When Wagner set the Ring to music, he intended the orchestra to act in the fashion of a chorus from a classic Greek tragedy--setting the mood and commenting on the action. In order to allow a nonverbal musical line to reflect on the plot, Wagner developed a psychologically and musically complex symbology to communicate his thoughts to the listener. From the beginning the Ring has spawned numerous written commentaries on the relationships of the motif structure, but by using examples from the Decca Ring recording, Deryck Cooke's thoughtful spoken commentary is by far the most accessible guide for either the fledgling Ring enthusiast or the seasoned veteran. --Christian C. Ring introduction critique.......2006-11-04
This is very worthwhile, at the same time it requires time, patience and attention, but it does provide some keys to better enjoyment of a sensational piece of music.
FASCINATING STUDY FOR NOVICES AND AFFICIONADOS ALIKE.......2006-08-16
This may look an intimidating, daunting and dull prospect - a 2+ hour lecture on the motifs in the Ring. Don't be put off. Whether you're a relative novice to the Ring and want to find out what it's all about, more experienced with a desire to understand the composer's methods better or an afficionado who thinks he knows it all inside out, there is great pleasure as well as elucidation to be had from this set. Originally made to accompany the Decca Solti Ring, it contains a multitude of musical illustrations taken from those recordings as well as some specially recorded by Solti just for this Introduction.
It wasn't the first time this has been tried. The famous HMV sets from the late 20's also included recorded examples of over 100 motifs. (These, by the way, are available as part of the Pearl reissue of those wonderful HMV recordings). What that set lacked was the wonderful insights as well as the approachability of the talk by Deryck Cooke. Cooke was a great and much missed musicologist - a Mahler expert responsible for the performing edition of the Tenth Symphony still most played today, a fascinating explorer into the nature of music's basic building-blocks in his excellent book, The Language of Music, and an inspiring and elucidating critic of Wagner's work as shown by the fascinating book he left unfinished at his death, I Saw the World End.
On these CDs he does much more than list the leitmotifs and identify them as calling-cards. He shows the amazingly integrated and organic growth of the musical material that Wagner uses throughout his vast work. He demonstrates how motifs can change their sense and meaning as they evolve through the drama. And he shows how the complex combinations of motifs can radically advance both the musical and the dramatic narrative of the piece. There are even places where he corrects the misinterpretation of some of the motifs that had become ingrained from early commentators' false labels.
This set should engage and enlighten anyone with an interest in Wagner's huge and inexhaustible tetralogy. Do give it a try - no matter how far down the road to Wagnerianism you are.
Welcome back to a classic analysis.......2006-05-28
Deryck Cooke's lecture series upon THE RING is almost as much a classic by now as the Solti RING cycle, with which it was originally issued on LP, and from which it derives its musical examples. The difference is that whereas the Solti RING has been continuously in print ever since it was completed, and was among the first opera sets to benefit from the CD revolution, the Cooke analysis was for long almost totally unobtainable. Now we have it back. It should be welcomed: it is a classic. Cooke's mellow, deep voice with the hint of a Celtic burr - which made him ideal on BBC radio - patiently explains Wagner's melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic metamorphoses to such good effect that if you own this recording, you really require no other RING analysis. (A pity about the abrupt beginnings and endings of too many vocal and orchestral illustrations, though.) Musicology lost a fine, sensitive thinker with Cooke's premature death in 1976.
If all you want is dilettantish baby food, there are plenty of dumbed-down Wagner commentaries on the market, stretching from Anna Russell's famous monologue (which doesn't pretend to be anything other than a parody aimed at morons) to the latest standard-issue "Wagner-was-a-Nazi-boo-hiss" feuilleton (which, unfortunately, does). Without reasonable score-reading skill you will find Cooke useless, however diligently you have ploughed through Marx, Jung, Freud, or other gurus purportedly relevant to THE RING. Cooke expects you to use your brains and your musical sense. Quelle horreur. At today's BBC his "elitism" would render him unemployable.
Essential for Understanding Wagner's Ring Cycle.......2006-05-15
I originally bought this set on vinyl in the early 70s when I discovered the Ring in college. I studied the records and booklet assiduously, and after about three run-throughs I finally started getting it. Wow! Thirty-five years later, I still remember Mr. Cooke's analyses of various motive families, and I don't know how I could have mastered and loved the Ring without him. I now own this set on CD and listen again on the rare occasion of attending a Ring performance. My wife calls me a "Ring nut," but of course I'm nuts about many other things as well.
Bottom line, buy this set and study it if the Ring has captivated you as it has countless others. The presentation is dry, but sticking with it brings measureless and longlasting rewards.
Very Functional.......2006-03-19
This CD set is excellent for what it sets out to do: present the leitmotives of the Ring according to their relationship to one another and their role in developing both characters and plotlines. Deryck Cooke's lectures on each motive are very insightful, very helpful at cueing the listener into the semantic aspect of Wagner's orchestral writing. The one drawback is that the musical examples are a bit jarring. Without fade-ins or -outs, the engineering is quite barbaric. And though the orchestra was, I believe, conducted by Solti, and is beautifully done, the vocal performances can be quite unpleasant. Point being: this is not background music, but in accomplishing what it sets out to do, it is very successful, and I don't know of anything else like it.

Absolutely Amazing!!! ('specially for white folk).......2004-03-27
This is an absolute must!!! I have never heard such passionate singing of spirituals from non-black choirs. Perhaps that is attributed to Shaw's minister roots. As usual, the sonority of Shaw's singers is second to none. This is a fun CD that all can enjoy...not just the choral buffs who know just how good Shaw and his choirs are!!!
Not Up to Shaw's Usual Standard.......2002-03-23
Maybe just personal taste. I don't find the arrangements and vocalizing as interesting and satisfying as "Sea Chanties" and "23 Glee Club Favorites", the latter setting a standard never equaled.
A Must CD for Choral Music Lovers.......2001-01-03
Amazing Grace is a very appropriate title for this recording. For those of you who love Sacred Harp , Southern Harmony and Spirituals, you will revel in the folk traditions of this album. Parker and Shaw arrangements, and sometimes just one or the other are so well done. The singers, of course, do an excellent job of making music under Shaw's direction. "Hark I Hear.." arr. by Parker is becoming a standard for choruses and this album will help you hear why. "If I've got my ticket" by Shaw is a wonderful exchange between solo and chorus. You will be playing this CD over and over once you hear it.
Soul-stirring.......2000-08-10
I have thoroughly enjoyed this CD. The thoughtful and meditative, "What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul" sends the listener awe-struck to the foot of the cross. The triumphant "Ride on King Jesus!" reminds the listener of final victory. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who appreciates musical and cultural heritage or for anyone who appreciates religious music.

Customer Reviews:
Great gems from musicals that dissapeared.......2004-11-30
Songs from 1987's "Smile" make this well worth the price. The previously unreleased material from the late, great Howard Ashman deserves to have it's moment in the spotlight.
Also, there's Judy Kuhn's beautiful performance on "Starfish", Christine Baranski's vampy turn on "Sherry".
Finally, there's" New Words" from "One, Two, Three, Four, Five". This show has been restaged, by small theatre groups, under the title "History Loves Company". "New Words" is by far the best number of this show and Liz Callaway's voice fills with love as she sings this lullaby.
For a consummate musical theatre fan who's heard it all, this disc is a refreshing look at what has been lost over the years.
some gold mixed with dross.......2003-12-21
Some of these songs desrve to be unsung. But then you get a showstopper like Sherry and you wonder how could this show have flopped? That number alone makes this cd worth purchasing.I also enjoyed Marvin Hamlisch's toe tapping title song - Smile. There are also a few other lovely melodies which makes this cd a nice addition to a Broadway collection.

Shaw all by Himself.......2006-07-05
Robert Shaw is still considered on of the finest choral conductors this country has ever produced. When he took over the podium of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra some felt his talents were being wasted on orchestral influence: a few seasons into the role as an orchestral conductor erased the doubts of his ability in that realm. One of the aspects of his tenure programming was always to include the major works for orchestra and chorus and fortunately most of those works were recorded before his death.
In this superb CD Robert Shaw returns to his roots as choral conductor, presenting a group of a cappella works that demonstrates just how wide-ranging was his repertoire and a renewed appreciation for this gifts in drawing the very finest of choral singing from his musicians. Included here are near perfect performances of a wide variety of works: de Victoria's 'O vos omnes, qui transitis per viam', Thomas Tallis' 'A new commandment', Poulenc's 'Quatre motets pour un temps de pénitence' and 'Quatre motets pour le temps de Noël', Debussy's 'Chansons de Charles d'Orléans', Brahms' 'Waldesnacht' and 'Abendständchen', Aleksandr Kopylov's 'Heavenly Light', excerpts form the Rachmaninov 'Vespers', Verdi's 'Sacred Pieces', Britten's 'Hymn to St. Cecilia', Arvo Part's 'Magnificat', Frank Martin's 'Mass', and three spirituals.
Some may argue this is too wide a selection for a CD, that while this made make for a brilliant evening's performance in the concert hall, it is too much variation to digest on a CD format. But those who feel that way can parcel out the treasures here recorded according to their needs. For a sampling of the genius of Robert Shaw conducting a cappella works, this CD is as fine as they come. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, July 06

i dig the phobes.......1999-09-06
i've had the pleasure of seeing the phobes perform in Philadelphia at the Khyper as well as purchase Poverty Jetset. though the phobes live and the phobes on record are two very different performances, i enjoy both greatly. the record contains some clean thoroughly rockin songs. i was reminded of bands such as the buzzcocks, the choclate watchband and the jam. the production is somewhere between lo-fi and hi-fi. my personal fav song is either "you'll never see me" or "the life in a day".
but don't limit yourself to the phobes record, try to catch them live (probably mostly east coast). they obviously give it all they got when they perform and it rubs off.

Another Tribute album..........2003-12-02
Upon listening to this CD, one ponders the question why re-create songs that are already in this arrangement? Norah Jones is very mello, dull and boring as it is. All of her work is through-composed. She just writes as she goes with no attention to form.
These Vitamin guys must be cranking these CD's out in bulk just hoping that one will cash in. Do we really need muzak versions of all these rock-pop artists? The music was created originally for a certain ensemble. Putting it in string format does not heighten it's credibility. Furthermore Vitamin keeps hiring the same people to do these arrangements, why not at least experiement and make logical new arrangements based on the music (i.e. maybe a smooth jazz for Norah) to offer a fresh version-whoops you might steal that idea now...also I heard the tracks from the guy that was originally hired to do this..Joe Andolino.. and he's a great arranger. Too bad Vitamin doesn't care. Based on the used copies available of this already it speaks for itself.

TERRIFIC MUSIC FROM A MARVELOUS TALENT.......2002-02-20
This is just vintage Lucie---excellent love songs all sung with that warm, rich, vibrant voice. She's terrific!
In her Prime.......2001-11-02
The best yet. Her voice is as soothing as honey and she reveals her innermost feelings. It's like listening to Piaf or to Mel Torme, velvet tones from people who really sing Love Ballads.

One and the Same features music by Gauthier, Nels Cline, Eric von Essen, and Bennie Maupin. Jazz of the Highest Quality.......2007-01-11
I had never heard of Jeff Gauthier before I bought this album, but I will without a doubt be getting more of his work. I stumbled across this album while researching the works of Nels Cline, who is probably my favorite guitarist ever.
I listened to a few songs and I was instantly hooked. I love the way Gauthier transforms the violin into a jazz instrument. His playing is unlike any I have heard before. In many of the songs, the guitar and violin will be playing the same line, or harmonizing (beautifully.)
As a surprse to me, every artist on this album is incredible. I would listen to a song and think; "wow, that bassist is good, I wonder what else he has done?"
Nels Cline is in his top form. He manages to beautifully float between structured playing and ambient, electronic, and sometimes even chaotic sounding effects. Fans of him will be far from dissapointed. It seems like Cline gets better with every album he releases.
Joel Hamilton is a superb bass player. He is so good, in fact, that I am surprised I had not heard of him before (I play bass myself). He knows exactly how to be prominent within a song without pushing the other instruments aside. His smooth and relaxed bass lines lay down a rock solid base (ha ha, it is a phonetic pun!) for every song.
David Witham is better than your average pianist as well. His piano playing is light and playful, and seems very relaxed. Without it, the songs would sound empty, and I believe that Witham really holds everything right where it should be.
Alex Cline is a very good percussionist. His drumming varies between comlex fills and driving beats to light and quiet jazz drum lines. And he is more than capable of playing it all; and playing it very, very well.
But the beauty of this album lies not in its individual members, but in how all of these brilliant musicians are able to work together. You can tell immediately that the members of the Goatette have been playing together for a while. They all know each other well, and each musician is able to feed off of the others. The songs are perfectly balanced; no one instrument ever stands out more than it should. They work together in order to create a song, but they also each step out in turn into the foreground and take a solo. And oh what solos...
The album art is very cool, too. The paint splatter on the front is the same as the design on the actual CD but there are five or six more of different colors when you open the CD up. This CD is from Cryptogramophone Records; and in my experience, their CD's all have beautiful packaging.
I could honestly keep writing more and more here. I could start picking apart each individual song; writing about what in it I like, and what I love. But in order to save you some time, I will simply close with a recommendation. This is a CD for fans of Gauthier, Nels Cline, the Goatette, or for anyone who enjoys listening to exceptional jazz. With all of the mediocre music flooding the market today, it is hard to sift through it all in order to find the real treasures. Well you, my friend, have just scooped a gold nugget up out of the dirt.
Even better than Mask!.......2006-05-17
I've been following Jeff Gauthier around for years, and I can honestly say that this is the most enjoyable album he's recorded under his own name. It's got all the Gauthier trademarks - his knack for finding lyricism even in the outest settings, great Eric von Essen tunes and a couple elegant originals, and a freakishly good group of improvisers playing with him - then wraps them all up in a perfectly balanced mix and an eye-popping package. Denizens of the L.A. jazz scene have long regarded Nels and Alex Cline as two of the strongest sidemen around, but it's really nice to hear David Witham and Joel Hamilton come into their own on this one, too. Just listen to them spacey keyboard sounds and pumping bass pistons on "Ahfufat." Between this and the earlier Ben Goldberg/Erik Friedlander releases, 2006 is already a banner year for Cryptogramophone, and it's only May.
