In the opening track of this live CD, Michael Bublé explodes "I'm feeeling GOOD!" Who could blame him? He's backed by a big--make that a really big--band, and the song sounds like a million bucks. You may quibble that Bublé is a nice fellow who's a bit lacking in both the charisma and swing departments, but the music here percolates with bouncing energing--just listen to "Summer Wind" or "The More I See You" to see how glorious arrangements (by Johnny Mandel and John Clayton Jr., respectively) can propulse a reasonably gifted but by no means transcendent singer into the stratosphere. Best of all, Bublé once again shows his ability to seamlessly bridge eras and styles by offering stylistically consistent covers of the Beatles' "Can't Buy Me Love" (done swing-style) and Lou Rawls' 1976 hit "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine" (done crooner-style in a duet with Italian singer Laura Pausini). (The DVD offers up a similar take on Queen's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," for instance.) The DVD portion of this combo set doubles the ante by offering 18 tracks (plus a bonus "Song for You" with Chris Botti) to the CD's 8. There's also a 20-minute backstage featurette showing what goes into the preparation for the show. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Album Description
Sensational young crooner Michael Buble stars in his first "Great Performances" PBS special this holiday season: that and his August live performance at the Wiltern in Los Angeles will be seen and heard in this CD/DVD package. Now Buble takes yet another giant step in his meteoric career.
Customer Reviews:
FABULOUS!.......2007-08-01
I first saw this DVD in part at Best Buy in the TV section and thought--"who is this guy? I love it!" So after buying his newest CD there was still a missing component for me. This DVD will make you twice the MB fan--he's so fun to watch and then when you listen to the included CD of the live performances you are brought right back to the stage and his wonderful voice. It is a great buy--you won't be disappointed!
Great value!.......2007-07-25
I love this music. Great orchestra backing up the songs with fantastic arrangements and musicianship. The vocals are done with taste and excitement.
Buble'.......2007-07-22
If it weren't for the DVD, this rating would have been a 3 star. The DVD is great, but the CD doesn't contain all the songs from the DVD, and the editing is terrible. As an example, Michael introduces his #1 hit song as the next number, but another song follows! Michael still sounds good as ever but given a second chance, I would probably purchase another of his CDs.
Superb.......2007-07-21
You get the best of both worlds with Michael's "Caught in the Act": a CD with some of the songs from the live concert and, of course, the DVD so you can see Michael's superb performance. Thank God a young singer finally came along who appreciates the great standards of yesteryear and who sings them superbly. You couldn't ask for anything more. Bravo Buble.

If you're wondering how Green Day managed to become the biggest punk band in the world, take a look at Bullet in a Bible. Recorded at their June 2005 two-night run at Milton Keynes National Bowl in England, this combined CD/DVD sees these former bong-hitting Californian dropouts embracing political activism, pantomime hilarity, and all the fripperies of a rock opera--and excelling at all three.
The first half is essentially a run-through of the group's 2004 album American Idiot, complete with anti-American rabble-rousing and a set of barbed insults tossed back at the "rednecks" across the pond. That out of the way, the band careen into a sort of greatest-hits set, with the likes of "Longview" and "Hitchin' a Ride" sharing space with a brass-laden "King for a Day" that sees Billie Joe Armstrong prancing around the stage in crown and ermine cape, singing snatches of Lulu's "Shout" and Eric Idle's "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life." Tremendously silly, but Green Day have managed to figure out how to play it like showmen without resorting to juvenile puerility or morphing into corporate yes-men, and that's a way harder trick than it looks. --Louis Pattison
Album Description
Featuring Green Day's first live DVD, the CD + DVD Bullet in a Bible captures the explosive band on the biggest tour in its career, in support of the Grammy-winning, quadruple-platinum, #1 charting American Idiot punk-rock epic. From two performances filmed in June 2005 before 65,000 fans, both in Milton Keynes in England, to the DVD's documentary segments following the band members around that city as they visit a war museum and various pubs, and share in-depth insights on the making and meaning of American Idiot, Green Day is #1 with a Bullet in a Bible. DVD: Video of the performance with documentary behind-the-scenes footage
Customer Reviews:
Electrifying.......2007-07-02
On the 'Bullet in a Bible' DVD, Billie Joe Armstrong says that some bands worry about how they would create intimacy in front of a crowd of 65,000, but said that for Green Day it was irrelevant as they weren't trying to create intimacy, they were trying to create an event. Ultimately that's what 'Bullet in a Bible' is, an event, a fantastic spectacle.
The band open with a spine tingling version of their newer hits with 'American Idiot' and 'Holiday' leading the line. They also show how well 'Jesus of Suburbia' works when performed live. After these songs, Green Day bring their newer, more uninitiated fans through some of the earlier Green Day catalogue, with quality performances of, among other songs, 'Longview', 'Basket Case' and 'Minority'. These performances should give an electrified jolt to all Green Day fans, new and old.
During the encore, Billy Joe brings the only moment of the before eschewed intimacy to the concert, with his closing rendition of 'Good Riddance'. This brings a beautiful close to another fantastic show by the boys from California.
best band ever.......2007-05-07
very good cd. st. jimmy is my far the best song on it and it has a good video.
This one converted me.......2007-04-13
I love lots of different rock music, but I had never been sold on Green Day. Something about their music, and especially the production of their sound on their studio albums, did not appeal to me. This DVD/Cd combo changed my mind and got me listening to some songs over and over again. It has a frenetic energy that I didn't find in their studio work. I don't much like the unnecessary cussing, but I can overlook it when the songs are this good. I find it amusing to see a punk band use so many pretty vocal harmonies. Songs I couldn't bear to listen to on the albums suddenly were quite good here in concert, such as 'Basket Case' and 'Brain Stew'. Most of the stuff from 'American Idiot' is great here also.
Energizing performance, great rock/punk music.......2007-03-14
For someone who grew up with rock music, was a child in the 60s, a teen and young adult in the 70s, and witnessed the early stages of punk, also in the 70s, this album/DVD came as something of a revelation. Although I've been more or less out of the loop in terms of both rock and punk for some years, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this disc--a "greatest hits" compilation leaning heavily on the "American Idiot" album--and watching the concert DVD. The songs belong to my daughter's generation, but geriatric as I am, I think the music is excellent, and the lyrics pretty intelligent, sometimes even searing. The DVD is fun to watch, too; the frenetic editing and choppy visuals don't really bother me.
I gather that some of the concert was cut from both disc and and film, but what is presented is very fine. The band, with two back up musicians, launch themselves into the American Idiot rock opera with a vengeance (complete with political commentary), and some older, vintage Green Day songs, like "Basket Case," and the mega-hit "Good Riddance," to the immense enthusiasm of the huge Brit crowd at the Milton Keynes National Bowl. Selections highlight the versatility of the group, which can belt out punk lyrics of anger and alienation, hard-hitting rock numbers, or melancholy ballads like "Wake Me Up When September Ends," without missing a beat. All three musicians seem powered up and at the top of their game, and Billie Joe Armstrong, an energizer bunny if there ever was one, keeps the energy level high from start to finish with his remarkable voice (a flexible tenor with an occasional, pleasing quaver) and onstage antics.
To add to all of this, the members of Green Day--baby faced, green eyed Billie Joe, the lean, intense Mike Dirnt, affable Tre Cool with his inimitable clowning--have an undeniable visual appeal than comes across well in the concert DVD, as it has in their videos (viewable on the Green Day website).
Truth.......2007-02-12
Green Day is the largest band in the world right now,
the only bad to make the punk rock opera that stormed
the world over. people critisize them because they are jealous.
They are better and more talented them "Mee-tall-ica" and
rap "hustlers" "iz u with ma" (makes no sense) and they're angry
cuz they're going strong 18 years now and they are capable of real music.
hats to those who had good feedback for this incredible album
Bad critics are jealous too.
But of course they'll deny it like
all cowards in this world.

Customer Reviews:
Welcome remastering!.......2007-07-27
George Harrison = God, in my book (even though I'm fully aware how much that goes against his religion and spirituality, heh heh), but I will try to write an unbiased review anyway.
His second real solo album, it lacks the epic scope and beauty of All Things Must Pass but is definitely one of his most solid records ever. I'm not really going to repeat what others have said, I just wanted to point out that if you had the old CD like me, this newly remastered version is well worth it. The sound is greatly improved, trust me! As for the DVD set, I actually found the accompanying booklet more satisfying. Whichever version you get (with or without DVD), it's worth the upgrade.
Living In The Material World.......2007-07-03
This is a good set to have if nothing more than to follow George's transition from the Beatle's breakup to Brainwashed. This CD makes me feel like I am listening to a late night FM Station and or just need some background music with the exception of the 2 bonus tracks which are outstanding. The DVD is good reference and is a nice addition to complete this set, but not essential.
Hari's the real deal kids - Pete Ham is sprinkled throughout........2007-06-26
I think my title says it all...
George's sprituality may not be everyone's idea of a good listen but the texture of the songs and overall vibe must be appreciated. Thank the gods that Phil Spector didn't muddy this record up!!!
Pete Ham is featured as an on-call guitarist during these sessions. Once again proving that Pete was his favorite Badfinger guy.
Videos, well anything on video (even cartoon drawings) are appreciated because of the subject matter. Not earth-shaking but enjoyable to see.
George Harrison's New Home.......2007-01-28
This album was Harrison's first chance to record an album on which the songs weren't mostly written during his last years with The Beatles. He uses the opportunity to reflect on his relationships with the other Beatles ("Sue Me, Sue You Blues") and to explore the intersection between his faith and the pop music audience he'd gained in The Beatles and with his previous album, All Things Must Pass. The beautiful song "Give Me Love" is his highest accomplishment in this regard, on this album or any other. "Give Me Love" includes all of Harrison's skills: his recently-honed slide guitar style, his country roots, and his lyrical tribute to love.

Mode at it's best!.......2007-05-03
I didn't like it very much at first viewing/listening. But that's only because I didn't know the "Playing the Angel" songs. I am mainly listening to the bonus CD (which is AMAZING). Dave is great and Gore is best as ever!
The DVD is kind of boring, but I'm sure the show was great in person. Just once, I wish Dave would leave his shirt on...PLEASE! We need to start a petition.
Excellent concert, not the best plaza ever recorded but good one !!.......2007-02-09
I would prefer this video concert tour be recorded in Mexico City, 'cause was one o' the best plazas in this tour, even more than Milan, but it's a good one...and what to say to Depeche Mode... It's Depeche Mode best than ever !!!
A tarnish on the very best.......2007-01-21
Went to see this concert in Chicago for my third Depeche Mode show in the last decade. The show was so good that we bought tickets for the second engagement which unfortunately didn't occur due to Mr. Gahan being ill. I used the money that I saved from this cancellation to purchase the deluxe edition of the show. First off, let me say that I am happy with the purchase. The quality of the audio is fantastic and allows me to relive the concert I enjoyed so much. As to the video, I find the stop action/swerving camera/in-out fades to distract greatly from the simple pleasure of watching this show. I like the "One Night in Paris" and "Devotional" videos much more because they show the show without the consistent attempt to add artistry to an already great show that doesn't need that distraction. I hope that they will come out with a more straightforward video for our enjoyment. Buy this DVD/CD set, listen and continue or learn to love DM.
Excelent! I love it since it begins until it finishes!!.......2007-01-12
This is an excelent production!
I guess I don't need to mention the fact that the music is fantastic, do i?
They are fabulous, the public is fabulous, and the place is fabulous! Sincerely, it does not have anything to criticize! If you consider yourself a fan, you HAVE to have it!

Since the original Broadway cast recording of Stephen Sondheim's Follies was a truncated affair that turned out to be both a disappointment and a disservice to a brilliant show with a brilliant cast, this 1985 concert performance from New York's Avery Fisher Hall set out to record the whole score, a set of pastiches of old songs and songwriters as performed by a cast of faded stars and the visions of their younger selves. The result was a star-studded roster backed by the New York Philharmonic led by Paul Gemignani, with principals Barbara Cook, Mandy Patinkin, Lee Remick, and George Hearn, supported by the likes of Carol Burnett, Liliane Montevecchi, and Liz Callaway. Even these stars can't quite match the original cast, and the results are somewhat uneven--from Cook's yearning "Losing My Mind" to Patinkin's you-love-it-or-you-hate-it schizophrenia in "Buddy's Blues." Other highlights include Elaine Stritch's wry "Broadway Baby," the two young couples' interplay in "You're Gonna Love Tomorrow/Love Will See Us Through," and the electrifying audience reactions to "Beautiful Girls" and "Who's That Woman?" (A documentary video was released, but unfortunately, it did not contain the complete show.) As a bonus, this two-CD set includes 45 minutes of instrumental music Sondheim composed for the 1974 French film Stavisky, including two melodies that had been cut from the original production of Follies. --David Horiuchi

A Sondheim spectacular - Follies in Concert.......2007-03-14
I have very definite views on this - in other words, my word rules, ignore the others. Random thoughts - pay no attention to those who disparage Mandy Patinkin singing "Buddy's Blues." This is an album of brilliant pastiche songs, right? Patinkin is giving us the old vaudville, split week in Jersey, performance. Of course he's over the top! Outstanding. However - sorry, I love Barbara Cook, and it's a lovely rendition of "Losing My Mind," but no one, I repeat no one, does it like Dorothy Collins from the original cast. Dorothy Collins, the Hit Parade lady? Come on! Well, OK, I don't know how she did it, what she pulled up from inside herself, but it tears your heart out. The song belongs to her. "Beautiful Girls" is ... well, if you're a woman (or not!) I dare you to listen to this and not get up and pretend you're strutting down an imaginary runway (particularly if your kids are in diapers and you haven't been out of the house for 82 weeks and my husband better start helping out or I'll GO MAD)... Sorry, got carried away there. I could go on and on (remember, it's been 82 weeks), but those are just three highlights ... oh, and the overture, oh, and "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs" and heartbreaking George Hearn and absolutely terrific Lee Remick and of course, Elaine Strich!! and you've got to get this so we'll enjoy it over and over together, vicariously, and I better stop now, it's almost spring, maybe I'll get out. A girl can hope.
GREAT PERFORMANCES!.......2006-11-21
A WONDERFUL RECORDING OF "FOLLIES" WITH A LOT OF BRILLIANT PERFORMANCES
BY THE STARS ON STAGE. A "MUST" FOR ANYONE WHO CARES FOR THIS GREAT MUSICAL.
A Good recording........2004-06-23
The original is my perferred version, even though it is very watered down. Here, all the songs are complete, but it comes out uneven somehow. The really great performers here are Carol Burnett and Barbra Cook. They really shine. The rest do mediocre performances. Out of the rest, Lee Remick, and Elaine Strich do a great job. Buy this you want the "complete" version and four stellar performances, but the original is the one to get performance wise.
FOLLIES - the best recording ...so far.......2004-02-04
If any one album makes a case for FOLLIES is is this set of FOLLIES IN CONCERT. It is not the definitive FOLLIES, but about as close as we're likely to get. The sound is very VERY good, especially for a live recording, but as such there is quite a bit of applause on this disc.
Producer Thomas Shephard originally taped the dress rehearsal so he would have quiet endings for all the numbers but when the audience nearly tore the roof off Avery Fisher Hall, he decided that eliminating applause would negate the event that led to the album. So, he comprmised and used applause after the "follies" numbers but not after plot songs. If you didn't know this you might wonder why "Beautiful Gilrs' gets such a huge hand and the next song "don't Look at me" seems to be met with stoney silence.
The cast is sensational. Perhaps not in the same league as the originals but a fine "revival" cast. Lee Remick and Barbara Cook are ideal as leading ladies Phyllis and Sally and its a joy to hear Cook's glorious voice in "Losing My Mind." Mandy Patinkin effectively uses his energy to put a new spin on "Buddy's Blues. " I know some object to his over-the-top style but it was effective on stage. Elaine Stritch has fun singing "Broadway Baby" and Carol Burnet makes the most of "I'm Still Here." Really, there isn't one bad track in the whole package.
Completists may quibble with the slight cuts here and there..the last bit of the Overture (including a segment of "Can That Boy Foxtrot") has been cut, as has "Bolero D'amour." The original montage ending of "Rain on the Roof/Ahh Paris/Broadway Baby" was dumped, and the spoken interludes in "Loveland" have been re-arranged. NONE of this will impair your enjoyment of this wonderful show.
As a bonus RCA has filled out the second CD with the soundtrack of Sondheim's score for STAVISKY. Many cut songs from FOLLIES were used in this film score, so its a natural tie-in.
The booklet has all the lyrics but no synopsis to place the songs within the context of the story. It is a minor flaw in an otherwise first rate package.
My Favorite Follies.......2003-12-24
This is, in my opinion, the best recording of Follies you can buy. The quality of the recording isn't the best for reasons of staging and the lack of wireless mics back then, but who cares? Take a look at the list of famous singers in this cast. A big plus of this recording is the complete overature that wasn't on original. Barbra Cook is absolutely wonderful. Her voice doesn't age! I like the fact that they raised the key of a few of Sally's songs for Barbra since Sally is supposed to be the soprano of the two female leads anyway. Babra sings every single song with feeling and vocal perfection. I feel that her rendition of Losing My Mind is the definitive version of that song. Her final, "you said you loved me," is gorgeous and really shows the pain that Sally is feeling in her dramatically perfect interpreation of the song.
Lee Remick is wonderful as Phyllis. She has the icy beauty that really makes her song, Story of Lucy and Jessie really make sense. Her version of Could I Leave You? Is great! She is just really great.
George Hearn is absolutely wonderful! He sings every song like a god and it's nice to hear him sing something other then Sweeney Todd, which he tended to scream a lot in. I adore his voice and think he is perfect for the character of Ben.
Mandy Patinkin is so annoying. He emphasizes things that aren't supposed to be emphasized and he's just ridiculous in all of his songs. His voice isn't the problem, it's his high voltage, uneccasary dramtization that turns me off.
The supporting cast is wonderful. One More Kiss sounds so much better when it's sung by Opera singers, and these two are amazing. I mean look at their names and you'll go, Oh my god! Elaine Strich's interpreatation of Broadway Baby is very different for she truly sees the true irony of the song and portrays it very well. Everyone else is wonderful also. This CD is a must buy!

Good collection of miscellaneous songs.......2007-01-11
I tend to like No Doubt's odd collections, like BEACON STREET and EVERYTHING IN TIME, because the songs that are left off the albums (or done on the side or, in the case of BEACON STREET, recorded while waiting for other things to happen) are less slick pop and closer to their first album. I was a big fan of theirs before they were famous, when I was in high school, and tend to prefer their more ska and power-pop songs.
"Cellophane Boy," "I Throw My Toys Around," "Big Distraction," and "Full Circle" are the primary attractions of this CD.

Everything In Time.......2005-10-07
First off, I would like to say that I love No Doubt (but though I love Gwen, and her music is good in its own way, I think that the solo career was a mistake). I think that they are the most talented band of all time, certainly the most talented band that I have ever heard. I just started to love No Doubt recently, and ordered all their CDs. Though this is a CD of B-Sides, I think that it is one of their best and that the songs should have all made it onto the records they were written for.
1. Big Distraction: 5/5. I love this song, I can't exactly explain why. The horn parts in it sort of sound like their early ska stuff, and I love the tune.
2. Leftovers: 4.5/5. Not my favorite on this CD, but it is good in its own way. It is a bit slow, and reminds me of a cross between something from Tragic Kingdom and Return of Saturn.
3. Under Construction: 5/5. I like the tune and guitar parts of this song. It reminds me of 'Six Feet Under' from Return of Saturn.
4. Beauty Contest: 5/5. A sad song, and has very deep lyrics. The phrase 'born to blossom, bloom to perish' is originally used in this song, but some of you may recognize it from Gwen's 'What You Waiting For?'. Wait until the last few seconds of the song, it's really cute!
5. Full Circle: 5/5. I love this song. The tune is really catchy, and the lyrics are good.
6. Cellophane Boy: 5/5. Another song that reminds me of a cross between something from Tragic Kingdom and Return of Saturn. Slow tune, not very catchy, but the lyrics are great.
7. Everything In Time (Los Angeles): 5/5. This song and Everything In Time (London) sound completely different, but they are both sad sounding and very beautiful lyrically.
8. You're So Foxy: 4/5. I like it, but it's just not one of my favorites. The verses are completely different from the chorus, and that's what sets it apart. On the inside cover of the CD, it said that this was a possible single, but if it was I don't think it would have even made it into the top 20. It doesn't sound like a song that you would hear on the radio.
9. Panic: 5/5. Love the lyrics, but the tune makes me all jittery. Another song where the verses sound completely different from the chorus.
10. New Friend: 5/5. This is one of my favorites from this CD. It's very reggae sounding, and the tune is so catchy! I think that this should have made it onto Rock Steady. Also, the song 'In My Head' from Rock Steady came from this song.
11. Everything In Time (London): 5/5. A very good song, great lyrics, but it makes me want to cry sometimes.
12. Sailin' On: 4/5. This was a cover song, it was originally by the Bad Brains. I like the way that they have adapted and made it theirs, their version is much slower than the original.
13. Oi To The World: 5/5. A really cool Christmas song. The lyrics are awesome, and though this wasn't their song originally, Gwen sounds truly great singing it.
14. I Throw My Toys Around: 5/5. This song was from the Rugrats movie, and features Elvis Costello. The tune is slow but catchy, and the lyrics are really cute.
15. New & Approved: 4/5. The remix is good, but goes on for too long. Personally, I liked the original better.
16 and 17. A Real Love Survives and A Rock Steady Vibe: 3/5. Catchy beat, but it isn't really by No Doubt. It mostly just has Miss Dynamite and Sweetie Irie rapping, and then occasionally has Gwen saying "A real love survives" in the background. Not my favorites.
Read this!.......2005-08-10
No Doubt is one of those bands that trys new things, but still acts like.....themselves! They don't try to be someone that everyone likes, they just act like who they really are, and if fans don't accept them, then....fans don't accept them....but, saying that I would also like to add, that not everybody has the same taste---and therefore, don't always like the same genre of music.. but all I wanted to point out, is that Gwen is a beautiful hearted girl, and she loves being an artist and preforming and all that stuff.........this CD is one of the best that I've listened to in a really...really long time!!!! If you don't consider buying this CD, you're crazy!
Fantastic!!!.......2005-01-06
If you like classic No Doubt (tragic Kingdom & Return of Saturn), this CD is for you! I LOVE it! It's B-sides from when No Doubt was still Ska-ish--before Gwen started experimenting with the hip hop/R&B. There are a few--maybe 3 songs I don't really like that are remixes, but the other 15 are great! BUY IT!

Rare Satie.......2004-09-29
Although Satie's orchestral output was dwarfed by the number of his works for piano, it's unfortunate that these compositions have not been recorded more. "Parade" stands out in its use of sound effects (gunshots, typewriter) in addition to conventional orchestra. Bravo to Naxos for allowing us the opportunity to hear these pieces.
A dream!.......2001-04-11
This record, a recommendation by Gramophone, is one of the best bargains, even from Naxos.
Parade is fun to listen as Gymnopédies in one of the best performances I have heard.
Th ballets are bizarre, and the music is so sugestive that you can "see" them.
Mr. Kaltenbach makes a correct reading and the Nancy orchestra rises to the top.
Bravo!

One of the Best Recordings of 19th Century Ballet Music Ever Produced.......2005-10-15
Finding recordings of old ballets from the 19th century is usually a feat within its self. Just about every ballet company today performs them, but the orchestra hardly ever records thier music. The old composers of the ballet before Tchaikovsky are, in my opinion, the most underrated creators of music ever. Alot of this has to do with the fact that they did not write music for showing off the orchestra or even the conductor, but for showing off the ballet dancer. The Ballet Master would set down strict instructions of time, tempo, and even scoring so that the music would fit like a glove to the dances and dramatic scenes. These composers are often dismissed for thier very 'un-symphonic' approach to composing. It is rare, that an orchestra sits down to record peices that were written soley for the ballet dancer. Delibes's or Tchaikovsky's music has more symphonic qualities, and the two are more famous. This results in thier music getting recorded more often (to often if you ask me).
Among these composers, the most famous is Leon Minkus. He was, before Tchaikovsky came along, the resident composer of ballet music for the Russian Czar's Imperial Ballet in St. Petersburg. With the great choreographer Marius Petipa (who would later create "La Bayadere", "The Sleeping Beauty", "Nutcracker", "Swan Lake" among others) they created a ballet very loosley based on the Cerevantes novel "Don Quixote". The ballet premiered in Moscow, Russia in 1869 for the Bolshoi Ballet. It was taken to St Petersburg in 1872 for a more lavish and formal staging and has been performed there ever since. The work was much revised and reworked throughout Petipa's lifetime and well afterward. Among these was the staging by the great dancer Alexander Gorsky in 1900. "Don Quixote" (or "Don Quijote" as its spelled on the packaging) has been tinkered with a great deal throughout the 20th century. It is these versions that have been passed down to us.
The music, true to 19th century tradition, was added to and revised by several composers, mostly at the behest of the ballerinas that danced its leads, and the fact that revisions of the work went on well after Minkus's death. Most of the additional music is recorded here (at least the important additions), and Spassov does a first rate job in his conducting. The music is played exactly as it would sound if you were in the theatre and had dancers right in front of you.
I was so excited when I saw this item a few years back for sale and quickly snatched it up. There is another recording done by the Victoria Orchestra of the Austrailian Ballet, with the Minkus score revised and refurbished by John Lanchbery, a version used for Nureyevs sumptuous staging (its only available on the orchestra Victoria site for purchase). Spassov's conducting is one of the best performances of ballet music ever put on disc. It should be owned by all dancers and balletomanes alike. Five Stars!
Great Conducting for Dancing.......2000-08-18
Spassov is a boon to ballet dancers. Excellent tempos and phrasing for the dancer. It's such a joy to have the full-length recording.
The full Quijote.......2000-02-11
I was pleased to find the full length recording of this ballet that is rarely seen in its entirety. I enjoyed the recording, however, I found the orchestra less than full-bodied, especially during the Grand Pas de Deux towards the end of the CD. It seemed a little tinny, a little too fragile during Kitri's variation, which does not suit her passionate, voluptuous nature. Aside from these drawbacks, I found the music very entertaining. I am still waiting for a full length version by a more robust orchestra, but in the meantime, this Don Quijote recording will do.
Delightful recording of neglected composer.......1999-09-04
This recording of DON QUIXOTE (the only relatively complete recording of the ballet) is a must for all lovers of ballet. While some of the orchesteral playing tends toward the insensitive oom-pah-pah side Leon Minkus's lilting score loses none of its charm or vivacity. This recording is also interesting in that it records much music which is rarely performed in American productions of the ballet. It is a delight to be able to hear the hauntingly beautiful vision scene whenever one wishes as the three variations (four if you count the recording of the original Dryad Queen's pas seul) are each masterpieces. The programme notes, unfortunately, are poorly translated and less complete than one would like. All in all I can not reccomend highly enough this fine recording of a neglected composer's work. One can only hope that other 19th century Russian ballets will be recorded. The reputations of Ceasare Pugni, Leon Minkus, and Riccardo Drigo as hack composers are completely undeserved.
It is an excellent full length version of Minkus 'Ballet........1999-05-11
Usually, people who feel a strong predispotition for ballet music, have hard times in order to find on the commercial CD classical music, works by ballet music composers of the end of the last century. Minkus work has been negleted, but in the present version it is possible to listen to sensitive music which was predecesor of Tchaikovsky 's great ballet. I bougth this full length version at London city on 1995 and I know that in my country, Argentine, is quite hard to find Cappriccio CD version. I hope that Cappricio is keeping on with full length Ballet's version, hoping to listen a full length Version of L'Corsario as the production of Kirov Ballet and the Full length version of the Ballet La Source by Minkus-Delibes.

Uh..........2006-12-27
Well, this is one interesting album. If you love the film, or the music, or anything at all: STAY AWAY! Well, actually let me say, this is probably the only nice thing you'll hear me say about this album: THE JITTERBUG is amazing. I have actually been in productions of OZ that emulated this arrangement to great effect. Other than that, this album is horrible. Jewel yodels OVER THE RAINBOW. Jackson Brown...ugh...I myself have played the role of the Scarecrow...and he just degraded a role which I love so much. Roger Daltry...stick to THE WHO. Nathan Lane, actually not bad. Joel Grey, good Wizard, but liked him in the role better in WICKED. I would only suggest this album for one reason: THE JITTERBUG.
A Showcase of Contemporary Talent.......2006-05-22
If you haven't seen this concert benefiting the Children's Defense Fund originally broadcast on TNT and available on VHS, you will definitely want to after listening to this soundtrack. Jewel is enchanting as Dorothy, taking 'Over the Rainbow' and making it her own. Roger Daltrey as the Scarecrow brings his rock edge in a rousing rendition of 'If I Only Had a Brain'. Nathan Lane is hysterical as the Lion, paying homage to Bert Lahr with 'If I Were King of the Forest'. Natalie Cole as Glinda puts a gospel spin on 'Open'. The one weak part of the cast is Jackson Browne, but the overall production is wonderful for the eye and ear.
Could have been better.......2003-07-17
I think the major stars on this, Jewel, Debra Winger, Natalie Cole and Jackson Brown, are fabulous. I was really disapointed in the Harlem Boys Choir. They do hit some great notes, but then the great notes are followed by some really flat ones. I've heard them in other recordings and thought they were great, but they are not at their top on this CD. But if you are a 'Wizard of Oz' fan, the rest of the CD makes up for them.
YOU MUST BUY THIS CD IF U ARE AN OZ FAN.......2003-06-28
Our local Drama group is performing the "Wizard of Oz (RSC)" for our summer production and as Musical Director I thought I'd get as many different versions of each song as possible. Most of the RSC songs do not appear in the film version so i thought i'd add this cd to my collection. All the songs have been modernised without loseing their still traditional feel. The cd is worth buying alone for Roger Daltreys' (The Who) version of "If I Only had a Heart". All star cast inc Natalie cole (miss you like crazy and pink cadillac) and Nathan Lane ( voice of "snowbell" in Stuart Little) and a load more older names that your parents will recognise more.
a must buy
I LOVE THIS CD!.......2003-06-22
I got this CD as a present from my mom for getting good grade's on my report card, so she ordered it for me. After waiting 5 day's, I finally got the CD. When I listened to it, I knew what to expect b/c I have The Wizard of Oz in Concert on video. I LOVED THIS CD!! Jewel's acting, and 2 renditions of "Over the Rainbow" and "The Jitterbug" will blow you away! She was pefect as Dorothy. Jackson Browne as the Scarecrow, Natalie Cole as Glinda the Good Witch, Debra Winger as the Wicked Witch, and Roger Daltrey as the Tin Man were excellent too. And Nathan Lane was HILARIOUS as the Cowardly Lion This CD is a must buy for Oz fans and Jewel fans! :)

Product Description
This CD contains an entire performance of the musical hit, GUYS ON ICE, as performed in Door County, Wisconsin in the fall of 1999. At that time, the show was a one-act. (It was expanded into two acts in 2000.) The recording features the late playwright Fred Alley as Lloyd, Doug Mancheski as Marvin, and James Valcq playing the piano and appearing as Ernie the Moocher. Alley and Valcq created the musical of THE SPITFIRE GRILL.
Customer Reviews:
Fun, offbeat show.......2007-01-14
An ice fishing musical? A show about two guys in a hut on the ice? The best Wisconsin musical ever? Surprise, both the show and songs are pretty good.
Sure it's a little cornball with terse men (in the Lake Wobegon tradition) and lots of ice fishing jokes, but it's also clever, fresh, with fun, listenable songs, many of which have a depth and sweetness as unexpected parallels are drawn between ice fishing and life. The CD is not just the songs, it's (most of) the show. It was recorded during a performance so you hear the audience laughing at the jokes making it more fun. Recommended.
Minor quibble -- the CD description and liner notes claim it is the whole show, but I recently saw the show at a local theater in its New England premier and the beginning of the second act (circa 2007) is missing from the CD.
