Born to a Jamaican father and a Swedish mother and raised in Stockholm, singer-songwriter Stephen Simmonds proves on his debut release that he's perfectly at home getting to the heart of the groove. A solid and, for the most part, soulful album, Spirit Tales displays Simmonds's reverence for Stevie Wonder's bittersweet, modulating minor chord swells and love credos--in "Judgment Day," Simmonds even croons "Love is in need of love today," echoing Wonder's classic Songs in the Key of Life opener. The whole affair gets almost too derivative at times, borrowing dollops of Stevie (the hook on "Universe" mirrors "Village Ghetto Land" in the most obvious way), as well as dabs from the Beatles (the piano loop from "One" sounds just like the intro on "Let It Be") and smidgens from D'Angelo (the syncopated "If I Was Your Man," though it makes sense since the ubiquitous Raphael Saadiq co-wrote it). But ultimately, Simmonds pulls through and comes across as a passionate, driven performer who will, hopefully, find his own style in albums to come. --Sylvia W. Chan

Absolutely Brilliant!.......2007-04-15
Spirit Tales is one of my all time favorites. I fell in love with this cd at first listen. Stephen's ultra-smooth, intoxicating vocals bear wisdom and refreshing vulnerability with lyrics that are infinitely more engaging than most of today's R&B and Neo/Alternative Soul.
I had the privilege of meeting Stephen and seeing him in concert in his hometown Stockholm a few years ago and was completely blown away. If you've attended one of his concerts, you know his live performance is an amazing experience.
Stephen is still creating and releasing great music on his own record label. Visit his website for the latest news and cds including "For Father" (2002), "This Must Be Ground" (2004), "Live At Polstjärnan" (2006).

I LOVE THIS CD. STEPHEN SIMMONDS SINGS OF UNIVERSAL LOVE IN THE SWEETEST VOICE. THE MUSICAL ARRANGEMENT IS EXCELLENT. I DARE YOU TO PUT THIS CD IN YOUR CAR STEREO AND JUST DRIVE...YOU WILL FEEL REFRESHED, ENERGIZED AND FIND YOURSELF IN A PLACE YOU HAVE NOT VENTURED BEFORE.
Diamon in the Rough.......2006-06-05
This album is absolutely SUPERB with a capital S for Stephen Simmonds. As a musician, I have to say this was an excellent first offering from this talented young artist. A friend I was visiting played one of the songs & I was at first intrigued but then I heard a couple others & I was hooked. I searched far & wide in all the obvious places but to no avail. I intended on downloading from iTunes but discovered 1 of the songs I really liked was excluded. Therefore I ended up having to order off Åmazon & it was there that I saw all the positive reviews. I can't for the life of me figure out why this album hasn't done better then it has here in the US. Anyone who thinks this album is not one of the best releases of a known or little known artist in the 21st century has got to be one narrow minded idiot, a mindless automaton or deaf or all of the above. He's got it all - beautiful voice, writing skills up the ying-yang, imagination, depth, dimension, Oh & did I mention he plays several instruments. And as for those who say he sounds like this one or that. . . . well, come on - let's be real!! Every artists sounds a little like someone these days - even the so-called greats sounded like someone coming before them. It's almost impossible not to be influenced to some measure when you've grown up listening to western music. So that's a poor argument. There are indeed fleeting moments where he reminds me of others (not just in voice but writing too): Simply Red, Eric Benet, KEM, Seal, Stevie Wonder etc. However, its clear he is who he is. He definitely has his own identity & I like it. What he manages to do is embrace some of those familiar sounds & manipulate it to his liking, then he stirs it up & churns it out into an unbelivable brew that never looses its punch & leaves you savoring every taste from beginning to end. DEFINITELY BUY THIS ALBUM - YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED!!.
Money well spent.......2006-02-14
Consider whats on the radio, on the video shows, in your cd player, and mp3 player...what are your friends listening to? Have you paid too much for albums that you hardly listen to?
For 65 cents, this is a chance you need to take. The album has 14 tracks and just keep telling yourself that you will find at least one song that'll move you. That's less than 6 cents a track for the risk you take AND you have it delivered to you.
For real, this album was such a surprise, I just had to share it with everyone I know that appreciates good smooth R&B-esque, trip-hoppy, sade-like, laid-back soul, really mellow-grooves...what adjective did I miss?
This is neo-soul. Its nothing original but what it IS, is a tasteful blend of "good vibe" music. Very atmospheric, cool echoes, fresh fitting vocals...sounds great on a good system.
get it, you wont regret it. they're practically giving it away, but not me. I'm keeping mine as proof.
Spirited Away.......2005-11-02
The first single I heard off this album ("I can't do that") was a nice track, it had a smooth beat, decent lyrics but what I fell for was Stephens voice, I spent most of the song wondering where he came from and why hadn't I heard about him before. After I bought this cd and had a chance to listen to it intimately, it didn't take long for me to decide that that first single was nothing compared to the rest of the tracks on the album. Stephen's voice is clean and full of conviction, you'll fall in love with it. Buy this cd and his others, you won't be sorry.

Hail To the Thief!.......2005-08-06
Despite the fact that most of our presidents are not worth remembering in music; this is none the less an interesting CD. Altissimo! has done its usualy bit of culling through the Marine Band library to dig out enough appropriate pieces to put together on one CD. No original recordings here! We should be glad that its a full length selection of over 60 mins for a change, instead of the old 45 min. cheats in the past! Still, the different sound qualities of the various tracks is distracting at times.
Most labels when they combine different recordings together usually list the recording date and who conducted the band at that time. Altissimo! has not graduated to that level of professionalism in their products yet. Hence we just get The US Marine Band, not when it was recorded and who might be directing it!
Fortunately, the quality of the Marine Band is so good that it does not matter what Altissimo! does in putting together a CD. That said, the music provides an interesting chronology of ceremonial music played at the White House over the years. The linear notes are an improvment over the past, when little or nothing was provided. All and all, not bad from what we have come to expect from Altissimo!
Hail to the Chief.......2005-02-02
Hail to the Chief is the latest of about twenty-seven CDs offered by "Altissimo!", which offer recordings of the USA's fine military service musical organizations. Until Altissimo!, these recording were very rare and just about impossible to find. Thanks to Altissimo! every one can appreciate and enjoy the fine music of these top-notch musical organizations.
The program in Hail to the Chief is a tribute to our presidents. It is a varied program that shows the depth of the music played by one of America's oldest, established in 1798, and finest musical organizations, the United States Marine Band. This CD contains twenty-one marches and other classical numbers from Sousa to Strauss to Tchaikovsky. Some of the music in the CD is rare and for this reason alone of interest to music history buffs. One of these selections is a recording of the "Star-Spangled Banner" using the earliest published arrangement (1814) of the anthem. Another is the "Solemn March" played at Lincoln's funeral. Also included a rarely recorded Sousa piece, "Easter Monday on the White House Lawn." There is also an historic 1906 recording of Scott Joplin's "Maple Leaf Rag."
The recording also contains excerpts from speeches made by five of our presidents four of which were from inaugural addresses. The program notes explain the musical selections and how each was of interest to the various presidents.
The only negative, and it is not with the CD itself, is that the program notes do not include recording dates, where recorded and who the conductor of the band was. I highly recommend this CD to all interested in the America's patriotic music as well as the serious collector of military music and those interested in the musical roots of our country.

Another Great Altissimo! Release.......2005-01-13
Listening to the latest CD from Altissimo! brought pleasure to my ears. Whether you like listening to ballads, waltzes, Hungarian Dances, or marches you will find something on this CD that you will love to listen to. This wonderful compilation presents the listener with music favored by 23 of our United States Presidents, and includes bonus tracks of excerpts from four inaugural speeches.
Hail to the Chief.......2005-01-11
Hail to the Chief is unique, educational and without question, absolutely wonderful!
I was initially puzzled by the selections but as I began to listen and read the short narrative that is offered I started to realize I was being taken on a very different trip through American history. Consequently, the impact of the program had a totally unexpected and fascinating effect.
I was not just mesmerized by the sounds I heard, the arrangements which were presented or the memorable utterances of some of our Chief Executives. I was completely entranced by the realization that these men and others who had held the office of President of the United States, had listened and reacted to the same music the CD offers. It gave me an insight into their humanity that text books cannot provide.
As an example, I hadn't known the original sheet music for the "Star Spangled Banner" was arranged differently from the way we listen to it today --- who know how many Americans heard it played that way?
I had never actually thought about the fact that Washington might have actually heard "Hail Columbia" played, just as I was hearing it.
I was a bit startled that Chester Arthur commanded Sousa to compose what became the "Presidential Polonaise" and tried to imagine how much pressure he, (Sousa), must have felt in doing the President's bidding. (By the way, after listening to that unquestionably superb composition of the "March King", I must admit despite its delightful sound, I'm very pleased that we no longer use that as the official march of the President and we have returned to "Hail to the Chief".)
I vividly recall watching the casket of President Kennedy being carried over the steps of the Capitol and listening to "The Navy Hymn" and the music recaptured that moment as if it was yesterday.
It wasn't solely the music I savored but it was also the historical images they engendered. Indeed, music affects all "ages"!
The CD is a professional product that will hopefully be enjoyed by thousands for many years to come.

Very nice neo-classical scores.......2006-12-06
There are some very nice art songs in these 3 musicals. Unlike Sondheim or Guettel, the songs follow quite traditional classical patterns and make for very nice but unchallenging listening.
Simply charming..........2002-07-14
These excerpts of the original musicals by Gary Schocker are simply a pleasure to listen to. This shows once more, that Musical Theatre litterature can range in a wide variety of styles. Far From the Madding Crowd is like a cross between The Secret Garden and Riverdance, complimented by the fantastic voices of Liz Callaway, Brian d'Arcy James, Victoria Clark, Emily Skinner, and many more. A must for any Musical Theatre lover who is constantly seeking the songs that "no one has yet heard".

Stephen Simmonds... the real deal!.......2006-05-20
This is one of the best of the best in hidden treasures. It was released in several countries under different album titles: Spirit Tales & Alone, with all of them being slightly different of each other by one or two tracks. It is truly a shame that more folks don't know of Stephen Simmonds. This brotha is the real deal! He writes, composes and performs on every track with a rich & soulful vibe. If you want a tastefully comprised album to chill and mellow out to, this is one to add to your collection. No disappointments here!
A Talented Brotha ---Don't SLEEP ON HIM ANY LONGER.......2003-08-30
I bought this album based on a review I read in Vibe Magazine back in 1997 and have not stopped spinning this CD. If you are true music fan I am sue you have your playlist of music you listen to on a regular basis and this CD is one of those on my list. This is another artist who was slept on because of the emergence of the Hip Hop scene which is cool but it's not the end all of soul music or R & B for that matter. Stephen Simmonds music and voice our fresh, innovatie, original and it is difficult to draw comparisons to other artist. He has released a new CD called "For Father" and you can purhcase it from his website DON"T SLEEP on this Brotha any longer!
Spituraly Lifiting.......2001-08-23
In these day's and times Hip-Hop Music has seemed to dominate our local air waves and record stores. During Rap Music's finest hour Profile Records was right in the thick of it with Run DMC, Rob Base and DJ Easy Rock and others. With the resurgence of R/B Soul music Profile is back at 'cha again with Stephen Simmonds. Folks This album is bad through and through!
This album is definitely of an Euro-Soul flava. Not since Soul 2 Soul, Loose Ends or Incognito have I heard such a well put together album of songs and a collective arrangement of melody. Stephen Simmonds is certainly a brother in tune with his spirit.
