LEGENDARY ICON OF SONG~BRAVO JERRY! .......2004-03-22
If Jerry Butler only had one hit and it was "For Your Precious Love", he would be a Soul Legend!! But this master had classic's like "Moon River", "He Will Break Your Heart", "Let It Be Me" (a truly brilliant duet with the late and great Betty Everett),and countless other classic hits such as the ones in this tasty sampler! Talk about overlooked classic's, I would most definitely put Jerry Butler at the head of that list and when anyone who love's great singing gets into this collection they will feel the same way!! Grammy and Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame let's get it together!!!!! This is a master and this collection of classic's such as "Only The Strong Survive", "Moody Woman", "I Dig You Baby", the mesmerizing "Mr. Dream Merchant", the soulful "Lost", and the masterful "Hey, Western Union Man", all make Jerry Butler one of the greatest ever!! Get this and for sure you will seek out other great works from this Legend!! Look at all of the "out of stocks" on this great singer and act fast!!!! Album Description
Jerry Butler started his career in The Impressions with Curtis Mayfield, before going on to a very successful solo career, although still collaborating with Mayfield as writer and producer. Gamble and Huff produced Butler's two biggest selling albums Ice On Ice and You & Me in 1969. Edsel. 2005.

Two superb but underexposed albums from "The Iceman"........2006-03-17
Perhaps because they were both released at a time when disco ruled the charts these two albums' sales figures were dismal--the material on both, however, was nothing short of glorious and superb. Jerry Butler's reunion with Gamble and Huff resulted in some great Philly Soul with gorgeous numbers like "Let's Make Love", "Angel Face", "Would You Mind?", "Don't Be An Island" and both the disco and slow-tempo versions of "Nothing Says I Love You Like I Love You" being key cuts.

Why Do They Do This?.......2007-03-10
There's a reason it is only $5.98. They're rerecorded. Even Amazon disguises that they are rerecordings. The CD says so in white type in the lower left corner, but the Amazon repro of the label doesn't show it. Hmmmm... Don't waste time with this one, get the originals.

Customer Reviews:
Probably the best single CD collection.......2005-05-05
Because Butler has changed labels several times over his 4 decade long career, it's pretty well impossible to get EVERYTHING on 1 disc due to licensing issues. This one does about as good a job as I've seen though:
All his most well-known crossover hits are here: "Moon River" (the definitive version of the tune...sorry Mr. Williams), "He Will Break Your Heart","Make it Easy on Yourself", his duet with Betty Everett for a great cover of the Everly Brothers "Let it Be Me", and soul classic "For Your Precious Love" (with the Impressions). Late 60s comeback pop hits "Hey, Western Union Man" and "Only the Strong Survive" are a bit murkier in many oldies fans memories, but they're nonetheless great songs that deserve to be remembered.
Outside of those, you get several tunes that did well on R&B charts if more unknown to pop fans: Top 10 hits "Find Another Girl","I'm a Telling You", and "Never Give You Up". The only omission from the 50s/60s era is top 10 hit "Are You Happy?" from 1967. (His latter-day 70s stuff isn't here either...probably because of licensing..but you can get that on the Millennium collection, ASIN B00004ZDVY)
Add to that the usual fantastic Rhino job of remastering and liner notes and you have as close to the definitive Jerry Butler single CD compilation as exists for the time being.
Very good choice of songs.......2002-07-27
Excellent collection of the Ice man on VeeJay records. It only overlaps on 2 songs with his Mercury Very Best compilation.
Only 4 stars because of the sound quality, it could be very much better.
Smooth as silk but some material is marginal.......2001-03-14
Being too young to know the complete library of Jerry Butler tunes I can only comment on what has been included on this disc. Suffice it to say that 90% of the tunes are outstanding but there are notable exceptions. That and only that is what brings the rating down to 4 stars.
Jerry's performances are flawless. His voice is fluid, soulful, and evocative. But even Henry Aaron couldn't hit a home run every time he came to the plate. If a few of the cuts (primarily) at the end of this compilation had been left off I would have rated this as a five star disc.
And I would invite more traditional music (non R&B) fans to take a listen. For the material within is appealing to both fans of soul and the more traditional.
I find myself coming back to this collection very often and singing along with these reflective songs of simplicity, beauty and longing that seems to have only existed in my memory.
The Iceman cometh (so, originality is WAY overrated)!.......2000-12-12
Jerry Butler was one of the smoothest, most soulful crooner to ever get onto vinyl. This compilation is the one place to find much of his best work, and is a great value.
Henry Mancini said on the liner notes to another great J.B. album The Spice of Life (which for God knows why has not made it yet to to compact discs) that Jerry Butler recorded the very first version of "Moon River". Appropriately, it is included here. It also has a representative of Butler's early work as a member of the Impressions, with that doo-wop classic, "Your Precious Love"
All of the hits from J.B.'s career are found on this one disc. "Make It Easy On Yourself", "He Will Break Your Heart", "Western Union Man", "Only the Strong Survive" and the great duet with Betty Everett, "Let It Be Me".
J.B. is a classic old school crooner. His voice is miles deep and smooth as slightly oiled silk. This album is the place to find his best work.
Tears of Joy from Captain Midnight.......2000-12-07
when I heard this CD I feel upon my knees looked to heaven and wept tears of joy. This is truly the music of the Gods don't miss this CD.

Oh, yes! Jerry's Best Vocals!.......2006-01-31
Jerry's vocal on "The Best Love I Ever Had" (uptempo version) smoulders slowly and then bursts into flame. This song is so great that there are 2 versions. Another gorgeous ballad "Angel Face" is so smooth and sexy. It's heavenly! The knock-out number that is worth waiting for is the slow version of "The Best Love I Ever Had" which is the finale. Look out! This one is infectious!
Definitely NOT Jerry Butler at his best.......2005-10-03
Sorry Bradley Briggs, that's definitely not Jerry Butler at his best! It seems by 1980 Jerry Butler lost the sparkle and funk of his 1976 "Love's on the Menu" album and the fabulous groove on his joint album with Thelma Houston. Once you experienced these, it's hard to settle for anything less. I am confident in his huge catalogue there are some more pearls like these.I wish I knew them all and they were not out of print...
LEGENDARY SINGER AT HIS BEST~BRAVO JERRY!!!!.......2004-09-28
Anyone who wants to hear the greatest male "soul" singer of all time (or just plain great singer!) at his absolute peak with awesome orchestrations filled with the best group of musicians on the planet had better grab this set while its around!!! Opening with the great title song "The Best Love", it is clear that Jerry Butler is in ultimate vocal form and flows brilliantly through a great arrangement with a vocal that is all over the map but ever so smoothly!!! A Jerry Butler original features a gorgeous vocal filled with passionate longing and a glorious orchestration swirling with strings and beautiful background vocals making "Would You Mind" a masterpiece that is followed by a beautiful duet with Debra Henry "Don't Be An Island". Totally amazing that the masterful "Tell Me Girl(Why It Has To End)" wasn't a huge hit as Jerry's magnificent vocal pleads and soars to incredible heights and depths and becomes one of the finest performance's of his brilliant career-this one is completely stunning!!! A cooking remake of "Reach Out For Me" is winning while "We've Got This Feeling Again" is another great duet with Debra Henry that flows with a great rhythm track and sounds like it should have been a hit!!! A haunting vocal with an engrossing arrangement make the Gamble/Huff original "Angel Face" another standout in a superb set that is full of great songs with the bulk of them produced by the legendary Philly team Gamble/Huff along with Dexter Wansel and Jerry Butler!! This is an example of the classic Philly Soul production team at its peak with grand and incredibly creative arrangements and a singer who is simply brilliant...Closing this peerless collection is a slowed down seductive version of the title song "The Best Love" and Jerry's passionate vocal is sublime and beyond compare...BRAVO JERRY BUTLER!!!
