Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Eddie Murphy stars in the remake of this classic flick, but his presence is curiously absent on this soundtrack comp (not even a sound bite from the funnyman). Instead Dr. Dolittle is a solid collection of R&B and hip-hop heavyweights, including Ray J., Montell Jordan, Aaliyah, and All Saints. While there's nothing too groundbreaking here, the album does have its strong points. As the disc progresses, the ballads are left behind and the songs shift into high gear. Timbaland's up-tempo "Da Funk" and Eddie Kane & DeVille's "Push 'Em Up" are party-ready, and Dawn Robinson does a funky rendition of Aretha Franklin's "Rocksteady." But by the time the Sugarhill Gang codas with "Ain't Nothin' but a Party," you realize the bash is just warming up. --Jason Verlinde

Vibe
Dr. Dolittle's line-up--ranging from sweet, mid-tempo R&B to bouncin' southern bass--has little to do with the film's story line, but it sure can make you dance.

3 out of 5 stars Dr. Dolittle Soundtrack Does Little For Me.......2002-12-30

This is an O.K. soundtrack. I'm being generous with this rating. I really didn't like the soundtrack as a whole, but some songs were pretty good. A lot of the songs are pretty good, but not that rememberable. The only really really good song (in my own opinion) is Aaliyah's "Are You That Somebody?" Now that song alone deserves 5 stars all the way! It's a shame she had to waste such a hit on this soundtrack. She shoulda kept that baby for her own album!!! The only song on this CD that I really can't stand is the All Saints version of "Lady Marmalade". Compared to the new Christina version, it reeks. Other than that, the soundtrack is o.k. overall. I wouldn't really reccomend this, I liked the movie better. BUT you should read the other reviews and get other opinions, too! Don't let me ruin it for ya. So, enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Music you won't expected to hear off a kid's movie. Rich R&B.......2001-10-14

Even if you think Dr. Dolittle is the worst movie ever you still needed to pick up this album! Of course Aaliyah's "Are You That Somebody?" is the thunder in this CD but it has great songs from Ray J. and Timbaland. Like said in past review Aaliyah was the ONLY and emphasis on ONLY r&b song to hit #1 on TRL which is a shame because I would like to see more songs like this at #1 but rewarding to know Aaliyah showed the Pop and Rock world who's boss. Buy the CD, you'll like it.

Love you Aaliyah! You will always be remembered! This song was the 1st song I ever liked. This CD was my first CD ever. Rest in Peace and Glory! God Bless!

5 out of 5 stars A party just waiting to happen.......2001-06-06

There are so many awesome hip-hop and R&B songs on here. Timbaland had a huge part in producing, writing and remixing on this album (He even has his own song on here) giving this album a whole Timbaland flavor. The obvious highlight here is Aaliyah's Are You That Somebody? which is probably the only R&B song to ever hit #1 on TRL. It is really catchy and has a great bass. Another highlight is All Saint's version of Lady Marmalade, remixed by Timbaland. While they don't really capture the flair of the original song, their voices sound very smooth and stylish, bringing a whole new personality to it. 69 Boyz's stadium smash Woof Woof is also included. Former En Vogue member Dawn Robinson does an interesting cover of Aretha Franklin's Rocksteady. Already big namers like Montell Jordan and Ginuwine also provide some quality tracks. If you like R&B and are a fan of Timbaland's music, or music that sounds like his style, then pick this up for sure. It's a great collection of some killer songs.

5 out of 5 stars Gotta have it...........1999-12-31

Timbaland had a big hand in this album. Very tight production, good artists, good music. If you like R&B with the new 'Timbaland feel', buy it.

1 out of 5 stars STOLEN TRACK FOR DEBORAH COX- NEVER GOT PAID.......2007-07-22

Just for the record. I submitted our song for Deborah Cox on this CD to Family Tree Entertainment (managers of OUTKAST, NICOLE RAY, DONNELL JONES- at the time), and they stole my song. They changed it up a little bit, then remixed it, and never paid me. WHere's my money "FUZZY"? The industry is horrible. I had this copyrighted, and all that but cant get my money. They didnt even try to pay for ghostwriting. So when submitting material, be careful. They wonder why bad things happen to supposedly nice people. God is watching, so I just wanted to tell someone. Why am i broke and the song did well overseas. HELP!!!!!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Dr. Feelgood.......2005-10-13

This 13 song soundtrack from the movie, Dr. Dolittle 2 fit the concept of the movie as a mainstream pop appeal to it. For R.L., Snoop Dogg & Lil' Kim, they provided a West Coast, fun groove on "Do U Wanna Roll (Dolittle Theme)". "Tameeka" by Mario with Fabolous is a song about getting this one woman, but trying to play her and never hearing from her again. O-Town hit it right on the nail with the highlight track "We Fit Together". Probably the hardest song that nearly disrupts the album and movie's chemistry is "What It Is (Part II)" by Flipmode Squad featuring Busta Rhymes (with Kelis). Next with Lil' Zane provided a near club tune as they were "Lookin' For Love" while inside the club. And the last song, "If I Knew" by Medeiros, and the last worth mentioning is a slower song that ties in with the feel and direction of this LP. Not a bad movie, which was intended for children's viewing, but not enough singles and or solid work.

4 out of 5 stars R&B OST, anyone?.......2002-05-31

I don't really care about the flick itself and I don't intend to see this "sequel" (The original movie was horrible, isn't?)

Anyway, the most interesting in this Dr. Doolittle stuff is the soundtrack. Although I'm not sure why some boybands like O-Town ("We Fit Together") or LFO (Life is Good) are in this more r&b fitting movie but the CD is still okay.

Some of the good stuff in here are "Cluck Cluck"- The Product G&B, the awesome collaboration of RL, Snoop Dogg & Lil Lil' Kim's "Do You Wanna Roll", the rough tounged rapping of Flipmode Squad's "What It Is (Part II)". If you enjoy more of the r&b scene, these are the tracks that will relax you somehow-Alicia Keys' "Rear View Mirror" and Luther Vandross' oozing voice "If I Was The One". Other neat songs would be Next's "Lookin' For Love", Jimmy Cozier's "Two Steps" and Deborah Cox' "Absolutely Not".

4 out of 5 stars Good Party Music.......2002-03-07

I initially bought this CD for the "We Fit Together" by O-Town track. I came to find that there are many other great songs on this CD... all in all, I wouldn't rate it excellent, but pretty good. Most of the tracks are fun and have a good beat... would make a great CD to play at a party or play while working out.

5 out of 5 stars just brillant.......2002-01-17

this CD is simply great, all the artists in it are up there..
A keys, Deb Cox ... you can also feel the touch of Carlos McKinney who did a great job producing. actually if anybody know how to contact him (webpage...) just tell me.
I'll finish saying if you're into R&B that's a must listen to stuff.

4 out of 5 stars one of my favorite '60s scores!.......2006-06-21

I saw "Doctor Dolittle" when it first came out in 1967 and have loved the songs ever since.I even owned an original copy of the
old 20th Century-Fox Records soundtrack album for years,and it's
one of my favorite 1960s scores.Like the movie itself, this is an underrated gem!Leslie Bricusse's songs are simply delightful,
and they are beautifully played by the Twentieth Century-Fox
Studio Orchestra under the masterful direction of Lionel Newman
and his staff.Although they are obviously not professional singers,Rex Harrison and Samantha Eggar do very well here,
certainly much better than Richard Harris and Vanessa Redgrave did in Warner Bros.' "Camelot" that same year.Anthony Newley,
Richard Attenborough, and young William Dix also do well.My
favorites are "Fabulous Places" and "Something In Your Smile".
This is a terrific CD that provides an hour of good listening
and wonderful memories of the movie.

5 out of 5 stars I've never seen anything like it!.......2006-05-13

Talk to the animals
I've never seen anything like it

You've got to see this play. I'ts amazing.

4 out of 5 stars Dr. Dolittle.......2005-10-13

Talk To The Animals, the haunting Something In Your Smile, and many other good songs on this CD of the 60's film. Be sure that you're buying the soundtrack - some people have complained about some terrible version where they just have other people sing the songs, and it isn't the real soundtrack. A few boring songs on the soundtrack version, but far more good than bad. This is the only movie I know of that Samantha Eggar appeared in but didn't die in.

4 out of 5 stars "If only I could sing (with the animals)... joke. i love rex.......2005-04-26

I, like so many others, loved this movie as a kid. And I, like so many others, love this movie still. I could not locate the wonderful music from the 1967 hit anywhere, until recently, when I saw this soundtrack and bought it immediately. Amazon, once again, I salute you for having the most wonderfully obscure things that are essential to my life.

But I forget. This is about the soundtrack. My brother and I have always danced about singing "My friend the doctor says, duh duh duh duh duh duh duh", the catchy opening song that sets a trend for the rest of the songs--- Anthony Newley co-wrote the songs- Anthony Newlety has the best songs. From his cheery opening, to the haunting Beautiful Things and uplifting After Today, you cannot help but love his (fake) Irish vibrato that really makes you soar.

If you are a fan of Rex Harrison, then you will really love the sing-songy/talk of the famous Talk to the Animals. If you arent accustomed to Rex's work, go buy My Fair Lady, learn to love it, and come back and listen to this. If you dislike Rex Harrison immensely, buy this CD for the other songs, and just skip his three big ones.

Rex's Like Animals is best seen, but is also really clever when heard. His other good song is When I Look in Your Eyes, a serenade for a seal, which is considered by an older Guatemalan Psychiatrist that I know, to be the greatest love song of all time.

The reason why this really wonderful soundtrack got a four? It was close to a five, but then I listened to some of the tracks betweened the excellent ones I mentioned. Save for (now Sir) Richard Attenborough's Ive Never Seen Anything Like It, they are mediocre. There is no way of getting around. The songs were not written for females (although many enjoy the pretty At the Crossroads), and others (including the finale) are too children's movie cute.

Save for my minor gripes, the Doctor Dolittle soundtrack is really a wonderful CD, filled with immensely talented actors singing memorable songs.

4 out of 5 stars Such a simple beauty.......2003-12-22

Even though I'm a real sucker for 'old' movies, especially musicals, Doctor Dolittle will always be one of my favourites, which it owes in great deal to the splendid songs. It was my mother's favourite film while she was growing up, and I suppose she has passed that fire on to me! We know songs like 'My friend, the doctor' (my personal favourite!) and 'Talk to the animals' by heart, so you can imagine how thrilled I was when I finally found the soundtrack! Anthony Newley is absolutely brilliant as the co-composer and singer of some of the best songs in the film, among which are 'Beautiful People' and 'After Today'. When listening to the songs, you immediately recall the beautiful simplicity you can also find in the film. It is an atmosphere which transport us back to the fairytales of our childhood -and who wouldn't want that?!

Well, there I was surfing through Amazon looking for CD's which would remind me of my childhood. Then I found it... Doctor Dolittle!!!! All the names were there on the cover; Rex Harrison and co... but alas it was a dud. Despite the promise of hearing the vocal talents of Mr.Harrison and Mr.Newley, what is available is very disapointing. DO NOT BUY if you are expecting what I, and a lot of people, were.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I had expected.......2002-08-05

Thought I was ordering the CD from the soundtrack of the original motion picture (1967)......considering under the title DOCTOR DOLITTLE were listed Leslie Bricusse, Anthony Newly, Rex Harrison and Samatha Eggar. Songs 1 through 5 were from the show, however, sung to by vocalists totally unfamiliar to me. Songs 6 through 10 were a variety of young children's nursery rhyme songs and quite juvenile at that!

Every song from DOCTOR DOLITTLE is absolutely wonderful and unique in itself and expresses so much feeling and emotion when sung by it's original cast members and this is really what I prefer exposing the young children to whom I work with each and every day.

Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to vent my dissapointment in this CD under your customer reviews.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Worth the wait! More wonderful than I could have imagined!.......2000-10-11

What a great recording! It's Bobby Darin at his best.

I ordered this CD with little knowledge of the contents. I knew of it's existence, but had never actually seen one available. I had waited for a long time to get this recording and naivite wasn't going to stop me. Having heard on various compilations only two of the ten tracks, I was hoping for swinging arrangements like the two I knew and lots of Bobby Darin "hups" and ad libs. I didn't get those, but got much more.

"Dr. Dolittle" is the score, with words and music by Leslie Bricusse, to the 1960's version of the film (starring Rex Harrison of "My Fair Lady" fame) as sung by Bobby Darin. The ten songs took Bricusse 18 months to write and consequentially, each one is a gem unto itself. There are 4 up-tempos, 1 bluesy ballad and 5 traditional ballads. Bobby sings them all with his characteristic charm and flair. As is true of the Bricusse/Newley penned "Once in a Lifetime," this music fits perfectly into Darin's style and extremely capable vocal abilities. The somewhat dated, though charming and appropriate arrangements are by Roger Kellaway. Most are reminiscent of Simon and Garfunkel's "Scarborough Fair," with harpsichord twanging in the background, but some are completely original, odd at times, and always unpredictable. Songs of note are the reflective "At the Crossroads," the tender "When I Look In Your Eyes," the naively fun "My Friend the Doctor," and the extremely fine performance of "After Today." Also included are the two songs which I had heard previously and which were my impetus for purchasing this recording in the first place "Beautiful Things" and, of course, "Talk to the Animals."

This recording is a must have for any Bobby Darin fan. It shows a side of his abilities rarely heard nowadays. He was a great balladeer in league with the likes of Sinatra and out-shined everyone with his interpretations of up-tempos. Order this CD now and pass the news along to your friends. This rare recording of what should have been Bobby Darin classics, but lacked marketing backing from Atlantic, is available again and sounds better than ever.

4 out of 5 stars because the recording only lasts 39 minutes and should have been coupled with another out of press recording as the label has done in the past with 4 other records.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A Tour de Force.......2006-05-17

This is simply a magnificent performance. Thankfully the complete recording has finally been reissued. As the leading interpreter of the Newley-Bricusse songbook, you would naturally expect Sammy to be 'all over' this work...and he is. Yet, in LeBron James-type fashion, he somehow manages to exceed your expectations when you least think its possible. Here, Sam has embedded himself in the character of this great work by composer Leslie Bricusse, covering songs introduced in the film by Rex Harrison, Tony Newley, Samantha Eggar and the others with varied and resonating aplomb. I've listened to it several times and the musicianship continues to amaze.

Equally accomplished are the charts of Hall-of-Fame arranger Marty Paich, who at the end of the closing tune to this album, 'Talk to the Animals,' takes us home with a witty musical reference to one of Bricusse's contemporary British composers, Tony Hatch, the writer and producer behind singer Petula Clark's hits. Sammy, of course, maybe with one of his appearances on "Hullabaloo" in mind, is hip to the musical reference, and the two proceed to exit musically with a tip of the cap to Mr. Hatch. Hip stuff indeed. Pet Clark must have smiled at that ending.

The CD liner notes are by composer Leslie Bricusse. He goes into some depth concerning the gratitude he and composing partner Tony Newley had for Sammy championing their music over the years. He mentions that Sammy was the first person he actually played the Dolittle score for while he was staying at the home of Sam during one of his visits to the States in 1966. Upon hearing it, Sammy told him he liked it so much he promised to record it. And boy did he! Sammy's New York hometown protege Bobby Darin must have also been quite impressed, because he later recorded his own version of Dolittle with the help of arranger Roger Kellaway. Darin's is a nice set too, but this one by Sammy is definitive.
