Editorial Reviews
From Grove Press Guide to Blues on CD
This native of Alabama used to front his own band and engage in after-hours bandstand tussles with Elmore James and Muddy Waters in Chicago taverns in the golden age. A member of Boston's blues codfish aristocracy in recent years, Mayweather flies quite high while playing harmonica on his very first feature album, egged on by keyboardist Ron Levy, guitarist Chris Brown, and three of Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson's regulars. No harm at all if his singing-splintery, wayward, cantankerously individualisti~doesn't take wing in any of the relumed classics that dominate the set. -- © Frank John Hadley 1993
