Mahogany [Import]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
You know those movies that seemed really, really awesome when you were a teenager? Then, when you saw them again as a adult, you recognized them for the romantic dreck they always were? Mahogany exemplifies the breed. Made in 1975, Mahogany is mired in tedious melodrama that is not enhanced by a predictable and sexist ending. Diana Ross, a poverty-stricken young woman, pulls herself up by her camisole straps until she is at the top of the fashion world. Along the way she meets terrible people who want to use her. They break her heart. She has trouble bouncing back. One of those troubled people who seem to flock to Ross's unstable character is a deranged photographer, played with wild abandonment by Anthony Perkins. His psychotic performance gives this film its only energy. Ross remains unfulfilled until she finds love with inappropriate Billy Dee Williams, who shows none of his usual charisma. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Diversity for the maturing Classic Rock audiophile.......2007-07-16
I'm usually the last in line when it comes to live albums, and overly long performances with few lyrics and covers sound like bad ideas, too. But these guys pull it off with a nuanced, sublime style that just sounds oh so great!
You don't get a second chance to create a first impression, so start with "Red House" (Jimi Hendrix), where borrowing from jazzy George Benson ("On Broadway") brings the crowd to life for the first of many times.
It's not a bang-you-over-the-head albums, but it does get my highest recommendation for the maturing Classic Rock fan with adequate audio equipment - don't forget to set your equalizer to flat.
Hearing is believing.......2007-06-22
If you haven't been blown away be a great live album since the Allman Bros. at Filmore East, or Hendrix' Band of Gypsies, or even Santana's Moonflower then it's time you got this.
Just look at all the positive feedback below!
Real Live-F Marino and Mahogany Rush.......2007-05-12
Breathless!! That's how this recording leaves you. Like a master painter this group leaves deft touches on their musical canvas. There is no lover of classic rock that can sit through "Poppy" and not be moved. Both a homage to those who tread before them and an innovative guitar tour de force; this cut alone makes the disc worthwhile.
Speachless.......2007-05-09
I've never heard anything like this. A guitarscape of three dimensional presentation that is unforgettable. Frank makes his guitar speak like a living, breathing thing. It's as if his guitar is a part of his body. After listening to these CD's I had to just sit and wait until I could bring myself back from the mind trip that Frank had taken me. This rendition of "He's Calling" is astonishing. Simply astounding. You want entertainment? Well let me tell you, this is it. I said it before and I'll say it again. I've never heard anything like this.
Amazing!.......2007-04-13
if you were to take all of the following guitarists; hendrix, stevie ray, satriani, vai, malmsteen, clapton, roy buchanan, duane allman, tony macalpine, santana, frusciante, gary moore, eric johnson, et. al., and combined them into just one guitarist, the end result would be something very close to frank marino. beautiful melodies and gorgeous tone? it's here. psychadelic, overdriven, blues/rock on par with anything you've heard? it's on here. blistering, cutting edge guitar, in the same vein as vai, satch, etc.? it's here. the man simply encompasses all of it in a way that no other single guitarist, that i am aware of, does. this cd is incredible in its scope. parts of it will make the hair on your arms stand up. parts of it will touch you deep in your soul and may even move you to tears. there are other times when all you can do is shake your head in disbelief and laugh. amazingly gifted musician.

I'd give it 10 stars if I could........2007-07-13
For years this was the only Frank Marino album I had. I just figured that it doesn't get any better than this. Well recently FM proved me wrong. "RealLIVE" is more than twice the length of this and every bit as worthy, if not better. Having said that, "Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush Live" will never grow old. Here is an excellent mix of originals and blues covers. Far from growing tedious with repeated listens, this still stands as a high water mark for any band and exactly what you'd expect from an accomplished player and song writer like Marino.
Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush Live.......2007-05-12
First rate recording with lots of nods to its rock and roll roots. Touches of Santana, the Doors, Hendrix and many other pioneers of rock can be found by the careful listener. The guitar work is flawless and Purple Haze says it all. A definite "add" recommendation for any serious rock and roll collector.
What in the World is this....??.......2007-05-06
I believe it was early 1978 and me and some friends were all big Styx fans, and the night had finally got here for the show. We were a little late getting to the venue, but no big deal...right?..... Styx wouldn't be coming on for another hour or so. Well, after we got inside, we heard this strange, amazing sound being performed inside. Who is this? What is this? Why didn't we know about this band? We heard like the last two or three songs of Mahogany Rush which was the back up band for Styx. Nothing against Styx, but Mahogany Rush completely blew them away, and the next phase of my musical education had begun. I didn't miss many back up bands from that night on! The reincarnation of Jimi Hendrix?..... maybe so!
Best Live Album in Classic Rock History.......2007-02-13
I saw Frank Marino & Mahogony Rush live in El Paso, Texas in 1978. I did not expect much becasue I never heard any of their albums before, but had saw this album in a records store and thought Mahogony Rush was an odd name for a band. The were playing with Rick Derringer and blew him totally out of the building. They played this album from start to finish. Wow what a concert experience. Only Black Sabbath (with Ozzie in 1979) and Page and Plant's Walking Into Clarksdale Tour match it for in live performances that I have been a witness too. This album is awesome from start to finish.
I was AT this concert!!!.......2007-02-07
This is definitely one of the best live albums EVER. I was at the taping of one of the cuts on this album in Tampa Florida, and I NEVER forgot that show. In a word AWESOME!!!!!!!

Mahogany Soul perfectly describes the rich, deep, and lived-in music Angie Stone makes. This veteran singer/songwriter, who was one-third of rap trio Sequence, led acid-jazz combo Vertical Hold, and had a major hand in creating D'Angelo's Brown Sugar, follows up 1999's critically acclaimed Black Diamond with another collection of grown-up R&B that's sexy, satisfying, and smart. Along with (wo)manning the helm herself, Stone links up with like-minded visionaries. Chief among them are Raphael Saadiq, who produced the single "Brotha," which moves with a purposeful, rugged, old-soul swagger, and Andrea Martin, coproducer with Swizz Beatz on the vibrant and aching "Wish I Didn't Miss You," which features a dope "Backstabbers" loop and Stone's husky vocals. At 17 cuts, there's a bit of drag, but not enough to deter you from Stone's wise and determined ease, and on the gritty "Twenty Dollars," Stone gives all those R&B princesses something to really chew on. --Amy Linden

Great Great come back cd after Black Diamond.......2007-05-18
Still sounds good in 2007 and that is what makes a good cd. I do not like all the songs on this cd, example Bottles And Cans is a crap track but because of songs like, The Ingredients Of Love, Pissed Off, More Than a Woman, Mad Issues and 20 Dollars I just had to gave it five stars.
If you are looking for more good music, check out Chrisette Michele's...I Am..and Lina's...The Inner Beauty Movement.

Again, Angie Stone remains A Rock. Music for when you're happy, sad, horny, stressed, angry, PMSin. Music for woman, man and everything in between. Angie Stone is the master of her own soulful world. The man who gave this CD to me has no idea how abolutely addicted I am to Mahogany Soul. Fabulous, just fabulous.
ONLY GAVE 5 STARS BECAUSE ***10 STARS*** is not an option!!.......2005-12-21
THIS is the BEST R&B/NEO album... definitely the best released of the year... but it's one of the best in History... Angie Stone is a REMARKABLE talent with an AMAZING voice... I do not think this album received the level of recognition it deserved. Overall, Angie Stone is one of the strongest voices in R&B/NEO soul to date. I can't pick a Favorite because they are all equally awesome... I give two big, big, big thumbs up to this album!!!!!!!!!! Just put it in, Press play! No need to skip tracks.
it deserves 5 stars for brotha alone.......2005-08-24
god i love that song (despite what Kosmo77 says) considering its a breath of fresh air from all the black male bashing that contemparary pop/R&B artists put out .but i also love i wish i didn't miss you anymore.angie's voice is verry old school and soothing to the heart and soul.she reminds you of the lady who had the powerfull solo during the church choir.its to bad that she doesn't get much recognition as her hip-pop/R&B counterparts like you know who.eitherway this is a great cd and i hope she sticks around unlike other great artists that get snubbed, and shelved by their record labels because they don't know what to do with them.in short get this cd if you like good R&b soul music.

Old friend from the past........2007-07-26
Tales of the Unexpected, had not heard this since I bought the Vinyl album, when it first came out. I had to get the cd, and it`s like seeing an old friend long lost. What can I say the music is as good sounding as it was back then. Buy it!
GOOD SMOOTH BLUES GUITAR/BASS/DRUMS/BAND.......2007-03-11
FRANK AND THE BAND ARE ALWAYS COMPLIMENTING EACH OTHERS MUSICAL TALENTS.
Mahogany Rush's Finest!.......2006-08-04
"Tales of the Unexpected," one part studio, one part live, is my favorite Mahogany Rush album. The studio section includes two originals & two covers. The originals "Sister Change" & "Tales of the Unexpected" has Marino stretching out his farthest. Both songs almost bordering on heavy fusion. Marino just cuts out solid magnificent mountains of jazzy guitar runs at the speed of light, he is at once heavy, ethereal, concise & commanding, & his rhythm section cuts it through out following Frank like a car chase down a winding mountain road. "Norwegian Wood" & "All Along the Watchtower" add even more of an ethereal twist than was on the originals. Honestly, Marino made these songs his own with his unique approch, making these songs float on a bed of sweetly scented dream like airwaves carressing my ears & entering my brain like billowing tufts of opium smoke. I was addicted to their dreamy embrace.
The live section features heavy, heavy, gut wrenching blues/metal originals with "Down, Down, Down" & "Door of Illusion" hitting that blues, funk, metal path that was only trodden down by fellow contemporaries Robin Trower & Pat Travers this convincingly in the 70's... hell, at anytime. The live work here on par with Mahogany Rush's excellent "Live" album, leaving one battered & bruised & begging for more!
"Tales of the Unexpected" is Marino's crowning achievement, never to be topped in my opinion. Frank put out numerous albums afterward, but each album just seemed to lose focus to the point Frank was parodying himself. Funny enough, is was not until 2000 with the excellent "Eye of the Strom" that Marino captured past glories.
Marino has always been an artist that was hit & miss, his failures just that, but his success's, oh so sweet! Frank & his band Mahogany Rush can now be looked at as a band that was definitely born of Hendrix, but also pushed the grand man's ideas, & eventually came on to their own being, one of low valleys, but also soaring peaks that beg to be climbed.
BEST OF BOTH WORLDS.......2006-04-19
I OWN THIS LP ON VINYL AND NOW CD-THIS IS PURELY A DOUBLE BLESSING- ONE SIDE IS LIVE MATERIAL AND THE OTHER STUDIO MATERIAL .YOU CAN TELL THAT FRANK MARINO AND MAHOGANY RUSH ARE EQUALLY TALENTED IN BOTH ARENA'S ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER IS NOTE FOR NOTE THE SAME SONG HENDRIX WROTE WITH FEW DISCREPENCIES BETWEEN THEM-HONESTLY I THINK HIS VERSION OF NORWEGIAN WOOD IS BETTER THAN THE BEATLES COVER.THEN YOU HEAR SISTER CHANGE AND REALIZE HE HAS HIS OWN TALENTED SONG WRITING ABILITIES AND THE TITLE CUT ONLY SHOWCASES HIS IN STUDIO ABILITY WITH THE INSTRUMENT OF WONDER THE 69 GIBSON SG- THEN YOU FLIP THE LP OVER-DON'T TRY THAT WITH THE CD- LIVE ROCK AND ROLL TO THE CORE-DOOR OF ILLUSION-BOTTOM OF THE BARREL - WOMAN -ALL ORIGINAL TUNES THAT KEEP ON ROCKING EVEN WHEN YOU STOP LISTENING -GO FIGURE-THE LYRICS TO WOMAN ARE GOING THROUGH MY HEAD NOW- BUT I LOVE HER JUST THE SAME- YOU ACTUALLY NEED THIS ALBUM IF YOU DON'T HAVE IT YET -I CAN ONLY THINK OF MAYBE 1 OR 2 OTHER ALBUMS THAT IS ONE HALF LIVE AND ONE HALF STUDIO BUT ONE TOTAL EXPERIENCE - ONE OF THE SHOWS I SAW IN ATLANTA WAS AFTER THIS ALBUM AND I REMENBER SEEING A GUY WITH A T-SHIRT THAT HAD THIS ARTWORK ON IT AND STILL WONDER TODAY WHY DID I NOT BUY ONE THEN --------IN THE UNIVERSE OF GUTIAR PLAYERS THEY ALL BOW DOWN TO THE KING-

In that he's a young male jazz vocalist, Kevin Mahogany is a rare bird. But even among that group, Kennedy is rarer still. As much a child of Motown as bebop, Mahogany slows things way down on his newest, My Romance. Vocal gymnastics, command of scat's history, and general chops are hardly the point with Mahogany, as he creates romantic moods aplenty. Bob James plays piano with just the right mix of wandering and staying close to the melody's heart. Meanwhile, Mahogany's lush, low-end vocals rebound between James's piano, Billy Kilson's drums, and Charles Fambrough's bass. Vocal lines develop in slow motion with a deliberate ease. Mahogany sounds as much at times like Marvin Gaye as Barry White. Then, in the upper ranges, he comes off like a velvety Herb Jeffries. A tag-team duo of saxophonists handles the horn duties on several tracks, with Michael Brecker taking on the tenor parts and Kirk Whalum providing exceptional alto. --Andrew Bartlett
Customer Reviews:
is a classic in male vocal jazz.......2006-06-16
I truly agree with the reviewers on the merits of the album. Kevin's voice and the instrumentations of the songs makes this a rare collectors item.. "I apologize" is a version I like better that Billie's Eckestine, and he is the Man.
As a travelling salesman on the road here in Venezuela, I had the occasion to play this cds while giving the lift to rural people in the lonely roads, they were all curious as to who sings so well.. so it has the transcendental touch
As Good As It Gets.......2003-11-13
Kevin Mahogany's "My Romance" album is a delight and a wonder. Not only does he take some classic torch songs ("I Apologize" and the title song among others), but he treats us to some wonderful songs that are rarely found even in the complete discographies of Sinatra, Bennett, Torme, etc. For example, he takes the song "How Did She Look?" and spins it into one of the most incredible gut-wrenchers, a song to rival Joe Williams version of "Here's That Rainy Day." One of my students brought me the CD and I could not stop playing it for three hours. I am awed by this talent. Cabaret singing has gone out of style, with the exception of Bobby Short and a few others. Too quiet, is my guess. And that is a real loss. Because I can remember when Chicago clubs did nothing but this kind of music: London House; Mister Kelly's; Blue Note; Black Orchid; and so forth. Now it is all amplifiers and deafening sound. What a loss! But what a joy to find Kevin Mahogany. May he have a long and storied career.
WoW!.......2000-02-22
Kevin Mahogany's voice is sooooo smoooth that I have trouble concentrating on other things when MY ROMANCE is on the CD player. The guy is the ultimate New York crooner. I picture myself sitting at a quiet booth at the Carlysle or the Algonquin curled up with a VSOP cognac and my honey, spellbound by Kevin's magic. It's awesome!
Something Very Special.......2000-02-10
Kevin Mahogany is a brand new find for me. Saw him on Public TV at the Newport Jazz Festival and decided to pick up My Romance. Mahogany is super smooth on this one. Performs numbers made famous by others and tops them - adds a couple I've never heard before but now love. This guy has got it all, superb vocal quality, a romantic smoothness that makes a girl's knees grow weak and that unique very, very special quality that makes someone a star. I prefer Mahogany even to the great Joe Williams. Once you have My Romance you will definitely want to have others.
Good!.......2000-01-25
Kevin Mahagony is a rare bird. A deep, great voice that knows to sing. This album is fine, with great interpetations of teach me tonight, everything is yours, can i come in and even the overdone (though really great) lush life. The sound of the album is sparse, very "cool", exactly right for a late night listening. I admire Kevin's changing from CD to CD, broadening his repetoire. Let him keep them coming!

Robert Altman's Kansas City is basically a 1930s gangster film, but much of the action takes place in the Hey Hey Club, a black-owned nightclub and gambling den where an all-day, all-night jam session is in progress, featuring such figures as Lester Young (played by Joshua Redman), Hawkins (Craig Handy), Ben Webster (James Carter), Basie (Cyrus Chestnut), Mary Lou Williams (Geri Allen), Hershel Evans (David Murray), Freddie Green (Mark Whitfield), Walter Page (Ron Carter), and Jimmy Rushing (Kevin Mahogany). Kansas City in the mid-1930s was a thriving jazz center and home to legendary bands led by Basie, Bennie Moten, Andy Kirk, and Jay McShann. The music here comes from that period and is done in that style. Producer Hal Willner and music director Butch Morris encouraged a loose atmosphere, with lots of give and take, even shouts of approval, and the musicians respond by playing for the immediate moment, rather than for some dimly imagined history. --Geoffrey Himes
Customer Reviews:
Hang Out at the Hey Hey Club .......2006-02-08
I didn't like Altman's movie at all. But my God, this soundtrack is amazing. Between the swing and bebop eras of jazz was Kansas City -- and you can hear strains of both genres in this album. The music can be loud, racuous -- and a hell of a lot of fun. It also can be soulful and sweet.
This is what jazz is all about. And, like other reviewers, I've put this on at parties and people have also asked me what this was. It stands out that much musically and it's worth every penny.

Current musicians like Joshua Redman, James Carter and Mark Whitfield do a wonderful recreation of the music of Lester Young, Count Basie, Jimmy Rushing, Coleman Hawkins, etc. It all takes place in a bar in K.C. and the audience enhances its authenticity. I love this type of jazz, full of soul and blues.
I ALMOST FELL DOWN.......2004-04-16
While channel surfing one day I saw the documentary about this music and nearly fell on the floor. A mixture of eager young jazz musicians (Redman, Mahogany, Dare etc) teamed with seasoned ones like David Newman making music of an earlier generation. The background "noise" takes a good 3 or 4 seconds to get used to, then you realize it's all part of the free flowing atmosphere that makes this such a brilliant recording.
The recording is a great collaboration and shows just how great jazz can really be. The musicianship, the spirit, the.. oh hell.. everything is top notch.
I've put this on during parties and people stop and go "what's that?"
Mahogany's vocals and individual solos on "I left my baby"and the dueling saxes on "Yeah, Man" are just incredible.
Just buy it, you'll be so glad you did.
Amazing! Amazing! Amazing!.......2004-03-10
The playing on this album is virtuosic, and powerful, and moving, and just wonderful. This is one of the rare jazz recordings in which you can really hear how much fun the musicians are having. These guys are monsters, Craig Handy, Josh Redman, James Carter, Don Byron, Olu Dara, Nicholas Payton, Dave Newman, David Murray, Curtis Fowlkes; just killer, in your face playing from master musicians. And Kevin Mahogany, on 'I Left My Baby', is fantastic; and the 'bone solo, and the sax cadenza at the end - WOW. In my opinion, if you only own 2 jazz recordings, make it Kind Of Blue, and this one. This is the kind of expression jazz is all about. Dig it.

Mahogany's Best & The Rest .......2007-07-12
IV is probably Mahogany's overall best album, but it could be debated. IV is also Mahogany's funkiest record. There's a strong funk influence on many of the songs, such as their popular "Jive" number. It's by far one of the greatest and most eclectic funk-rock records of the seventies, that I have heard. But there is more than just funk, there's a lot of variation, including a soft number, progressive/fusion noodlings,
and the hard driving rock of "Sexie Little Annie", which is in my opinion one of their most entertaining songs. The record is with out a doubt an overlooked and underrated seventies artifact. To the unintiated: Singer/Guitar Player Frankie Marino's singing style vaguely can be reminding of Jimi Hendrix, who was without a doubt an influence on Marino's guitar playing as well, but who wasn't influenced by Jimi Hendrix? Frank Marino took rock guitar playing to a places blocks from Jimi's ballpark. He had the skill and finesse which few matched in the hard-rock circles, a real nice style. Thats a fact Jack. A player reflected by a Strange Universe
Who needs drugs?.......2007-02-02
Did you ever wonder what it's like to have your state of mind chemically altered? Grab your headphones and turn this up! This studio album exudes the energy of a live performance and it has some KILLER mastering. From the high energy of LITTLE SEXY ANNIE to the "lay down and die" lilting of IT'S BEGUN TO RAIN, this is one of the best (in my opinion) from a band that's been around in one form or another for over 30 years. Frank Marino is still cranking out some great music today but you should hear where he's coming from to really appreciate all he's done.
Progressive Rock.......2007-01-08
A classic! One of the best of progressive rock from the '70s. No hit song, but one of the best is Dragonfly, (I just saw Mahogany Rush October 2006 and they played it exceptionally). In the style of Jimi Hendrix, yet complete originals from Frank Marino and his band.

The Montreal Days.......2006-10-24
I remember being a Montreal High sophomore back in 1970 and everyone was talking about this band playing the high school dance circuit called Mahogany Rush. The rumor was was that the guitarist had been "tripping" and had somehow been rescued from his bad trip by the spirit of Jimi Hendrix, miraculously learning guitar overnight when he came back. The big single at the time was a 45 called "Buddy" which recounts this story in part. The band made a surprise appearance at our school's morning assembly to advertise for the weekend dance. I was blown away. Even at 16, Frank Marino could play well enough to legitimize the legend. Although none of the songs off his first album appear on this compilation I still recommend it...just thought I'd add this historical footnote.
Good Anthology Of Hendrix Styled Canadian Guitarist.......2002-03-09
Frank Marino was a Canadian guitarist who adeptly played in a Hendrix hippy/psychedelic guitar style with his band Mahogany Rush during the seventies. "Dragonfly: The Best Of Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush" only features his tenure at CBS. His work before and after this period is not included here. Marino's style especially later in his CBS tenure tended to be more overblown and bombastic than the work of another Hendrix aficionado Robin Trower. His playing was also not as bluesy and more metallic than Hendrix fan Stevie Ray Vaughan. That being said he still produced some interesting material and his albums always featured some great playing. Reportedly he used to participate in guitar "cutting" contests with Ted Nugent and Mark Pinera (Iron Butterfly). For most of his tenure at CBS his band Mahogany Rush was a power trio with Paul Harwood on bass and Jim Ayoub on skins. Most of his best tunes are included here such as originals like "Jive Baby", "Dragonfly", "Sister Change" and "Woman". Covers like "Johnny B. Goode", "All Along The Watchtower", and "Roadhouse Blues" prove he could also interpret the material of others. He was perhaps at his best in a live context and there are a number of cuts from his "Live" lp and a live version of "I'm A King Bee" from the rare "California Jam" lp.
I was disappointed that a few cuts like his covers of "Purple Haze" (often his concert encore) and "Rock Me Baby" were not included. I also miss "The Answer" and "Broken Heart Blues" and somewhat oddly one of his last singles for CBS "Strange Dreams" was omitted. This set provides a good sample Marino's playing and style. Rumor has it according to his web site that CBS is planning a multi-disk box set later in the year. Hopefully my favorites which were omitted from this compilation will be added to that set if it is released along with some unissued live and studio tracks. If like what you hear on this set your next step should be the purchase of the "Live" lp.
Ignore BluesDuke`s scathing review !.......2002-03-07
This guy BluesDuke speaks well but I`m not convinced he has the qualifications to be overly critical of Frank Marino or any other artist.Frank is much more talented than BluesDuke gives him credit for.So again I say disregard BluesDukes review completely! Let BluesDuke strum his 3 chords on an old silvertone with his big beer belly hangin out,we will listen to Frank Marino!
It's The One To Have If You Absolutely Must Have Him.......2000-11-30
Like Robin Trower, Frank Marino was one of a few thousand guitarists who fell to Jimi Hendrix's feet and couldn't stand up on their own again if you replaced their legs with robotic limbs. Unlike Trower, though, Frank Marino was so much flash that what little substance he bore came through when he played the blues. And even there it doesn't exactly make him much more than a hit-and-run bystander. In other words, in terms of real quality or depth Marino doesn't even come close to "For Earth Below," never mind the Electric Ladykiller Himself...
But if you really have to have something of him in the hard rock library, stay strictly with this one. It's useful as a kind of one-stop guitar lesson for those players who absolutely insist that shredding the daylights out of the fretboard is the only way to play the instrument - Marino was nothing if not a technically overendowed player. And, to whomever's credit, the selection is done quite prudently. By the time Marino and company (Mahogany Rush didn't always have Marino's name top billed, and they were just a workaday power trio who probably got in over their heads when they got the recording contract their presumed bar audiences were naive enough to believe they deserved) are finished here, it's over before you begin contemplating putting them under arrest for shameless, self-congratulatory derivation.
And at least you don't have to put up with an entire album's worth of philosophical pretentiousness (think "World Anthem"), either. Best leave that to Canada's other Rushing power trio - the one without the Mahogany in the name, that is - and let this one remain the pleasant memory of misspent youth they were really destined to become in the first place. For a Hendrix sycophant with some substance and a damn sight better feeling for the blues, the word is Stevie Ray Vaughan.
BEFORE THERE WAS SHRED!.......2000-10-10
Before there was shred, before anyone knew what to label it or how to market it, there was Frank Marino. But he was much more then a speed freak, as this retrospective (which traces his band's late-seventies Columbia years) clearly demonstrates. Songs like "Dragonfly" (a haunting bit of psychedelic funk) and "Requiem For a Sinner" (with it's droney, Middle-Eastern overtones and Marino's amazing Arabic-tinged guitar solo) are not merely testaments to his agility but also to his adventurous and creative spirit. Of course,Frank often just liked to boogie, as he most dramatically does on the scathing live versions of "Johnny B. Goode" and "Who Do Ya Love," where he plays some of the fastest and intense blues licks ever heard by man. Long may Marino wail!

frank marino picked up where jimi hendrix left off, i say this very losely. there has been alot of comparison to hendrix but frank does have his own style and should not be labled a hendrix clone. this album if you want to buy one frank marino and mahogany rush album this is it. you get 3 lps 2 cds.from start to finish classic rock at its best. these came out in the early 70s and frank was only 16 or 17 on maxoom his first album. you listen to these cds and the sound is amazing, today much music is polished up and over produced. this is over 30 years old and it sounds so raw but yet so good. what all great music should sound like. after hearing these albums im sure you will be like me and by all the rest. frank marino is a musicains musician and he plays for the people. he is an overlooked and forgoten guitar legend. hear the music feel the music and judge for yourself. frank marino is a true living legend.
Another Gem from Canada........2004-01-11
A compilation of the first 3 albums. Frank Marino is a superb guitar player and the music is good. This is what its all about.
a fan since the mid-1970s.......2003-08-01
Maxoom never impressed me BUT "Child of the Novelty" and "Strange Universe" impress me (and still do). Frank is a phenominal guitar player. I have also seen him in person in concert on only three occasions (drat!). If you love an absolutely searing screaming rock-and-roll, Jimi Hendrix-type, lead guitar then buy this now. However, Frank plays Jimi better than Jimi played Jimi. Purists will hate me for saying that. Of course, all of the tunes on these recordings are Frank's compositions. IMHO, his best albums are:
- "Child of the Novelty",
- "Strange Universe",
- "Mahogany Rush IV",
- "Mahogany Rush Live".
I have them all on vinyl and finding them on CD has been difficult.
...and the guitar gods made love..........2001-07-14
Just noticed the availability of this 3-album 2-CD set and, having been a fan of Mahogany Rush from their humble beginnings, I would first and foremost recommend this mainly for the acquisition of CHILD OF THE NOVELTY. This was the first MH album I ever heard and, along with MH IV (
<--their masterpiece), knocked me out with Frank's unbelievable guitar-playing and unabashed cloning of Hendrix's style of singing and playing. It would have been cool, if Jimi would have lived, to know what he thought of this great, underrated band. Tracks like "Look Outside" and "Changing" sound like they could have come right off the ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? album. I kept hoping for a chance to see this band perform live in concert, but never got that chance. Hopefully, the boys remain together today, in some incarnation, and will tour the clubs or casinos as other 70's bands have done. I agree with the assessments of other reviewers: if you have heard great things about MH, this would be the good primer for you. I was not overly impressed with MAXOOM...but then, it was their first album and the guys were just getting their chops down. CHILD, on the other hand, kicks booty from start to finish. Not a bad song on the whole album. STRANGE UNIVERSE showed their inevitable growth, but overall didn't turn my crank as strongly as CHILD (with the exception of the sheer majesty of its title track).
If this 2-CD collection impresses you, then fasten your seat belt and latch on to a copy of MH IV, their 4th album and, IMO, their equivalent of a Sgt. Pepper album.

Album Description
Big Band includes ten selections featuring Mahagony fronting a variety of large groups. Mahogany jousts with songs both familiar and obscure, throwing the gauntlet down to any contenders for the jazz vocal crown. If you love jazz vocals-the album is a definite keeper; if you love jazz vocals powered by big bands-this disc is manna from heaven. Big Band is sure to be remembered when Grammy time and year-end bests come around.

Just Gets Better n Better.......2006-02-19
Anyone who doesn't have a complete Kevin Mahagony section in their collection is truly missing out on one of the finest jazz vocalists around today. His selections on every cd reflect the classy and tasteful talent he is. Thank you Mr. Mahogany for still another pleasurable listening session!
I don't get the rave reviews.......2005-06-09
I like big band/standards..the "old guys" (Sinatra,Cole,Armstrong) and some of the "new cats" as well (Rene Marie,Krall, some of Karrin Allyson's stuff), but this CD doesn't do a whole lot for me.
The arrangements are interesting at times though I'm not sure I'd always call them "big band". "Moonlight in Vermont" in particular has the "funk lite" feel that brings to mind George Benson a lot quicker than Artie Shaw. Those mentioning Mahogany's scat skills are correct though he indulges them way too often. Scat is best as a spice, not as a main ingredient. As to his voice, it's pleasant but not distinctive...I don't think I could "pick it out of a lineup". Have him and Wayne Brady sing the same thing and I'm not sure I could distinguish them.
HIGHLIGHTS:
Taking "It Don't Mean a Thing" into Latin territory is unique and makes it a flavourful track. Danny Barber acquits himself well on the trumpet solo. The Lou Rawls-ish croon that Mahogany adopts for Monk's "Ruby" seems to be his calling. His voice is very attuned to that style and he should really consider aiming his focus towards that more and away from the dubious scat-a-thons. "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" isn't really "big band"...it's just James Williams' piano accompanying Mahogany but it swings nicely. It's a keeper.
LOWS:
"Moonlight in Vermont" sounds right out of smooth jazz purgatory to my ears. I'm yawning before I get halfway through it. Scat runs amok through "Centerpiece". Others are praising "One for my Baby" but this is another one that makes me press the "skip" button. There's simply no "edge" to Mahogany's voice to make me feel the lyric. "Three Little Words" has a nicely slinky bossa nova melody but the lyrics are too pedestrian for me to like the song.
BOTTOM LINE:
While I'm not ready to consign these songs to the past, Mahogany's versions aren't the best way to bring them into the modern age. Most of this just doesn't "wow" me.
I'd suggest giving Rene Marie a listen instead to hear how you can reinterpret a song in a fresh way and still respect the tradition that birthed it.
Unbeleebable.......2005-06-04
This is the finest big band album I have heard in years. Forget all the milk toast "standards" singers you think were good. This is the real deal. Big band was never intended to be background dinner music. This isn't.
HOT Big Band, Fantasic Vocals.......2005-04-28
Kevin Mahogany, one of the best jazz singers out there. Kevin has put together a cookin, swingin big band. His treatements of classic jazz/blues songs are not too be missed. Check out Don't Get Around Much Anymore and my personal favorite, It's Alright With Me. The band and Kevin's instrument just mesh. An incredible recording and should be record of the year.
Mahogany's best (IMO).......2005-04-12
I'm familiar with Kevin Mahogany from "Another Time/Another Place" and "Pussy Cat Dues". Of the three, I think this one is clearly his best, and it strikes me at a low 5-star level.
What makes this one stand out in the Mahogany catologue, IMO, are the charts. The big band charts (primarily of the Frank Mantooth Jazz Orchestra) are sensational, particularly "Moonlight in Vermont" and "One for My Baby" (swung totally oppositely from Sinatra's famous version), as well as the infectious chart of Cole Porter's "It's Alright With Me" by the "Big City Swing Big Band", and the silky smooth "Three Little Words" by the Manteeth. The charts alone are virtually worth the price of the album.
As for Kevin Mahogany himself, the yellow sticker on the c.d. case cover announces, from the New York Times, "Nature unleases a gale force voice." In a way, that is true. Mr. Mahogany has a big baritone range, and he is particularly impressive in the upper part of his range. Witness how he belts out "One for My Baby" in a second-tenor range without straining or cracking, for example. The man can also scat. Even though this album was recorded in the studio, his scatting on "Centerpiece" is so dramatically impressive that I expected to hear rousing ovations twice during the performance. And the man can growl as well. His gutteral attacks on "In the Evening" very definitely evoked Jimmy Rushing, and well demonstrate his versatility.
My reservation with Kevin Mahogany is that he sings with a very covered voice. As a result, he is very smooth, but when he is in mid-range, I detect a bit of lacking warmth. To use a gem analogy, his voice is like a rock that has been in the tumbler a little bit too long; it has absolutely no rough edges, but it lacks a shine. If Mr. Mahogany could retrain his voice to sing with more vibrancy, while not losing the very admirable control that he has, he would be the best male popular singer in any genre today. As it is, he is "merely" one of the best. And for this album, that's plenty good enough. Highly recommended. RC
