About the Artist
Jessy Dixon, one of today's foremost Christian music talents, has a message that is simple yet profound. "Jesus is the answer for the world today."
With his hundreds if concerts around the world, his television outreach on his own shows plus the massive exposure on the Bill Gaither HomeComing tv specials , with more than two dozen recording projects (including 3 gold) and a handful of NARS Grammy Award nominations to his credit, Jessy had been hailed as "the King of Gospel." Known for his unforgetable live performances, his musical impact has been felt by crowdsacross the U.S. and around the world .He has appeared in concert halls around the globe; from New York's Carnegie Hall, Madison Square Garden and Apollo Theater to London's Royal Albert Hall; from Washington's JFK Center to the Kenyatta International Conference Center in Kenya, Africa and hundreds of other major venues across Europe, Scandinavia and the Caribbean.
A native of San Antonio, Texas, Jessy developed a love for music and started music lessons at age 5. In high school and at St. Mary's College, he earned acclaim as a pianist and singer. He relocated to Chicago where he became the pianist, composer and vocalist with the faned Thompson Community Singers ("The Tommies") .He later formed the Jessy Dixon Singers.
Shortly after his spiritual conversion, Jessy performed at the Newport Jazz & Blues Festival at New York's Radio Music Hall. That performance earned four encores and the invitation to join Paul Simon on his first around-the -world solo tour. He sang gospel with Paul Simon for the next eight years across the U.S., Japan, England, France, Holland, Scandinavia and Israel. He received two gold records" for his work on Paul Simon's Live Rhymin' Simon and Still Crazy hit recordings. Since leavingSimon, he has continued to tour the world relentlessly, appear on major television programs and produce many important recordings including the 1997 "hit" I Am Redeemed.
Jessy Dixon is a pioneer in blending Black Gospel and Contemporary Christian Music styles. He has been desribed as "a singer with a voice that can bring the sweetest caress to a delicate melody and holler with all the store-front church passion of his Black Gospel heritage." His songs have ben recorded by many major secular and Christian artists. He was proclaimed "intrnational Gospel singer" in recognition of his hundreds of appearances - more than any other artist in history - in Scandinavia, West Africa, India, Holland and Switzerland. Jessy became an ordained minister in 1982. Dubbed "the singing evangelist" believes that every concert is a missionary opportunity. He says, "I just keep pointing to Jesus and I'm not making any apolgies for singing about Him." BAND_MEMBERS: Original recording produced by Bill Maxwell & Andre Crouch

Product Description
It was an incredible experience for everyone involved! The date was August 8, 1961.The place was Calvary Chapel, Costa Mesa, CA - the extraordinary Southern California church pastored by renowned teacher, author, evangelist, broadcaster and pastor Chuck Smith - the epicenter of that early '70's spiritual revolution which came to be known as "The Jesus Movement."
The occasion: Gospel singer Jessy Dixon had come - with a truly stellar band of musicians and a group of America's most amazing Gospel singers - to share and evening of musical praise - Jessy Dixon-style - with the crowd of five thousand ( mostly young people.) And... it was captured...captured LIVE on tape. Captured so that a remarkably experience of worship and praise could be shared around the world for years to come. The whole experience - beginning to end .
Part of that evening was released on a recording in 1992 but, due to the restraints of the old vinyl phonograph record, much of this inspired night of praise - we think some of the most exciting, most important parts - have been hidden away in the tape vault...until now.
It was a very special night. A night of high praise, worship and joyous rejoicing. It was an evening of celebration not soon to be forgottenby anyone fortunate enough to have been there.
Now, for the first time, it's offered here pretty much like it happened..beginning to end. Come join the musicians, and singers and five thousand very excited guests for Jessy Dixon / LIVE in the Spirit.

Customer Reviews:
An uplifting experience.......2006-12-05
If one takes into account the time at which this recording was made, and the surrounding events affecting his life, one can truly appreciate the significance of this album. Experiencing oppression not only from the U.S. but later the Canadian government to travel abroad, Robeson was impeded, but not prevented from singing in the name of peace, human rights, and the rights of the common worker. Victory was at hand when on May, 9 1958, the date of this recording, Paul Robeson announced that his passport battle had been won. This is the recording of a triumphant gentleman, a loving, ecstatic audience, and very importantly, a talented and very attuned pianist (Alan Booth). With this in mind one can more greatly appreciate how special this concert was. The magic of this recording trancends Robeson's impeccable singing. It is the concert as a whole that makes it so spectacular. Listen to 'Joe Hill', think of Robeson's battle, and hear why it is so powerful. Or listen to 'O No John', Alan Booth pounding the keys on the last notes, and the audience's response. Every person in Carnegie Hall was riveted. Well worth the price, and an uplifting experience.
One of the best, and latest, of the Robeson recordings..........2006-10-17
This concert came along in 1958, when Paul's passport was restored and he was allowed to travel and make a living again, after several years of being on the Communist blacklist. His joy at performing once more for his traditional audience comes through in every track. That same year, he did a concert at his brother's church in Harlem, and when Columbia Records issued that one, it had another winner. Not long after those shows, Paul went overseas for five years, suffering a health crisis that brought him back to America in 1963, broken down and unable to perform consistently. He spent his last decade or so of life on the sidelines, living quietly with his sister in Philadelphia. This concert, then, along with the one at Mother Zion Church, is one of the final triumphs of one of the most interesting American lives. We know now that Paul's stubborn support of the Soviet Union in the Stalin era was a tragic flaw in his character, but he had magnificent gifts of voice and of acting presence, and had he come to the attention of audiences in 1957 instead of 1927, he would likely have earned millions as a singer and actor, and his political and social radical activism would have been a much smaller impediment to his career. If you already own some Robeson recordings, add this one because it represents him at the beginning of what was then "old age." If you own none, this concluding album is actually a fine starting point, because his earlier work suffers a bit from the primitive recording technology of the '30's and '40's.
Paul Robeson Live.......2006-07-11
Of course his baritone is fabulous. His rendition of Joe Hill is unforgettable - this was a song he sang for the builders' labourers on the site of the Sydney Opera House in around 1969 -also Old Man River, which he made his own. He should have sung this in the film of the musical Showboat but he was passed over for an inferior voice by the producers because he was a member of the Communist Party. A pity. He also sings some gospel on this CD, I'm not mad about religious songs but if you like them then you'll love this.
New version available in UK.......2006-02-18
This version is now redundant as Vanguard has released a version in 2005 with the original album cover for the first time and with new sleeve notes. The sound is also better. I purchased it from amazon.co.uk.
Question.......2005-09-29
I would like to buy Paul Robeson CD with "Old Man River" and "Kevin Barry (Irish)"

It's said politics makes strange bedfellows. But it's got nothing on the peculiar marriage of art and history inspired by the tragic events of 9/11/01. Before that day, Daniel Rodriguez was a member of New York's finest, working as an NYPD security officer at the Manhattan South precinct. If it seemed an odd calling for a gifted, operatically trained tenor, it was employment many a journeyman artist could relate to: the proverbial "day job." As it turns out, no police academy in the world could have trained Rodriguez for the crucial role his city's darkest hour thrust upon him. While his colleagues mourned their staggering losses and toiled around the clock in rescue efforts, Rodriguez delivered renditions of "God Bless America" that rallied both his city and his country, much as Kate Smith's version of the Irving Berlin patriotic standard had done at the dawn of WWII.
Contemporary jazz great-producer Tom Scott took it from there, showcasing Rodriguez's powerful voice in this deftly arranged album focused sharply on personal and national inspiration. Taking his cue from his own hero, Mario Lanza, Rodriguez instills no small amount of drama in his performances, and it serves him well on tracks like the American folk classic "Shenandoah," a rousing take on Scarlet Pimpernel's "Into the Fire," and the relative Sinatra rarity "The House I Live In." The "God Bless America" here varies from the original single release, with Rodriguez reading the spoken intro once delivered by Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. Is Rodriguez the greatest tenor of modern times? No. But it's hard to imagine a talent better suited to the challenge history has thrust upon him; we're lucky--make that blessed--to have him. --Jerry McCulley

Beautiful.......2007-07-21
This cd will bring tears to your eyes. His voice is so clear and lovely. I bought this cd for my mother for her birthday in September. It is so sad that the events of September 11 had to occur for this man to be discovered.
God Bless Daniel Rodriquez.......2007-07-16
This alblum is a treasure to own and listen to. He really captures the spirit of patriotism. I have played his songs at a local fireworks show that I DJ at and his songs are up there with the other songs by artists by Mr. Lee "God Bless The U.S.A." Greenwood and other great artists. New York City and the nation needed him at a time when we were trying to recover from the worst tragedy in the history of the U.S.A. and he was there for us.
Music From and For the Heart.......2006-11-25
Daniel's album is music to be shared with family and with friends to help further ensure warmth, strong family ties, and love of our beautiful country. His voice is magical, skilled, rich and so memorable that it can take one on a journey from yesterday to promise for a bright tomorrow. This is a superb rendering of past unforgettable music. His solemn rendition of the peace song "God Bless America" is the album's centerpiece and truly unforgettable....
Daniel Rodriguez.......2006-11-11
I first heard of Daniel Rodriguez a couple of months ago when he sang on Jay Leno's show. He was/is WONDERFUL! His voice is beautiful, but he sings from the heart, and that makes him exceptional.
Some definite winners on this album.......2005-12-14
My favorites are "Ave Maria" and "The Lord's Prayer" where Daniel truly shows off his vocal talents. I could have done without the choir backup on "Ave Maria" but nonetheless a great rendition.
The ending that he has for the "The Lord's Prayer" almost brings a tear to my eye each time I hear it. Well done Daniel.

This is an excellent CD. The music, both voices and orchestra, is superb. The content of the lyrics is inspiring. It reminds me of so many reasons I'm proud to be American.
All new recordings, with a strong patriotric theme.......2003-07-16
Surprised that no one has reviewed this yet. Amazon.com doesn't give much info on this release, so I thought I'd rectify that. This is the second brand-new release on the "Mormon Tabernacle Choir" label, following their April 2003 release of "Consider the Lilies." Again, several of the arrangements are by Mack Wilberg, with direction by Craig Jessop and accompianment by the Orchestra at Temple Square. The track list is as follows:

The sound on this release is, if anything, even cleaner than the previous release, with the Choir and orchestra very evenly balanced. The programming includes a mix of both traditional and brand new songs, a couple of which (Stephen Paulus's "Hymn For America," and Charles Osgood's "The Pledge of Allegiance") were commissioned especially for this recording. Additional note: several of these songs were included on the Choir's 2003 Northeastern States tour, which was a huge success. I highly recommend this recording!

No Greater Voice in this Century!.......2003-12-10
In the late 1970's when Jessye Norman first appeared as the Diva of Sopranos, Robert Shaw, himself called her the "greatest Voice of the 20th Century!" Since we are now into the 21st Century, it is time we come to know her better thru her natural genre from the Southern Style of Black Spirituals. After playing her early CD for several years on the way to and fro to GA Diagnostic Prison, I still get overwhelmed by her awesome sounds singing, "And I Could'nt Hear Nobody Pray" ; "There's A Man Going Round, Taking Names" ; "There Is A Balm In Gilead" ; "Walk With Me , Children" ; "Hush, Somebody's Calling My Name" and of course... "Were You There..." If you wish to find an Ideal Christmas Gift or Birthday Gift for a Southern Girl... This is IT!
She seems to get better and better in every Christmas Video from First Baptist Church of Augusta, GA.

Sacred songs & Spirituals.......2007-08-05
One of the best CD's I have in my collection. Jessye Norman voice is made for this type of music. When I play these CD's I get chills up and down my spine. The recording of these two CD are very good. I would highly recommend this to anybody who likes Sacred songs and Spirituals.

Excellent! Finally music I can learn to drum with!.......2006-11-27
I've been looking everywhere for some good drumming music to drum along to. This really works for me. Lots of different beats to learn and done repetitively enough that I can remember them, without being redundant and boring. Good stuff.

Dennis O'Neill is a wonderfully sensitive, intelligent singer--a tenor who varies his tone and delivery for each character. He also sings the music as written, with every dynamic shading in place. Yes, he manages high B-flats pianissimo without resorting to falsetto, and he also rises somewhat heroically to heavier moments. But there's a rub. The loud, high notes are a bit nasty--a slight wobble comes into the voice and a sense of strain is more than noticeable. His exquisite, piano beginning of "O paradiso" ("Oh land of dreams") from L'Africaine is only a sad memory when you hear the vaguely bawled high notes throughout. His "Reve" from Manon is lovely in its sustained peacefulness, and while he's very exciting in the big Act II duet from Ballo (with soprano Susan Bullock as a fine Amelia), there are always those unfortunate "big" notes to reckon with. Perhaps that's why the gorgeous Pearl Fishers duet, with baritone Anthony Michaels-Moore, ends the program so successfully. The soft notes are more prominent than the troublesome forte ones. Perhaps this is being too picky--O'Neill is a worthy singer, he makes these arias and scenes palatable in translation (even Alvaro's music from Forza is believable), and artistry like this is a pleasure to come across. --Robert Levine
