4 out of 5 stars Switchfoot's best work?.......2007-01-24

Although I haven't listened to Switchfoot's two most recent albulms (Oh! Gravity and Nothing Is Sound) I consider New Way to Be Human their best up through Beautiful Letdown. Learning to Breathe is also great. If you don't have these albulms, by all means you should buy them at this price.

4 out of 5 stars Great addition for the Switchfoot fan.......2006-07-24

In a day where Switchfoot is known for hits such as "Meant to Live", "Dare you to Move", and "Stars", early songs like "Chem 6A", "New Way to be Human", and "Learning to Breath" remain unheard. This 3 cd set is a perfect additon for those who love the music of the San Diego rockers. Although dissapointing compared to their latter albums, there first three give songs that are awesome both musically and lyrically. In my opinion, each cd gets better as the group matures. I don't recommend this collcection for those who just enjoy Switchfoot with their top 20 spotlight songs. But if you enjoyed the Beautiful Letdown and Nothing is Sound, this is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! 3 CD's for the Price of 1!!!.......2006-03-22

I love Switchfoot. These guys are definitely one of the best comtemporary Christian groups out there. You can't beat having a 3 cd set for such a great price. The set comes with the original cd's (original covers) along with the books that were with the cd's. So you get all the great original songs for a great price. Learning to Breath, New way to be Human - just can't beat these songs. Enjoy!!!!

I love switchfoot....I didn't have the first 3 CDs so it was a perfect buy and at a reasonable cost. Definately recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Switchfoot Lover.......2005-08-29

Loved the Switchfoot triple CD! It was great to see how they've changed from their first CD through their third CD. One thing that didn't change is the great music they produce and can't wait for the new CD to come out in Sept. 2005. They are a great band and sound even better in person - if you ever have the chance to see them in person! This triple CD is a great value for the price.

2 out of 5 stars "Original" Score?.......2004-03-19

What a disappointment, receiving my eagerly awaited Born Free "Original Score" and seeing the 1999 re-recording date on the back - and indeed, this is a rather passionless, soulless thing. Musicians simply going through the motions. And no Matt Munro! Somebody deserves a punch in the mouth for this.

2 out of 5 stars A distant 2nd to the original.......2001-08-10

This re-recording of John Barry's original score from the movie Born Free falls well short of the original soundtrack. Its been many years since I last heard the original on LP but one thing became clear after listening to this newest effort. The re-recording comes across as being bland and sterile compared to the original and the choice of drums used as an accompaniment in some of the songs just doesn't work at all while in the original the drums blended perfectly with the orchestra as well as the culture. On the good side the new version does include some additional material not in the original. Overall this re-recording is a mildly enjoyable album despite its failings but hopefully someone in the powers that be will remaster the original soundtrack which I consider to be the very best work of John Barry not to mention among the finest movie soundtracks past or present.

4 out of 5 stars Not the original soundtrack!.......2001-05-09

My earlier review neglected to note that this is not the original soundtrack but a rerecording of the music from the movie. The original score is breathtaking and the rerecording faithful, but there is something missing from the rerecording, and that is more than the Matt Monroe vocal. I still await reissue of the original soundtrack.

3 out of 5 stars It'll have to do........2000-08-19

Imagine you own the rights to one of the best selling soundtracks in history, recipient of not just one, but two Oscars for the music, and you have YET to release it on CD (no names, but the initials are CAPITOL RECORDS). This new recording at least rates for being there on the shelves. It also presents music not on the original LP (but leaves off one of the best action pieces where Elsa chases the Hog). Barry is a meticulous producer and uses close-micing to make solo instruments stand out. I believe a Decca mic arrangement was used on this new recording, which gives an overall lush sound, but also one that can be muddy. Thus, some string passages are too quiet while some brass fanfares are unequally loud! And yes, the conducting tempos get sluggish here and there, especially toward the end. And that tentative percussion playing on the skins, not good.

This is music which is far more elaborate than you might be used to, when Barry didn't mind writing tons of music even though much of it wouldn't be used or would be sliced and diced beyond recognition. And I don't recommend you don't get it, but it's primarily because this is all there is. Not bad. But not as good as the original.

1 out of 5 stars NOT the original recording, and disappointingly dull........2000-06-02

This is not the original soundtrack recording from the movie Born Free. It is a new recording of John Barry's music, by Frederic Talgorn conducting the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Unfortunately, none of the exhuberance of the original soundtrack performances make it into Mr. Talgorn's conducting. In the main title, the drums are subdued and the final statement of the main motif (BORN FREE!) just sort of lolls out the speakers, nothing like the stirring rendition in the movie. "Elsa at Play" sounds more like sleepy elephants at play. And "Reunion/Born Free (end title) utterly failed to bring tears to my eyes--there is no tension, no resolution, it's just another lazy afternoon in the sun. I really can't imagine ever playing this CD again.

Album Description

The follow-up to the popular G-Clef's Jazzy Breaks, which was originally released in the 1990's on 12" LP format, here is, for the first time, even grittier and slightly more recent beats and grooves by the master of the "live loop", G-Clef himself, of Wu-Tang and Ghetto Philharmonic fame. This is a collection of never before released instrumentals from the late nineties, "drama" beat era.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars MORE EXCELLENT BEATS BY THE MAD KOMPOSA.......2004-07-10

All I can say is... this is much like G-Clef's jazzy breaks and if anything has less of the horns, and improvisational elements, but is still quite jazzy. The "drama" aspect is evident, but I still see this as more great chunky beats by G-Clef, the great producer of Ghetto Philharmonic/Soul Kid Klik fame. I love driving to this one, and even doing a little freestyling (which is rare for me lol) I reccomend this highly!

1 out of 5 stars A Disappointment.......2002-07-21

Stupid me, I should have read the reviews. This is not what I would call a "soundtrack;" it is a recording of the sound portion of the movie, dialogue and all. And, not remastered or anything. You can do as well by taping the movie when it is on TV and dubbing off the sound. Of course, it will be tape, not a CD, but you won't play it a lot anyway.

3 out of 5 stars The Third Man-50 Anniversary.......2001-03-29

I do agree with the others and was mislead of the album. I understood it would be the sound track only, still it is okay for the price. I sure would like to have the sound track without the voices.

3 out of 5 stars NEXT TIME WE'LL DIG DEEPER THAN A GRAVE..........2001-01-01

I originally ordered the 50th anniversary edition in the misconception I was purchasing the CD re-recording of the Karas LP. Not noted by previous reviewers and something that troubled me immediately when first listening to the CD is the opening scene setter. The opening speech sets the mood as Holly Martins enters Vienna. The original movie soundtrack had two introductions - one in English-English and the the American-English version with Mr. Cotton providing the narrative. Two different cultures and two different styles of opening a grand movie - not to say the British intro is inferior but I'd become accustomed to Mr. Cotton's intro. Remember, the story is told from the point of view of Holly Martins - it makes sense for the drama to commence with the voice of that down and out scribbler of western novels (Holly). The soundtrack has been cleaned-up a bit. Yet, to label this CD as a tribute to Anton Karas does neither the artist, film student nor the Karas collector any favors. This CD is an adequate introduction to the Third Man but nowhere near a polished product. C.A. FRY

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Money.......2000-09-19

I was bitterly disappointed when I got this CD. I have the original LP and looked forward to hearing Anton Karas's wonderful music in a pristine recording. Imagine my dismay when it merely turned out to be audio tracks from the movie. Soundtracks that contain dialogue are usually marked as such. As this was not the case with this CD I consider it deceptive packaging. Hopefully the REAL soundtrack will someday be made available.

2 out of 5 stars "Soundtrack" title is correct, but misleading........2000-09-08

The release of this CD was to be the fulfillment of my search for the original recordings of Anton Kara's brilliant musical background to The Third Man. It turned out to be nothing more than a recording of the "soundtrack" of the movie itself, or at least the portions of the movie that contained Karas' music. I could have done this myself!! Although I am partially pleased with getting the 'original' score by Karas, it is very distracting to hear the sounds of the actors' voices and other background noises of the film on top of that score. I have purchased other movie "soundtrack" CDs before, and none of them contained dialogue from the movie. In that regard, the use of the term "soundtrack" for this CD is very misleading.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2000-10-25

This album is horrible. Who ever gave the other reviews must have been paid. I have heard they're music before and RE-2000 lacks the drums in most tracks and the Live effect. If I could pick any notable song it would be "Hoodrat". To bad we could'nt get samples of these first.

5 out of 5 stars HOTNESS.......2000-06-21

Rare Essence has the hottest go-go around, like I said in the other review for we go on and on, "If you want it they got it and if they ain't got it suckafool you don't need it." So buy this album, it's hot.

3 out of 5 stars RE2000 - Something for the New Generation.......1999-12-18

RE2000 completes the latest release of Rare Essence -- a group that has been basically dominating the Washington, DC Go-Go culture for over 20 years. This project brings on new faces including the one of rapper/songstress Ms. Kim, who dazzles the speakers onlong with Byron Jackson on the soothing track, "As If You Were Mine." She also displays her lyrical flow on "Hoodrat." Also featured on the CD are Hip-Hop artist Redman, who swings lyrics back and forth with RE legend Donnell Floyd on "We Push," and DC rap artists Whop, POP and Tony Blunt. All in all, I would have to say that my favorite cuts on the CD are "Party In My Neighborhood," and "How Will I Know," which showcases vocals Adebayo Folarin. And of course it's always a pleasure hearing Andre "Whiteboy" Johnson get funky on his guitar.
