OhmygodtheBackstreetBoysrule!!!!!! OK, with that out of the way, let's review The Hits--Chapter One, which is one-stop shopping for the hunky pop group's three American albums--their 1997 self-titled debut, 1999's Millennium, and 2000's Black & Blue. The first disc really shines with "As Long as You Love Me," "Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)," and "All I Have to Give," capturing the Backstreet Boys' essence: sunny pop under the influence of blue-eyed soul. "I Want It That Way," from the second album, is an undeniable classic, while "The Call" has a deliciously frenzied sexual urgency and a strong, danceable beat. But the other tracks are uneven with the oddball fan-appreciation anthem "Larger Than Life" surrounded by somber, predictable ballads. The new single, "Drowning," is same-old same-old: lazy moaning over a drum machine. The Hits--Chapter One might be an optimistic name for this '90s retrospective. The future is cloudy for chapter two. --Courtney Kemp

4 out of 5 stars good greatest hits collection.......2007-07-23

Backstreet Boys was one of the few "boy bands" that I enjoyed during the 90s. I enjoyed their ballads the best. This is a good collection of their greatest hits.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT.......2007-05-06

BSB RULES!!!!!!! I LOVED NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK (STILL DO). BSB PICKED UP WHERE THEY LEFT OFF. ALL THE SONGS ON THIS CD WERE A HUGE HIT. HOWEVER, THE SONG THAT GOT THEM "STARTED" "WEVE GOT IT GOING ON" ISNT ON HERE. SOMETIMES GREATEST HITS ALBUMS TEND TO LEAVE OUT A HIT OR 2. I USED TO HAVE BSB PAJAMAS AND EVERYONE MADE FUN OF ME. OH WELL JUST GET THE CD. GREAT FOR PARTIES.

5 out of 5 stars The Hits Chapter One.......2007-01-11

Nicely selected tunes for this greatest hits CD by Backstreet boys.

5 out of 5 stars This really Brings Back Memories.......2006-11-23

I am so glad I got this CD, it has many of the old songs from the early days of Backstreet Boys, plus a song called "Drowning" which is a really good song. I happen to like all the songs on this CD. Keep an eye out for the Backstreet Boys' newest CD coming out this spring... and remember: KTBSPA or Keep The Backstreet Pride Alive, as they say in other reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Pump it Up!!.......2006-09-19

This CD rocks! Great for working out, listening around the house or pumping it up on the dancefloor! You'll love it!

Album Description

This album represents the merging together of three musical parts of the Lord's ministering body; The 2nd Chapter of Acts, Phil Keaggy, and "A Band Called David." During the summer of 1977 the Lord used the combined gifts of these ministries to help unite His body in eighteen cities in the Western U.S.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Concert Recording.......2007-03-30

This is the second of three live recordings 2nd Chapter of Acts did. The first was a two album set with Barry McGuire taking 2/3 of the concert. The third was with Michael and Stormie Omartian, with 2nd Chapter having 2/3 of the concert. This one has 2nd Chapter of Acts and Phil Keaggy splitting it 50/50.

2nd Chapter opens up with the first four songs. For those who don't know, Phil Keaggy played guitar on the second studio project of 2nd Chapter of Acts. Phil's solo on "Hey Whatcha Say" is awesome. Phil then does the middle portion, with 2nd Chapter of Acts coming back and finishing the project.

When this was recorded, both groups had two albums out. Phil did "Another Try" from his third album (a version different and better than the studio version), and Annie Herring did a pair of songs from her first solo album ("Dance With You" and "Grinding Stone"). Original songs to this project included Phil Keaggy's "My Life", the Matthew Ward solo "Psalm 61", and Annie's solo "Receive".

5 out of 5 stars Better than I remembered.......2006-07-03

I wore out 2 copies of the cassette version of these albums when I was in high school and it had been YEARS since I'd heard it, but the music was definitely better than I remembered. I wish I could say that of all of my childhood memories. :) Guitar and vocals are superb and timeless. Great trip down memory lane!

4 out of 5 stars A good celebration of Christian music nostalgia.......2005-07-31

When I first asked Jesus to be my Lord and personal savior in my undergraduate school in late 1976, my best friends introduced me to Phil Keaggy, the Second Chapter of Acts and other contemporary Christian music. My spirit was filled with joy as I listened to Matthew Ward, Anne Herring and Nelly Grieson in harmony. "Easter Song" has become a standard. I have fond memories of Phil Keaggy and his band performing "What A Day". Yes, the Christians in the Western part of USA (that is, west of the Rockies) were one in the Spirit and one in the Lord, and I definitely recommend this 2-record set to anybody who is interested in contemporary Christian music during its heyday.

5 out of 5 stars A favorite live album.......2003-08-09

This is one of the best concert packages ever. Excitement, warmth, power -- it's all here. Keaggy and A Band Called David get progressive on "Rejoice" and even on "Time." The best rendition of "Love Broke Thru" and Matthew Ward at his finest!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Jesus music by some of the pioneers of the genre.......2003-07-04

For music that is over a quarter century old, this album stands the test of time. My particular favorites are the Keaggy numbers, most of which are live versions of song off his first two albums. The musicianship on this album can hold its own against any music of its period, and blows away much of what is forced onto the public now. If you want to hear authentic Jesus music, when the artists were more concerned about the message than the money, give this a listen. You'll not be disappointed. Favorit song is Keaggy's 'Time', blues/rock ala Cream.

Les Nubians have carved out a name for themselves as the sexy soul sisters with a thirst for jazz grooves and hip-hop beats. But the Faussart girls are switching gears on their third album, creating a 21-track aural excursion filled with rich array of guest poets reading, rapping and slamming in English and French. The verbosity means there is less focus on Helene and Celia's beautiful Afro-pean voices and harmonies, not to mention their bumpin' grooves, but the poets¹ stories are vivid. Tracks like "Fire" and "NYC" highlight the new sound, while songs like "Rendez-vous New York" and the French language "Les Entrailes du Monde" are a musical reveries equal to past glories. Echos isn't really follow up to the two previous albums. It's more of a response to HBO' s Mos Def-hosted Def Poetry Jam and the countless other poets out there performing. Here it's simply channeled through the unique and musical aesthetic of the French-Cameroonian sisters. --Tad Hendrickson

Album Description

The singing sisters and "modern day Nubian griots" of LES NUBIANS, Helene and Celia Faussart, have returned from yet another fantastic voyage, and have many poetic tales to share on their new album LES NUBIANS PRESENTS: ECHOS-CHAPTER ONE-NUBIAN VOYAGER. A musical expedition of poetry and song featuring 4 new Les Nubians tracks, the conception of this album came to Helene Faussart on a memorable Feluqua boat trip while traveling with her sister Celia in Aswan, Nubia in 2000. This chic, multi-part album showcases Les Nubians' lifelong affinity for poetry, be it their own words, or those of other poets they have met along their many tours and travels since 1999, mingled with sultry Afro-soul and hip hop grooves. They have also included three new tracks- "I Disagree," "Rendez-vous New York" (a duet with John Banzai) and 'Solide'.

Recorded in NY, Paris, Bordeaux, London, Marseilles and San Francisco, Echos is divided into four parts: La Terre/The Motherland, Dans Le Ville/Urban City Life, Des Hommes et Des Femmes/Love Stories, and Les Elements/Spiritual Human Nature. Each chapter is introduced by Les Nubians and features an array of gifted French, African and American word craftsmen, such as Souleymane Diamanka, Queen GodIs, John Banzaï & C.Lia, Jamarhl Crawford and Nazeelah Jameson.

Their previous two acclaimed albums charted impressively in the Billboard Top 200, each respectively the highest debut for a French language album in the past 20 years.

5 out of 5 stars A Spoken Word Triumph!.......2005-11-05

Les Nubians took a chance and stepped out into a new realm by spotlighting some of best spoken word artists on this continent and abroad, and I am loving it! The album still has that Les Nubians feel, but it is now more textured with the addition of this beautiful poetry. Every song on it is strong and evokes a feeling of being right there in the moment. It is jazzy, thoughtful, soulful, continental, and just downright fly!

5 out of 5 stars Ecouter.......2005-10-28

I purchased Les nubians cd entitled "Princess Nubiennes" after I saw the video for Makeda and have continued to follow their releases including "Echos." Les Nubians Presents "Echos" Includes music in french and english as well as poetry in english and french. If you do not speak or understand french this cd will make you want to learn the language. The spoken word artists and the music behind their poetry will make you feel at peace as you listen to the nature type instruments and sound effects in the back ground. This is a sit back and relax cd. At times the cd includes Manifestos such as the Track "heaven" and spoken word pieces in which queen godIs Shouts "Fire!" and "Freeeedommm" as she discusses issues of slavery, progress, "blackness," and her lyrical prowess's. Les Nubians also presents a live version of "Demain" Ca veut dire "Tommorow" and Embrasse- Moi (which you may be able to infer.) de le premier CD "Princess Nubienne" cd. This cd is a reflection of creative energy from across the globe, from Ny, France et Afrique that creates a cd laced with beauty and art for your listening and cognitive pleasures. Acheter maitenant!

4 out of 5 stars Spoken Word and Grooves.......2005-10-05

if you enjoy poetry/spoken word with grooves, then this is the cd for you. i thought this was another Les Nubians cd (i love them)but was i surprised. The sisters, did a great job of bringing together some very talented poets/artist from around the world. dont worry that some of the artist speak French, a couple translate the words into English. this is one of those cd's that you put in and just chill to.

my favorites on the cd are:
Freedom-Live Version (Queen GodIs)
To the Queen -(Jamarhl Crawford)
Untitled Rhapsody - Live version (Nazeelah Jameson)
I disagree -(Les Nubians)
Embrasse moi - Deep mix (Les Nubians)
Fire - (Queen GodIs)

to be honest...to me the whole cd is fiyah!!! i dont know a lick of French but i still got my groove on! trust me, you will like the cd!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Awesome Album.......2007-02-28

I'm no more a fan of TVT cashing in on Sevendust's success then the next person, but that's no reason to rate this poorly. It is an amazing album, with some of Sevendust's best songs (in my opinion). Give the credit where it's due. Sevendust is an amazing band, so if you're just getting into them (as I was when I bought it) or want to good collection of songs, buy this, not because it's a TVT promotion, but because it's good music.

2 out of 5 stars principle, not music.......2006-07-20

First off, let me say that I am a big fan of Sevendust and the majority of the material found here is great. But the problem is, the music isn't the point of this release. The reason for this disc is greed. Recently TVT records and the band have, as you doubtlessly already know, parted ways. And it wasn't on what one would call, friendly terms. As such, the former felt it appropriate to milk the Sevendust cow to the point of death with this release. And even that wouldn't be so bad if they hadn't so clearly only chosen songs that were played on the radio (there's a difference between a "Greatest Hits" and a "Best of" compilation), though, admittedly, the songs here are good. And of course, to sucker consumers like me into purchasing this utterly unnecessary collection, TVT has included the token "bonus tracks." Okay, I'll be the first to admit that these songs are good, with the exception of "Coward" which sounds a little too much like another song from "Seasons" and showcases lyrics that are, to put it politely, pretty stupid. On the other hand, "Rain" is arguably the high point of the extra material, though the two covers nicely display the band's more eclectic yet distinctive side. But with only four "new" songs, it is hardly worth the time. If TVT really understood their demographic, they could have used more. Where are "Fall" and "Corrected"? Where is "Number One (The Ballad)"? Or how about their underrated cover "Goin' Back to Cali"? Or the superb "Leech"? Perhaps if TVT had opted to issue a b-sides and rarities collection instead of this, my rating (and opinion of them in general) would be slightly higher. Unfortunately, that is not the case. What we are left with is a sensation of unpleasant familiarity provided by corporate heads with an itch for more cash. In this sense, one can say that I'm not rating the music, but rather the principle behind this release. And by all means I am. Because, as I said before, the music is not the focus here; the money is.

5 out of 5 stars Reminded me just how much I love the intensity and raw power that is Sevendust.......2006-01-25

The Good
This compilation is arraigned chronologically from the group's debut self-titled album to their last studio release Seasons. The thunderous riffs and driving digital effects of "Black" is what introduced Sevendust to the rock lexicon. From there it was full speed ahead. "Bitch" switches things up with a mix of clean arpeggios mixed with balls-to-the-wall riffage. "Denial" displays Sevendust's transition into a more melodic sound. The group still manages to keep it heavy on "Assdrop." Lajon Witherspoon's vocal ability shines as he abandons the shouting for calming, pleasing, and melodic tones on the touching ballad "Angel's Son."

Don't mistake Sevendust's one ballad for them going soft on you. "Praise" hits you right in the teeth with plenty of punch, and a catchy, anthemic chorus. "Enemy" is the best representation of the group today. It's a perfect blend of their early intensity and their current melodic flair. There are 12 hits in all, and four bonus tracks. "Coward" and "Rain" are B-sides from Seasons, and their Marvin Gaye cover of "Inner City Blues" is from a bonus DVD that was included with that release. "School's Out" is a B-side track from a promo for the first Sevendust album.

The Bad
This CD is clearly TVT's was of cashing in on Sevendust's past success and probably part of letting them out of their contract. I guess the biggest slap in the face is that this collection was released while Sevendust is trying to push their latest album Next. Looking through the booklet it's evident that the band didn't have much to do with this release, and it must suck for them that TVT owns all the rights to their hits. "School's Out" is too different from the original for me. Its signature Sevendust, but the chord rearrangements distances it from the original.

The Verdict
Listening to this collection reminded me just how much I love the intensity and raw power that is Sevendust.

1 out of 5 stars It's not because the CD actually sucks, it's because people are boycotting TVT!.......2006-01-25

alright, if it was winedark releasing this cd, i'd probably give it a 4. but i would have waited until the ten, maybe fifteen-year mark before putting out a greatest hits record. when i first saw the cd, i was actually pissed off at the band, thinking "why the hell would they do this? so early in their careers?!" then i saw the giant f*cking TVT logo on the back. i put it back on the shelf and downloaded the bonus tracks off kazaa in a matter of minutes. simple as that.

F*CK TVT, don't buy this cd, pirate the bonus stuff just to p*ss them off, and pray every night that TVT president steve gottleib goes bankrupt (he already had to sell off the rights to Pretty Hate Machine by nine inch nails). or maybe trent reznor, vince hornsby and sony mayo will take turns --the rest of this sentence is in violation of Amazon.com's review policy--.

wow. where did THAT last line come from?

5 out of 5 stars Why do people say this cd sucks?!.......2006-01-18

I honestly think is a good cd (...). Sure, shame on TVT for not consulting Sevendust, but get over it, business is business people. Sevendust is going to my area and I want to let people listen to songs the might have heard before. This album gives out plenty of those songs that people reconize. Especially "Praise", that song alone is worth the price of the album. And hey, look at that, they even give the Praise music video which is also awesome. I like this cd because it has good songs. Don't judge it on whether Sevendust makes money on this or not because I'm sure Sevendust has plenty of money as it is.

With her full-throated alto and her world-weary tone, newcomer Syleena Johnson conjures up the sort of dyed-in-the-wool, down-home soul that used to be par for the course. She comes by that soul genetically: Her dad is R&B legend Syl Johnson but his baby girl is no retro act. Her been-done-wrong anthems, told as a chapter from a young woman's life, have the sassy attitude of today but are seasoned by a womanliness that is often AWOL from the more hip kid-driven R&B. Working with labelmates R. Kelly and Liberty City, Syleena has made a soulful CD that feels real and sounds lived through. --Amy Linden

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Voice.......2006-01-06

That wonderful Alto voice that sometimes reminds me of Angela Bofill and a soulful rasp that reminds me of Billie Holiday. The album is solid but I really wish that she would get better material because the voice deserves better.
The important thing is that she can sang. One of those Church singers but with lots of control.
If you miss real singers, then you gonna like this.

This woman has an amazing voice. Her reaspy alto..she can sing to ma all day and i still wouldn't get tired of listening. This is an album which is average. Her voice is on point but some of the songs are mediocre. The songs..

I Am Your Woman (first video i remember when i first saw her on Midnight Love..i though she could sang...influenced me to buy the album)

Hit On Me (Second video i've seen. This is when i went to buy the album. The message and words are powerful and she sings it with such force. One of the best songs on this CD)

Everybody Wants Something, He's Gonna Do You In, and You Said other good songs...average album but her voice makes up for it...

Sylenna has a very powerful voice for her age. She is way ahead of her time. I truly appreciate Syleena's diversity and I pray that she gets more airplay because she is definatley underrated.

Syleena Johnson's album is a mix of neo soul, R&B,rock, and comtemporary gospel all in one album. Syleena's raspy voice and high and low range will leave you spellbound. This is the album that every music loving, free soul should have.

Chp.1 Love,Pain and Forgiveness gives you what you are looking for in a great album. With tear jerking tracks such as "Hit on Me", and "One Day", you'll be holding back all of your emotions. Then there are tracks like "I Am Your Woman", and "You Got Me Spinnin'", that should empower every woman out there.

With songs produced by R.Kelly and lots of other notable artists, this album is the best comtemporary R&B album I'ved heard in a long time.

5 out of 5 stars Queen of old school R&B.......2003-10-11

Syleena is one of those singers that's hard to ignore once you hear her amazingly soulfull voice. This artist is definitely going to be around for a long time. Good luck to you Syleena you have a new fan.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Dub for the "Coffee Generation".......2005-07-29

This is another one of those discs that remind me of Miles' "On The Corner". I envision Bill Laswell walking around NYC/Brooklyn with this music playing in his head. As someone familiar with the original versions, it's hard not to see his fingerprints all over these tracks. Their essence is not lost, yet they're a little more what? Post-modern (whatever that means)? Urgent? Urban? Well, a little more Laswell.

5 out of 5 stars laswell+ old school= classic dub, psychonavigated.......2005-05-30

for fans of the original music here dont be afraid these are not complete reworkings of these songs but a mer glimpse into what the future of recording has provided. Their is no bass playing of laswell or added members to the session, just laswells beautifle filtering echoeing and blipps ocassinally from time to time some more strong in others some almost unnoticable to those unfamiliar to the original. The songs sceem to go almost in order from oldest to newest or so as it sceems. Chapter 1 definetelly sceems to be older and deffinetelly has less of laswell's digital tough. The recording also are still verry original sounding verry raw but remastered as best as they can at turtle tone. In saying that i do prefer chapter 2 to 1 the songs are better flowed better technology more effects and more integrated style. And song 11 sounds ecatelly like laswell is playing bass. 14 on chapter 2 will also blow your mind. Their are also a lot more dub vocal bits, while chapter 2 is vurtually vocal less. i cant help it i enjoy what technology has brought us in the now, everything is so much clearer and digital effects and sound such as keyborads have become 100% more efficient and reliable. but i do always respect what the past has brought us but i dont live in the past i learn from it and strive foreward. dont be afraid of the future.
For a tiny island of three million people Jamaica has had a thoroughly disproportionate effect on the course of popular music around the world; dub, re-mixes, electronic effects and especially notable nowadays-rap music all began in Jamaica... (Chris Blackwell's introduction to Reggae Explosion: The Story of Jamaican Music)

Born out of the need to create a B side without doing more recording, dub arrived as version, effects added, vocals removed and delayed with bass and drums pushed hard to the front. The birth of an alien music, where the distinction between played instruments and sound effects collapse in a stream of sonic matter... the evolution continues, transported from the mighty Trojan catalog and re channeled by producer/musician Bill Laswell. TROJAN: DUB MASSIVE (CHAPTERS ONE and TWO) take on new dimensions in sound, mythic personages abound, with electronic effects pushed to the limit, detonated rhythms exploding into vapor space, haunted bass lines pulsing and swelling to the point of spilling out over the music, detailed layers of malfunctioning circuits flicker in waves of relentless attack, all elements fused and coiled for ascension, leaving the earth without leaving the roots... Ritual-Audio Culture... An African sci-fi myth-system, the soundtrack for interplanetary escape, postindustrial design at it's most dangerous. it's clearly Bill Laswell's presence that gives this project it's obvious differences- the size, the detail, the pure sonic impact of the sound-scape. A pioneer of re-mix culture and veteran of over seven hundred recording projects. he has been closely connected to the world of dub simulations from his beginning, creating his own dub sampling CD in the nineties (Sound Virus- Dub Tactic Manual). He has shared a close working relationship with Jamaican rhythm engine -Sly and Robbie for twenty years. he's created Yellowman's `Strong Me Strong', the first bass heavy Jamaican track to fully incorporate current (1983) studio technology and made Dub Meltdown with Root's Radic's drummer Style Scott for Brooklyn's Word Sound Imprint. He has worked with Chris Blackwell (Island, Bob Marley, U2) since the early eighties, together they created the AXIOM imprint through Island records in 1989.

Bill Laswell- the first and so far on the only producer/re-director to take on full length album reconstructions by major artist on major labels... MILES DAVIS: PANTHALASSA, BOB MARLEY: DREAMS OF FREEDOM, CARLOS SANTANNA: DIVINE LIGHT, with incoming-Sony classical mix-translation and HERBIE HANCOCK: TECHNOVOODUASTRAL BLACK SIMULATIONS. Endless re mixes and re-constructions have been realized, many baring the mark of dub. TROJAN DUB MASSIVE is an other worldly music, full of mystery and tension, surprise, dark and light, futuristic technologies/tribal culture, the ultimate science fiction soundtrack.

In fact science fiction as already recognized and incorporated dub's dark sensibility... example - ... As they worked, case gradually became aware of the music that pulsed constantly through the cluster. it was called dub, a sensuous mosaic cooked from the vast libraries of digitized pop; It was worship, Molly said and a sense of community.... (Neuromancer by William Gibson)

When the lost tribes gathered on the hilltop, where knowledge is born, they found others like them who had already heeded the call. It was the trembling of the ground that brought them all there, and entering upon the source, they bathed in the glory of the mighty sound...(The Book of Dub Chapter 2, verse 30-32).

5 out of 5 stars Salute 4Him - decade dedicated to His excellence.......2006-04-17

I am so thankful for the gifts of those 4 guys. They have been consistent in their music, message, sensitivity and standard - that is, taken the Word of God to their heart and given it back out to us, in song. It shows in the decade of hits: that they have constantly been reaching the center of hearts - of the mark. Their interpretation, despite the changing scenes and genres, remained true, inspiring, original, fresh and fervent.

I was most dismayed at learning of the parting of ways, though I am aware that things are 'but for a season'; and of a need for growth and development. My one regret is that I did not see them live in concert - or meet them. (Even now, I am scrambling to see whether there's a chance to see them in final concert, at a venue close enough to the Caribbean). I really hope also that I can get the opportunity to purchase some videos of them 'in concert' - with snippets of interviews, background information etc - in time.

This album, a compilation of some hits, is no less an indication of the great repository of talent with which God blessed them. I have several favourites - and some lines or 'hooks' are just simply unforgettable; some rhythms and harmonies absolutely stunning. Their voices are such a powerful blend it is unbelievable. I sometimes wondered where one began and another ended. But even so, I was not surprised when, on visiting the website, I saw a menu indicating who sings lead on the songs! It seemed that many other fans may felt the same way and were asking, so the answers had to be supplied. I am not sure if we will see a combination or the likes of such sounds right now.

When I recently heard in particular 'The Only Thing I Need' for the first time, I could only stop what I was doing and with arms outstretched just raise my face to the sky, tears in my eyes and heart, letting the words and music wash over me. That song is praise and worship, surrender, in action; and one that will drive one to one's knees - every time. It was overwhelming.... this fullness, richness, presence and greatness of God in the song.

Together, as a cord, they were powerful. (It grieves me so to speak of them in the past tense....!) But their work will stand the test of time. Individually, I trust that with their different or separate paths, God will continue to take each further and work 'new works' in them. I am hopeful and intrigued to learn when or where "Chapter Two...." will occur.

Truly, an exx-cel-lent album.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Praise and Worship.......2005-07-25

My favorite track is number 9 - "Before the River Came"!! Whoo!! I love this song and I want you to experience what I have while listening to this song. This song represents the cry of every Christian...especially if we want to be pure and holy.

I tell you...its something, because when I first bought the CD, it was hard for me to get with. Until one day, I popped it into the CD player and I fell in love with the style, rythm and LYRICS of EVERY song. I really recommend that every believer purchase this CD. I thought that it wasnt my style of praise and worship...but, I thought wrong. These songs give you something to relate to. Track 4 encourages the youth and young people to stand firm on the Word of God because they are the examples to younger and future generations. The youth need to be encouraged; therefore, this album is suitable for the young and young at heart!! I get excited talking about it. Purchase this album and let the Lord use you mightily!!

5 out of 5 stars ***** I can't get enough of it . . . *****.......2005-06-17

I had always heard of 4Him, but thought that they were really "praise and worship" and didn't bother looking into them as I never liked that sort of music and was satisfied with "pop/contemporary" type stuff. But after I heard Measure of a Man on our Christian Radio Station one morning, I found it to be the best song that I have ever heard! I immediately checked out their music and fell in love with it! I listened to samples of the songs from "Best Ones" and this CD and soon after, purchased both online! They are now my absolute favorite Christian group ever, and I can't stop listening to them! Here are my favorites from this CD . . . For Future Generations, Sacred Highway, Can't Get Past The Evidence, Measure Of A Man, Before The River Came, Where There Is Faith, A Man You Would Write About, Land of Mercy

The lyrics are absolutely amazing - they are so different from other artists that have the same ideas and SAME lyrics! I can't get enough of Measure of a Man and A Man You Would Write About is just such a wonderful song! I never heard anything like this and am definitely sure I never will! Andy Chrisman, Mark Harris, Kirk Sullivan, and Marty Magehee combined 4 talents that couldn't be matched even by a million artists! The group wouldn't be the same if it wasn't for Andy Chrisman's absolutely phenomenal vocals . . . not to mention some of the lyrics by Mark Harris or some excellent song sung by Kirk, Marty, AND Mark! The group was so extremely creative with their music and their way of spreading God's word and love! So, you should definitely get this CD, but I do like "Best Ones" a bit more than this one. You should actually get BOTH as I did, but I would say to get "Best Ones" first if you're looking for their BEST CD! You won't be disappointed if you get either because they're both just wonderful - hope this all helps and thanks for taking the time to read my review!

Also, please visit: www.friendsof4him.net and www.heismyvision.net . . .they're both excellent 4Him fan sites!

Tim Goldsworthy and James Murphy of the DFA have spent the early part of the '00s putting themselves at the forefront of underground dance, with crack production work on records by LCD Soundsystem, the Rapture, and Primal Scream. This second chapter in their Remixes series will do nothing to stop that momentum. Their version of Nine Inch Nails's "The Hand That Feeds" alone--funky, hypnotic, and way more interesting than the original song (off 2005's With Teeth)--should lengthen the line of artists waiting to work with them. Goldsworthy and Murphy aren't in a rush here, stretching eight songs out to a 71-minute-plus running time. The relaxed approach gives them leverage to build slow and steadily kick up; Tiga's "Far From Home," for instance, turns the song's driving vocal into the main rhythmic component, fattening it until a keyboard pulse comes over the top in a lovely washout of sound. Hot Chip's "Colours" lulls us with a steady bass pulse only to explode with a bright and skittery piece of fuzzed-out electro, while Goldfrapp's "Slide In," extremely groovy already, gets even tastier as a battery of sound effects and chunky thumps dissolve into a pensive melody. It's intricate but effortlessly fun, required listening for anyone wishing to sample the best of what electronic music has to offer at this particular moment in the genre's history. --Matthew Cooke

Album Description

The DFA (Tim Goldsworthy & James Murphy) return with the first installment of their remix compendium. It is comprised of some of the many remixes that helped establish them as one of the most innovative and unique (and in demand) production teams in the world - Yes it has been well documented that Janet Jackson and Britney and a whole bunch of others called, but the duo have resolutely resisted and cherry picked their productions, mixes and collaborations helping retain their relevance, influence and dominance in the ever changing world of contemporary music. Death From Above have been labeled 'The new Neptunes' but there's much more to it than that, and here is the musical proof; In Chapter One; you can witness the DFA sound with fine aplomb, with their highly sought after interpolations of Le Tigre, Blues Explosion, The Chemical Brothers, Soulwax, Radio 4, Fischerspooner, Gorillaz, Metro Area and their recent remix of US label mates Hot Chip - many of which are out of print or unavailable at all on vinyl or CD. EMI. 2006.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The good mix.......2006-06-11

The DFA is one of the most sought after production teams. I have been into their stuff for quite a while. I have been playing these tracks for many years. I sometimes moonlight as a DJ. Any of these tracks always go down well. Even more exciting is LCD Soundsystem. That was my favorite record of last year. I am not a big fan of Le Tigre, but this remix of "Deceptacon" is great. Other things by Blues Explosion and Soulwax are interesting choices. Shows a little range. The Chemical Brothers and Fischerspooner are some of my favorite groups. Their remix of "Emerge" is very tight. Of course I have the 12-inch. Most of these tracks are long. The most well known track here is "Dare" by Gorillaz. There is also a bit by the new group Hot Chip. Excellent stuff.

4 out of 5 stars D-efinitely F-unky A-ssault.......2006-05-03

Chubby James Murphy and his geeky DFA partner Tim Goldsworthy might not be the most photogenic pair to emerge from New York's chic music scene in the last five years, but their cracking abilities in the production and remix stakes has marked them out as zeitgeist conquerors. Want proof that their skills extend further than signing weirdo noiseniks Black Dice and releasing LCD Soundsystem's catchy self-titled debut? Look no further than The DFA Remixes - Chapter One - a thrilling 74-minute ride through some of the DFA team's finest remixes for big name acts from across the globe. Blues Explosion's Mars, Arizona is rid of overbearing guitar doodles and made into stomping dancefloor wonders, Le Tigre are filled with lusty beats for Deceptacon and Soulwax's divergent electro instrumental thrill of Another Excuse. Gorillaz are stretched to more than 10 minutes on the spacey sounds of Dare, Chemical Brothers are given a strong dose of chilled out funk on The Boxer and Fischerspooner's Emerge is initially trimmed of all fat for maximum effect when the synths finally kick in.
One minor quibble is that many of these tracks have been widely available on previous albums (such as Le Tigre's This Island - Remixes and Soulwax's Nite Versions) rather than being exclusives, although for a rounded overview of the Jim and Tim show, this is an upbeat treat.
Unfortunately DFA's work for Unkle, Nine Inch Nails and Goldfrapp doesn't make an appearance on this nine-song collection, but perhaps that's in the vaults awaiting Chapter Two.
I'm already looking forward to it.

5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2006-04-29

Having loved LCD Soundsystem, and every album the DFA's produced, I was very interested in picking in this up, and I'm glad I did. The Le Tigre track is the perfect opener, being a great energetic tune (love that bassline). The Blues Explosion starts off great, and gets progressively wacked out, which is good, as the Blues Explosion aren't known for normality. The Chemical Brothers track is turned into a more relaxed buildup, using elements from the original in a very interesting way (as it was very energetic and uptempo). The Soulwax mix is excellent, with a little keyboard riff that reminds me of rain for some reason. The Radio 4 mix somehow manages to sound just like the original, and nothing like it at the same time (The DFA had just produced and album for them, so they probably knew the track better than most). The Fischerspooner is a quick little hit, and then it's out, keeping most of the vocals, and stripping them down. The other reviewer points out that the Gorillaz mix is a bit too long, and in all fairness, the first few listens do seem a bit monotonous. However, like the Prententious mix of Yeah off the LCD Soundsystem, you start to hear more bit and pieces the more you listen to it, which makes the track better. The Metro Alert track is a nice little funky track. Lastly, the Hot Chip both manages to both float and march along, and is it just me or do the vocals sound a lot like Beatle-era Paul McCartney? This is a great album, and best of all, manages to fit cohesively as an album, instead of sounding like a compilation. Apprently, a volume 2 is due out later this year, and there's already a Japanese version collecting both volumes planned (it's listed as not yet available on Amazon). If you like DFA stuff, this will be perfect. If you don't, these guys really know how to make a remix, and you won't be disappointed.

2 out of 5 stars Only for hardcore fans DFA and LCD Sounsystem.......2006-04-23

Super overindulgent, repetitive, boring mixes.
He kills Le Tigre's "Deceptacon" as the opening track and it's all downhill or round and round and round in nowhere land for the rest. Seriously, a 12:13 mix of Gorillaz' "Dare?" These tracks are too long for dance tracks unless you're a seriously crispy raver. I think they have hit the boundary of white boy dance music and gone beyond. Not worth the money no how no way. Buy a track before you buy the cd. All the tracks are trademark LCD Soundsystem beats driven monotonously into the ground

Laswell created "Sacred System Chapter 1: Book Of Entrance" specifically for ROIR, and in this he has been guided by ROIR's continuous interest in the dub and all its studio manifestations.

"Sacred System" once again proves Laswell a radical innovator, as he adds a new chapter - a new direction for dub in the '90s.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bass-heavy Dreamscapes.......2006-12-20

I love anything by Bill Laswell but this is my favorite work of his, and definitely one of my most frequently played albums. This is truly dub, but there are so many other elements going on within this music that it really surpasses explanation or categorization. It's moody and deep, and produces some incredible mindscapes. Even at its most mellow moments it is still fraught with kinetic energy, swirling into multiple climaxes. A combination of electronic music and instrumental music, the bass playing is multi-faceted. It was recorded in such an enhancing and complimentary manner that it showcases Laswell's exceptional talent on the bass guitar. He plays bass like a lead instrument. No other album has ever taken me deeper into such profound mental imagery as this one...I never tire of it.

4 out of 5 stars This is Dub!.......2005-03-31

Clearly Laswell wanted to genuflect at the feet of King Tubby and Lee Perry, and he creates music that is part imitation of them and part extension of what they had done (there is at least a small amount of cross-in electronic sound). If you like King Tubby, you'll like this.

Laswell's secret weapon here is his bass. He drips fluid and funky bass parts the way Charlie Parker used to drip saxophone runs. The bass playing lifts this record up and makes it something at least a little special.

4 out of 5 stars One of Laswell's best.......2002-09-06

The music on this album is a perfect blend of techno beats and Middle Eastern rhythm. You won't find a lot of variation here --- the songs are supposed to put you in a trance, so they are repetitive. Every time I listen to it, I play it over and over for hours; Laswell should have stretched it out to cover the full disc. This is as good as Laswell's RADIOAXIOM and HALLUCINATION ENGINE.

5 out of 5 stars A totally superb Dub album.......2002-01-24

I've got several Laswell dub outings, sometimes he's brilliant, sometimes not, in this case the tunes really rock. One of the most played CDs in my collection.

5 out of 5 stars If this is dub, I love dub.......2000-06-05

Laswell does it yet again. Reggie lovers, dub lovers, music lovers: my advise is that you at least listen to this album and chapter two. 5 stars is just the begining of a discription.

5 out of 5 stars high energy, pulsating.......2004-01-15

I purchased AVB's "Boundaries of Imagination" just recently, and was a big fan of that, so I bought this relatively new release (Sept. 2003) on the blind. I'm very pleased.

"Universal Religion" is a high energy dance floor filler for the serious house/trance/electronica fans, and will have your blood racing and foot tapping, if you're not dancing that is. There aren't a whole lot of vocals, but when they appear, they grab you tight. Track 5, "As the Rush Comes", is absolutely brilliant.

I wouldn't listen to this every day, but when you need high energy, this would be a good choice. For something less intense and more dreamy with tracks you've probably heard before, check out "Boundaries."
