Great resource for finding hard to locate songs.......2004-02-20

I am a fan of this series as it often is the only place to find old school classics. Songs that were popular back in the day, but by either one-hit-wonders, or artists with out of print recordings. This CD is the only place I could find "Firestarter" by Tease, and "Sugar Free" by Juicy. I also enjoyed "Who Do You Love" by Bernard Wright and "Come into My Life" by Joyce Sims. This collection is from a day when slow jams were more than just the whining you hear on the radio today. There was rhythm, there was funk, there was soul.

very smooth!!!!.......2003-07-31

A very nice selcetion of songs that are nice there is a song by Eugene Wilde who was popular in the 80's but he didn't get a lot of exposure who is a good singer he has a song on here called don't say no tonight and firestarter, I'm curious, Silver Shadow, Slow down and many other great songs and I would recommend anyone to buy this album I am almost finish with completing the whole collection of smooth grooves but this is a nice cd to add to your romance cds!!!

A fine anthology of the songs that helped define the "Quiet Storm" sound........2003-06-11

Most of the songs included on this great compilation deservedly became Quiet Storm classics. "Firestarter" (Tease), "Gotta Get You Home Tonight" (Eugene Wilde), "Silver Shadow" (Atlantic Starr), "Come Into My Life" (Joyce Sims) and "Sugar Free" (Juicy) still sound great after all these years. I did NOT give these otherwise-superb CD a 5-star rating because the songs by Oddysey and Reel To Real do not belong on a Quiet Storm-oriented anthology. If you are a fan of 1980s R&B, however, you shouldn't pass this CD up. I also like the front and back inserts' photos also.

Essential Smooth Grooves.......2003-03-27

This is without doubt one of the finest in the Smooth Grooves series. A good mix of laid back soul (Juicy, Tease, Keni Burke) and smooth dancers (Bernard Wright, Odyssey, Atlantic Starr). Lots of the tracks here have had a hammering on my soul radio show, and feedback has been excellent. Do yourselves a favour, if you've not purchased this yet, don't waste time putting it on your wants list, get it now.

Amazing Compalation That Takes You Back.......2005-10-18

Smooth Grooves: A Sensual Collection, Vol. 7 is another amazing set of classic slow jams. Volume 7 mainly deals with songs all concering some form of heartbreak. Sukiyaki,Love On A Two Way Street, Tears, Toast To The Fool are all truthfully with heartbreaking harmonies and ever singer is in top form. The song that stands out the most to me to Try Again by Champagin. The song is dire need of a remake by a capable artist like Jon B. or Brian Mcknight. Other stand out tracks include the classic baby maker Love You Down By Ready For The World. So light some candles, burn some inscense and break out the starwberries and go back to a time when love was love.

This is a very nice compilation of slow jams and I really enjoy this cd a lot and I would recommend this cd to anyone who enjoys oold school and who likes Rhythm and Blues. Every song on here is solid and this album brings back a lot of memories and I really do enjoy this album and I would truly recommend this album to any old school and Rhythm and Blues lover this is a really great compilation cd. My favorites are: Dreamboy-Don't Go
Champagne'- Try Again and many great other songs so therefore if you like slow music, old school, and rhythm and blues then I would truly reccommend you to buy this album!!!!

This one has the perfect collection of love songs. I remember Sukiyaki when it was first done in Japanese. They used to play it so frequently on the radio. I thought it was a beautiful song since I didn't know what they were really saying. When Taste Of Honey transalated it back in 1981, I saw it was about a love gone sour. The original singer did not ask for his rights to the translated version even though Taste Of Honey offered it to him. Try Again is also a great song that brings back memories. Yes, the group Champaign is from Champaign, IL.

The title says it all. A good collection of love songs at any price. My favorites on this disc:

For R&B Fans.......2006-11-09

What can I say about this compilation? First this CD has some of the greatest slow jams you will ever find. Chapter 8's I Just Wanna Be Your Girl Featuring Anita Baker, is probably the best song on here. Not to say songs like, If You Play Your Cards Right, Let Me Be Your Angel, Tender Love, What You Won't Do For Love, Come Go With Me, As We Lay and the late great Rick James's Fire & Desire are not great songs. Needless to say if you are a R&B fan you will love this CD.

Nothing But Back To Back Classic.......2006-02-08

Smooth Grooves: A Sensual Collection, Vol. 2 is a follow up to Volume 1, and like Volume 1, the CD is very constient with the classic slow jams, that may young folks were made of. Standout tracks include the classic and often sampled Tender Love. Other standout tracks include What You Won't Do For Love by Bobby Caldwell ,Come Go With Me by Teddy P and the always heartbreaking classics Am I Dreaming by Atlantic Starr and Fire & Desire by Rick James.

I own quite a few from this series.

When you are sitting around the house on a Sunday night and don't want to turn on the television or read a book, this is the apropos solution.

Particularly good are numbers 1, 2, 8 and 12. The difficulty of finding a lot of these songs individually is what makes the CD worth every penny.

This is a great CD not only does it take me back, it helps me to unwind.

Smooth Grooves: A Sensual Collection, Vol. 9 put the series back on track after strong but a tad bit weaker volmues in the series. The CD opens up with a personal favorite of mine, Real Love by Skyy followed by the doo-wop classic A Penny For Your Thoughts by The Tavers. There's also an extended verison of the classic Computer Love.

The strongest tracks are 4, 5, and 7.

This is not consistently good enough to listen to frequently or take a run with.

I like this cd I own a few Smooth Grooves cd out of the whole collection and I have to say this one is very nice also and I like it ; It is a nice cd to wind down to and listen to while taking a bubble bath and also just spending a romantic evening with a special person to cuddle with I enjoy it ; this cd has some nice tracks ; they are : Something's on your mind, you remind me , Oh Honey, and many other great songs I would definitely reccommend this cd to anyone who likes old skool love jams !!!!

Slow jams and Quiet storm ballads at their best.......2006-12-11

Smooth Grooves: A Sensual Collection, Vol. 4 is without a doubt the strong compliation in the nine disc series. Smooth Grooves: A Sensual Collection, Vol. 4 collects more seductive slow jams and quiet storm ballads, including the Gap Band's "Outstanding," Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing," the Mary Jane Girls' "All Night Long," and the Isley Brothers' "Between the Sheets." The CD also includes Juicy Fruit by Mtume, Tonight's The Night by Betty Wright and Hollywood by Chaka Khan. If you pick up just one disc in the series then this is the one to get.

This Series is really not bad, but once you hear the real deal, it pales a lot.

I have collected all the Smooth Grooves volumes. All these songs bring back memories. I must say this is quality collection. My friends and I remember Juicy Fruit very well as well as Send For Me. They very rarely play these on our local radio station. Some of these songs are nice and slow and then some are for fast dancing.

Smooth Grooves: New Jack Ballads, Vol. 3 closes out the New Jack Ballads series very strong. The disc features the timless slow jam Let's Chill by Guy and the sentimenatl I Promise I Do Love You by Dreamboy. There's also some rareties on the disc including another hot rap ballad Slow Love by Doc Box & B. Fresh. market, If you want a disc featuring such hits as Mac Band's "Roses Are Red," 52nd Street's "Tell Me (How It Feels)," )," Timex Social Club's "Thinkin' About Ya," Tawatha's "No More Tears," Mico Wave's "Instant Replay" and Club Nouveau's "Why You Treat Me So Bad", plus the tracks I mentioned then this is the disc for you !

Very good CD filled with hard to find hits from 52nd Street (worth the price of the CD) and also Mac band. What may be the best song on this is D'eja. Pick up the CD it's worth it!!!

Finally.......2000-02-24

I had been looking for the song "Slow Love" by Doc Box & B. Fresh for years. No one knew who or what I was talking about and even the internet was not helpful (ie..search engines) But...thankfully..this site was able to locate the song for me. This song brings back so many great memories and it is nice to know that I wasn't just crazy thinking I remembered a song that doesn't exist. It exists and it is one of the best songs I know. The rest of the CD is great too. But "Slow Love" is the jam! Check it out!

As plushy and smooth as disco got, MFSB--the small-army-sized house band of Philadelphia's Gamble-Huff production team--had a couple of deathless grooves in them nonetheless: "Love Is the Message," which appears here twice (once in its hypertrophic dance-floor extension), and the microadjusted wah-wah rhythms of "Sexy." Beyond those hits, this collection goes through the period pieces of their discography: old-fashioned boogaloo, instrumental covers of other people's funk, rhythm-section workouts sweetened heavily with strings and horns. The band's strength was throwing Philly soul's tart voices and burning sentiments into sharp relief; without their contrast, MFSB were barely more than jazzy spun sugar, though T.J. Tindall's growling fuzz guitar firmed up their edges. --Douglas Wolk

Need a reason to buy this disc?.......2006-07-13

I'll give you one and it's all you'll need: "Love is the Message".

You may or may not know this but "Love is the Message" is considered by nearly every dance music d.j. worth their salt to be the single greatest dance track of all time and with good reason. On this disc, you get the full version of the song which runs eleven minutes and a half plus the love groove bonus which is just the break at the end of the song.

I can literally listen to that track on a loop for hours. It really is an amazing piece of craftsmanship and it's so rich and multilayered that you can really appreciate what went into the song.

The rest of the album is very good, with another standout track being MFSB's interpretation of Curtis Mayfield's "Freddie's Dead".

Strongly recommended for those that appreciate the classics and have become disillusioned by the state of music today.

MFSB is a group that uses real instruemts and real vocals to come up with these brilliant tracks. No fancy overproduction, no sampling (although their work is often sampled); just a collection of pure soul from the old school. A worthy purchase for any music lover.

Before disco was co-opted by the white shirts and hacks out to make a quick buck, REAL dance music was being made like this. Forget BPM's and remixes, MFSB did it all real time. Complex arrangements, swirling strings, punchy horns, vibes, and a KILLER rhythm section propelled the beat AND the melody. Gamble & Huff and their team of writers, arrangers, and singers made it all seem so simple. The swing revival going on now should also include the music of MFSB, which not only swings hard, but teases, cajoles, soothes, and inspires. Just try NOT dancing to this!!!!

Love Millie Jackson's sexy rap.......2007-05-10

There are two reasons why soul diva Millie Jackson is not as big a star as Aretha Franklin: 1) Her fondness for x-rated material, which often kept her songs from being played on the radio; and 2) her penchant for bad album covers, such as the one in which she's sitting on a toilet. But when Millie gets her groove on, there's no one to match her, not even mighty 'Re. A good example is "(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Wanna Be Right," an old Luther Ingram song (also covered by Barbara Mandrell) that Millie enhances with a lengthy rap about the plight of the "other woman". Millie's sexy rap alone makes volume 8 of "Smooth Grooves" worth the price of the CD.

Decent Collection.......2006-12-11

Smooth Grooves: A Sensual Collection, Vol. 8 it isn't as consistent as earlier volumes in the series, but it contains a number of forgotten quiet storm classics from the late '70s and early '80s, including Levert's "(Pop, Pop, Pop, Pop) Goes My Mind," and The Emotions' "Don't Ask My Neighbors," Miki Howard's "Come Share My Love" and Larry Graham's "When We Get Married," among several other winners. One of my favorite songs on the CD is Atlantic Starr's Let's Get Closer but the standout on this CD is Who Can I Run to by the Jones Girls. The stunning ballad enjoyed a wide, spacious mix that generously showcased both the great lead vocals of Shirley Jones and her sisters' sweet harmonies. It stands as the Jones Girls' best ballad. The closing riff is sufficiently low-key and melodramatic with muted trumpet and soft flute. Xscape's 1995 gold cover pretty much adhered to the Jones Girls' original unsurpassed version.

Not one of the best volumes.......2006-06-27

If you want to get well acquainted with the Smooth Grooves series, it is best to find something from the first four volumes.

One surprise in this set, though, was Herbie Hancock's "Stars in Your Eyes." It was not something that I knew was by him, and it sounds very different from a lot of what he has written before. (Much of what he does is find a theme over the first measure of the song and then use is *all the way through*-- "Watermelon Man" or "Cantaloupe Island.")

This is, however, listenable if you just want to sit back and chill out after a day at work or are doing something that requires a mellow mood. (It is not seduction music.)

Fair slow jams collection .......2005-03-30

Rhino typically throws together great hit-packed collections but this is somewhat of an exception. The biggest chart hit here is #1 R&B hit "(Pop,Pop,Pop,Pop) Goes my Mind" from Levert. Outside of that, there are 3 R&B top 10s and one that just missed ("Magic Man" hit #11 for Robert Winters and Fall in 1980) with the rest being album tracks.

The great Stylistics soundalike "Country Girl (You're my Everything)"[didn't chart] astounds with some thrilling falsetto work. Millie Jackson's epic album cover of "(If Loving You is Wrong) I Don't Want to be Right"[didn't chart] brings every married woman's worst fears to life as Millie points out the problems with chasing someone who's already taken but then goes on to a laundry list of why she'd RATHER be with a married man..'the sweetest thing about the whole sitation is..that when you go to the laundromat you don't have to wash nobody's funky drawers but your own'. An album track from Atlantic Starr is wonderful ("Let's Get Closer")[didn't chart]. The Levert track ("(Pop,Pop,Pop,Pop) Goes my Mind") was a deserved #1 on the R&B charts.

Lesser tracks are one hit wonder Black Ice with "Blind Over You"[didn't chart] (their dance number "Shake Down Pt. 1" was a minor hit), a Patti LaBelle cover of "If You Don't Know me by Know"[#79 R&B,1986] from a 1985 concert in D.C., is pretty but it won't make you forget Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes 1972 hit rendition. "Come Share My Love" was a pretty sizable hit (#5 R&B,1986) but just doesn't have the timeless quality it needs to still sound good these days.

BOTTOM LINE:
If you're just looking for slow dance music, there are better collections. But if you're looking to find some "new" songs you may not know, the low charters (and non charters) here hide some gems.

The first volume of this long-running series of "quiet storm" classics is also one of the best. Among the '70s and early-'80s soul ballads included are several that helped define the popular radio format: the long live version of Earth, Wind & Fire's "Reasons," Heatwave's "Always and Forever," and Larry Graham's "One in a Million You." Where later Smooth Grooves CDs get bogged down in prettiness for its own sake, the performances here are marked by regret (Teddy Pendergrass's eternal "Love T.K.O.," Champaign's "How 'Bout Us") or a true sweetness (the Manhattans' "Shining Star"). The finest are music of the soul, music that deserves to be heard with or without a lover around. --Rickey Wright

Slow Jams Lover's Paradise.......2006-12-11

Smooth Grooves: A Sensual Collection, Vol. 1 was an amazing start of a classic slow jams that new school couples and old school couples can appericate. The first track the classic Reasons (Live) has become a staple on my DJ mix tapes sounds better than the studio version. Track 2 is the always classic Always & Forever by Heatwave followed by the sentimental Forever Mine by The'O'Jays.

If you like classic R&B, this CD is for you. The title of the CD says it all. Grab your wine and your woman, throw on this CD and,...you get the idea.

Every single song on this CD is good. "Love's Train" has that unforgettable vocal performance. Alone, it makes the whole CD worth buying.

When buying whole albums, artists nowadays tend to run out of musical ideas about 1/2 way through the CD. And even for those artists that have a never ending supply of new ideas, you can tired of the same voices and the same musicians contained in a single album.

With this CD, neither of those things is an issue. If you want to set someone in the mood to get out of their clothes, this can be a critical tool in that quest.

One of my favorite's in the series.......2006-12-11

Smooth Grooves: A Sensual Collection, Vol. 3 continues a great trend in the series of providing sensual listening experiences. The listener is a hit with a quadruple TKO with the first four tracks on the CD. First you get the extended mix of Float On by The Floaters. The song is eleven minutes and 49 seconds of slow jam bliss. The second song You Are My Starship by Norman Connors is another winner as is # 3. Voyage To Atlantis by The Isley Brothers . Track 4. 'Cause I Love You by Lenny Williams has become an everlasting slow jam that is one of the most heartfelt songs a man ever sung to a woman. Two of my other tracks on the CD are # 10 Something He Can Feel by Aretha Franklin & # 12 You Don't Have To Cry by Rene & Angela. Something He Can Feel" is a startling showcase for Curtis Mayfield's empathetic skills (he said that he tried to imagine how a woman feels when she loves a man) and serves as one of Franklin's best '70s sides while You Don't Have To Cry showcases everlasting love.
