Made me a big fan.......2007-03-22

Before I bought this boxset, I had listened only to "Trust" and "The great distroyer". They where already a great band for me. But after, they became classic.
This fine collection of songs and videos are a demonstration of artists facing different stages of music production: demos, b-sides, collaborations, covers, live. And they are so good at them! Watching the videos, I was shocked with Sparhawk's onstage attitude.
This box will get you into low. Highly recommended.

Approximately the best box set ever.......2005-08-10

The band Low is a treasure and this box set is a gift. The videos of their "greatest hits" on the fourth disk alone make this collection worth buying. Low's other disks including the Great Destroyer are all terrific, but I suggest that this box set is a place to start if you haven't heard them.

What does Low sound like? A couple of the covers they chose seem revealing: The Beatles' Long Long Long and Pink Floyd's Fearless. Quiet and powerful. They are a band of great vocals and harmony, exceptional and sympathetic instrumentation, and they seem to control time.

Even though there are many great songs in the box set, my favorite song here has to be Low's cover of the Journey song Open Arms. I can't help it and I can't explain the appeal of the song and why I gladly anticipate the part where the singer's voice cracks. I listened to the song ten times in a row when I first got the set and numerous repeat listenings to it over the past six months. To put this in perspective, I watch American Idol and I don't care for anything I hear on the show, but I listen to Low's skewed version Open Arms and find it to be completely appealing.

Something else odd: I find the video for the song Words to be extremely comforting to watch. In black and white, the band sits in a boat on a frozen lake. It captures Duluth perfectly.

One other thing I note about Low is that they are the greatest punk band since the Velvet Underground. To play so slowly and quietly and in harmony against the background of a noisy world is the most radical form of music available. Completely defiant, engaging, religious, scary.

Great Box Set Filled With Low Rarities and Surprises .......2004-08-16

This superb 4-Disc box set of rarities, live tracks and demos will prove to be a delight for all Low fans. This is definitely NOT an elaborate best-of sampler of the world's greatest slow-core/sad-core band as virtually none of the offerings on hand were culled from their previously released CDs. All of the tracks are relatively obscure and were either never before released or were available on strictly limited edition small label singles. Disc 4 is a DVD that includes a surplus of live music videos (as part of the "Closer Than That" film) as well as several documentaries.

This set has been out since July 20th but Amazon has still not updated the correct tracklisting. For the record, then, A LIFETIME OF TEMPORARY RELIEF: 10 YEARS OF B-SIDES AND RARITIES consists of the following:

A quality band.......2004-08-06

It's funny how Amazon's page for this box set only lists 10 tracks in the track listing. In fact, there are over 50 songs spread out over 3 CDs, and there is a double-sided DVD which features 3 documentary films and all of Low's music videos to date. You also get a nice booklet with liner notes for all of the songs and lots and lots of pictures..

I really enjoyed the music videos. Before I picked up this box set, I had only ever seen the videos for "Words" and "Shame," so getting to see the others was a treat. I thought the video for "Canada" was very clever - I thought that letting Alan and Mimi's daughter hold one of the red balloons from the "Shame" video was a nice touch.

The documentaries are great, especially "Closer Than That." I've always been of the opinion that Low is a great band, but after seeing these documentaries I am more certain of that opinion than ever. Even though Low tends to attract only modest-sized audiences when they tour, I'm impressed by the care and dedication that they put into their music.

Sometimes people will say that "Low isn't for everybody" but I think that's a shame because while Low may sound different from most other bands, they are really do make great music that deserves a much wider audience. Anyone who likes to hear music by musicians who really care about their music should listen to Low.

This has to be Mancini at his best.......2004-03-01

This CD contains contains Mancini's Beaver Valley Suite. In this Suite, he "writes" of his childhood in a steel town. Anyone who grew up in a mill town will immediately identify with the images created by the music. This has to be Mancini at his best. There are six more original pieces (tracks 6 through 11) that showcase Henry Mancini's unique ability of giving joy to others while doing something that he truly enjoys. I have all of these pieces on the LP, Debut. I have been looking for them on CD for years. I am listening to the CD as I write this review. As the sleeve says, it "presents a quality of sound superior to the original vinyl album."

Unholy mess.......2007-07-29

This is a Marvin Gaye album?! Taken from unreleased demos made shortly before his death and released posthumously a year after it, this album is surely one of the worst albums ever made by a truly legendary artist. His ballads are the weakest of any album in his career, others like "Sanctified Lady" are too robotic to be good for somebody like him, and "Masochistic Beauty" is such an unforgivable atrocity that sometimes I can't help but wonder if it was what Marvin and his father were arguing about when he was killed.

Music critics often dismiss this album as being uneven, unpolished and unfocused as the songs were pulled from the can and some of the material sound more like demos than polished tracks. I think, though that they're so hung up on mechanics that they're missing the point...
I especially dig this release and give this album four stars, because I believe that this album, unploished though it may be, gives you rare candid insight into the mind and heart of Marvin Gaye -- the man. Some of the tracks were songs meant to be released for his next album, while others were songs that remained in the can....but they all seem to show a deeper and perhaps somewhat tortured side of Marvin that you didn't see in earlier releases (not even Here, My Dear).
You hear the spiritual side, (Life's Opera, Dream of a Lifetime), the scandalous, yet humourous side (Masochistic Beauty, Savage in the Sack, Santified Lady), and the tortured, emotional side(those would be his Motown tracks, It's Madness and Symphony). My only complaint about this release is that the producers censored some of the content and took away from the genuineness of the material (e.g. Savage in the Sack was originally meant to be called "Them Niggers are Savages in the Sack" and Sanctified Lady was to be "Santified Pussy" clearly both were overdubbed for political correctness.).
Be it as it may, this album should have been a greater classic than allowed...because it showcased the man...the true genius and mind of Marvin Gaye

Love This Album.......2006-01-24

No, it's not What's Going On, Let's Get It On or I Want You but still one of his best. I bought the album in 1985 and was glad it was released on CD. I bought the CD also. Certainly better than Hear My Dear which I think is his worse offering.

Not a fitting epitaph, but decent songs nonetheless.......2005-07-22

Critically, this album has been bashed, thrashed and rehashed over the years.Considering it was made out of the unreleased, remaining scraps of his last recording sessions, I think it is a decent posthumous affair, better than say John Lennon's "Milk and Honey". I would go as far as to say that "Sanctified Lady" is one of his best jams, done in the funky style of "Sexual Healing" or "Got To Give It Up". Also of note, "Ain't It Funny(How Things Turn Around), which is a catchy tune that I play a lot and could have been written about his recent commercial comeback with the Midnight Love album. I also like "Savage In The Sack" and "Masochistic Beauty". I think, obviously, if Marvin had lived, these sessions would be more polished and stronger material along the lines of "Sanctified Lady" would have come along and lifted this album to the level of Midnight Love, but I feel it is pure musical snobbery to turn up your nose at these recordings, as many have for years, when actually they are quite good, and let's face it, Marvin's s#*t was other people's diamonds.

This is Marvin's worst release to date.......2005-01-22

People would say that this is not the right album that Marvin 'cuz it's too phony or corny or whatever. I would say it's good just even tho there at least 5 songs I'm feelin which were fantasic. The other ones are okay on my handout right here. This goes to show why Motown and Columbia put it out here 'cuz he never wanted them to released. The fact that Marvin was being a lil hard on himself before he originally passed. The best song to date (which is off the compilation album "The Soulful Sound of Marvin Gaye") is "My Madness" which deals with depression and loneliness. It's full of desire, loss, depression, anger, and other varieities as well. First "Sanctified Lady" (probably known as "Santcifed P***y) was doing good on the R&B Charts in '85 just right after he died and it eventually failed on the Top 100 b/c of a lack of support. Nobody wanted to believe in that record it wasn't Marvin put out. I believe it's good tho. Can't say I hate it. But it goes to tell you if u read the book from David Ritz which he wrote out about Marvin. Think that'll help u.

Anyway I would love to give it 3.5 stars (C+) even tho it's not a classic to date y'know.

True Sweethearts.......2000-10-16

This CD offers some of Jeanette Macdonald and Nelson Eddy's most beloved songs from their movies. Their natural chemistry is apparent in songs like "Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life" and their individual talents are shown in the solos that they sing. These two legendary performers draw the audience into their songs and each is a special memory of the movie that it came from. Macdonald and Eddy were made to sing together. It is surprising that they were not sweethearts off screen after hearing their voices and seeing their movies. Their passion and tenderness towards each other is something out of a fairy tale. This CD has all the fun, romance, and innocence that was epitomized in their movies. It is a true treasure and a favorite in my music library.
