I agree with Mr. Pac Dan about some of the songs not being 12 inches, but still is a great buy, especially as a constant enjoyment reminder of the real essence of music and just havin' a phenomenally great/quality time whenever you heard these songs.
Old School Jams, Vol. 3.......2006-12-21
It has taken me years to finally find a disk with the "Original" version of "The Show" with Doug E. Fresh and the Get Fresh Crew. For those in the know, the part where Slick Rick says "Me-Shell, Ma-Bell...." was strangely edited out in every other version of the song that I've ever come across on Compact Disc. A special "Thank You" to whomever found the "Original" 12-inch version!
The rest of the disk isn't bad, either. But, for me, it's strictly "The Show!" Four stars!!
If You're Not Concerned With Quality.........................2006-09-13
Then you will enjoy this CD otherwise it's a waste of money, mostly Vinyl records transferred to CD and poorly done at that. You can clearly hear vinyl noise and pops/crackles. There should be a law that CD's transfered from vinyl records should state so on the package. I wasted my money.

this is a nice collection of old school songs theres not one song I cant listen to.
I would recommened it for everybody who used to go clubbing back in the 80s..

I get so tired of seeing the same songs put on Old school CD's. All they know is Maze "Before I let go" and the Isley Brother's "Between the Sheet", these artist have other hit songs that are worthy of Old School type CD's. If I see "More Bounce to the Ounce" on another CD, I am going to scream.

I was really enjoying going back in time with this CD. I was entering and in my teen years with these songs and haven't heard some of the songs since those times. I let my sisters listen to it also and they were really grooving on these songs as well. They wanted my CD, I told them they should buy it.

When I purchased this one I was happy to find that there were more to follow. I am not that old but this music takes you back to the times when music was music. I love these songs and I love listening to them over and over again. I bought this CD because of Double Dutch Bus and Square Bizz, but I like all the tracks now. A great buy and I highly recommend it.
When Music Was Music Back in the Day.......2004-05-23
Listening to these songs reminds me of the days when music was enjoyable and fun to listen and dance to. Most of the music on the charts detail lewd sex and violence. Some of the artists even have no bones about being arrested and having criminal records. It's a shame we don't shun some of the conduct that is portrayed in their lyrics.

Even though I'm Not too much of a old timer, I still enjoy alot of the jams on this cd. It takes me back to when me & all my friends use to kick it! It was one of my favorit cd's then & it still is now. If you ask me the best tracks are: 2. Double Dutch Bus - Frankie Smith,7. Atomic Dog - George Clinton,9. Cutie Pie -One Way and 13. You Dropped The Bomb - Gap Band. I think all of the old school vol. have great jams; I just wished they had all your favorit hits all on one cd! I would recommend this cd to both the young & old.

I grew up on this stuff even though I'm only 16. All the songs blended hip-hip with techno. All the beats seem unique and exotic. They are all something that you don't hear in today's rap/hip-hop unless they use the beat. Missy Elliott got her "Lose Control" beat from the song "Clear" off this cd. This cd includes the mega hit "Planet Rock" by Afrika Bambaataa & the Soulsonic Force. Every song here is great and major part of rap/hip-hop history and culture but here are my top 5:

As Good As Music Gets!.......2005-09-13
Many of the sounds on this CD are about as good as rap/hip hop/electronic funk gets. Planet Rock is close to musical perfection in my opinion. How I wish the hip hop scene of today would return to its musical roots.

I can't praise this 4 cd set enough.
Sound quality is excellent, decent liner notes - fantastic track selection.
Part 1 includes "Planet Rock" (Afrika Bambaataa), "Play At Your Own Risk" (Planet Patrol) and "Rockit" (Herbie Hancock).
Parts 2, 3 and 4 include "Siberian Nights" (Twilight 22), "Egypt, Egypt" (The Egyptian Lover) "White Horse" (Laid Back), "Don't Stop The Rock" (Freestyle) So many classics and the "Skanless Electric Funk Megamixes" are brilliant!
Anyone with even a passing interest in this type of music would be advised to purchase this.
Awesome collection.......2001-06-10
This CD is awesome! I just got it a few days ago and cannot stop playing it. There are so many early freestyle and hip-hop hits on here. Of course, you could not have an electric funk compilation without the classic Planet Rock by Afrika Bambaataa, which was one of the earliest (And best) hip-hop songs. Play At Your Own Risk by Planet Patrol is very catchy and easily danceable. The two megamixes are unbelievably good, and I think they should have made a CD with one long megamix. Another classic on here is Herbie Hancock's Rockit, which is infectious and awesome to dance too. If you like good, danceable, catchy music, and you are interested in listening to some early dance music, pick up this awesome CD. You will not be disapointed.

Going back to school.......2007-04-16
This is a great collection of songs from the seventies and eighties. It consists mainly of full-length LP or 12-inch versions of funk, disco and R&B tunes. They generally are in the five to seven minute range. It's certainly a welcome alternative to the edited single versions that are recycled on countless compilations time and again. Eventually, some of these tunes would be sampled in later years by other artists. There are three single versions on this album: "Think (About It)" by Lyn Collins,"Pass The Peas" by The JB's and "September" by EWF. This collection is great for parties or get togethers. If you like extended versions then you'll enjoy this album.
The first disc runs 78 minutes and the second 72 minutes.

If you came up in the mid 80's, I mean like in high school or something like that then you will know what I am talking about. This album and the series bring back so many memories. It was when rap was "happy" and the beats are what you paid attention to and you could actually rap the whole song with the MC. These tracks are oldschool and most younger people won't get the lyric's or beats. If you are over thirty then you have to get these and if you are younger you might learn some history.
Fantastic Beginnings of Hip Hop.......2005-10-21
A previous poster mad a really cruel review about this compilation series, and I've figured him all out. This individual is basically going on Amazon, and sampling soundbytes of certain albums, and just criticizing them just because he can. If you don't believe me, just check this person's listing of reviews. Every review is a "1 Star" Review, from Nine Inch Nails to The Killers. Please disregard his review, and listen to someone who actually "buys" and "listens" to music, and who was actually there during the beginnings of hip-hop. Many of these songs are still played at house parties, on mixshows, tv shows, and movies. The cool thing is that many jams of this era's hip hop was very lighthearted, fun, non-violent, and even downright silly, BUT they got the butts on the dancefloor, and that's what has been missing in hip hop and rap. This whole series I would recommend to anyone who is interested in historical origins of genres and sub-genres, or just want to relive a more innocent time. But like those kids on Reading Rainbow would say, "Don't Take MY Word For It"

Ice-T is the only good rapper on here, The rest is lameo stupid disco schlock. This is posuer rap. im talking total losers. Stupid kiddie beats make this sound like an episode of Mr Rogers

As usual Tom Joyner has put out another great complication of hits to bring back the memories of yesteryear.
If you grew up during the 70's & 80's this is a trip down memory lane. For those of you who enjoy music the way it was meant to be created then this is for you. Your teenage children will love it as well.
Definitely a must have.

If you grew up in the "80's" (as for myself I graduated high school in 1981)this CD is for you. It features all of the late 70's through 80's hits, mixed just as I remembered them from high school and college days.

Is this a must-have for true old-school funketeers? As "Melvin" would say, "Oh yesssss!" You will dance, you will sing, you will smile -- and the best part is, a portion of the proceeds go to the Tom Joyner Foundation. Anyone claiming to be a fan of old-school R&B will be totally rewarded with this CD's collection of hits.
From hard-to-find jams like "Must Be The Music" and "I Hear Music in the Streets" to funk-tastic standbys "Holy Ghost", "Fantastic Voyage" and "Good Times", there is no way anyone who grew up in the 70s and 80s will be disappointed. Steve "Silk" Hurley picked 20 great songs, and the mix is fluent and flawless. I hadn't heard Bohannon's "Let's Start the Dance" since I was in college in Atlanta (Clark College, now CAU).
Hey, Mr. Joyner, may I recommend including Brick's "We Don't Wanna Sit Down, We Wanna Get Down", Teena Marie's "Square Biz", and Imagination's "Just An Illusion" on the next CD? Bet. Keep 'em coming; I'll holla!

Back to "Skool".......2002-05-11
Sheer pleasure from start to finish.
Steve "Silk" Hurley outdoes himself with the mixing of some incredibly juicy old-skool classics on this disc. The mix of Chaka Khan's rockin' Clouds into Side Effect's "Always There" is worth the ticket for admission. When you hear the guitar riff from CLouds launching into the vocal intro of Always There, you can understand why Hurley is a Grammy Winner.
There are many other enjoyable nuggets on this disc, especially if you are a child of the best ever generation of soul music (1973-1979). Change's "The Glow Of Love" (with Luther Vandross on vocals) sounds sparkling, with a tremendous bass line brought front and center in this mix. "Street Life" sounds great, with emphasis added to the horns. And as always, Rapper's Delight, with its "Ho-tel, Mo-tel, Holiday Inn" chorus will have you singing just like Wonder Mike.
As with any mix disc, don't buy this looking for full original versions of these songs (some of which are exceedingly difficult to locate on CD). Most cuts eliminate final verses. But the mix itself is incredible, and you will have little reason to hit the skip button from start to finish.
