Customer Reviews:
Randy Holden!!!.......2006-11-22
This release was the 1st Blue Cheer album that I fell in love with, (it actually belonged to my younger brother when it came out) and it's still a favorite from this era. The reason for this is the Randy Holden fueled tracks on what was side two of the LP, a bass/ drums/ guitar work-out with Dickie Peterson and Paul Whaley. The two tracks #7) Piece of Mind and #8) Fruit & Iceburgs (sic) total over 13 minutes. The passion of the guitar playing and heart felt vocal delivery are chilling, especially F & I. This is among the best hard psych recordings ever made. The rest of the album is a lot more pedestrian; it's ok, but not anywhere in league with the Holden material. If you love psychedelic music and early 70's rock, this deserves a place in your collection, if it's not there already.

Christian music that is refreshing. You can't sit still during "New & Improved". I LOVE that song! They do a cool version of the Beatles tune "Here Comes The Sun". Great new female lead singer. This album is worth the bucks.

Customer Reviews:
A solid sophomore effort.......2000-06-12
Severin's second album on the Motown label features a contingent of heavy studio musicians. Motown spared no expense in securing Russ Kunkel and Jeff Porcaro to play drums, David Hungate on bass, David Paich on piano and accordian, Richard Bennet on guitar and pedel steel, Alan Lindgren on electric piano, synthesizer and mellotron, Joe Porcaro and Bobby Torres on percussion, Steve Leeds on sax, Robert Grinnedge on steel drum and Dean Webb on mandolin. Background vocalists for the album include Jennifer Warren, Carol Carmichael, Bobbi Thomas, and Jules Shear. The album made Billboard magazine's Recommended LPs list. Billboard referred to the album as a "pleasant and soft LP from singer/songwriter who is divided between the John Denver laid back approach and a slightly more bouncy sound. The album contains a good variety of cuts and is much more impressive than last LP. Best Cuts: 'Love Notes From Denver,' 'Love Song,' and 'Cooking School'." In spite of all this, I think the album comes far short of Severin's debut album due to a much weaker group of songs. I'm guessing Motown rushed Severin way too much; his next album didn't come out for another 20 years!

Customer Reviews:
Nice try but the track listing gives this one away.......2006-04-29
What you have here is an expensive reissue of Quiet Riot's 1999 studio album, 'Alive and Well', which was released on Deadline Records. The record label listed here specializes in repackaging previously released albums as high-priced imports and then changing the title to hope people are tricked into buying it again. 'New and Improved' is the title of this release but don't let that fool you into buying this cd.
There are only two good things to report here. One is that the track listing is identical to 'Alive and Well' from 1999. Even the cover art is similar. All that is different is the album title. The other good thing here, as you may already know, is that the music from 'Alive and Well' was a great addition to the Quiet Riot catalog. Tracks 1 through 8 were new songs recorded by Quiet Riot, although you may be interested in knowing that lead singer Kevin DuBrow actually wrote the songs "Alive and Well" and "Slam Dunk" several years before the 'Metal Health' lineup of Quiet Riot reunited in 1997. He had worked on those two songs when he wasn't even a member of Quiet Riot in the late 1980's and early 90's. "Slam Dunk" was written by DuBrow but recorded by a band called Pretty Boy Floyd. "Alive and Well" (the song) had a different title with different lyrics but it was simply reworked. Whatever the case, these eight tracks that open up the album are a return to Quiet Riot's traditional sound.
Track 9, "Highway to Hell", originally appeared on an AC/DC tribute album called 'Thunderbolt.' This is a pretty good version, overall. It won't make you discard your old AC/DC albums but it does beat tracking down the original tribute album if you are a major fan of Quiet Riot who needs everything they've ever released. The remaining six tracks were brand new versions/remakes of classic Quiet Riot tunes rerecorded in the studio (circa 1999) for the purpose of this album. These remakes sound very similar to the way they do when Quiet Riot plays them live, which I can confirm since I've seen them live four times.
I don't recommend buying 'New and Improved' by Quiet Riot. Do the band a favor and buy 'Alive and Well' if you don't already have it. I have a feeling none of the members of Quiet Riot will ever see royalties from this high priced import. The original 'Alive and Well' cd is much cheaper. Not only that, the track listing and running order is exactly the same. Why would you want to pay extra for same thing? I'd recommend reading separate reviews for the 'Alive and Well' album if you need more convincing.
I'm giving this two stars only because the actual music on this cd is great stuff if you are into Quiet Riot, no doubt about that. However, it has already been released years before and there is nothing new to be found on this cd.

Blue Cheer - 'New Improved! Blue Cheer' (Repertoire).......2006-10-11
Originally released in 1969,as this was Blue Cheer's third album. Almost as good as their first two lp's,'Vincebus Eruptum' and 'Outsideinside' (see my reviews on both). Even though bassist/vocalist Dickie Peterson and drummer Paul Whaley are joined by two 'new' guitarists Randy Holden and Bruce Stephens,'New Improved!' is still a worthy pick.Tracks that impressed me the most were "West Coast Child Of Sunshine"(a good psychedelic piece),"Aces 'N Eights",their Dylan cover "It Takes A Lot To Laugh,It Takes a Train To Cry" and "Honey Butter Lover".Find a site that offers sound clips of this CD,then go from there.
improved indeed!!.......2006-06-06
This one really showed a tighter more refined sound..Leading in with that wha sound your hooked!.. A lot of more catchy but certainly not commercial tunes.. I wore out two origional albums, forgot about them,, recently got in the mood for the CD..As with the album nicely recorded for the time.. We grew up with acid rock but there certainly is room for this style again now.. Recommended for all us old hippies and those who want to explore this great style..
Cheers to BLUE CHEER.......2005-10-05
I bought NEW!IMPROVED!BLUE CHEER originally on LP in the early '70's because I'd heard the name from others 'in the know' and besides, loved the primary colors and cartoonish graphics, sort of reminding me of those CHEAP THRILLS album graphics. In those days, often you might find one side of an album was your favorite, so my side 2 got worn out (Peace of Mind/Fruit & Icebergs/Honey Butter Lover) while I ignored side 1.
Well, as is often the case, I was wrong about side 1, and it only took me 33 years to realize that fact. Instead of trying to describe the influences I hear, take a listen yourself...you might find BLUE CHEER was actually ahead of so many other later groups that caught on; yepper, they were influencers instead of influencees. Even as members moved on, they hooked up with other 'obscure' names which you will find in any number of retrospectives and liner notes for years to come, appearing with such entities as Norman Mayell, ex-member Sopwith Camel, (who at one time played with Mike Bloomfield in a band called THE GROUP, which included a bass player called Silver Sid, ex-bassist for Roy Rogers, of all people).
BLUE CHEER even had Hank Cicalo as a mixer and engineer (he also did the first post Don Kirschner Monkees album, HEADQUARTERS); on it, Micky Dolenz and Mike Nesmith scribbled down some control room jibberish lyrics set to a Chuck Berry knock-off progression/melody, and gave Cicalo songwriting credits, of which he purchased a house with his royalties.
My only reservation in listening to this CD, even with 2 great bonus tracks, and Bob Dylan's "It Takes a Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry", is the fact it does not seem to come up to current digital remastering standards (this copy produced in 1994)...HONEY BUTTER LOVER, a way too short, beautiful end/counterpoint of the heavier songs of "side" 2, for example, is too quiet and unclear in it's equalization; somehow it sounds more muffled than the scratchy sounds of the original abused LP I have stored in my own memory banks...and...what WERE those lyrics?
My recommendation is to buy this album; it is the closest thing you may ever come to in terms of the old 'underground/heavy' groups. Known in it's day as 'the world's loudest band' they were precursors to Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and all their generations of progenies and imposters.
zen motion dumptruck on fire.......2001-04-22
Reviewer: udrah (see more about me) from south california Side 1: the "stoned acid crazy biker sound " of the first 2 LPS is gone and in its place is some wacky surf psychedelia that occasionally 'works'. BUT the white blues stuff is even less successful....HOWEVER...Side 2 is dominated by guitarist Randy Holden, who offers 3 slow zen metal heavy pieces that growl & grumble like a slow motion dumptruck on fire. Holden creates a unique sound (that he himself ) or other guitarists have not been able to replicate since. 2 stars for side one, but 8 for side 2 ....hence the 5 star rating.
Blue Cheer evolves from psychodelic rock to classic rock........1999-10-16
Fans of early Blue Cheer won't want to miss this amazing transformation from loud and raucus rock to fine tuned and tasteful rock and roll. Side two of the album in particular flows through Peace of Mind and Fruit and Icebergs. Peace of Mind is filled with mild and powerful musical statements. Some of the absolute best dual lead guitar solos ever performed will absolutely wreck you. Fine and somewhat eerie harmonies will move you. An emotional masterpiece. Fruit and Icebergs is performed in the best 3 piece rock band tradition. Reminiscent of the glory days of Cream, Leslie West and Mountain and others of that time with the originality you've come to expect from Blue Cheer. Certainly every song on the album is worthy of high mention and praise but if these two songs in particular don't strike you in the rock and roll jugular then your veins are tapped out.
