes who they want to.

5 out of 5 stars Very good.......2004-01-15

A very good debut of Toya. Her songs like "I do" or "No matta what" are very catchy and groovy. "The truth" features beats of LL Cool J's "Something like a phenomenon". This album has deserved much more attention because it's pretty good: good quality songs, beats and a good voice

4 out of 5 stars great debut.......2003-07-18

4 out of 5 stars Cool Song.......2001-07-10

I just listened to this song, and I've seen the video on MTV. I think it's a pretty cool song. Not one of my favorites, but it's okay.

5 out of 5 stars Do you feel the same way "I Do"???.......2001-06-03

Toya is a great singer that seams like she should be a part of Destiny's Child but her she is making it on her own with her first hot single "I Do". This hottie is stopping traffic with this song, I have heard it all over the radio and it keeps growing. As if you couldn't get enough of the fantastic original their is a sequel.

Track Listing:

1.) I Do!! (Radio Mix) (3:36) = This is the original version that you have probably heard on the radio or else were. This single is gonna tear up the charts.

2.) I Do!! (Video Edit) (3:46) = The video version is the most essential because if has the beat of the dance break on this one. The video proves that she can not only sing but she can dance too.

3.) I Do Part. 2 (Featuring Murphy Lee Of St. Lunatics) (4:49) = This version is more R&B and a bit slower than the original. This version has fresh new recorded vocals and a new hot beat and a special guest on it.

4.) I Do!! (Pete Avila's Ghetto Fab Club Mix) (5:47) = This remix is a full on dance mix that sounds fab in the club. This remix sounds very Disco and sound great with Toya's diva voice.

"I Do!!" Wonder if you be feelin' this track like I do, I could see it in your eyes you want to.

5 out of 5 stars even better.......2001-05-27

track 1: radio mix-it's of course what you hear on the radio. it is not the one you hear on the video.

track 2: video edit-this is the version with that special remix in it like the one in the video. this is one of the best.

track 3: part 2- it's alright. it is my least favorite. i'll have to get used to it. the song is still a upbeat song. the lyrics are changed and the chorus is resung and rearranged. it has a nice bass line.

track 4: the club mix- great club mix. it has that kind of disco type beat to it. the vocals are slowed down a little. the beat is similar to madonna's old songs that are clubbed.

i still wish the cd was enhanced but what can you do. toya has a bright future. she has the flow of a younger Aaliyah and the sexiness of the older Aaliyah.

4 out of 5 stars I think I've been rocked!.......2007-04-01

La Toya Jackson struggled throughout her musical career to find her niche. Unfortunately, she didn't find it in hip hop music, but this was definetely a strong attempt. The first four tracks feature excellent production by hip hop hit-making team Full Force (who later went on to produce some of the most popular hip hop songs of all time; i.e. "Don't Phunk with My Heart" by the Black Eyed Peas). All four of the Full Force tracks are excellent, with my personal favorites being the should-have-been anthem "You Blew" and the intoxicating "Such A Wicked Love". The remainder of the album has somewhat good production as well, some by the European pop songwriting team Stock Aitken Waterman, particularly evident on "(Ain't Nobody Loves You) Like I Do" which could have easily been a huge European hit with better promotion. The lead single from the album, "You're Gonna Get Rocked!", enjoyed some mild success on U.S. charts, but the album failed to even chart. The real culprit here is not so much La Toya's limited vocals, but the fact that the songs don't cater to them. Particularly in "You Blew", it is quite obvious that the song could have been a hit, had it been sung by a woman with stronger vocals. Producers rely on triple-layering of La Toya's voice to make the track sound stronger - leaving much of the album sounding like a demo rather than a completed studio album. Unfortunately, La Toya's light and whispy voice is hard to take seriously as the voice of a street-smart hip hop goddess. If you are the type of listener who can look past vocals and enjoy the production, this album is perfect for you. The majority of the songs are very well-written and produced, and the music videos filmed for "You're Gonna Get Rocked!" and "(Ain't Nobody Loves You) Like I Do" are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars There You Just Got Rocked, By La Toya.......2006-04-11

I've been having this La Toya Jackson album for a long time now & never wrote a review about it. It's great, the music is very hip & very 80s Pop. I wish for La Toya it was a big hit, but this album was not. This album contains what the 80s was all about, & that was to dance and have a great time. Also the whole album contains highlights, but the real ones are "You're Gonna Get Rocked" which has a fun R&B rhythm, "Such A Wicked Love", which is my favorite on here, "Just Say No" which was one of the 80s offical anti-drug songs, "(Tell Me) She Means Nothing To You" - my second favorite, has a good rhythm which changes sometimes thoughout the song. Give it a try, it's very fun to dance to & is very similar to Janet's "Control" album.

1 out of 5 stars She should be overshadowed by Janet and Michael.......2005-01-12

Okay I'll give her one star for trying but seriously, do you guys actually think she can sing? It sounds like she's trying too hard to sound like Janet. And someone thought that this album was better than Janet's Control album. LOL!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Review for "La Toya" by La Toya Jackson.......2004-10-14

I am not the only one here who knows how underrated La Toya's albums are. This is perhaps the best one out of all. La Toya's "new" sound was just as good, if not better, than Janet Jackson's "Control", which had been released 2 years prior to this album. (Janet's "Rhythm Nation 1814" would be released a year following the release of "La Toya".) All of the songs have that "plugged in" sound from the eighties that we all loved. It's a shame that this item is out of stock... try and find it on ebay. (It won't be titled "You're Gonna Get Rocked!"... it will be entitled "La Toya", which is the correct name of the album.) I can't wait for her latest album "Startin' Over". I hope she continues to pump out music even though she is so underrated and overshadowed by Michael and Janet.

5 out of 5 stars Loving La Toya.......2004-08-17

I completely agree with the previous reviewer, who claims after listening to this album, you'll want to run out and get all of La Toya's albums. The only problem is, it is nearly impossible to find ANY of her albums. Even scanning through her catalog here, on Amazon, notice how many of them are "Out of Stock".

La Toya's "underratedness" is why her albums are hard to find. She even has a new album called "Startin' Over". Actually, I use the term "new" loosely, since the album was recorded nearly 2 years ago, but distribution problems continue to delay its release. The last time I checked (about a week ago), even her record company (JaTail Records), which produced the new CD, has inaccurate information on their website regarding "Startin' Over", as they claim the CD will be released in the summer of 2003 (one year ago). La Toya was on Larry King in March 2003, discussing the soon-to-be-released CD; yet, here we are, almost a year and a half later, and the album has still not been released.

Unfortunately, because she continues to remain in the huge sibling shadows of Michael and Janet, I doubt La Toya will ever truly receive the attention and credit that she deserves.

Yo fool. Keep yer Britney and Shakira and Christine. LaToya is the Goddess Queen of Pop that'll make you drop. She's better than Michael, Janet, Tito, and Jermane put together. On this album she combines pop, soul, and blues. She mixes it together with a hot dose of LaToya ... appeal and whalla! A Platinum album that leaps from the shelves.

If there was any justice in the world, Latoya would be the reigning Queen of music. She rulz da school, fool.

This album is the same as "Bad Girl", just another name & cover picture: The ballad "Someday" shows that La Toya vocally can do well. The production is weak. The songs are ok. It's dancey pop.
