One can make the case that the Beatles, while the most important band of all time, wasn't the most influential. Decades after Black Sabbath laid down the commandments of heavy metal--lyrically, not for the squeamish; musically, dynamic and resolutely heavy--their impact remains improbably undiminished. One needed only to hear the first notes of the eponymous track on their eponymous 1970 debut to know that a new régime had arrived. And while one could (and should!) have mocked them, they would not be stopped. Black Box includes the eight albums recorded between 1970 and 1978 by the founding lineup--Tony Iommi, Bill Ward, Ozzy Osbourne, and Geezer Butler--in one suitably weighty package. Forgoing bonus tracks (aside from an entertaining but brief four-track DVD extra), the box is rounded off with an impressive 80-page booklet. While the foursome was considerably less fearsome by the time they checked out with Never Say Die, more than half of this collection represents heavy metal with a lasting impact. --Steven Stolder

THE GREATEST BAND EVER.......2007-07-26
This is the band that is responsible for heavy metal as we know it . This is the GREATEST band to ever record ! This 8 cd box set is all you will ever need . I have been a huge Sabbath fan since first hearing Master Of Reality back in about 1973 . Here you get 8 amazing cd's with remarkable remastered sound that will blow you away. Since there is really no need to discuss Black Sabbath , Paranoid , Master Of Reality , Volume 4 , Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sabotage , every metal fan knows these cd's as the classic's that they are. There is still 2 more very under rated cd's here . Technical Ecstacy and Never Say Die. Not enough people recognize these cd's , but I truly like both of them . True they are not the classic type Sabbath that the other 6 are . They are still excellent , heavy , hard rockin' albums . Technical Ecstacy has the great Back Street Kids , You Won't Change Me , Gypsy and All Moving Parts . Never Say Die has the great title track along with Shockwave , Juniors Eyes , Hard Road and Over To You . These are 2 cd's that should not be pushed to the side . If you own this box set or plan on buying it , check out these 2 forgotten Sabbath cd's . As usual , with all Rhino box sets this is a first rate effort . The box is beautiful , the book is amazing ,it contains all the lyrics , a great memo and some excellent photos. This is worthy of 10 stars .
the ozzy years .......2007-07-20
wow the box set is the best ever if u dont own any black sabbath cds with ozzy and not sure were to start id say by this althouth this is not all of ozzys work wheres past lives i mean this is all the studio stuff but all in all this is an amazing box the book has a little histiroy photos and a bouns dvd the dvd has four songs on it by this if u are an black sabbath fan u wont regret it
Black Box!.......2007-07-19
Black Sabbath's gotta be one of my favorite bands now. I wanted to get some of their records and the "Black Box" seemed like a good starting point.
Black Sabbath, in my opinion created some of the most brilliant songs, ever! True music enthusiast should at least own their first 4 albums.
For the people thinking the "Black Box" is a rip off, think about it. You get the first 8 Black Sabbath CDs, that's $80+ if you get them individually, (and the ones in the box set are remastered too), and a sexy velvet hardcovered biography of the history of Black Sabbath, all inside a blackend box that could of been crafted by Satan himself, all for around $60. I don't see how this is a rip off...
nice box!.......2007-07-14
here we have it all 8 sabbath records with ozzy fronting, nothing new whats so ever we have all heard these songs before but let me tell you it sounds fresh, remastered you hear little things in the songs you may have missed before. one thing that i would like to clear up is upon purchasing this box set i was reading other reviews and noticed someone stated that the medley tracks mainly on the selt titled album had been seperated into individual tracks, this is not the case they are still medleys. maybe they changed it for different pressings of the box set (highly unlikey) but it matters not this is black sabbath how it was intended.
The greatest black box ever.......2007-06-16
The reason I bought this is because if I ever wanted to experience Black Sabbath then I should just get this and listen to all the albums that Ozzy was on. Boy was I in for a ride! I have listened to the albums from beginning to end and there are key tracks that I had loved on each album but then hearing them along side with the other tracks makes them even more attractive. Like the segue of "Am I Going Insane" with "The Writ" and many others. I absolutely LOVE this box set. The SUEDE book goes through each album and track explaining them which is cool and i watched the dvd and it's very good just makes you wanna trip out and watch.
So if your thinking of getting this then DISH out the money and get it. It's totally worth the price!

Monsoon Wedding is Mychael Danna's second collaboration with film director Mira Nair, (Kama Sutra was the first), and he has again compiled a winning soundtrack. Danna explores a wide range of emotions, from solemn to celebratory, through different generations of Indian culture. The contemplative "Good Indian Girls" and "Hold Me, I'm Falling" feature Danna's trademark piano ambience over traditional Indian instrumentation, and the vivacious "Baraat" sounds like a Punjabi variation on Dixieland, while "Delhi.com" ventures into dreamy ethno-techno territory. Sukhwinder Singh's "Today My Heart Desires" serves up lively bhangra rock, and Laxmikant Pyarelal's "Today the Weather Plays Tricks on Me" (performed by Mohammed Rafi) swoons with strings and male vocals. In all, the soundtrack's pleasing variety of Eastern music mirrors the film's old and new worlds living within a singular culture. --Bryan Reesman

Monsoon Wedding Soundtrack is Terrific.......2007-05-18
I really enjoyed the movie and was pleased to find the soundtrack. Great cd if you're a fan of Bollywood!
Loved it!.......2007-03-24
I just saw the movie MONSOON WEDDING and I absolutely loved it! Of course, I just HAD to have the soundtrack, so I bought the Cd recently and loved it too! WOW!
The Cd will leave you in a happy mood... Wonderful up-beat songs, many are so danceable and hipnotic. I've been playing this Cd all week ...I just wish it were longer because I would love to have more Cds like this in my Cd collection.
Just as fabulous as the movie!.......2007-01-31
This is an excellent soundtrack from an excellent movie. The music is fantastic - makes you want get up and move your feet! It's got such a happy, wistful, exotic flavor throughout the CD. I think this will probably be one that I wear out from listening to it so much!
Love It, Love It, Love It.......2007-01-21
I just love this CD. I'm preferential to the work of Mychael Danna and this is another awesome work of his. There is everything from old Indian love ballads to the popular Bollywood music of today, with some very beautiful instrumentals in between.
I'd recommend seeing the movie too. As well, I'd check out Danna's music for another Mira Nair movie, "Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love."
Culture-Happy-Dance-Reflect-Appreciate-Savor-Relax-Laugh.......2006-11-06
Above I listed some words that first came to mind when I thought about this cd.
It is very Culture rich and soaked in Indian flavor. It's colorful and makes you happy with a laugh or two; as it seeks to portray the traditional music typical of a Punjabi wedding in Delhi, India.
You want to dance with most songs and sit quietly to reflect with others. I listed appreciate because we often don't sit back to appreciate the richness that other cultures provide. My 2 year old appreciates this music in her broken wanna be Hindi mimic.
She dances as does my 6 year old to this music. It's really a great CD but I would recommend seeing the movie first.

Amazon.com essential recording
Queen of Soul trumps all other collections of Aretha's recordings for Atlantic by adding dozens of album tracks to a selection of epochal singles ranging from "I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)" and "Respect" to "Spanish Harlem" and "Rock Steady." Over three CDs and change--the fourth runs out of steam, as did her creative energy during the mid-to-late-'70s period it chronicles--we hear many emotional shifts: impassioned, triumphant, wistful, and always truthful about her condition and our own. --Rickey Wright

"Simply,THE TRUTH!".......2005-06-11
I've had this box set for a while. At times I've listened to each disc on it's own and enjoyed it. Recently, I had to drive a lot over the Memorial Day weekend (to my daughters travel basketball games) and decided that I'd listen to the whole box set, starting at disc one through disc four. The experience was a revelation. Aretha is one of the greatest vocalist ever to record. And when she sings, she simply "tells the truth." When she says she, "Never Loved a Man," "the way that I love you," that's what she means. When she wants a "Do Right Man," because she'll be a "do right woman," that's what she means. You hear it in her voice when she talks about being a "Natural Woman," telling her man to "Think," and saying she wants "R-E-S-P-E-C-T;" you know what she's talking about. And it's not just the classic, old jams she vocalizes the truth on. It could be lesser known gems, such as "Try Matty's," "The House that Jack Built," or "Don't Play that Song." When she says "Rock Steady," I'm up and grooving, rockin' steady. When she says she'll be that "Bridge Over Troubled Water," it's spiritual. And when she sings "Call Me," or "Until You Come Back to Me," the urgency in her voice sends chills through me. My Dad loved Aretha and I grew up listening, but not appreciating Aretha. Once you get to be my age though, all you're looking for is truth and honesty and if you purchase this box set, you will definitely get it! I love this four disc CD set. I recommend it for anybody needing an intro to Aretha's greatness or anybody who needs to hear it TOLD LIKE IT IS!
Queen of Soul: The Atlantic Recordings ~ Aretha Franklin.......2005-03-26
This collection of her atlantic recordings is stupendous and amazing. Franklin is a tremendous artist with mega super hits such as think, respect, and many more. The book-let is very nice with high end photographs of Franklin and the covers of all her albums that she made for atlantic. There is so much to like about her and her amazing ability as a vocalist, muisician, lyricist and performer. The front cover photo is very nice with Franklin mayb e in her 30's or later, I have no idea, but it is a very nice photo and she looks great. Gotta love those tacky sunglasses on her 1975 release you. This is a very nice compilation that one should not miss.
Essential Cornerstone of any Soul collection.......2005-02-10
I know, I know, you narrow your eyes whenever you see the term "essential," in an amazon review. Well, hate to tell you but it doesn't get any more essential than this. This may be the gold standard of Box sets. Better than my Joy Division, my Miles, my Coltrane, and my Sonny Rollins sets. By heaps and piles!
As far as I'm concerned: It's Billie, Nina and Aretha. The Mother, The Daughter and The Holy Spirit of Soul. I love Etta (both Ettas). I love Mahalia, and I love Bessie. I swear by Ruth Brown. Mabel Mercer and Roberta Flack- Love 'em to death. But one gives credit where it's due: at her absolute prime, Aretha sounds, well- PRIMAL. Like her voice has become the avatar of Athena, Artemis and Aphrodite- all rolled into one. The woman's pipes are sooooo grand as to be almost inhuman- yet tempered with such human warmth, tenderness, humility... Her voice does things to me, and unless you're a robot in disguise or one of the walking dead- it will to you too... So. Forget the label, "soul," and all the baggage it carries- just take the word at face value: If you possess a soul- you will love this. This is the kind of music that unites generations- gives all cultures a common ground.
This collection is a couple steps short of being 'comprehensive,' but still pulls off being definitive. It's missing a few tracks that the hardcore fans will kick up a fuss over... Still: 4 CDs. 88 tracks. Excellent sound (most of the earliest songs are preserved in mono: a good thing), the remastering is phenomenal. Great packaging, the 80+ page booklet has interviews with everyone, it's a sweet read. Then there's the smalll fact that you're getting All her Atlantic hits and (probably) the cream of her entire Atlantic output: albums, singles, B-sides, all of it (and that's saying something). I defy you to bat an eye at this.
You'll want this over the Columbia Comp. Some go for the early 60's Aretha, but I feel I can say this without reservation: her individuality blossomed at Atlantic. It was with her move to Atlantic (back when the likes of Jerry Wexler, David Ritz, Dave Marsh and Tommy Dowd were workin it) that she began to earn the apropos moniker, "Queen of Soul." At Columbia, one always feels like she's straining against the pop arrangements. She's trapped, yearning to be set free. The Columbia producers cramped her innate tendency to do what gospel singers do best: let loose. That's just what she does over the course of these four fantastic CDs. Atlantic gave Aretha the license to use her wings. We all get to some along for the ride.
You really don't have a reason not to get this. If you feel that nigh-60 dollars is too much to drop... Well, the BMG people (yeah, the ones that mail out those annoying CD forms that you always forget to fill in and return on time and then you have some crap you never wanted in your maibox to ambush you) usually has a sweet half-off policy for all box-sets. They offer this for about 25 $'s, which is actually about 33$'s, once you add the shipping and tax. Just so's you know.
PS. Jimmy Smith died today. RIP
Near Perfect .......2004-11-10
Of course, I love Aretha Franklin & am very grateful to my buddy who gave me this boxed set as gift. Being the perfectionist I am, I do have some complaints, so please bear with me :
1) Where is "Lean On Me"? This was a non-album B side of "Spanish Harlem". This is not the Bill Withers song, but a Van McCoy compostion. Surely they could have included it. Fortunately I have a turntable & managed to salvage the single out of my collection. FYI - Melba Moore also does a great version of this song which is worth checking out.
2) Disc 4 is a little uneven. Even a great artist like Aretha Franklin put out some less than great music. Her "5 for the DeeJay" is a strange song which for some strange reason creeps me out whenever I hear it. It sounds almost like a parody of her classic style. Sorry, I'm probably overanalyzing things here. As long as they were putting her later stuff on the set, why not include at a couple of numbers from her last 2 albums "Almighty Fire" & "La Diva". I know that the material is supposed to be horrible, but it would have been good just for the shock value. At least, I would have been interested in hearing the Skip Scarborough material which considering the man's other work, couldn't have been that awful!
3) Some of the additions that I suggested could have taken the place of some of the inclusions. Her version of "Somewhere" is nice but not essential to me. Also, I know I'll get into hot water for this one. I know that the duet with Ray Charles must have been wonderous in concert, but for some reason doesn't come off that well on record. Of course, with the recent death of Mr. Charles its inclusion is fitting & proper.
4)I love Gospel music but the inclusion of the one Gospel song sounds somewhat out of place on this collection. It might have been a better idea to put together a Gospel collection, which I think there has been in the last few years. Possibly, her version of Marvin Gaye's "Wholly Holy" might have been a better choice. I know! I know! I'm being very picky!
Okay I better say some things I really enjoy about this collection:
1) The numbers from the Curtis Mayfield produced "Sparkle" are absolute gems & deserve more attention that they have gotten.
2) The beautiful "Without Love" co-written by sister Carolyn is a very moving number which almost brings me to tears.
3) Her "Young Gifted & Black/Spirit in the Dark" Period is very well covered here - including some awesome cover versions such as "Spanish Harlem", "Don't Play that Song", "You're All I Need to Get By" & a stunning version of Elton John's "Border Song" that totally blows away EJ's version. During this time, she was also writing more of her own songs which, again, are stunning - "Call Me", "Daydreaming", "All the King's Horses", etc. I can't remember if she wrote "One Way Ticket", but it is another lost gem!!!
4) Of course, her "Lady Soul" period (the 1st 4 Atlantic albums) is covered well. Some of the lesser heard tracks really stand out like ballads such as "Prove It" & "Baby Baby Baby". Of course, Carolyn Franklin's composition "Ain't No Way" still blows me away every time I hear it. By the way that is Cissy Houston (Whitney's mom) hitting those stratospheric high notes in the background. I have heard DJs incorrectly say that it was Carolyn doing the singing there.
5) The "Soul 69/This Girl's in Love..." period is interesting. Some critics seemed to savage the stuff from "Soul 69" which is actually quite nice. Again, why couldn't they have included her version of "This Girl's in Love..."? Oops! I'm complaining again. Sorry!
So, anyway, for anyone who is still reading this rambling review, I hope I'm forgiven for my criticisms. I do love Aretha! When an artist is as talented as she is, I tend to expect absolute perfection. Anyway, enjoy!
P.S. If you don't have the bucks to lay down for this collection & don't have nice friends who will give you a gift copy, you should check out some of her individual collections like "Aretha Arrives" "Lady Soul" or "Never Loved A Man". Also there are some budget priced collections which include her well-known & lesser known material, and they are the original recordings - not re-recordings!
Forever The Queen!!!.......2004-09-08
Hey Aretha fans
I would like to let everyone know that I LOVE Aretha!!
I have ever since I first borrowed a tape that had her "oldies" on it. It wasn't until I became older that I learned to appreciate her lyrics. This collection is by far the best I have ever had! I listen to it in every possible direction i can. But I love to hit shuffle and wonder what song is gonna be next. This collection has almost everything Aretha did in the 60's and i would love to hear the other songs that aren't on this collection. Which means buying all of her records but hey when u love Aretha as much as I do you don't really care. ha ha
So to all of you that have this collection Congrats! and to those of you THINKING of getting this GO HEAD!
Cause this is the proper way to hear the QUEEN OF SOUL!

Customer Reviews:
A really good buy-Tops!.......2007-07-23
Cool 90's collection! Blackbox hits and remixes...good stuff!! Try it, You'll like it--so to you party lovers, Blackbox is the one you'd enjoy.
Cheers.
Back to the 90's.......2007-01-10
It's good to hear the big voice of Martha Wash in Black Box (never knew who was the girl appeared in the videos, but well... for me it's the voice, not the look the important thing).
All the hits, very good megamix. Over 70 minutes of classic dance music
Italino House at its best.......2005-08-12
I love the thourght of a band that only releases one album also releases a greatest hits CD.
But Black Box was the band that started the whole Italion House and I love it.
If you dont have "Ride on time" In our collection of get this one. but the best Black Box CD I have is still "Right on Time" the origenal 12" Extended Mix
all good.......2005-08-02
showed up on time and black box is hard to find, very happy..thank you charlie.
The only Black Box album you need!.......2005-02-24
I came across this album recently while browsing in the dance/freestyle section of my local record store, and remembering I used to jump up and down on my bed to "Everybody Everybody" when I was 14, immediately bought it. "Hits And Mixes" contains all of Black Box's smash hits from the early 1990s, including "Ride on Time", "I Don't Know Anybody Else", "Strike It Up", "Fantasy" and of course "Everybody Everybody". In addition to all of the tracks from their one (and only) album "Dreamland" (with the exception of the title track, really just a 2-minute instrumental, and therefore not missed), "Hits and Mixes" actually improves on that album by including several remixes, including the 1994 trance remix of "Ride on Time", the popular Le Freak mix of "Everybody Everybody" (joy!), a soulful acid house remix of "Strike It Up", a new club track called "Get Down", and a Megamix medley! Overall, this is probably the most complete and comprehensive Black Box album you can get your hands on at this writing. If you love classic Italian-style House music with strong diva vocals, you will love this album! Put it in your CD player, and in no time, you will be transported back to 1990, and jumping up and down on your bed to the beat! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Customer Reviews:
A good value.......2007-05-17
I wasn't expecting to have 4 discs for this price, and the music is a quality selection of film music, giving a good scope of the genre, and a very listenable transfer.
The Sound Track Since Bernard Hermann.......2006-07-25
This collection is bound to capture your heart and evoke a tin ear on successive tracks. I found much to like and some duds - easy to skip over.
Very good value.
Good mix of film music.......2006-07-02
Good mix of films!
I'm a big fan of this soundtrack music and will be looking for more CD's like this.
A mixed collection of movie music.......2006-02-23
For the price, this CD is a great bargain. The musical selections, as you might expect, are mixed in quality ranging from extraordinary to so so, the balance being worthwhile and interesting. Sonically the CD is excellent.
Uplifts your soul, takes your mind into the heavens.......2006-01-06
I have been listening to great scores for many years and this collection is truly inspirational in so far as the choice of different scores takes you on a journey of listening pleasure matched by only a few collections. The price is incredibly reasonable for hours of listening pleasure. Don't pass this one up

Customer Reviews:
The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09
Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.
Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02
Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.
A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06
John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.
There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.
Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11
Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.
" one of cinema's greatest composers...John Barry".......2001-07-06
This collection of four compact discs...are worth their weight in GOLD! Barry creates visual moods for each film he scores...romantic, sentimental, action, adventure, suspense and mystery...the list could go on. Strings, brass and lush-velvet arrangements overlay each cue in his distinctive style of legendary scoring...we have ~ "John Barry:The Collection", Silva Screen's release traces 40 years of film music, featuring "The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra" ~ conducted by Mr. Nic Raine (outstanding)..."Crouch End Festival Chorus" ~ David Temple, Choir Master...perform 56 selections, over four hours of symphonic suites with a full orchestra sound...all individually wrapped-up into one neat package...just the way "film-score-buffs" like 'em!
Must ask the following to take a bow ~ James Fitzpatrick (compilation producer), always in their pitching, Reynold da Silva (executive producer), Nic Raine (conductor, arranger, orchestrator & associate producer), a tremen!dous asset to every project he undertakes...and the man who made it all possible...a legendary icon always leading the way in film scoring ~ JOHN BARRY!
Total Time: 258:76 on 56 Tracks ~ SSD-1128 ~ (2001)
You might try other albums from Silva Screen, all worthy of a good listen ~ "The Essential James Bond" (SSD-1034)..."Bond:Back In Action" (SSD-1100)..."Bond:Back In Action 2" (SSD-1119)..."Zulu" (SSD-1095)..."Raise The Titanic" (SSD-1102)..."Walkabout" (SSD-1120)...check out my reviews on amazon.com/music.

Customer Reviews:
The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26
I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.
Please buy it.
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Amazon.com essential recording
Sam Cooke had a voice like clover honey, and he was as ingenious a businessman as he was an artist--carefully treading the line between smooth pop and deep R&B to bring both audiences to him, as well as together. Disc 1 of this set compiles his 1957-1959 recordings for the Keen label, which had tamed the former gospel tiger into a sweet, wry songwriter with a taste for crooning standards and a signature yodel that marked every song as his property. The second and third discs do the same for his RCA career's singles and album tracks, which, for all their orchestrated slickness, left an indelible mark on soul and even rock (compare "That's It, I Quit, I'm Movin' On" to Elvis Costello's "Blame It On Cain"!). Lastly, there's a disc with two complete albums from Cooke's stylistic poles: Night Beat (after-hours cool soul) and Live at the Harlem Square Club (Cooke as hard-hollering crowd mover). As a survey of the middle period of Cooke's career, this set is totally solid; be advised, though, that it skips over both his early years shouting gospel with the Soul Stirrers and the classic recordings from the last year or so of his life--which include hits such as "Shake" and "A Change Is Gonna Come" that are still, flabbergastingly, out of print. --Douglas Wolk

The Man Who Invented Soul***Excellent***.......2007-01-16
Wonderful music by the best songer that ever lived, period.
One of a kind Voice(Angelic).......2006-09-12
Sam Cooke is the man. I know that Sam is an original Idol. Marvin Gaye, Johnny Taylor, Otis Redding, Ronald Isley, Smokey Robinson and many more singers idolized Sam Cooke. The man who invented the soft sweet angelic notes. For instance he first created the Whoa a whoa a whoa. And it is so smoothe. Sam is a man that can sing both rough and smoothe. If you put sam against a lot of singers today they would have to go back to pushing grocery carts or pumping gas. Even though Sam loved to sing in the old style like nate king cole he also would sing pop, gospel, rock and blues showing he is versatile. If Sam was living today who would still be an Idol. Sam Cooke the man,the legend.
Sam fought the law(yers) but the law(yers) won.......2005-10-15
A pretty audacious title for this box. Does it deliver? Frankly no: There are certainly some of his best tracks here that showcase both his smooth soaring side and the times when he'd allow a little sandpaper into his voice. But it also fails to give you any idea where that great voice got its seasoning (none of his Specialty era gospel material) and turns away for the most part from the grittier material it seems Cooke would have aimed at had a hotel manager's gun not claimed his life. In addition, the recognition of the wonderful instrument that was Sam's voice should be paired with the knowledge that his material wasn't always worthy of it. (This set would probably be fine as a well-chosen 2 CD set)
What's missing here? His time with the Soul Stirrers, plenty of songs that were Top 40 hits on the pop or R&B chart (#1 R&B I'll Come Running Back to You, R&B Top 10 hits Little Red Rooster (you get a live version instead),Shake, and A Change is Gonna Come, as well as Ain't That Good News, Good Times, Tennessee Waltz, Cousin Of Mine, and It's Got The Whole World Shakin', all of which hit Top 40 on one or both charts. The version of "Another Saturday Night" you get here is an alternate take instead of the 45RPM version. It would also seem essential to get his first bid at mainstream appeal with "Lovable". (He released it under the name Dale Cook to try and avoid offending his gospel fans.) Most of these are missing because of lawyers (read the review by compilation producer Paul Williams for the in-depth explanation).
The last disc is the whole albums of NIGHT BEAT and LIVE AT THE HARLEM SQUARE CLUB. It feels more like a record company cash grab from Cooke connoisseurs than an attempt to be comprehensive. Cherrypicking a few live cuts would be the better route.
Soundwise, I can't argue with the remastering. It all sounds stunning. If you're a mono purist, be advised that stereo mixes were used on this set.
BOTTOM LINE:
Cooke is a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and deserves better than this. Until the lawyers can get in agreement, Cooke will not have a definitive box set. There's a phenomenal 2 CD box set on Cooke waiting to be made. Until then, most Cooke fans will get the best overview on the remastered SACD audio PORTRAIT OF A LEGEND (31 tracks,B00009N1ZV). It distills Cooke's greatness in a single disc and includes nearly everything mentioned as "missing" above.

classic Sam.......2004-11-20
The songs on this set, some of which I have, and most I don't are just another reason why this man deserves the title of legend for truly he was a gifted individual, and even now some 40 years after his passing, the music still brings tears to my eyes, whether it'a the songs done with the Soul Stirrers or Sam as a solo artist.I highly recommend this set.

SAM COOKE created an irresistably, inspiring magical sound of his very own that will influence all pop-rock-soul artists to pay their musical debts to his mesmerizing artistry till the end of time. A collection of great instrumentals.......2006-08-10
Ian Anderson has always been known for his flute. What we have here is a flute player arranging and playing some very innovative flute.
The entire album is instrumental, so we miss out on Anderson's outstanding lyric writing talents.
Ian trades his lyrics in for some of the finest flute music you will ever want to hear.
There is not a bad song on the CD. The highlights for me include, In a Stone Circle, In the Grips of Stronger Stuff, and in defence of Faiths. These 3 compositions are not only outstanding but will stand the test of time, which in my mind is the only true test of music. You will never hear Ian Anderson compose anything more solid. The rest of the CD is basically elevator music with occasional highlights.
Ian plays the flute in his patented style and is in top form.
This is much better than its predecessor Walk into Light.
If you are a Jethro Tull fan this should interest you.
Less Than Divine.......2006-07-28
For the record, I've been a huge fan of Jethro Tull since 1968 and a great admirer of Ian Anderson's recent work, such as "The Secret Language of Birds." Anderson is, in my estimation, one of the more significant composer/musicians of our day, and his post-Jethro Tull work has been quite wonderful.
Having said that, I am disappointed with his Twelve Dances with God. The music is pretty, in a generic way, but it lacks the compositional intricacy that is the hallmark of Anderson's work. There are few, if any, key modulations, which Anderson does so well in other works. The pieces are all instrumental - flute together with orchestral instruments and the occasional keyboard. They are all pleasant, in a "new age" sort of way, but lacking musical substance. Nice background music for the office or at home, perhaps.
My chief disappointment is that all twelve pieces sound monotonously similar. I assumed that the theme of this album is the diversity of expressions as humans attempt to dance with God. Leaving the theological aspects aside (this is, after all, an album of music not a theological text), I would have expected a greater diversity of rhythm and tune. However, each track seems to flow into the next. Perhaps this is reflective of "new age spirituality" where truth and deity are rather elastic, but that would take some elucidation from Ian Anderson himself. The music itself doesn't seem to have much to say. If these are twelve dances with God, perhaps it would be better to let Him take the lead.
completely satisfied..........2004-08-09
I have been a long time Tull fan and consequently, Ian Anderson.
As mentioned in earlier reviews on this page, this is a true gem and a tribute to Ians ability to be musically creative, fluid and expansive in a musical genre distinctly different from his rock and blues roots.
Magical.......2004-05-19
This album holds me in rapt fascination whenever I play it. Each song is Anderson's interpretation of the spirit of one of Earths religions. The 12 songs are unique in their own right, but somehow mesh with each other, like they are all really dancing with the same God. Each time I listen to this work I hear more or feel something different. It is a masterpiece.

Better than your average dance album.......2005-04-18
Dance pop: Usually you get about 2 great hit tracks and a whole bunch of boring filler you never listen to. Not the case with this one. Sure, you'll know the big hits "Everybody Everybody", "I Don't Know Anybody Else" and "Strike it Up", but there's some others worth your time here, too.
HIGHLIGHTS:
"Everybody Everybody" appears in the Top 40 single edit here, along with Martha Wash's orgasmic wailing opening for "I Don't Know Anybody Else". "Fantasy", a 'go after your dreams' number, is surprisingly solid and probably could have been a single. The Brand New Heavies' Loleatta Holloway guests on the sizzling "Ride on Time". The midtempo throb of "Hold On"'s "Co-caine..co-caine...to go straight to your brain" will also embed itself. Final single "Strike it Up" is another good one with Wash tearing it up on vocals and a rap that doesn't sound horribly out of date (unlike, say "Ya Kid K" does these days...)
LOW POINTS:
The title track is a dull instrumental...you'll never really turn to it on purpose. "Open Your Eyes" is also a bit of a snoozer. "Ghost Box" sounds like a Kenny G outtake. It's completely out of place here and I'm not sure what producer "Groove Groove Melody" was thinking other than possibly "Gee..I've only got 8 songs so far. I better put at least ONE more on there or people will think it's a rip-off."
BOTTOM LINE:
Even with the short run time, it's one of the better dance CDs I've heard and I still pull it out from time to time. For a genre with usually little longevity, this one continues to sound pretty good. Recommended.
