British actress Minnie Driver's debut album is a more than credible affair--and a far cry from the usual travesty that unfolds with thespians who pine to be rock stars--outdistancing efforts by brethren like Don Johnson, Russell Crowe, and more recently Juliette Lewis. But then Driver was well on her way to becoming a recording artist as a member of the Puffs, Rock and Brown, but was sidetracked when she scored the starring role in 1995's Circle of Friends. If this CD is any indication, she should have rethought her priorities. Driver's voice is a wistful and stylish hybrid of a rather morose and breathy Kathleen Edwards and a more austere Sheryl Crow, raiding her own rather colorful autobiography for material, giving fans a chance to pick apart her rather melancholy lyrics to decipher which one of her famous beaus--like Matt Damon, Harrison Ford, Josh Brolin, or John Cusack--inspired them. Driver convinced members of the Wallflowers and Pete Yorn (whose brother is her agent) to play join her in the studio, giving her music a deft authentic gloss that might not have surfaced had she just used nameless studio pros. As a result Driver's music is languid and sensual dream pop, verging on alt country, but never making it over that rickety wooden fence. --Jaan Uhelszki

Album Description

The delete bins of history are littered with the recording attempts of actors who fancy themselves as singers. In the case of Minnie Driver, music actually came first. She began singing in London's jazz clubs as a teenager, eventually joining a band that landed a deal with Island Records. She was in the midst of negotiating a solo deal with EMI when the hit film Circle of Friends came along and changed her life. But she always longed to return to music, and with the release of Everything I've Got in My Pocket, Driver has made the album she's been dreaming of making since her teenage years. Backed by a group that includes members of the Wallflowers and Pete Yorn's band, the album deftly blends Driver's sultry, bittersweet vocals with sparse, atmospheric pop and a hint of contemporary folk. With ten original songs and an unforgettable cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Hungry Heart," Driver's debut marks the arrival of an accomplished singer-songwriter.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very mellow soothing sexy CD.......2007-06-01

Minnie Driver, what can you say...

Very good actress, believable in romance, funny in comedy, spellbinding in her current project " The Riches", is here a self examining songwriter, and once again a very good one. As a bonus (or due to not enough original tracks to fill out a CD) there is a heart wrenching version of Sprinsteen's "Hungry Heart" that is also quite memorable.
Her voice is a sexy, soft, raspy and breathy, no power balads here, and no iratating vocal runs. It gives it a refreshingly honest feel, like it is meant for just you.

If you are looking for something fairly fresh and mellow, (performed by a grown up beautiful woman) you will not be dissapointed with this buy!

4 out of 5 stars Everything I've got in my pocket.......2007-05-16

A pretty good CD. I really enjoy the title song as well as a few others, but I was not impressed with some songs including the bruce springsteen remake. I would recommend it for the listener trying to find a voice that is enchanting and different than what is currently available in music today

4 out of 5 stars Praise to Ms. Driver.......2006-09-07

Wow! I did not expect much from this album but that just goes to show you should not judge a CD by its cover (or in in this case by its actress/songstress). Minnie Driver has a hauntingly beautiful voice that is reminiscent of Sarah McLachan. I love every song on this album including Ms. Driver's remake of "Hungry Heart." The song that drew me in however is number 6's "Deeper Water." I was sunk with the first note. *smile*

I truly hope Ms. Driver will follow this album with another. It will be a great loss to us if she does not.

4 out of 5 stars if you like tori amos you will like minnie.......2006-03-22

this is the second time I bought this album. I lost the original in a house fire and I like it so much I had to replace it.

4 out of 5 stars impressive.......2006-03-02

I got this CD not expecting much based on the fact it is usually a taboo thing to try to cross over from acting to singing....Boy was I ever wrong, she is amazing, listening to her beautiful voice just calms the soul.If you like Dido or Enya, you will definetly like Minnie.Definetly a must to add to your collection. There is not one song that sticks out,you have to listen to the whole album to appreciate the beauty of it.

Ah, the favorites! They go on and on! Lighthouse is mine.

5 out of 5 stars One of my Favorite JT Albums.......2007-01-13

Songs from this album have remained in my head since the day I borrowed my roommate's vinyl album 20some yrs ago. It is one of my favorite James Taylor albums. "Sarah Maria" is an incredibly beautiful song and, stupidly, I have always liked the goofy "Gorilla".

4 out of 5 stars Taylor's Second Best.......2007-01-02

James Taylor's Seventh Album & last recording for Warner Brothers is definitely his biggest self-written album in four years and after his perfect release in 1972 called "One man dog".
This album surely ranks among the best Albums Taylor ever released, however "One man dog" remains my favorite album for this great artist.

5 out of 5 stars I bought this album because of the great reviews here.......2006-01-21

This is my favorite James Taylor album.... whether it's his best.... I don't know..... what I can say is that I agree with a review here that says that Junkie's Lament gives me the chills...... this is one heck of a beautiful song...... listen to the harmonizations once Carly Simon comes in along with Garfunkel and JT..... the three part harmonizations are so beautiful...... when she comes in on the la la la la las before the song switches to it's final lament, it's stunning.... it's a wonderful sound.......... it's a great album and it's my favorite James Taylor album..... I think it's my favorite because it's his jazziest!!!!

3 out of 5 stars A standard James Taylor album.......2005-08-21

James Taylor has always been an amazing singer songwriter, however, In the pocket is nowhere near the masterpiece that everyone is raving about. It is indeed just a standard good album with many legitimate album cuts. There are no hits after shower the people but every song is consistent. Don't buy this expecting another sweet baby james, hbuy it knowing that it is just nice! A good buy if you like JT.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT.......2007-01-25

Dennis Brown is an artist who has many many albums out since his career was launched perhaps over 100 albums. This compilation features his early recordings, many cover versions, but this is an extensive collection that features his voice at an early raw stage but very infectiousyou may find yourself listening to this collection over and over.A must buy if you are into reggae, don't forget that DENNIS BROWN is BOB MARLEY'S favorite singer hence his tag "THE CROWN PRINCE OF REGGAE"

5 out of 5 stars The crown prince of reggae.......2006-04-27

After the passing of the prophet Bob Marley Dennis Brown took over as the king of reggae. This anthology is as hard hitting as Bobs legend my favorite money in my pocket, the remake of Otis Reddings dock of the bay and silhouettes just to name a few.Buy this record it will never come out of the cd changer rewind!

5 out of 5 stars Sooooooooo Good!.......2004-01-09

If you like roots reggae at all, you should own at least one Dennis Brown album. If you're going to own only one Dennis Brown album, why not own this one? This album has most of his great hits, spanning most of his career. The sound quality is great, there's a nice 8 page booklet, 2 discs, 48 tracks... After listening to this anthology, I now realize my reggae collection had been incomplete without it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Anthology.......2002-08-15

A truly great collection! Perfect for the new, old, all listeners of the Crowned Prince of Reggae Music - D. Brown!

Album Description

As most rock & roll bands started in someone's garage or basement or living room, Phase Selector Sound are two (ex?) punk rockers working out of their ad hoc home studios (heavily influenced by Radio Shack equipment). They create a powerful roots dub that is hypnotic, mesmerizing and trance-inducing. Very much in keeping with ROIR's long history of releasing the absolute best in dub by such artists as Lee Perry, Niney The Observer, Mikey Dread, Mad Professor, Black Uhuru, Badawi, Bill Laswell, Dub Syndicate, Ras Michael, Scientist, Yabby You, Oku Onuora --- and the list goes on! Produced arranged and mixed by Phase Selector Sound.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars The Sound Bites Just as Good.......2007-03-10

Pleasant background cocktail party music with reggae/dub beats, I purchased it liking the sound bites, but there is nothing more to the album than the soundbites. Never does it get dense or goes anyplace surprising. Cover is better than music. Groups like St. Germain, or the various Parisian club mix albums, like Paris Under a Groove or Hotel Costas series are far better, and I wouldn't really recommend those either, unless you want "chill" coctail party music. Still I don't regret purchase becasue sometimes I just want a groove and to otherwise basically ignore kind of hip "muzak" while I do something else than listen, which is what I would consider this good for. I love that Summer in Paris, Hotel Costas, thing, but much prefer Orb to any of this to fill a similar need in my music. Actually, Orb can be brilliant at times. A couple maybe three Orb albums are superb. I took best tracks from three of them and made one great burned CD. Truth is for "chill" purpose, not that that expression conveys very much to me,I've never heard anything in 30 years that comes close to Discrete Music by Eno or Evening Star by Fripp and Eno. Compared to greats like those ... Well for a "chill" relaxing, after work space, they've never been touched to my knowledge. Sorry if lumping them in with this offends anybody. "Chill" never really made all that much sense to me as a label for music anyway. Sorry if this isnt' what you're looking for.

5 out of 5 stars Hats off to dub-masters Joshua Elrod and Craig Allen!.......2005-09-29

I can only agree with previous reviewers, this is the best dub album I've ever heard, all categories... The coolest thing is that it bridges roots dub with modern dub like no other. The great Hi-fidelity dub series, for example, does on occasions reach the level of Phase Selector Sound. At the same time this album would easily match any dub release blood&fire could possibly throw at you! These guys takes dub to the next level. The production has a fantastic old-school feel to it, with a setup that is simple yet profound. This is truly beautiful music and the album doesn't contain one single tedious moment, every track stands out against the others. Phase Selector Sound kicks off at the highest possible level and stay there throughout the entire album. There's no end to the superlatives this album merits.

5 out of 5 stars Worthy companion of the Hi-Fidelity Dub Sessions.......2005-07-20

This is, without a doubt, the best original dub offering I've purchased - online or off - bar none.

In the tradition of the kings of dub (like Augustus Pablo, Mad Scientist, Lee Perry, or the Professor), this album retains very strong ties to its roots (you'll hear snatches of old Upsetter tracks, along with some other nods to those old school influential artists).

At the same time, the album has a very modern feel to it, along the lines of the excellent Hi-Fidelity Dub releases (1-4). There's no question that this album is strictly roots, but the tracks all feel like they have had updating for the downbeat era.

The most shocking thing to me is that this album was released 6 years ago, and I've only discovered it in 2005! Do yourself a favour and purchase it straight away...before it goes out of print (come on...how many other products can you find that have ALL customer reviews giving it 5 out of 5 stars? ;).

5 out of 5 stars The Best Dub Yet........2003-04-01

I've heard a lot of dub, and I own a lot of dub, but I've got to say that this is the best dub yet, I mean the entire CD. Personally this CD is #1 in my book so far. It's worth buying at almost any price. So if you like dub this is the one for you. I can't wait to see what he put out next.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Just what you need ............2007-03-03

I'm just learning to play blues and this is exactly what I needed to build my skills and confidence. Great music and also addresses dynamics, something most backing tracks don't do. Worth every penny!

4 out of 5 stars Decent.......2007-01-11

I agree with the other reviewers and give this four stars. There is a good amount of blues styles in different keys and the songs are all around five minutes long (although there are only eight tracks). This CD is great for those who like to strap on the guitar and start wailing out solos like I do. And, unlike a real band, the CD never complains about unending solos. The tracks are also good for practicing your scales and patterns. I recommend it and will probably be checking out the others in the series.

4 out of 5 stars Nothin' Fancy Here..........2005-02-02

...but great, solid blues rythym tracks in a variety of keys. Outstanding practice and learning tool. Tracks are long enough to give you room to work on your licks without constantly hitting Replay. No instruction here. Learn the licks elsewhere and then use this CD to practice and perfect 'em.

4 out of 5 stars Right Good Fun!.......2004-10-11

BITP #1 is a fun CD. This CD along with just a bit of ability to do the pentatonic thing will have you walking the Blues in no time. There is a sufficient range of Blues styles to keeping you interested and motivated. You can often Jam hard or soft with the same track, this makes for a great learning experience.

You may want to go to the BITP website to get an idea of the possibilities by listening to user submissions. While you are there, take a peek at Marvin's "Love Is Alive" CD. This is not a strict Blues CD, sorta jazzy Blues ... soft guitar. It is a somewhat over-produced, but it "listens real good."

Anson Funderburgh is an excellent diplomat for contemporary blues, and for the blues in general. He's accessible enough to hook the new listener, creative enough to be interesting, and entertaining enough to keep people listening. Change in My Pocket consists of 12 tight, well-written tracks, from the opening title song to the precise, high-energy closer "Things Have Changed." Of the material in between, slower songs like "Little Girl" and the sensual "Highway Man" are the high points of the album, though the other songs are strong as well, with some excellent harmonica work from Sam Myers. Although Funderburgh won't necessarily win any points for originality with this album, there are worse things you could have in your stereo at your party on Saturday night. --Genevieve Williams

Anson came to Australia 'unknown' and was a HIT! This CD is extremely good blues, can be played over and over without problem. Great ! A1+

5 out of 5 stars Chicago blues meets Texas blues........2006-05-10

Blues comes in a lot of flavors. There is Chicago made famous by people like Buddy Guy and Howlin Wolf. There is Texas Blues that been played by the Vaughan and the Winters brother. There is also Mississippi Delta Blues, English Blues, the list goes on. Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets with Sam Myers, brings the best of these different sytles together. Mr Myers's raw voice, Anson guitars licks and the Rockets backing them up really works here. If you want a place to start or to own only a single album by this band, this is the album to go for, because in my book this is their best album.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2003-06-14

This is one of the best blues albums ever made. Along with Jimmie Vaughan's recent "Do You Get the Blues?". I'm not exaggerating. If you like real blues as opposed to "Blues Hammer" type of bands, this is it.

4 out of 5 stars Change in my Pocket.......2001-07-25

This wood be a great CD to teach a class on blues and roots music! A perfect example of a band playing TOGETHER. So tight and smooth, great rythm section, tastefully understated guitar solos, and Sams' vocal warmth combined with great production make this one of my favorite blues CDs. What a great Bo Diddly feel on "Willie Jo". A modern classic.

4 out of 5 stars A Place Called Cool.......2000-06-13

Somewhere between Mississippi and Texas is a place called Cool. Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets with Sam Myers are among the few remaining residents of this hip little community. "Change In My Pocket," the bands latest effort on Bullseye, provides music fans with quality music that is all too lacking in today's overproducted, rock-influenced blues. The Muddy Waters flavored "Highway Man" is Anson and Sammy at their best but note the tasty piano fills ala Otis Spann offered up by John Street. This band has it all. "You can't be the one for me" is classic Anson and the Rockets with brilliantly simple drumming by Danny Cochran. If you are a fan of the blues this cd has to be part of your collection.

5 out of 5 stars This is it!.......2007-04-15

Absolutely one of the most incredible CD's I have bought in the past ten years, and I buy about 100 a year. Is it really impossible to wear out a CD? I'm not sure, but "Scissors" has found a home in my CD player!

5 out of 5 stars Noteworthy Emerging Artist.......2006-07-05

As a strict principle I do not write reviews. However, this album has lead me to make an exception. This album is perfectly written, performed, produced, and ordered in terms of track flow. There are no "filler" tracks on this album, each track stands well either on it's own, or as a part of the whole album. Polly's voice wafts throughout the album in much the same fashion as Norah Jones, or Patty Griffen. However, "Scissors in My Pocket" does not sound the same as a majority of the other albums associated with the "Singer/Songwriter" genre. This album is completely unique with the lyrical content and delivery of said verses. A few standout tracks include "Carry Me Home" "I Was Made To Love You" and "She Moves In Secret Ways". However, as I previously stated, there are no "filler" tracks on this album. In conclusion, I wholeheartedly recommend this album to any person looking for a fresh sound. This album will not disappoint, (and if it does, you can give your copy to me) ;)

5 out of 5 stars Good Sound!.......2005-10-27

This is classy stuff, and it is Polly's own style. Shades of Mindy Smith, Norah Jones and the late Janis Joplin, and throw a little Carol King in there. She has the lyrical and melodic feel of a young Elton John, fresh, sometimes bluesy and intellectually honest.

5 out of 5 stars She Moves In Secret Ways.......2005-02-27

This is without doubt one of the best debut albums I have ever heard. Apparently Paula Paulusma is British. I live in London and yet have seen no coverage of her on television or in the newspapers; nobody I know has heard of her. i cant quite understand how this has come about, as the album was released a few months ago. But mark my words, this album will explode in the same way that Damien Rice's "O" ran and ran. It is only a matter of time. Get in quick, buy 5 copies right now, one for yourself and one for each of your four closest friends. This CD begs to be heard - the lyrics are strong and vividly original, the melodies are catchy enough to stay with you for hours after hearing them. And best of all, seis nothing like I have heard before. Polly Paulusma really is something special, every track is a gem.

5 out of 5 stars Undiscovered?.......2004-11-23

I don't "review", but I felt compelled to say something about this so far, unheralded, arrival. "Scissors in My Pocket," in my opinion, is the the most engaging album of original material since Patty Griffin appeared on the singer/songwriter scene. But Polly Paulusma, who I understand, hails from the UK, is completely her own woman. This, unlike so many other singer/songwriter debuts boasts its own special identity. The music and lyrics are are fresh and arresting, delivered with a distinctive rhythm and diction. Ms. Paulusma's delicate, but insistent voice is the perfect vehicle for her quietly arresting material. Given the smoothly understated style, you might first look to the success of Norah Jones as the ignition for Ms. Paulusma's discovery, but the light she sheds is truly her own. Try as I might, I couldn't find "filler" on this album. Will she join the ranks of Joni Mitchell and Laura Nyro one day? Who knows, but "Scissors" is a delight all the way through, with outstanding high points.

5 out of 5 stars Lionel Richie's Commodores demise.......2007-01-11

Eight great tracks on this album, but unfortunately Lionel Richie decided to call it quits with the Commodores after touring with the other members to promote it. The only Top 10 smash single from this album is LADY(YOU BRING ME UP). The words in parentheses were added to avoid confusion with another composition(minus those words) by Richie and recorded by Kenny Rogers. Around 1974 or '75,the Commodores first formed and were quite successful. The band remained intact without Richie for about two or three more years. Richie first three solo albums, respectively released in 1982,'83 and '86 were huge best-sellers. Before quitting the band,Richie wrote his first non-Commodores hit ENDLESS LOVE and recorded it with ex-Supreme Diana Ross for the 1981 film of the same title starring Brooke Shields. The song was covered later by Mariah Carey with the late Luther Vandross. OH NO was a Top 20 hit but was never positioned higher than #16 on the pop/rock/R&B charts. The other songs are great.

4 out of 5 stars More hits than misses.......2004-08-18

IN THE POCKET was Lionel Richie's last album with the Commodores. By the time he exited the band in late 1982, they had gone from being hard-core R&B funksters to masters of the pop power ballad, due to the overwhelming influence of Richie. This album is miles away from previous offerings like CAUGHT IN THE ACT, MOVIN' ON, HOT ON THE TRACKS and the group's self-titled LP that contained smoldering funk and deep, infectious grooves, so don't expect to find much of that here. However, this album does has some highlights worth hearing.

The writing may have been on the wall, as far as Richie's future with his Alabama homies when this album was recorded. Usually his voice dominated the leads on earlier Commodores' LPs, but this time around, the lead vocals are evenly distributed between him and drummer Walter "Clyde" Orange...almost as if he were deliberately being low-key. Also, the only songs Richie leads on are "Lady (You Bring Me Up)" and the ones he wrote, whereas the other Commodores who contributed material to this album seemed to be writing for Clyde at this point. A lot of the songs sound like they could have easily fit onto other R&B acts' albums, like the 1980s version of Kool and the Gang, the Brothers Johnson, Michael Jackson, ConFunkShun and Rufus and Chaka Khan, with thumping bass lines and similar vocal arrangements.

This CD opens with "Lady (You Bring Me Up)"...the Pop Top 20/R&B Top 10 hit single from 1981, an enjoyable and upbeat William King composition that sounds like a Kool and the Gang tune. Next is the R&B hit "Saturday Night" - a nice, mellow and rare ballad turn for Clyde, who usually had the lockdown on singing lead on the band's funkiest numbers. On this song, he more than rises to the occasion with some passionate vocals. Next is another Clyde-led tune, "Keep On Taking Me Higher" - a party thumper reminiscent of Michael Jackson's "Get On The Floor" from OFF THE WALL - decent. "Oh No", a Richie tune that was the other hit from this album, oozes country/western and it would not have been out of place on his debut solo album. The song isn't bad, in fact it's one of Richie's better ballads - but there's not much R&B to find in it.

"Why You Wanna Try Me", a pop/R&B Brothers Johnson-like dance tune is a great performance by Richie. It was released as a single but was only a minor hit...don't see why, the song is pretty good. Love the ending: "Stop right there - hold on - why you wanna try me?" The next two songs feature Clyde on lead and were both penned by him: "This Love" is an okay R&B ballad, and the cool, playful funk of "Been Loving You" is one of the best tunes on the CD. It seemed to be a reminder that even as far pop as they had gone, they could still funk out and lay it down when the opportunity arose. The CD closes out with "Lucy", a Richie pop ballad that has blatant country overtones. Not really one of my favs, but like "Oh No", it sounds very much like the early ballad material Richie would record as a soloist. The fact that I didn't particularly care for this tune did not keep me from purchasing this album a second time, just to own it on CD.

Overall, IN THE POCKET has more strengths than weaknesses. If you're comparing it to any Commodores LP recorded before 1978, well, of course it will come up short. But if you really enjoy this band's music, then it's a sure bet that you'll want to jump on this. (Rating: 3 1/2 stars)

3 out of 5 stars Stars For The Commadores,Good Luck To Lionel!.......2004-07-25

Lionel Riche was about to leave the Commodores when this
album came out in 1981.The only really memorable cuts are
the classic hit "Lady (You Bring Me Up)","Why You Wanna Try Me"
and "Keep On Taking Me Higher",all exuberant uptempo funky pop
in the fine Commodores tradition.Though actually it's two best
songs are the ultra-grooving "Been Loving You" and the smoldering "Saturday Night" in whitch this BAND-not it's vapid
lead singer, take center stage on the last two classic Commodores
jams as in the days of yore. But by the time you get to Riche's musical sweet n' low on "Oh,No" it becomes a reminder of what
happened to this group after he took more control-they became
just another black love song group without the tangy funk
flavors that made their early material so enjoyable. So this has
a whole package and would be more stars then this had "Oh,No"
been omitted but that tune ruins it.So can you take 'In The
Pocket' despite one lame song? You should try because the rest
is basically 4-5 star stuff!Just ignore the drivel.

4 out of 5 stars Pocket Change.......2001-10-30

1981's In The Pocket was the last album that Lionel Richie recorded with The Commodores. It was a nice send off as the band assembled a strong eight song set that includes one of their all-time best songs, the beautiful "Oh No". Other strong tracks include the bouncy "Lady (You Bring Me Up)", "Lucy" and the moving "Saturday Night".

Good tracks for jamming and they run long enough for an extended solo when you are really gettin' with it. I have three of these Band In The Pocket CD's and am well pleased with all of them. Playing with a click track has it's uses but this is much more enjoyable.
