Two 5-star albums, re-released as one.......2007-01-11
The scene: Oakland, 1970. Eighth grade, woodshop. Our substitute teacher confessed at the beginning of class that he knew nothing about wood or tools. Did we know what we were doing enough to continue on with our projects? Okay, then. He'd brought his record player, he'd be DJ. Toward the end of class he wound up playing a few tracks from Cold Shot, and those of us who'd been paying attention enthused: this was real feeling! Well, teacher said, stay after when the bell rings. There's a track I can't play for the class. I still remember Fabius Jones' grin to me in that moment.
The bell rang, we stayed. Needle dropped on vinyl. "The Signifyin Monkey told the Lion one day, there's a bad motherf***er comin down yo' way..." Goodness! I went out that weekend and bought the album.
Shuggie Otis, Johnny's son, got a lot of press for being precocious on this album; he played all the guitars and bass tracks, plus harmonica (Johnny played drums, piano and vibes; this was a two-man band, courtesy of overdubs, plus Delmar Evans on vox). And he does do an amazing job for a kid; but you can't listen to him as a kid. What he does is a very good job for ANYONE, regardless of age. Cold Shot, all these years later, is one of my top 4 blues albums (B.B.King 'Completely Well', Muddy Waters 'Hard Again', John Lee Hooker 'Serve You Right To Suffer' are the others). The songs are great, the arrangements are straightforward and clean, and the performances excellent throughout.
What you don't tend to hear about is the singer. Nicknamed "Mighty Mouth", Delmar Evans gives us real gifts throughout this disc. He has a strong, reedy falsetto and a low growl, and he bounces from one to the other, and in between, with great facility. Listen to the clip of "Sittin Here All Alone". It's a voice that truly deserves to be better known than it is, and this disc is a great way to get familiar with it. Listen to him cracking himself up in "That's Life", unable to continue on about the guy from Podunk who woke up in a bunk full of funk, he laughs, "Aw, f*** it, y'all play me sump'm, sh**!!" I still can't hear that without smiling wide.
Okay, now I've referenced profanity twice, let's get to the difference between the two albums contained here. "Cold Shot" was a legitimate release by the Johnny Otis Show, comprised of the musicians mentioned. It opened with "Signifying Monkey", a musical treatment of a traditional 'toast' (an african-american oral tradition, see Roger Abrahams [...])
From there it continues with straight up high-quality 1969 L.A. Blues. This album could be found in record stores.
"For Adults Only", on the other hand, was an entirely anonymous production. My guess is, that's because the cover art alone, let alone the songs, could have landed anyone involved with the project in jail on obscenity charges. Though the band is clearly the same, and F.A.O. even opened with the same track as Cold Shot, no real person's real name appeared anywhere on the original album. This album could be found in Adult Bookstores.
After Signifyin Monkey, "Snatch" continued with other examples of classic toasts Poolshootin Monkey, (here as "Signifyin Monkey part 2"), Shine and the Titanic (here, to a Bo Diddley beat and the melody of Otis' own "Willie and the Hand Jive, as "Hey, Shine") and Stack a Lee; plus anything else, it seems, they could find or put together, that had a whole lot of swearing in it. Two-Time Slim, an I'm-the-baddest-motha-you-ever-seen rant, incorporating some parts of "Who Do You Love" (walk 99 miles of barb'wire, wear a cobra snake for a necktie, etc.) has parts that are hilarious, and other parts that are unfit to be played in company (I'm the type that'd crawl over 50 good ***** to get to one fat boy's...WHAT?? Sorry I can't quote that here, just buy the album).
The last three songs are the weakest. "Two Girls" was on the original, but is stupid and embarrassing and 4 1/4 minutes too long. "It's Good..." is a protest song, not bad but not a shining success either. "Dirty Dozens" (aka "Yass Yass Yass") is a classic, done well.
Note: the original version of "Sittin Here Alone" ended with the lines "Oh, I ain't gonna do it no more/Cause every time I do it, you see/It makes my little wee-wee sore". Nothing about the song up to that point was anything but serious and heartfelt; in fact I never noticed the total non-sequiteur until I'd owned the album for a number of months. Unfortunately, that ending has been cut from this remastered release. Too, bad, it was (like a whole lot of this music) unique and hilarious.
Note 2: The original albums were "Cold Shot": tracks 1-10 here, in order; "For Adults Only": track 1, then tracks 11-18 (track 1 was the opening track for both albums); tracks 19-20 were not on either original record.
Note 3: Looks like R. Crumb did the artwork, doesn't it? Nope. Johnny O. himself.
How can you possibly go wrong..........2006-02-16
...With a title like "Snatch and Poontangs?"
I picked up this dusty old Johnny Otis title after stumbling on and freaking out over the Johnny Otis compilation Watts Funky - highly recommended as well. Enthusiastic reviews and some curiosity took care of any possible indecision. And, true to form, there should be none. So long as you have a sense of humor and a little stomach.
And perfectly complimenting the liberal does of raunch here are the serious blues chops and groove hounding going on with this unnamed house band. You'll also notice that proto-blues guys like George Thorogood were definitely keenly aware of The Johnny Otis Show.
Not sure another album like this exists. 3 Words: Big John Jeeter.
One of a kind.......2005-04-23
I hadn't heard this in thirty years,im glad they finally re-released it! Outrageous music and lyrics.lots of extra songs too.
And it's about time!.......2003-09-09
Back around 1987, I was working as a guitar tech for The Replacements. Billy (the stage mgr) had a beat up cassette copy of the Snatch & The Poontangs album. It was a huge hit on the bus. I don't think a day went by w/out one of us popping it into the deck for a listen.
I dubbed a copy shortly before the tour ended, and brought it home w/me -- where it became an instant favorite with my friends. Somewhere along the line, I lost the tape. I searched high and low, but was never able to find another copy.
About a week ago, I was washing some dishes and "Two Time Slim" popped into my head. As soon as I finished, I did a web search and was pleased beyond words to see that it's been re-released on CD.
It's every bit as good as I remember it... =o)
Buy It To Hear Shuggie!.......2003-01-04
There are a lot of reasons to recommend this CD. First, it's a double CD featuring Johnny Otis' 1968 comeback release "Cold Shot" combined with Johnny Otis' 1969 "Snatch and the Poontangs". Second, it contains two previously unreleased tracks, "It's Good To Be Free" and "The Dirty Dozens". Third, the music is excellent and shows that there is a lighter and humorous side to the blues and last but not least, it features some funky rhythms and wicked lead licks by Johnny's then 13-year-old son Johnny Shuggie Otis Jr. Not much material is available from Shuggie who retired at the ripe age of 22 and it's a real shame. Today, Shuggie is in his early 40's and is starting to resurface, lets hope he comes back and lives up to his potential. X-rated? Well, maybe in 1968. However, if this were released today, it may warrant an R rating solely for some of the language used in the later half of the CD.

EXCELLENT DEBUT FROM CLUB69.......2006-07-27
I have gone through this particular cd 5 times now ..its getting harder and harder to find and Ebay is a great resource for finding it ! (be prepared for a bidding war) I was hooked the moment I bought the 'Sugar Pie guy' maxi cd-single.. along with the 'Let me be your underwear' maxi cd-single ..this cd is a welcome breath of fresh air with campy lyrics (Riding into battle..), attitude (Diva), heavy house beats, sexual fantasy (gay or str8) and most of all its FUN ! With an x-rated cover to boot you know youre going to have fun with this cd. Vocals on this cd are great and the turn on Grace Jones' 'Warm Leatherette' is EXCELLENT !! Youll be dancing on the 1st listen and keeping this cd in permanent rotation. Each song is unique in itself and balance out the cd nicely. Definitely a guilty pleasure ! Take a ride !!!
I Want One 2!! Going, Gone........2003-01-04
This is an awesome album and I wish I could replace the one I lost! I worked at an adult club and enjoyed dancing to it!
It sucks that it is no longer in stock.
"Diva" was my favorite.
This group also has a song called, "Drama" which also rocks!
Hold on to the ones you do find of this band, cuz once they are gone, they are GONE....
Great CD - Erotic without being obsene.......2002-10-22
Club 69 made a fantastic debut with "Adults Only." These songs are dance tracks that will turn your living room into a dnce floor. Some of the songs are really campy and should be taken for comedic value.
Highlights on this album: Sugar Pie Guy, Riding Into Battle With Her High Heels On.
Great dance CD.......2002-03-27
I bought this more for nostalgic reasons than the tracklisting. I remember when it first came out about 5 years ago and wanted to get it but never did. It's great work-out music!
HIgh quality house/club music.......2001-08-14
WHen it comes to electronic music it is extremely difficult to trust reviewers as unlike other popular styles like rock or heavy metal or even rap there is no specific norm to dictate the overall "sound/pattern" in the music. IT all has to do with layered synthesizer sounds that one person may like and the other literally hate and percussion lines from simple to intricate with a full range of -once again- like/dislike. I purchased this CD based on having listened to only one track some time in the past: "LEt me be your underwear". I know it sounds silly! I have repeatedly been made fun of by people that I tell'em the title. HOwever, these are the ones that have not listened to it or they would have a totally different opinion. THe track set clubs "on fire" when it appeared and if you don't remember it you definately will once it starts playing on your CD player. THis, incidentally is track no 2 on the CD. SO, I received it home, opened it and played the 1st track literally expecting nothing exciting with the exception of "let me be your underwear "that I originally purchased the CD for. My mistake! ALl tracks (maybe 1-2 of them are exceptions) are amazingly uplifting. THe style is a "George Michael's Freedom" kind of thing, very happy, beaty and very very house. ENjoy!

Say it ain't so Aaron, this is not the final album from you?.......2006-05-02
If this is in fact Aaron Hall's last CD, I'm very disappointed. Aaron has a true singing voice, and is really an underrated artist. He just never seemed to be very well marketed either. I happen to find out he had an album coming out when I did a random search on the internet, and then saw the information on amazon.com. Aaron's career should have been much better then it was.
His niche are his slow jams. This man can simply sing the slow jams and you will find yourself hitting repeat on songs like Sorry, Still Here, All I Think About you. If you are an Aaron fan then you must have this CD in your collection. It is worth the money. Lack of radio play may have also hurt his career as well, not to mention his personal issues. When it comes to the up-tempo tracks I always felt he needed better production, if he had a stand out up-tempo track that could have garnered him some radio play, I'm sure that would have helped him tremendously. I will admit when I saw some of the tracks had some hip hop artist I never heard of, I got very concerned. On his second album he had this one track I was really getting into(track 6) and then the rapper came on and ruined the whole song for me. Nothing worse, then a song being ruined by a horrible hip hop artist. I will say KanasCali had a decent flow and the songs are simply okay. I hope Aaron will reconsider and release one more album.

Aaron , don't leave the game!!!.......2006-02-28
I've been listening to this cd ever since I bought it a few weeks ago. All I can say is that AH still has the pipes to bring the slow jam home. I always hit repeat on songs like "Your", the melodic "Still Here" is outstanding, also "Oh" is just as good as any slow jam on the radio today! AH could still use better production on the uptempo tracks, I believe that's what's holding his album back. Since "The Truth" AH hasn't really had a decent uptempo track to mold with. But his voice is still strong enough to make is plausible for listening. AH still can't spark the glory days of Guy since so many singers have bitten his style (incl R.Kelly) it's hard to keep reinventing yourself when people are waiting to rip your style. But the Nastyman doesn't disappoint on this cd at all, it's definitely worth the purchase if you're a true AH fan!!
4 stars for the voice 1 for the production.......2005-11-29
Aaron Hall is clearly one of the most underrated vocalists of the nineties. I remeber the first time I heard Aaron blow on the classic slow jams Let's Chill, Yearning For Your Love, Piece Of My Love and of course I Miss You. Aaron still has a very strong and capable voice but unfourtanely subpar production hurt this album. I can't think of any standout tracks on the album and one of the worst is the cover of Tears In Heaven. Here's hoping his next album will boast better production and he can become the singer he was destined to be.
nuff respect due!.......2005-09-15
I was reading the first review and i had to comment. First off let us get one thing straight. AH is the creator of this Nastyman style SO many others{even R KELLY} have copied their styles from. I ain't mad at others for copying but this album shows off AH's incredible vocal SKILLS and blows any of the other vocalists away. Songs like sorry, still here, all i think about and video show off AH's nastyman style as well as his vocal power. Uptempos are catchy and very different from stale everyday radio nonsense. And the real GEM on this album is the SEXY love making classic "OH". This song should get AIRPLAY and AH would get respect he deserves!AH might not get as much airplay as the other R&B artist, but this album shows that he still has the pipes and deserves the respect as the creator of this sexy style of music others are seeing rewards from.

A Nice Marvin Compilation.......2004-03-15
For a cheap posthumous compilation CD cobbled together with no thematic rhyme or reason, this CD hangs together surprisingly well. Anchored by his last great hit "Sexual Healing" and featuring the hard to find "Sanctified Lady", this album has a breezy, fun feel to it. Mostly made up of love songs like "Happy Go Lucky Lovers" and the dreamy, voluptuous "Walkin' In The Rain".
Although cheaply packaged, this is actually better than a lot of more expensive Marvin albums which seem to be so tightly formatted by some genre- "Greatest Duets", Greatest Love Songs",
"Greatest Hits of the 60's", etc. This has a little of everything and works really well and is better priced, used or new. Another highlight is the slinky R&B of "Aint it Funny{How Things Turn Around.} Marvin had a voice that will thrill music lovers for years to come.
Good Record R.I.P.......2000-04-15
This is a Good disc from Marvin Gaye.I Dug Happy Go Lucky,& of Course Sanctified Lady.that is the cut.Marvin Gaye is One Of The Greatest Artists that The World Has Ever Heard. What A Grand Talent.
"1".......2000-03-31
I only bought this CD for one song so I cant really speak for the whole album, but this CD contains the hard-to-find underground hit "Sanctified Lady". This is one of my ALL TIME favorite songs ever!

Whoops!.......2000-08-19
Joris Teepe shows that he has an open mind when composing. He does not settle into a certain style or groove, viewing instead a wide arc. Within his vision come the rearranging of a Dutch folk tune, the blues, bop sensibilities and a lot of freedom of expression. Teepe has players of high calibre to give vent to the music, which include five of his compositions, a Paul Simon tune and two standards. Chris Potter and Don Braden are perfect foils and brothers in harmony, undeniable testimony being seen in "Second Avenue Story" where their horns jab, probe, spar and entwine and then open up the vista for the others to jump in for a blistering encounter. "Chelsea Bridge" glows from a warm approach, swing being the main ingredient while "You Don't Know What Love Is" comes as a showcase for Teepe's harmonic conceptions and supple bass lines. The pulse of bop beats red hot on the title tune on which David Hazeltine contributes crisp, prancing lines and it all comes to a becoming end with a vigorous, melody happy "Up Jumped Spring". Not to mention Bruce Cox would be unfair. He not only keeps the pulse ticking with his drumming, he is a feeder with momentum!
