Worth the Search.......2005-12-19

There are two versions of the song "You Can't Resist It": a rather anemic electric guitar version that appears on Lyle Lovett's eponymous first album, and the much-improved version on this disc, recorded after the formation of the Large Band. The single version has a much richer instrumentation and deeper production, and is worth buying this disc for all on its own. The only other place to get the newer version of "You Can't Resist It" is on the "Live in Texas" concert album, but you get it here without that long cello solo in the middle.

The rest of this single is a good sampling of Lyle Lovett's various song styles. "M-O-N-E-Y" is a wry vocal-heavy song about just what it takes to attract a woman. "Once is Enough" pretty well describes the number of listens the song is worth. "If I Had a Boat" is a Lovett classic with lots of upbeat country influences and cowboy imagery. "Simple Song" is Lovett at his melancholy best.

This can be a difficult disc to track down, but if you're a Lyle Lovett completist or just love the one song, it's worth the search.

This Album is terrible.......2005-10-27

After listening to this album, I am very disappointed. When Jessica first won on "Road to Stardom" I was so excited because I knew her album would be slamming. But it was a total shock after hearing this album. Jessica's voice is very soulful and very original.However, this album did not show none of that. Her songs that she wrote for her audition sounded alot better. Somebody please just let her write her own damn songs.

First of all, I've heard two singles from this album already:
"Don't Give A Damn" and "You Don't Need Him", and wondered where had this girl been when I needed her. I am indeed a Mary J. Blige fan, but since Mary has taken a break from her infamous "whoa is me..." songs, which I adored (Hate to do ya like that Mary, but I gotta do it cuz its only right) but... Jessica is just what the doctor ordered and I must have fallen asleep during 2000. Oh my goodness, I can't express how happy I was to see her win the Road to Stardom with Missy Elliott competition and then to find out that she already has an album whoa... surely there will be an explanation granted on the whole "whoa is me" scenario from the show. Did she have to do this competition to re-entered the music business. What happened between the release of this album and NOW. I know one thing had she made herself over on the "Roads to Stardom" (hair-do and makeup) like on this album I might have choked on my own gasps.... Well she is in Missy's hand now......Jessica, is truly a "diamond-in-the-ruff"......I hope the song: "Why Me" is released in the acapella version with her new single. "Why Me" is truly a single I am going to look forward to hearing!!! I could go on and on but I must find another forum to do so.....But to answer your question Jessica: "Why Me"? Cuz she is truly deserving of being a celebrity....no need to be "RESTLESS" because her phone is probably ringing off the HOOK.

Yet she needed a TV show to show it? Jessica is very talented, this album is amazing, and she most defenaitly had what it taked to become the winner of The Road To Stardom. I hope Jessica becomes a huge star in the future.

I love this album...Jessica's voice is beautiful and she is truly talented...she definitely deserved to win but now I have a question....how did she end up in the competition having had an album out already and Deltrice who had nothing out loses...hmmmmm?

it's one of my prefered country-rock cd .......2006-05-05

I have probably 1000 country music cds at home and this is one my best.I am extremely sorry that I cannot find other cds by this excelent artist. the style is pure and original country rock music, the voice is beautiful, the band is perfect the songs are fine and I can listen to the full album enjoying it from the start to the end.
CMT promoted her and they had a good taste when they did so.
I miss her now as this first cd was a real delight.
I Hope I can find her name on a new cd one day and I trust that, with such talent, it will happen.
I would vote 6 stars for her if this would exist !

A superb album by a wonderful writer/artist.......2003-08-15

One of the best talents to come from not only Canada, but from anywhere in music.

A strong start is 'What Else Can I Do', a perfect example of a great contemporary country single. Mid tempo and rockin' as well, it carries a strength not found in a lot of innovative country tunes.

Her self penned 'I Don't Wanna Be The One' is a well penned of advice to a friend. But the lyrics aren't just neat, they're well placed and not trying too hard to be soooo clever and cool. It already is. Catchy !

Her other baby here, 'Crazy Fool' makes it a sweet time to slow things down and let love take over. Tenderly. Back to the loud, comes her fun-fun-fun 'Keep Me Rockin'. The lyrics makes you spin, and laugh out loud for more ! This wicked blues soaked rock song...ah, can't say enough....

Watch for her cover of Lyle Lovett's 'You Can't Resist It', and you CAN'T ! Perhaps the most in depth and involving is 'Somebody's Leaving'.
A buzzsaw electric guitar and her vocals have a depth that gets into this moody story here. Strong track.

If Patricia weren't doing a mix of country and roots rock, she might be visually and vocally thought of as a rock artist. Although I love her doing both arenas, I know she'd do awesome with either straight ahead. Thankfully, country and rock suit her both so well. Patricia, you have my vote as this being one of my favourite albums ever, and my fav gal of music. Mean it. And I mean all those stars ( 5 ! )

Superior Achievement From A Woefully Underrated Talent.......2001-04-02

This is a first rate effort, a first class performance from a talented, down-to-earth lady, unjustly shunted into the background of Canadian music by no-talents like Shania Twain and people like her who have taken over music with plastic personas and third rate material. Not only does Patricia have this against her, but she is just one of the increasingly many country/folk recording artists in Canada who are being booted off their major label for not registering significant sales. If you don't sell at least past Gold in Canada, you're toast. Despite a rigorous touring schedule and major support from CMT in Canada, Patricia has yet to break through in the United States. This is not a country recording in the truest sense of the word. Patricia and producers Mike Wanchic and Justin Niebank created a sound that borrows from roots/rockabilly/country/rock. Linda Ronstadt comes immediately to mind, as she too tightroped her way across those same sounds as well. The most distinctive sound is Patricia's voice - confident, deep and sultry. The musicianship is solid. The songwriting is top notch - Kostas, Matraca Berg, Jennifer Kimball, Lyle Lovett, Tony Arata and Patricia Conroy herself. The centrepiece of this recording is also the leadoff track - the confident, bluesy, first-rate hit rocker "What Else Can I Do", superbly sung, simply written. This recording is possibly the best thing Conroy has delivered to date. The first-rate material keeps coming with Lovett's "You Can't Resist It"; the dark, thundering "Somebody's Leavin'"; Conroy's great "I Don't Wanna Be The One" and the party song "Keep Me Rockin'" - all major hits in Canada. This is a career album from a very talented performer. Conroy should feel very proud of this achievement. Highly respected, she has continued to release fine material, now as an independent artist, free of the pressure of a major's demands. When the day is done, real talent like this will always overshadow banal tripe.

Really lovely Capitol debut of the opera/ musical comedy performer. Miss Alberghetti's soprano is set off beautifully in string arrangements of great standards.
A wonderful souvenir of a charming star & of a magical time in show biz when she graced the stage and screen.
