Customer Reviews:
Smooth And Funky All At Once.......2003-08-28
An utterly underrated mid 80's venture for the Players
"Garduation" stars strong with two high-energy grooves in
"Fast Track" and "Follow Me",countered only by the B-side's
"All Night",making way for the albums closing bluesy rock 'n roll
of "So Glad I Got My R&B",the most orginal and clever tune the
Ohio Players ever came up with. But when you get to "School Girl"
and "Now Is The Time",the rest of the album including those two
fit into the Whitney Housten-style "big ballad" 80's R&B sound
that seemed the drain the soul out of Afro Amerian popular music
in this era and up to today. An excellent outing but also showing
a symtom of the times.
Nice Album Cover Watered down Album.......2002-08-05
Album Covers kept on the Right path for the Players but the Music just kept taken a Beaten.Billy Beck is cool on certain songs&there are some moments here&there but Compared to there Hey Day this is like a Watered Down Version of the Band.some of the music is alright but there isn't any stand-out material.
Ohio Players Rule.......2001-11-05
I really didn't expect much from this Album, especially when I found out (after I ordered it) that Sugarfoot isn't on it! I was pleasantly surprised when I listened to it though. It's still good music. (Billy Beck does a good job on the lead vocals. He can even get some of Sugar's snarl). It isn't classic Ohio Players funk but it is a good album for a group who's supposed to have been "past their prime".
Sweet High School Memories Brought Back Again!.......2001-05-12
Although the Ohio Players are best known for their smash-hit albums of the 1970s, "Graduation" has great potential! This album will cause anyone to reflect back on their high school years, be them good or bad! Yes, this album is a true collector's item! Tracks like "Follow Me" and "All Night" highlight the uptempo flavor of the album, while tracks like "Now Is The Time" and "Sight For Sore Eyes" provide inspiration and comfort. I took off a star because the album seems to lack that "original" Ohio Player sound. Overall, this 1984 effort by the pioneers of funk is exceptional. It will make you dance, cry, and most of all, it will bring back memories of your high school years. I strongly recommend this album to any lovers of R&B and soul music. You won't be disappointed!

Giselle is the first of the great "classical" ballets, which is a bit confusing because all of the classical ballets date from the romantic period. What "classical" means in this context is a full-length theater piece in several acts that tells a coherent story. There were only two countries where this sort of entertainment became popular--France and Russia, and the great composers of classical ballet were, accordingly, Tchaikovsky, Glazunov, Prokofiev, Adam, and Delibes. Of course, there were many others, but they don't get played that often, for good reason. Giselle is a typical "fairy tale" ballet full of good tunes and nice, strong dance rhythms. It's not as great as Delibes or Tchaikovsky, but taken on its own terms, it's a good listen. This performance makes the music shine. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
The most satisfying Giselle on disk.......2007-04-06
Let's start by getting a few facts straight on the other reviews. Anatole Fistoulari and the LSO perform the Giselle on this CD, while Antal Dorati and his Minneapolis forces are the ones reponsible for the Graduation Ball and Gaite Parisienne. Starting with Giselle, Fistoulari turns in the most satisfying account of this work to be found on CD today. It's true that other "complete" recordings include about 20 to 25 minutes of additional music, but one wonders how much of this material was originally intended for this ballet -- or actually composed by Adam at all? There's a bit of mystery surrounding the Paris Opera Ballet orchestral parts, as lots of changes and modifications were made over the years. When Fistoulari made this recording back around 1960, he used the complete score then in use in Paris. When I compare it to others, I find that the additional music in the other recordings is pretty boring stuff compared to the inventiveness and charm of the rest of the music. Moreover, the orchestration is much more effective here -- particularly in the percussion department and the use of brass. Another very important difference is the ending of the ballet, which has been altered in more recent renditions to include a soft fadeout of music whereas the original has an orchestral flourish that corresponds with the final curtain drop; the new approach is HUGELY unsatisfying. Veteran ballet conductor that he was, Fistoulari has a natural flair for this music and is more successful than so many other conductors like Zhuraitis, Mogrelia and Michael Tilson Thomas. Bonynge on Decca gives Fistoulari a good run for his money, and that version would be the one to buy if you really want to hear all of the (pretty forgettable) extra music that's attributed to this ballet score. The London Symphony is in top form for Fistoulari, and Mercury's original three-channel stereo recording has ultra-realistic orchestral depth and bloom like you wouldn't believe.
Another veteran conductor from the ballet pits, Antal Dorati directs a sinewy, frenetic Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra in the Gaite Parisienne and the Graduation Ball numbers. For once, a full symphony orchestra actually sounds like a pit band -- and you really do feel like you're experiencing an actual ballet performance. Dorati himself arranged the score for Graduation Ball for the Ballet Russes back in the late 1930s. Here as well, there are two versions of the score ... and the one done here is the better of the two (Dorati made an earlier recording with the Dallas Symphony, and later recorded the alternate version, as did Bonynge and several others ... I find this reading more exciting than these alternatives). The Gaite Parisienne score is cut by about 15 minutes ... and Arthur Fiedler and Eugene Ormandy have done the complete score better anyway. You can also hear this music performed by the arranger Manual Rosenthal -- but by all means avoid his last recording (of three) which he made in his 90s for Naxos, released a year or two before his death ... that one is just WAY too slow.
An artistic milestone .......2006-04-01
Antal Dorati figure has been frequently associated with Hungarian and Russian composers, but he possessed a superb good tatse at the time to conduct notable pieces of the ballet repertoire. This Giselle may be well considered as a notable example about what I am talking about.
Lyricism, grace, and absolute sense of serene charm make of this recording an absolute must for all those who love this ballet.
Totally recommended.
Credits?.......2006-03-30
The Amazon.com product listing states that Fistoulari conducts Adam's Giselle and that Dorati conducts the other titles. Yet most of the reviews congratulate Dorati for the Giselle.
Well, which is it? If these auditors are unable to read a jewel case insert, it bodes ill for their reviews. Who conducts what?
The Living Art : Ballet At Its Best.......2003-05-10
Recorded in the 60's, Antal Dorati conducted this version of Giselle with unmatched success. Dorati was a fan of the dance-art, and had worked with the Paris Opera Ballet, the Monte Carlo Ballet and various American and European dance companies. The passionate, soulful and precise, artistic dedication he spent on his ballet scores were always impressive. The orchestra becomes a dynamic background to the footwork and leaps of physical movement from the dancers. Giselle is considered the first official ballet to many. It was certainly a trend setter. The Romantic movement of the early 19th century inspired writers and artists to leave behind their dull, worldy affairs and retreat into worlds of whimsy, romance and adventure. Adolphe Adam, the Paris-born composer of Giselle, based it from the novella by the German author Heinrich Heine, who wrote about a tragic love unfulfilled against the backdrop of the Black Forest, the Reine River and the elusive, terrifying night creatures called the Willis- jilted brides who dance long after their death as ghosts and lure men into their own deaths.
Such intensity striked Adolphe Adam and with brilliant choreography by experts like Jules Perrot, he caused quite a sensation when he introduced it to the Paris Opera ballet. It was an instant beloved classic. The signature women in white tutus, which would later be used in Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" originates in the dance of the Willis. Giselle is a beautiful peasant girl, with a nearly unhealthy fondness for dancing and daydreaming.
Like most girls of the 1840's, Giselle dreams of a handsome prince who would rescue her from living in rustic squalor. The dashing hunter Albrecht is in fact a prince in disguise. But apparently, he was seeking love and adventure outside the dull, loveless and conventional society in his immediate royal family. He does fall in love with Giselle, but must compete with the likes of Hilarion, a village man who also desires Giselle for his wife. It is discovered that Albrecht is not only a prince, but an engaged man. This sends the heartbroken Giselle into madness and she dies.
And that's only Act 1 ! Remember, the dead are not as they seem. This is especially true for the bride-ghosts, the Willis. They have initiated Giselle as one of them, their hordes lead by the sinister Queen Myrtha. When Albrecht and Hilarion come to pay homage to the fallen Giselle at her tomb, the Willis appear and entrap them. Hilarion is killed. But only upon Giselle's intervention is Albrecht saved. The bittersweet, tragic ballet is beautiful to behold years later, eventhough the musical score, tailor-made to fit the primitive techniques of the Paris Opera ballet. It is this light, lush music that makes it a capsule for a time in history that ballet lovers surely revel in recalling. This is also the time of the paintings by Edgar Degas.
Antal Dorati brings Giselle alive once again fresh from the 60's and enjoyable today. All ballet fans have to start from here.
A Ballet Lover's Dream.......2002-08-30
Antal Dorati, who was the greatest interpretor of ballet music (especially that of Tchaikovsky ballet) proves that he is equally masterful on the dance music on this cd. Giselle, by Adolphe Adam, is regarded as the very first Romantic ballet, complete with a strong story and characterization. The primitive music of the period is evident, but if you truly like the hidden notes and the tragic love story the music tells, you will overlook this. Giselle is about a young woman who falls madly in love with Albrecht, a prince who is in fact engaged to another woman. Giselle dies before the close of act one and in the second act, she has become a spirit of the night. The rest of the story is as heartbreaking and dismal as any Gothic romance novel. As for Offenbach's Gaite Parisienne, the charming French cabaret atmosphere is delightfully rendered by Dorati. Offenbach was after all the greatest French Belle Epoque composer, whose operettas have delighted people worldwide and serve as a reminder of a leisure-class lifestyle so far from our own. Graduation Ball by Johann Strauss is a bubbly ballet about young girls dancing with men at a graduation/prom sort of deal. This is definately a must if you like ballet or simply Dorati's artistry.

Customer Reviews:
Hmmm. VERY interesting........2004-04-12
This album was recorded in Nashville, produced by steel guitar wizard Pete Drake, and contains a song written by ex-Monkee. Mike Nesmith. It was recorded in 1982 when Bob Flannigan and Ken Albers were the only longstanding Freshmen in the group. The new Freshmen should have felt right at home in Nashville. Autie Goodman's last nane and Dennis Grillo's appearance were evocative of white Southern Gospel quartets. The Freshmen did vocals and horns, and Nashville cats did the rest. The first half of the album consists of Freshmen standards. As usual, they sound just like the originals, except the unison portions of the vocals are so together as to sound uncanny, and Drake's production and Grady Martin's guitar change the texture and flavor of the tracks enough to make the sound refreshingly different. I like it. Songs in the second half of the album are newer, and some of them are written by country writers. They are pleasant and easy to listen to, but I prefer the first half. It was hard to rate this album. I am glad to have it in my collection, but it will seldom see the CD player, compared with FIVE TROMBONES, FIVE TRUMPETS, or LOVE LOST. Certainly not recommended as an introduction to the Four Freshmen.

Customer Reviews:
2 great songs........2004-07-30
On this single, you get 2 great hits:
The Itch: this song was such a great dance song for the time it was released when there wasn't much like it. It still holds up well, too.
Graduation: The theme of an entire generation of people, making this our generation's biggest graduation/going on theme to this point. There has been no song surpassing it in recent times
this is a cover song.......2001-05-01
i had heard the origanial of this song in '88! this is a cover song ok,go on cdnow and READ who wrote this "song" NO credit is there! that's because it's a cover song! this song is HIGHLY overrated in it'self! "friends forver" is a dillisional song about having a marge show up and saying "as we go on we remeber all the times we spent together as we go on from whatever we'll always be friends forever" this song itself gives a FALUSE sense of what REALLY happens after gradutaion! you will NEVER be missed after you leave. hell some schools are so packed your lucky enough if you get in the picture! this song just avoid it it's NOT worth listening to! it's so shallow and arrogant!
Best Song in the world.......2001-01-22
Vitamin C's the itch is the best song i ever heard. The lyrics are really really catchy and the background music is very very cool. I give it two thumbs up. I extremely reccommend that you buy this single. It is the bomb. You will get hooked to the song and listen to it everytime.
Is You Be Fellin' "The Itch" Again!!!.......2001-01-20
Vitamin C is a great singer and some people don't apreciate the meaning to "THE ITCH". Everyone took the thought of the song literally and were thinking of masquito bite, ect. The meaning of the song is cool and makes me love the song even more, and it flows more to the fact that someone is needing something or want something they had before and wan't back. The big heart stealer of this single is that is has a Remix of "THE ITCH".
Track Listings:
1.) The Itch (Radio Edit) = This version is just like that of the original except the fact the it is cut short by about 30 seconds.
2.) The Itch (Original Version) = This is the version most of us are familiar with and that we have seen the video to on MTV.
3.) Graduation (Friends Forever) = This is Vitamin C' strong hit and by the looks of it, off her upcoming album "MORE" I'm sure she'll have at least a couple strong hits hopfully toping this one.
4.) The Itch (DJ Scribbles Club Mix) = This remix is just great being that it is the only remix that Vitamin C put out for The Itch. The beats to this are pretty funky, yet it doesn't sound anything similar to the original.
Peeps, you don't know what your missing out on, hurry up and buy this single, its well worth your money. Infact any remix is well worth the money. This single won't do you wrong, you will "LOVE IT LONG TIME"
